After rescuing Markus and Brian from the clutches of the sadistic Councilwoman, Shanna Crystal, the Mad Dogs are forced on R & R. None of them are happy and none of them want or need 'rest & relaxation' but they have no choice. The campground, Dad T's, is a gay soldier's wet dream for R & R but the Dogs barely have a chance to enjoy all it offers when everything they know about the supernaturals that inhabit the world is turned upside-down. A leisurely run in the Ocala National Forest turns their R & R into a mission. A mission that almost takes out the Delta Unit. Permanently.

WHAT THE...... ok book 3 showed some potential. The first portion of 4 did as well. But then towards the end it was like a massive “hey what can I throw in the supernatural and drama bowl” fiesta. I mean it got so random and over the top it made my head hurt and I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on. .... I just .... I can’t.

Jumping the shark

It screams an author has run out of ideas when they resort to ‘jumping the shark’. Supernaturals each group never knew existed despite being the same, but slightly different? In hundreds of years? Preposterous. The other thing that happens that has never been possible before? Of course this is a ‘special’ case. That’s just dumb.

5 star review by Dan

Whoa. Things just went to the next level!

The Mad Dogs have been ordered to take R&R at a place called Dad T’s Campground, just outside the Ocala National Forest in Florida. They are thinking “What the Hell?” Not only are they being forced to take R&R, but told specifically where to go for it! After driving for hours from North Carolina, they get to the road to the place, but it is a pothole filled old road that tests the limits even of their SUV. Then they come to a gate with a keypad. Only problem “Cordick” never told them the code and the robotic woman’s voice doesn’t give any other options. Finally after Oh has a meltdown, a man comes on laughing on the intercom and opens the gate for them.

They find themselves in a place I wish existed when I was gay and in the military! A gay military guy’s dream campground. Nice log cabins, a beach wave pool, restaurants, bars, and lots of super-hot men running around, some completely naked.

The guys get up to some “group activities” with a young Marine, who once again proves that the old saying we used to use when I was in the Navy is still true…”All Marines ARE bottoms.” ;-)

But are they really on R&R? Something seems to shout Ops at them. They keep up their daily training to see what will happen. Along with the training they also have a little fun in other ways. For example, we have a capture the flag game, where you can “kill” your enemy with paint balls, or “capture” your enemy and use them for sex. Sounds kind of fun, doesn’t it!

Then the story takes some twists. The Mad Dogs find out they aren’t the only shifters out there! When Doc and one of the two shifters they met in the woods are captured by the evil Shanna (yes the bitch is back) and her minions, the Mad Dogs find out just how unenlightened about the real supernatural world they are. Along the way we have warlocks, a fallen Angel, a new vampire, and a host of unnatural monsters spewing through this gateway to somewhere else!

I loved this new broadening of the series. Now I have to wait for the next one to come out. Hopefully Ms. Cothern you are hard at work on it already!

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

This is definitely the best book of the series so far!

To catch up and prepare I re-read the first three books before sitting back to enjoy this one. If you are new to the series start at book 1, you need to start at the beginning.

As a recap the Mad Dogs are an elite Delta force who are wolf shifters. To become a Mad Dog is a scary and risky business as Brian discovered in the first book. They are the best of the best when it comes to dealing with the worlds paranormal problems, they are also a highly sexual group with the wolves needing either sex or blood to keep them sated which makes for a great group dynamic!

When they return from their rescue mission after Brian and Markus were kidnapped and tortured by a member of the council the Dogs are told to take some time out and enjoy their R & R. For most people a trip to Florida would be a gift but the Dogs aren’t happy about it and would much rather head off the find Shanna, the rogue council woman, and end her time on earth. By the time they arrive at their Florida destination, Dad T’s their alpha has smoke coming out of his ears and the pack are stressed. The eye candy at the all gay resort goes some way to melting their stress!

The Dogs seem to be the kind of group that can’t go anywhere without trouble following them and after only a couple of days their world as they know it turns upside down. The least of their problems is that Shanna’s latest kidnap attempt is partially successful before they are introduced to things they didn’t know existed and for an elite group of warrior werewolves that deal with the paranormal world that says a lot!

Brenda has also merged her characters from the Shadows series to come and help out as Doc and another wolf need rescuing. There are huge changes afoot for Markus and Brian and lots of unanswered questions at the end as well as a jobless watcher. This is an exciting read in a great series and my only hope is that book 5 isn’t too far away as I need answers!

I have been a fan of this series since I read the very first one a while ago, and I have to say that with each new book, Cothern blows me away with it! If you haven’t started reading this series yet, trust me, your missing out on a great paranormal read!

This book was interesting to me because I loved how even though the Mad Dogs are on forced R&R, of course things aren’t always what they seem. Of course there is always the action, sexy times, and the sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what was going to happen next, that I have come to expect with Cothern’s books.

One thing that I really liked about this book was that Cothern brought some characters from one of the other series they have written. There was enough information given that it peaked my interest and left me wanting to read more of their stories, yet I didn’t feel lost at all because I hadn’t read them.

All I have to say is that I hope this series doesn’t come to an end anytime for soon! I can’t get enough of Cothern’s writing and these characters are just great.

Ok, within the last two days I read the Mad Dogs 2, 3 and 4 and I have to admit that this last one was a let down. It was riddled with mistakes and even when I wanted to let it slide because I really wanted to know what happens between Markus and Brian, will Duke play a bigger role with the Mad Dogs and how do the Dogs spend R & R? I was pleasantly surprised to come across some characters I read in another book about, but the big showdown was weird, overkill, totally over the top and left me... You guessed it with A BIG CLIFFHANGER. I so hate them. Now I have to go and see if I can find the next book in this series...Not giving up on it yet.

R&R #4

My god this book was so good. The team is finding out all kinds of information they did not know. B is a wolf and vampire mix now. They are dealing with all kinds of issues now. They also might have met some new friends also. Only time will tell. I can not wait for the next book. Erin

The thing that I loved the most about this book was the crossover between Mad Dogs and her group from her Shadow series. I thought that was so cool. She has done that before but I still love when it happens. Also love that she give a nod to Sandrine Gasq Dion and her assassin/shifter series (which I love). I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Great book but be warned, cliffhanger ending

Wow, what a great addition to the Mad Dogs series. Of course, I now have to read the Shadows books too. Bad, cruel author for leaving us hanging until book 5.

Je suis complètement Addict à cette série de Brenda, elle est originale, des personnages qui déchirent ( mon dieu je parle comme une gamine!), alors ce n'est pas de la romance traditionnelle, mais vu le contexte c'est exactement ce qu'il fallait.

R&R

Just keeps getting better and better. Book 4 has some great action, new characters, and such heart wrenching that you don't want it to end.
