Ava Devlin writes sweet and steamy Regency romances. She lives in New York City and believes that diving into fantasies of 19th century England provides an excellent reprieve from hectic metropolitan life.

Ava has been writing love stories for as long as she can remember, and spent her teen years swooning over classic romance novels. In her 20s, she moved to Britain and spent a year exploring the sights, experiences, and history that have made the Regency era such an enduring time of fascination and romance. Afterward, she spent several months living the life of a governess as an au pair in the French Alps, which only heightened the romance of her time abroad.

Today, she splits her time between her writing, her day job, and an excessive amount of dog cuddles. She loves nothing more than hearing from her readers, so feel free to drop her a line at ava@avadevlin.com.

Such a great book, and a promising new historical romance series 💗 This book is perfect for fans of Erica Ridley’s Wild Wynchesters series.
A romance without an unnecessary third act breakup or miscommunication automatically gets bonus points from me, but my favourite thing about this one has to be the FMC and how well represented her neurodivergence was.
The main couple going from not wanting to marry the other, to them realizing they had a lifelong crush for each other and kissing in hallways was a bit quick, but it somehow still felt pretty natural.
I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Dragonblade Publishing for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Both taken in as children by an eccentric baroness, the mc’s are reunited years later after the baroness is declared legally dead. They must marry in order to inherit both the land and the house they grew up in.

I loved the writing style, and am looking forward to reading more by the author. I also loved that the fmc is neurodivergent and the mmc teaches her the secret language (body language) that she doesn’t understand.

Tropes: Arranged Marriage, Enemies to Lovers, Neurodivergent MC, Historical Romance, Forced Proximity, Found Family
Bringing Balance
Fluently Speaking Baron by Ava Devlin kicks off her new series, The Starling Legacy. I have read one other book by this author, To Harm and To Heal from her Ladies Revenge Club series, and I was so tickled to see that she included a small nod to the books in that series😊.
Widowed Baroness Willa Selwyn came from humble beginnings but forged a place in the aristocracy through tenacity, courage and an open heart. Indeed, more than an open heart, she also opened her home to a group of seven talented wards/foundlings, each with an unusual and entertaining gift. The eighth member of her coterie is Elias Selwyn, her nephew by marriage. Unfortunately, Elias felt as if he did not fit in with other children and soon found a way to separate himself from this awkward environment. But not before he had an absolutely abysmal clash with Harriet French. Harriet was the first orphan “adopted”; she is a wizard with languages but is often unable to read social cues or body language. Harriet and Elias were often at odds due to her impulsive method of communication (she says whatever is on her mind) and her inability to determine the nuances of facial expression and common social interactions; she considers this to be a “secret language”.
Years pass and the eight “wards are called together when it appears that Willa is deceased. They are there to learn Willa’s final wishes. Imagine their surprise when they discover that she has found a way for Elias and Harriet to wed! Will the misunderstandings of the past make their union untenable, or will they find a way to communicate their secret feelings and fondest wishes?

Conclusion:
I thoroughly enjoyed Fluently Speaking Baron! While the story mainly centered around Elias and Harriet, Ms. Delvin uses exquisite prose, enriched by humor and engaging characters, to whet our appetites for the upcoming stories. I spent some time as I read trying to determine how the characters would pair up. In addition, our main characters were so sweetly rendered as they staggered towards love. Brilliant and looking at the world differently, Harriet made an intriguingly unique character. Elias, not flashy or obviously “gifted”, was insecure about his worth or his place amongst his aunt’s wards. The forced proximity and arranged marriage (favorite tropes) allowed Elias and Harriet to connect at their own pace. Final words, I enjoy historical romance and I always appreciate the diversity of this author’s characters. Libba’s (Liberty) story is next, and I am low-key surprised to see that she is paired with Jasper Townsend, her brother’s best friend!

Favorite Lines:
“Harriet. I mean Harriet. It means head of household. But I’m not. I’m not one.”
“Elias,” she repeated slowly, flashes of a taciturn, pudgy boy with rosy cheeks and a frowning demeanor in the corners of Starling’s Rest flickering into her mind.
Errol, like Hattie herself, had started life as part of the staff at Starling’s Rest.
Elias Selwyn briefly considered turning the coach around and going directly back to Hounslow.
She stood, her red gown crinkling around her, still the type of beautiful that gloated over the fact in every move she made.
She was still brassy inside and out, a perfect little pedant with impeccable posture and strange affectations, and he still felt like an idiot in her presence.
And somehow, none of that had changed a single thing about Starling’s Rest.
He looked very different, Harriet thought. It wasn’t only that he was grown now, or slender, or handsome. It was something else.
To find somewhere else to be, because it was unbearable being so damned ordinary around all these bright, young stars.
…..he would still belong to this odd little constellation. And he would still be its dimmest star.
“Dignified?” she suggested. “Rigid,” he decided, tittering again. “I don’t mind it.”
“‘The master suite’?” they both echoed, at varied paces and octaves of horror, giving Mr. Harcourt pause as he reached for his folio.
“Someone broke the bollocks off a Biblical statue at my parish picnic and then got caught with the vicar’s hand up her skirt. I should have been there!”
She frowned at him. “You are very good at reading body language, aren’t you?”
She’d gotten close to Elias once, and he’d shoved her into the sea for the trouble, after all.
He had also been much away as their wedding and the funeral drew closer.
“Good afternoon,” she said, kneeling down to peer at the pig. “A rival?” “Yes,” he said. “I’m terribly sorry. I’m in love.”
“Welcome to the family, at long last.”
And the world was smiling.
Everyone just silenced themselves because Liberty Lennox had decided they ought to, and they all turned to him, expectantly.
“The charmer,” she said, “and the strapping one. You know this, don’t you? Ruby is the vixen. Monica the angel. Libba the Valkyrie.” “And you?” he asked. “Me?”

Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This is the start of a new series, and establishes the relationship of a group of very eclectic individuals who form a found family, as wards of a rather progressive minded woman, the Baroness of Selwyn. A wealthy widow, Willa Selwyn, nee Starling, became the mentor of the heir of the barony, her nephew by marriage. She also decided to use her wealth and influence to bring under her roof, a group of foundlings who all demonstrate unusual traits and abilities, and to develop and foster their talents. This story takes place years in the future, when the foundlings and heir, Elias Selwyn, are brought back to Starling's Rest, after years of finding their own paths. The baroness has been missing for 7 years, and the time has come to declare her death official and dispense with her will.

While this story sets out to establish the various characters involved, and their relationships, the central focus is on Harriet French, and Elias Selwyn. As the Baroness Selwyn's first discovery, Harriet, or Hattie, is an orphan that was working in the the Starling kitchens when her talent for languages was discovered. Rather than becoming friends, Elias developed resentment of Hattie and the other foundlings, feeling awkward, and out of place, especially not having any obvious outstanding talents compared to them. This eventually lead to him leaving Starling's Rest. Now forced back for the reading of the will, and to fulfill it, he and Hattie are forced to face the past, and some surprising elements of the Willa's will and legacy force them to forge a relationship for the future. But while Elias and Hattie are initially at odds with the expectation of the will, and their past, they find themselves renewing , and rediscovering their relationship, after so many years apart and perhaps a future together is not as onerous a prospect as either initially thought.

A lovely read with some really interesting quirky, eclectic, characters and relationships. Some definite family drama and conflicts, between blood family and found family, but with humour and lightness. I really enjoyed the little Easter egg involving a tidbit from Don't Give a Fig (Ladies Revenge Club). I am also intrigued by the mystery/intrigue of the missing Baroness, and the little tidbits about her throughout the story and hope that mystery will be revealed through the series.

This is the first of a big new series, so it’s crowded, but they’re a witty, quirky, colourful bunch and I really enjoyed their chaos.
The outset is 8 wards reuniting for the reading of the will of Willa Starling – the eccentric baroness who took them in and nurtured their talents – and finding out their inheritance comes with letters and strings attached. The most important one: they all have to stay in Brighton for the next year.

Hattie & Elias were the first to arrive 15 years ago. She a scullery maid with a knack for languages. He the late baron’s heir and rather unremarkable – something that made him feel worse with every new arrival. And while the 7 starlings remained, flourished and spread their wings, he fled to Eton and made his own life.
Now, the neurodivergent polyglot and the stern military man are to be wed according to Willa’s will... that is, if they want to reunite land and funds.

A woman who can read everything but people, and a man who’d hoped never to see his childhood crush again. Is it awkward? Yes, and it’s also funny, endearing and their chemistry rocks! It was so heartwarming to see Elias loosen up and find his nook in the nest, and Hattie is simply wired differently and adorably straightforward – in everything! I loved that they didn’t fight Willa’s wish, yet it’s not a marriage of convenience either. They’re uniquely them; they fit... with a bit of jiggling.
Add a full house, the organising of a funerary carnival, piglets, bats, bicker & banter, teasing, mischief and the warm but messy dynamics of a true found family – and you get an delightfully fascinating, lighthearted whirlwind. It sucked me in at the beginning, and didn’t drop me till the very end! And in case you’re wondering: there’s no third-act break-up.
There are a few open ends though, and a bit of mystery... but I’m guessing all will be revealed in due course – and I’m all in!

This was a madcap, eclectic group of people with one thing in common above all else! Without the care and intervention in their lives they would be far worse off! Baroness Willa Selywyn after 7 years has been declared deceased and all her wards, the Baron and her Barrister must gather for the reading of the will! The gathering of them all summoned back to where it all begin! Starlings Rest is home for all of them at one point and time. We have Malcolm, Libby, Ruby, Errol, Monica and Rhys! Of course Elias Selwyn is also included! Of course any large gathering brings chaos and hopefully closure but per the contents of the will they must all dwell together for 1 year! It is a love story of sorts more as a reconnection between Harriet and Elias. They are adults now and have a clearer understanding of their childhood! Hattie with her gift and ear for languages must learn a new one! If she ever hopes to understand Elias and the future they can carve together… she must become fluent in Baron. Sooner than later as per the will they must wed! I have highlighted laugh out loud moments. I stayed up too late! But it was difficult to put down! Readers will get in and hold on for one heck of a ride! Bravo! Loved it I received an ARC copy for my unbiased review!

This is the story of Harriet French and Elias Selwyn. As seven years have passed since she was last seen alive, the missing dowager Baroness Selwyn has now been legally declared dead. Her nephew Elias, the Baron, together with her seven adopted prodigies, are summoned to Starling’s Rest in Brighton for the reading of her will……

What a great start to a new series! The chaos of all the new characters who are drawn together but not always willingly, was well written with some great banter and plenty of room for more shenanigans as they all get their own stories in subsequent books in the series. Hattie was an interesting character with her unusual view of the world through the colours and shapes of words, and I felt for Elias with his feelings of being the odd one out despite his own achievements.

I loved the reference to the statue losing his ‘bits’ in Don’t Give a Fig from the Ladies Revenge Club, and this has the makings of being just as good a series. Thank you so much for the chance to read an ARC copy, and I’m looking forward to reading the next instalment as the story continues 🐈‍⬛

It begins with the reading of the will of the eccentric baroness Willa Starling who brought seven of them together years before. They find out that their inheritance comes conditions attached. Chiefly that they all have to stay in Brighton for the next year.
Hattie a former scullery maid is brilliant with languages. Going back to when they met fifteen years before Elias the late baron's heir was rather awkward and lacking confidence. And while seven children remained and flourished and spread their wings Elias fled to Eton and made his way forward until he is constrained through the will to marry to secure the land and funds.
Hattie and Elias have chemistry and history to navigate in this fun romp.
Elias undergoes a big change warming to the others and becoming part of tge group whilst Hattie remains singular and straight to the point.
and a man who'd hoped never to see his childhood crush again. Is it awkward? It is entertaining and humorous, and keeps your attention till the satisfying HEA. Don’t miss it!

What an absolutely diverse and delightful group of people created for this story! This first one is about Hattie-a polyglot (language specialist) who hears and sees words. It was fascinating watching her explain what she sees, tastes, smells and feels as those around her speak. More fascinating is what she could NOT understand in the way of “silent body language”. I felt for poor Elias- a “normal” person caught in the middle of all these progenies. No wonder he had to get away. What I didn’t like was the f-bomb that landed in the middle of the story. There was absolutely NO REASON for it and it degraded the story to 4 stars for me. The mystery of what happened to the Dowager Swelyn is an interesting twist and I cant wait so see what the author does with that. Really good story!

I received this story for free and these are my own views.

Excellent start to a new series!

I became a fan of Devlin’s books from reading her Lady’s Revenge Club series so I was excited about a new series from her! This book did not disappoint! Devlin has a way of creating unique characters and an interesting universe for them to inhabit. I loved the whole set up for this book and the books ahead. There are a lot of characters to unpack…I really appreciated the breakdown of each character in the afterward and referenced it frequently at the start…but once I got into the story I knew everyone well enough. I have a soft spot for a neurodivergent MC so I fell hard for Hattie, our MFC. It took me a bit to like Ellias, our MMC…mainly because he seemed determined to give Hattie a hard time. But I trusted Devlin’s storytelling and I ended up falling in love with the man!!!! I can’t wait for the next book!

What a cast of characters! Certainly one eccentric family full of quirky characters. They are all wards of the Dowager Baroness, Willa but only one is related to Willa and that is her nephew, Elias, the new baron. There are eight in total but also a few friends. They each have a special talent that they excel at. This story focuses on Harriet, who specialises in languages and Elias, the baron. I enjoyed their story, they were quite different characters but they fitted so well together. I loved their teasing and banter. I look forward to reading more about the other characters. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own. However, I did preorder my own copy.

As the first book in a new series, this one is outstanding! The characters are full and rich. Each is unique, but somehow they all work together. Their story as wards together is poignant. Elias, as the heir, never felt like he fit with all of his aunt's chosen children. He struggles to understand how to intermingled with them after his aunt is presumed dead. It is so sweet to see his longing for connection come through. Then you have Harriet, the first ward, who is totally amazing! I adored her character so much. I am now looking forward to the rest of try this series as I've fallen in love with all eight of them!

Rounded up to 5.

Fluently Speaking Baron is the first in Ava Devlin's Starling Legacy series, and it’s a delight: a polyglot heroine who experiences words in colour, taste and scent, a baron with feelings he cannot name, and a found family that generates enough chaos to power a small village.

When the eccentric Baroness Selwyn is declared dead after seven years missing, her wards and her nephew Elias are summoned back to Starling's Rest for the reading of the will. What follows involves an inheritance with lots of strings attached, including a marriage neither Harriet nor Elias want.

Neurodivergent rep, beautiful wordplay and a sweet love story set this series up beautifully.

I really struggled to get through this story as a lot of the utterances by the heroine make no sense and I also didn’t feel like I was reading a romance. Initially none of the characters seem likeable, though they do improve as the story moves on. In addition there were typos, errors and American words being used by English characters. I was disappointed as I loved the synopsis of this book, I doubt whether I will read any more of the series

Fluently Speaking Baron is a delightful start to a new series, introducing a diverse found family brought together by the progressive Baroness of Selwyn. With quirky, gifted characters and a central romance between Harriet “Hattie” French, a brilliant polyglot, and Elias Selwyn, the reluctant heir, the story blends family drama, humor, and heartfelt connection. The mystery of the missing Baroness adds intrigue, while the warmth of the relationships makes this an engaging and memorable read. Quirky, heartfelt, and intriguin.

I like the premise of this story quite a bit. I enjoyed the idea of this kind of unique aunt collecting orphans that she saw promise in outside of where they were currently at. I liked the idea that all of them and her nephew felt a bit envious of each other. I liked that our FMC appeared to be a bit neurodivergent. The two leads do seem into each other, which isn't always the case. I also liked that the list of characters is at the end of the book.

I just didn't connect a ton with the writing and it felt a bit like an ensemble cast.

I found the book intense and chaotic.

It takes place in a special setting. The story follows Hattie and Elias, and many other characters. Sometimes, I thought there were too many characters, and the story was spread out among everyone. However, I found all the characters are striking and intriguing.
I kept smiling throughout my reading.
I feel the story is a happy, very pleasant read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is definitely going to be a very interesting series of historical romances. The characters are fascinating. Our hero this time is a Baron who is being told of his inheritance. Our heroine is an orphan with an incredible talent. That talent changed her life.
There are lots of giggles and unusual happenings. I fell in love with all the characters. I will definitely look out for the rest of the books that follow.
I loved it.

This first book in The Starling Legacy series was a unique and enjoyable enemies to lovers forced marriage historical romance. The story was a refreshing and very interesting found family that is made up of very fascinating characters by an eccentric woman. The intrigue and mystery drew me in. I really enjoyed the characters' relationship growth and how delightful everything works out. I'm excited about book two. I highly recommend reading!

A motley group of wards assemble for their benefactress' last will with each one having something to accomplish. Lots of antics and witty exchanges, mayhem and fun and the surfacing of past grievances with the new understanding of the circumstances with adult eyes. Meanwhile, love inevitably happened with the first ward, a polyglot. Enjoyed this book with varied characters, each special in their own way.

I received an ARC of this book and leaving my review voluntarily.

7 Starling Wards & A Baron

The Dowage Baroness Selwyn vanished without a trace. Seven years later, she was declared dead. Hattie would inherit the manor house and the Baron would inherit the land it sat on. The only solution was a marriage. The book was filled with childhood memories, rivalry, hurts and love that only would survive if they stayed together. Great characters, funny stories and a marriage of convenience turned into a forever love!

An interesting start to a series. Seven people, who were taken in by the Baroness, who is declared dead after seven years missing, are now in charge of her estate and funds. The interaction between the Baroness's family, Eric Selwyn and Hattie, who inherited, instead of him. They are interesting characters.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade and leaving a review by my own choice.
