The Protectors #1

The Hazard and the Hitman

Rate this book
Desperate times call for desperate measures, and being in the hospital with stitches in my head and no way out makes me pretty desperate. So I log in to a dating app, searching for a guy willing to pretend to be my boyfriend so I can bust out of this overpriced nightmare.
But what do I get?
Accused of being a prostitute. Talk about a waste of phone minutes.
With plan A a no-go, I move on to plan B. Escape. Except, on my way to freedom, I’m nearly pummeled by a man wearing all black and with the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen.
When he pretends to be my boyfriend, I’m shook. And even more shook when I discover this is the rude guy from the app.
Turns out he’s not only rude but bossy, irritable, and he keeps calling me a walking hazard. I go along with the lie anyway, thinking I can ditch him as soon as I’m free.
Except that doesn’t happen.
I end up back at his place, eating soup and trying hard not to catch feelings.
Then my apartment is broken into, and I’m running for my life, confused, injured, and with nowhere else to go. Kieran vows to keep me safe, something he seems more than capable of… Which is kinda odd for a real estate agent, right?
As the threat to my life intensifies, I start to wonder if I’ll make it to my next birthday and, more importantly, if trusting Kieran is the deadliest hazard of all.

Safety info, content warnings and tropes down below.

This book really was a whole heaping of fun, and actually made me laugh out loud a couple times. I can also confirm that there’s the usual brand of Cambria possessiveness and protectiveness that I love so much. It’s OTT, nostalgic, and just feels comforting in a way. There’s something about a cold, grumpy hitman immediately losing his cool when meeting the love interest that warms the soul. Kieran being a completely overprotective mother hen being head over heels with a walking banana peel (the nickname Hazard is very apt) leads to a lot of fun and cute moments.

I always love when romance books have an external plot, and if it’s action-y, even better. Although it took a while for the plot to kick in, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The action was fun and exciting, but never angsty. It’s an easy read, lots of fun, and perfect if you love complete obsession and possessiveness between main characters. Haz is also just adorable.

While the sex scenes were hot at times, I don’t love the words fapping, rod or manhood, lol. I also don’t love whatever the hell is going on here:

I sucked deep and, as I drew back, brought out my teeth. The blunt edges of bone grazed over the sensitive, silky flesh, shaving off a thin layer and catching on the underside of his fat head.

Some dodgy sex scenes aside, I really enjoyed this book. 4.5 stars rounded up.

Thank you to the author for the ARC :)

“I don’t belong here,” I said quietly, already shaken up, so the words just tumbled out. “In this fancy house.” I sniffed and gestured in his direction. “With a man like you.” His head cocked to the side. “And what do you think a man like me is?” “Bad-tempered, bossy, anal.” I glanced around. “Obviously rich.” “Is that all?” His tone was dry, and I itched to look at his face to see what expression he wore, but I denied myself. Looking at him led to bad things. “Handsome,” I mumbled. “What?” “Hard of hearing,” I hollered.

“Can we finish this conversation in the morning, baby doll? I need some sleep.” “Yes,” I replied, carding my fingers through his dark hair. He moaned in satisfaction and went boneless on top of me. Did I mention he’s like twice the size of me? “Don’t you want to roll over?” I asked, squished beneath him. “No,” he declared, then started to snore. It shouldn’t have been easy to sleep while being smothered by a massive lawnmower.

“I made you eggs. Go,” he said, releasing me and stepping back. “I don’t have time.” “You are not leaving this house until you eat breakfast.” He might as well have just declared a law because the look on his face was unforgiving. “Get your keys!” I said, racing toward the kitchen. “I’ll be done in less than five.” “If you choke, I’ll spank you.” I coughed around the scrambled eggs already stuffed in my mouth. “Chew,” he demanded, disappearing back into the hall to presumably find his keys.

My heart constricted painfully when he looked up again. “I’m sorry.” It was a night of firsts for me, it seemed, because the indulgent, coddling sound that came out of me was one I’d never heard before. Maybe I was sick. I should check myself for a fever. “You didn’t do anything wrong, baby doll.” I cradled his face between my palms. The urge to kiss the end of his nose had me swaying forward, but I caught myself before I could. What possessed me to do such a thing, I didn’t understand. Must be the fever.

“Why do you look like someone kicked your puppy?” It wasn’t a question but more of a command. I scowled. “If I had a puppy and someone hurt it, I wouldn’t pout. I’d knock out their teeth.”

“But I need you to also understand that I love you, and you said you love me back.” “I do.” He confirmed. “That means I get to help take care of you now, and I can’t do that if you’re running around all willy nilly and getting into elevators by yourself—” “Willy nilly.” He snickered. “Pay attention,” I barked. “I’m giving you a lecture.” “Right.” He agreed, not contrite at all.

100% yes.

Haz was absolutely the cutest anxious little bean. I loved everything about him. His whit and sass. His love for fish and plants.

Kieran omg. I absolutely love when an MC gets mad at inanimate objects that like hurt their partner. Kieran was the sweetest most delusion hitman ever.

Their instalove connection was everything. And that hookup app hospital meet cute. Are you kidding me?!

Ghost - Kieran’s bestie - had me laughing. Him and Haz would banter the house down and rile Kieran up. It was such a fun time. I neeeeeed me some Ghost and Rett though please 🥺

I will say some of the word choices at times were a little weird during their spicy moments but it didn’t pull me completely out of the story. I just prefer not to read the word “rod” in reference to 🍆 🫣😅

Anyway this was such a delightful read and I loved every second of it.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I dove into this book, but to absolutely love every second of it wasn't it. This book really has a little bit of everything; humor, action, growly possessive MMC, super hot spice. Haz and Keiran were magnetic. You just couldn't help but fall head over heels for Haz. He's an adorable walking disaster. Keiran, man I want a Keiran in my life! He's the perfect amount of growly, protective, grump!

I did not expect to love this book as much as I do and it's easily a top read of the year for me so far. Being a first book for me by Cambria I'm eager for more!

What happens when a stone cold hitman meets his person ? Well he turns into a softie who will do whatever it takes to keep what's his happy. Keiran and Haz are just *chefs kiss* and their love story is filled with a possessive caretaker alpha hitman, a clumsy anxious twink, attempted assassinations, shootouts , size difference, touch him and die , kink for firsts, cute ugly fish babies , neglected house plants , and secondary characters whose story I can't wait to read !

Mine. The word rumbled inside me like a volcano, actively denying his statement.

“Go on, little hazard. Don’t argue.” “Don’t call me that,” he hissed. But that was exactly what he was. A hazard. To himself. To my better judgment. But as hazardous as he was, I wasn’t ready to let him go yet.

“Haz as in hazard?” “Haz as in Hazier,” I corrected. “My little hazard.”

“The picture of innocence, incorruptible, and delicately beautiful, just as dolls are.” A new blush made his face flame, and I enjoyed my front- row seat to its bloom. “Dolls can also be nightmares. Haven’t you ever seen Chucky?”

I shook my head. I didn’t want him to. I wanted all of him. The entire storm that was Kieran Vaughn. Even if he ripped me apart and scattered the pieces, I would know sweet demolition.

“You aren’t leaving. This is where you belong.” “W- what?” I asked. “I’m keeping you.”

“You’re mine now, Hazard. Not just for tonight. For always.”

Ghost wasn’t my friend. He was like toilet paper that stuck to the bottom of your shoe. Clingy and annoying. But his skill set might come in handy later.

Trying to explain anxiety and irrational thought to someone who didn’t experience it was like trying to paint a house with a Q- tip.

Never in my life had I ever wanted anyone the way I did Kieran. If he didn’t touch me, take me, own me, then I would simply cease to exist.

“That’s all of me inside you. You’re mine. Mine to protect. To mate, love, and to own.”

“You have me now too, little hazard,” he vowed, a hard edge glinting in his eyes. “And I will do whatever it takes to keep you safe.”

“I’m a hitman.” “Yeah, and he’s a twink with mismatched eyes, anxiety, and more innocence than he has any business having. But that ain’t all he is.

“Do I look like I’m kidding?” he mused. “I hate to break it to you, but on a scale of one to ten, your sense of humor is a negative five.” He scowled, so I leaned forward to peck a kiss to his lips. “That’s okay. I’m funny enough for the both of us.”

“You are essential, baby doll. The one and only thing I will never live without. Wherever I go, you go too.”

“It doesn’t matter where you came from or who wants you. The size of the target on your back will never be bigger than what I feel for you. This is where you belong. With me. You’re mine.

“You might be a hitman, but you are so much more than death, Kieran Vaughn.”

This is the first in a new series, and this is Kieran and Hazier’s story.
Kieran is a broody, possessive, and closed off hitman, while Haz is a walking disaster, who is clumsy and sweet, and he grew up in the foster system. When Haz ends up with stitches in his head, and is desperate to escape, he goes to a dating app looking for a fake boyfriend to spring him out of hospital. After the app idea did not go to plan, he tries to escape on his own, and crosses path with Kieran, the rude dude from the app.
This is a well written action-packed story, with suspense, intrigue, opposites attract, hidden identity, touch him and die vibes, challenges, humour, witty banter, revelations, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, mafia romance.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Oh wow! I needed to read this! This was such a good read! I enjoyed Haz and Kieran so much. Haz is so much fun - chaotic in the best way with the sweetest heart and hints of being a little? Maybe? Speculation 🤣!

Kieran is very very type A. I loved it. But he bends for Haz unhesitatingly - claims him immediately. Such fated mates vibes here

Cambria Herbert writes in such an engaging way, I read this in one shot no breaks. The humour is on point and there is a ton of heat and the story moves at a perfect pace

Read this if you’re in the mood for light, low angst, high swoon love story with a highly possesive hitman and his bratty sweet baby doll who he loves to indulge

I am so curious about Ghost and Rhett. I hope that books coming 🥰

I thought that this book was a very rare gem. Haz and Keiran are simply irresistible characters. So very different but so meant to be that they caused the sweetest ache to take up residence in my heart. Their story is super funny, undeniably cute, a bit extra, spicy, swoony, dramatic, emotional, intense, suspenseful, heartfelt, action-packed and intriguing. I loved every single word as I fell completely and totally head over heels. This new series definitely has me addicted and I cannot wait for the next book.

Thrilling, swoon-worthy ride, full of danger and heart

From the moment Haz finds himself stuck in a hospital with stitches in his head and desperation in his veins, the story takes off at full speed.
Haz's attempt to hire a fake boyfriend through a dating app? Hilarious chaos. Being accused of being a prostitute instead? Peak disaster. And just when you think it can’t get better, he nearly collides with a tall, dark, blue-eyed menace in black who, of all people, pretends to be his boyfriend.

Enter Kieran. Broody? Absolutely. Bossy? Without question. Irritable and calling Haz a “walking hazard”? Constantly. But beneath the sharp edges and gruff exterior is a man who falls first—and falls hard. And watching it happen is pure magic.
The banter is sharp, funny, and electric. Their chemistry crackles from the hospital corridors to Kieran's kitchen table, where forced proximity turns into stolen glances and simmering tension. The size difference? Delicious. The “touch him and die” energy? Immaculate.
And the way Kieran steps in when Haz's apartment is broken into and the danger becomes real? Heart-racing and swoon-inducing all at once.

What makes this story shine is how seamlessly it balances humor, suspense, and emotion. Haz’s clumsy, anxious energy paired with Kieran’s controlled intensity creates a dynamic that feels fresh and wildly entertaining. The hidden identity element adds layers of intrigue, and as the threats escalate, so do the stakes; both for their lives and their hearts.
The mafia undercurrent and hitman twist bring grit and tension, but it’s the vulnerability between them that steals the show. Watching Kieran go from reluctant fake boyfriend to fiercely protective partner is chef’s kiss perfection.

If you love: Broody, possessive heroes, forced proximity, hitman falls first, suspense with heart, a hero who stumbles into danger but stands his ground, then this book is an absolute must-read.
Thrilling, funny, romantic, and dangerously addictive, The Hazard and the Hitman proves that sometimes the biggest hazard of all is falling in love. 💙

The Hazard and the Hitman is book one in the new Protectors series and follows innocent Hazier, Hazard, and Kieran, the Hitman, as they fall for each other while facing multiple challenges.

Hazier, also known as Haz to his acquaintances, grew up in the foster care system. His mother left him at the hospital just after he was born. She thought she was protecting him, but it is not an easy way to grow up. He has never really had any friends, just acquaintances. He does not have time to have friends since he works four jobs in order to pay his bills.

Kieran has a colorful past. He spent time in the military on a special team. When a mission went south, he left the military. Now he finds himself working as a hitman. He is methodical and stringent. He preps for each job. No surprises.

But boy is Kieran in for the surprise of his life.

When Kieran receives a message on the dating app he prefers, he goes to view the person sending it. He decides to engage in conversation, until it takes an unlikely turn. Then the other person just stops messaging. Now his curiosity is piqued.

Haz has had quite the night. He just finished his job of delivering food and is on his way home. But it is pouring like a monsoon. He is being cautious, but it does not prevent the events to come.

After a comedy of errors, including a absent without leave patient, Haz and Kieran finally meet face to face. Kieran is a big guy and Haz is a very small guy. But when they meet, all bets are off on who will win the battle of the escape artist.

Haz is a walking accident waiting to happen. Kieran has nicknamed him Hazard because of it. He is a hazard to himself and to anyone around him. But Haz is also a fighter, and he is wily. So when things turn daring, he goes with his instinct to evade what is coming at him.

When Kieran finds out what happened and by who, he is livid. So much so, we see his associate, Ghost, enter the picture. But what is yet to come has nothing on the fireworks we watch on the Fourth of July.

But when the truth comes out, will Haz and Kieran survive the fallout? Will Ghost be the one to take the hit for them? And will a blast from the past land in someone's lap unexpectedly?

When I started this story, I kept thinking how is this story going to work out. But man did I enjoy the ride I was taken on. This book was hard to put down. I needed to know what was going to happen next. I needed to know the background history that we get throughout this story.

Haz is such an innocent. I loved listening to him. He is a character beyond any I have ever enjoyed before. He trips over everything. At first I wondered how he could be so innocent. Given how he spent his childhood it is so hard to believe. But he really is. And it really shows with his love for plants and the plecos at the fish store.

Kieran may be a hitman, but someone has finally found his soft spot. I had to laugh so hard when Ghost entered the picture. The banter between Kieran, Haz and Ghost is comical. And Ghost really knows how to goad Kieran.

Now I need to know more about Pip. I need details. And how do he and Ghost know each other?

Hazard and Kieran is pure serotonin in book form—sweet, chaotic, wildly steamy, and impossible not to devour in one sitting.

Haz (Hazard) is the kind of character who feels instantly familiar. He’s awkward in a way that’s endearing rather than exaggerated, constantly stumbling—sometimes literally—into trouble. It’s honestly a miracle he’s survived this long without bubble wrap. But beneath the clumsiness is a heart so open and genuine that you can’t help rooting for him. There’s something deeply relatable about the way he loves: all in, no hesitation, no armor.

And then there’s Kieran.

Grumpy. Guarded. Carrying that ex-military hardness like a shield he doesn’t know how to set down. He walks into the story with a permanent scowl and a chip on his shoulder, only to have his entire world upended by one chaotic, sunshine-filled disaster of a man. Watching Kieran try—and fail—to resist Haz is half the fun. The confusion, the possessiveness, the slow unraveling of his tough exterior? Absolutely delicious.

This romance leans unapologetically into instant attraction, and it works. Their connection ignites fast and burns hot. If you’re a fan of the “touch him and see what happens” energy or the dramatic “I would scorch the earth for you” devotion, you’re going to eat this up. Kieran’s fiercely protective streak paired with Haz’s accidental magnet-for-danger tendencies creates the perfect storm of tension and tenderness.

What really makes the story shine, though, is the humor. The banter snaps. The situations spiral. The emotional beats land without ever losing that playful undercurrent. Every interaction feels animated and vivid, making even the most over-the-top moments feel grounded in their chemistry.

It’s also worth saying: the spice level does not disappoint. The passion is intense, but it never overshadows the emotional core. Their dynamic balances heat with heart in a way that keeps the story feeling fun rather than heavy.

Longtime readers of Cambria Hebert will recognize her signature blend of sass, swoon, and sincerity here. Expanding this couple from a shorter story into a full-length novel was absolutely the right move. There’s room to breathe, to laugh, to fall a little in love alongside them.

And now? I’m officially campaigning for more. Ghost and Rett deserve their moment, because this world is too entertaining to leave behind.

If you’re looking for a romance that’s fast-paced, laugh-out-loud funny, fiercely protective, and delightfully messy—in the best way—Haz and Kieran deliver from beginning to end.

A fun & entertaining read

OH. MY. GOD. I cannot tell you how much I loved this book. THE HAZARD AND THE HITMAN had the perfect balance of humour and action, two unforgettable MMCs, and plenty of emotion. It was fast-paced, addictive reading which I didn't want to put down.

Hazier "Haz" Maddox is innocently sweet, suffers from anxiety, has a big heart, and is the clumsiest person ever... this man is a risk to himself. Kieran Vaughn is ex-military, disciplined, obsessive about hygiene and cleanliness, moody, possessive, and he just happens to be a hitman. Two opposites, yet they balanced each other perfectly.

What begins as a plea for help through the Heart2Heart dating app, followed by a hospital meet-cute, turns into a life neither men expected. Haz and Kieran are instantly attracted to each other, an immediate connection and some wonderful instalust have them beginning a tentative friendship. Their banter was hilarious, the amount of times I was crying so much from laughing! Haz's clumsiness often lead him to hurting himself, so I loved the way Kieran was there to offer some form of protection and some TLC. It was Kieran's obsessive possessiveness which really had me sighing and giggling, the way he was always constantly watching over his man. I adored that they struggled to keep their hands of each other, the spice they produced was delicious.

Haz and Kiernan are the definition of grumpy/sunshine, Haz always seeing the good in life while Kieran sees the opposite. From the moment they met Kieran's protective and possesive side was on full display, and they intensified when Haz's life was threatened. I enjoyed watching Kieran become a man whose llife was so wrapped up in death become a man who focused more on life. He literally became a big softie whenever Haz was around, don't get me wrong the grumpiness was still there.

THE HAZARD AND THE HITMAN was a fun and entertaining read. It had everything I love when I read a Cambria Hebert book, and when it came to the spice she didn't hold back. There was a twist in it that did stun me, but in another way I sort of saw it coming. The side characters Ghost and Rett were terrific, especially Ghost, that man loves stirring up trouble. I hope these two get to tell their story, the glimpse of them when they met was intriguing. I'm so glad Cambria took this short from an anthology and turned it into a full length novel. A definite must read.

The Hazard and the Hitman – Cambria Hebert

ARC Review

I received an ARC copy of The Hazard and the Hitman, and I absolutely loved this book. It’s fast-paced, intense, emotional, and packed with the kind of tension that keeps you glued to the page.

From the moment Hazard (Haz) and Kieran—the Hitman— collide, the chemistry between them is undeniable. Their dynamic is full of sharp banter, danger, reluctant trust, and moments where vulnerability slips through the cracks of their carefully built defenses.

One of my favorite moments came from Kieran and really captured the deeper emotional core of the story:

“Those who cling to life defy death." Those whispered words hit me profoundly, shifting something inside me I had yet to understand. – Kieran

That line perfectly reflects the emotional undercurrent running beneath all the action and danger. Kieran may be a lethal hitman, but there’s far more going on beneath the surface, and watching those layers slowly reveal themselves was one of my favorite parts of the book.

Haz, on the other hand, brings humor and chaos in the best possible ways. His personality balances the darker tone of the story, and his internal commentary had me laughing more than once. One of my favorite Haz moments:

“You're a way better fish daddy than you are a plant daddy.” – Haz

And then there are the little everyday moments that make the characters feel incredibly real:

Have you ever worn jeans without underwear? If you have, you probably regretted it. Because, ow. These seams were rubbing places no seams should be permitted. – Haz

The balance between danger, humor, and emotional growth makes this story incredibly engaging. The tension between Hazard and Kieran builds naturally as they’re forced into each other’s orbit, and their connection grows in ways neither of them expects.

By the end of the book I was completely invested in this world and these characters. And now I am desperately hoping Rett and Ghost get their own story next, because I will absolutely be first in line to read it.

If you love high-stakes romance filled with action, banter, emotional depth, and characters who challenge each other at every turn, The Hazard and the Hitman is a must-read.

When I first started The Hazard and the Hitman, I expected a fun MM romance with a bit of action. What I didn’t expect was to completely fall in love with these characters and end up staying awake far too late because I couldn’t stop reading “just one more chapter.”

This story turned out to be such a perfect mix of humor, danger, chaos, and heart.

Hazier “Haz” Maddox might genuinely be one of the most lovable disasters I’ve ever met in a book. He’s clumsy, anxious, and somehow constantly managing to injure himself in the most ridiculous ways. But underneath all that chaos is a huge heart and an openness that makes him impossible not to root for. Haz has this warmth and sincerity that draws people in—even people who are absolutely determined to keep everyone at a distance.

Which brings us to Kieran.

Grumpy, controlled, and used to a life surrounded by danger, Kieran is the complete opposite of Haz. An ex-military hitman who thrives on order and discipline, he’s not exactly the kind of man who welcomes chaos into his life. Unfortunately for him, Haz seems to be chaos personified.

Their first meeting is honestly hilarious. A hospital escape attempt, a fake boyfriend situation, and the realization that the rude guy from the dating app is actually the man helping you escape? Absolute chaos in the best possible way. From that moment on, watching these two collide was endlessly entertaining.

Haz’s sunshine personality and accidental magnet-for-trouble tendencies clash perfectly with Kieran’s grumpy, hyper-protective nature. The banter between them had me laughing out loud more than once, but beneath the humor there’s also real tension building between them. As the danger surrounding Haz grows and the mystery behind it begins to unfold, their connection deepens in ways neither of them expected.

The chemistry between them is undeniable, and the spice definitely delivers. What I loved most, though, was seeing the way Kieran slowly changes. A man whose life has always revolved around death finding something—someone—worth protecting was such a satisfying journey to watch.

Cambria Hebert once again delivers her signature blend of humor, emotion, swoony moments, and unforgettable characters. If you enjoy romances with humor, action, strong chemistry, and characters who perfectly balance each other out, The Hazard and the Hitman is definitely one to add to your list.

I’m definitely not ready to say goodbye to this world yet, so I cannot wait to dive into Ghost and Rett’s story next.

Happy reading!

Fun and chaotic, opposites attract romance!

"I’ve walked through death, drowned in betrayal, and been swallowed by shadows all in the name of revenge. And looking at you right now, I realize that’s nothing compared to what I will do for love.”

The Hazard and the Hitman is such a wild ride! It's got all the things I love about Cambria Hebert books. A possessive MC, the humor, the fourth wall breaks and some suspense to wrap it all up!

"Know without a doubt exactly where you belong. With whom you belong. It doesn’t matter if I’ve known you for two hours or a lifetime,” he said, still hammering into my body, driving every word home. “This will not change.”

Haz is a chaotic, whirlwind of a man who's been dealt a really rough hand. Kieran is a hitman who's jaded by life. These two are opposites in every way, but from the second they set eyes on each other, there's an instant connection that changes their lives forever.

“You’re mine.” He reminded me as if I might have forgotten the eleventy- million other times he’d said it.

Haz is a precious ray of sunshine who constantly finds himself in the worst situations possible. For all his innocence, he's also strong and brave and not afraid to stand up for himself. Kieran falls head over heels for this man who wrecks his carefully structured world. All he wants to do is protect him and keep him safe, but Haz keeps running headfirst into danger. Every situation these two ended up in had me laughing out loud! To see this broody, grumpy man reduced to following the whims of a tiny tornado, amused me so much.

"“You are essential, baby doll. The one and only thing I will never live without. Wherever I go, you go too.” There went my insides again. Liquified. Butter left out in the hot sun. Never in my whole life had I been essential to anyone. Not even to the people who made me."

From hospital rescues to fish co-parents, these two are made for each other. Haz's light breathes life into Kieran, while Kieran showers Haz with the love and security he's been missing his whole life. Also, I'm so intrigued by their besties Ghost and Rett and I can't wait to read their story! But first, you need to read this opposites attract romance full of thrills, possessive caretaking and enough shenanigans to keep you thoroughly entertained!

ARC REVIEW
The Hazard and the Hitman by @cambriahebert
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️¾ (4.75/5)

This was my first book by Cambria Hebert, and I have a feeling it’s only the start of my love affair with her writing. Above all, it was sexy (SO. SEXY.), but it also struck the perfect balance of action, humor, and tenderness. Their hospital meet-cute? Hilarious—and somehow also oddly sweet.

Haz has so many layers, which makes him a fascinating character. At first glance, he seems like an anxiety-ridden mess, incapable of standing on his own two feet (literally), and a little meek. And sometimes he is those things. But he’s also the guy who blurts out exactly what he wants, manages to evade multiple attempts on his life, and jumps into a fight without hesitation if he thinks Kieran needs him. And don’t get me started on his adorable obsession with ugly fish. Honestly, I think he would make an incredible—if unintentionally hilarious—best friend.

And Kieran? I am SO here for the gruff, obsessive hitman. His possessive instincts kick in immediately the moment he sees a kind of innocence in Haz that’s completely missing from his own life. From that point on, he’s determined to keep him. I loved the way Kieran sees Haz as the light to his darkness—it gives their relationship such a beautiful emotional balance.

It’s impossible not to fall for Haz and Kieran together. I fully bought into their insta-love, especially with the absolutely scorching chemistry between them from the moment they meet. But it’s not just lust. Haz feels safe for the first time in his life, while Kieran discovers he wants to protect someone rather than hurt them. They claim each other in every sense of the word—and I loved every second of it.

I cannot wait for the next book in The Protectors series. I just know I’m going to fall for Ghost and Pip.

OMG I just adored this new MM romance from Cambria Hebert. It had her signature feels and lots of laughs, while also giving us a mini mystery to solve along with the characters. The more clues we got in regards to the reason for Haz's attempted unaliving by some very bad men, the more it seemed to only add up to one thing. I was hoping I was wrong, but in this case I wasn't. Thank goodness Haz and his innocent ways had secured himself the most capable body guard ever in his Hitman Kieran.

"𝚃𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚖𝚊𝚗 𝚠𝚊𝚜 𝚏𝚎𝚛𝚊𝚕 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚙𝚘𝚜𝚜𝚎𝚜𝚜𝚒𝚟𝚎 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎𝚕𝚢 𝚊 𝚕𝚒𝚝𝚝𝚕𝚎 𝚞𝚗𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚎𝚍...𝚋𝚞𝚝 𝙸 𝚌𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍 𝚜𝚎𝚎 𝚒𝚝 𝚛𝚒𝚐𝚑𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎 𝚒𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚋𝚕𝚞𝚎𝚜𝚝 𝚙𝚊𝚛𝚝 𝚘𝚏 𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚛𝚎. 𝙷𝚎'𝚍 𝚗𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚛 𝚑𝚞𝚛𝚝 𝚖𝚎."

The hospital meet cute was one of my favorite scenes in the book. Like it was so out there, but I just could not stop laughing at Haz having attempted to find a ride home from the hospital from some random man on a hookup app. A man, it turns out, who also happens to be a freaking HITMAN! The ways that could have gone badly were not lost on me, nor Kieran apparently, since he decided that Haz was going home with him.

This romance was very insta-love, but for me it worked. Kieran is definitely not your average human in terms of emotions and Hazard has spent his entire life alone. Of course he's going to cling to a man who promises that he's going to be protected from now on. Kieran may be a moody AH sometimes, but he certainly keeps his promises to his little Hazard. All Haz has to do is bat those big eyes and Kieran is helpless to deny him. And between the sheets? Holy momma was this book hot!! And the steam was plentiful, without being too much. It hit the sweet spot for me just right.

Of course A Cambria Hebert book isn't complete without a side character to fall in love with too and that man would be Ghost. I'm so intrigued to learn more about him and I absolutely NEED to find out how he and a certain twink knew each other. Was he a past hookup or was this younger man someone from his past? I have all the questions and hopefully I will find answers in the form of a book 2 in this series!

This story follows Haz, a sweet and anxious guy who ends up in the hospital after a car accident with no one to call. In a desperate moment, he messages a stranger from a dating app to pretend to be his boyfriend so he can get discharged. That stranger is Kieran. Calm. Controlled. Extremely dangerous. Secretly a professional hitman.
What begins as fake dating slowly turns into protection, obsession, and something much deeper. Haz unknowingly becomes a target & from that moment, Kieran shifts from pretending to protecting. Not for money. Not for a job. But for him.
Every 2-3 chapters had a “touch him & die” energy 😭 The way Kieran positions himself between Haz and any threat. The way his tone changes when someone even looks at Haz wrong. The way he can eliminate danger without hesitation and then gently fix Haz’s blanket seconds later. The duality was everything.
Haz is such a soft soul. He overthinks. He panics. He doubts himself. But he still stands strong when it matters. Watching him slowly realize that someone is choosing him, fully and fiercely, was emotional in the best way.
Kieran being dangerous for the world but soft for him only was my favorite part. He does not suddenly become good. He does not change who he is. He simply decides that Haz belongs under his protection. That possessive devotion was written so well. Intense but meaningful.
The storyline was strong from start to finish. The suspense, the mastermind reveal, the action scenes, everything blended perfectly with the romance.
Haz choosing Kieran knowing exactly who he is made the ending powerful. It was not about fixing the villain. It was about loving the man behind the danger.
Best MM romance of 2026 for me. Easily.

Immediately yes!!!

I received this book for free for my honest review.

This book is an absolute delight: I loved just about everything about it.

Hazier is described once as a “walking banana peel.” He is an orphan who ends up in the hospital following a car accident and needs someone to be there for the hospital to allow him to sign out. He goes to a dating app hoping a stranger will pretend to be his boyfriend but gets shot down.

Kieran is a hitman just getting off a job and is looking for a quick lay to take the edge off. He gots on an app and sees a picture of a lovely cherub. After some back and forth about why he needs to go to the hospital to pick up his hook-up, his cherub leaves him on read. He goes anyway.

This book is, to me, absolutely hysterical. The banter is refreshingly funny and both MMC’s are charming in their own ways. The writing flows and the story is easy to follow. The action scenes are described so well I really can see when is happening on page. The spice spices and they are so horny for each other.

There is an insta-lovey element born out of obsessive possessiveness that works with the timeline, which is only about a week throughout the book I believe. Even if that isn’t your thing this book makes it believable.

I laughed out loud so often throughout this story, it had me giddy and kicking my feet at times. Kieran is such a badass but also a complete pushover and his anal retentiveness over sanitary practices and cleanliness is tested through the book and reflected in hilarious inner commentary.

I love this book and 100% will be hassling the author for any information for a second book with the secondary characters.

A fantastic and fun read.

I loved this when it was a shorter version in one of the Heart2Heart anthologies and this expanded full length version is utterly brilliant.

Haz and Keiran are about complete opposites as you can get without going into ridiculously comedic settings and their meet/cute is also utterly bonkers and absolutely brilliant.

After Haz's car crashes during a storm, he ends up in hospital, unable to leave as he's got a concussion if he doesn't have anyone at home.

A quick request on the Heart2Heart app sees him asking a stranger to come and pretend he's his boyfriend so he can get out before the bill he can't afford to pay gets even higher.

Of course, this is just the beginning of a whole bunch of hilarious happenings between him and Keiran, who's a government hitman and the very definition of the grumpy one as they stumble and fall their way into love.

Keiran can't believe Haz really is a total innocent who sees the world with rose tinted specs, Haz has no clue the tall dark and handsome man who took him home kills bad people for a living.

There's also a whole bunch of seriously steamy sex, as Keiran discovers he's got a very possessive streak when it comes to the younger man, he also very quickly realises he wants to keep him and protect him when he discovers how hard a life he's had.

Throw in a bunch of crazy side plots involving the mob and one of Keiran's old special ops military colleagues with a smart mouth and a secret of his own, and you get a riot of a book which had me smiling from start to finish.

This book is the first book I have read from this author and I really enjoyed it. It was funny, spicy and had wonderful characters. Kieran is protective without being overbearing/controlling and I love that he lets Hazard get away with anything. Haz is adorable and soft, but he isn't weak and his sass was hilarious. I recommend this story if you are looking for a loner grump who falls (reluctantly) for a sweet but sassy sunshine who finds himself in need of protecting.

Oh my stars! This one deserves so many more than I can give!! The Hazard and The Hitman was the first book in Cambria’s The Protectors series. It had me wanting to race through the pages to see what would happen next but at the same time, take it slow because I didn’t want it to end!! Talk about a sweet suspenseful romance!!

After landing in the hospital, Haz needed to find someone to come get him. Logging in to his dating app to see who was available might seem extreme for some people, but the escalating dread of all things hospital was winning. Unfortunately, that didn’t go as planned so the only thing left to do was make a run for it. Of course, Haz would run straight into a wall of man who agreed to be his fake boyfriend but with conditions.

Kieran made sure Haz stayed until he was cleared to go, got a full belly of food, and some much needed rest. Which didn’t seem to help Haz’s luck. Not only had he been in a car accident, but someone had trashed his apartment and was coming for more. Could Kieran keep them both safe or would he end up being a casualty?

Let’s talk about three of my favorite things…the plants, fish daddy, and the murder locker! Oh my heart!! The details during all these scenes were top notch. Well, the whole book was top notch. I was on the edge of my seat in some scenes, and fanning myself in others! Not to mention laughing at Haz’s antics and swooning at Kieran’s protective broodiness!! I hope we see these two (and all their “kids”) again! I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next!!

Oh my how I love Haz. He is a big ol clumsy goof but he is the absolute sweetest. He had moments that he was so sassy and a brat and I loved how no matter how down on his luck he was, he never let it effect him. I mean he had so many horrible moments and he was still crackin jokes and mouthin off. His neediness really worked, especially since Kieran was happy to obliged him, I mean the man was obsessed with a capital O.

Kieran, my broody grumpy but deep down caring and passionate man. I love how he is a stone cold assassin but when it comes to Haz he is a complete softie. Haz had him in knots from their first meeting and it only got worse as time went on.

I really enjoyed watching these two form their bond. Kieran the protector and caretaker and Haz the Hazard. He truly earned that nickname. They slowly formed a deeper connection but holy hell their passion has a fast burn and it was HOT 🥵

Their banter, top tier. Their chemistry, smokin hot. Their mutual obsession, while definitely red flag worthy, it worked for them and it was perfect.

I absolutely loved Ghost and Rett and hope we get more on them. I can't wait to see wait else is to come in this world.

More of a 3 1/2

Was it fun to read? Sure. Was it also a bit ridiculous? Absolutely.

Haz had me from the get go. I have such a soft spot for people who age out of the system and have no family. Even worse when they really have no friends either. Haz is funny, self deprecating and just kind of deals with whatever life gives him. The fact that he goes on a hook up app to find someone willing to pretend to be his boyfriend to spring him from the hospital says more about our country than him.

Keiran is the complete opposite. He has no one by choice. No entanglements (except his friend Ghost), no relationships, nothing. Hook ups when he needs it. But Haz and his gorgeous eyes, innocent face and twink self suck him in. Like, immediately.

This is where it was a bit ridiculous for me. Almost immediately Keiran is all "MINE! MINE! MINE!" For a guy who doesn't do relationships it was a bit much. His need to take care of Haz constantly was over the top. I get he's an alpha but...

BUT the plot outside of the romance. LOVED IT. Mafia and attempted murder and inept assassins and fish and 4 jobs. So fun. Did I figure it out? Yup. But it was still so fun to read. The who, what, why and when made so much sense when you get there.

The characters were fun, albeit a bit of a charicature. There's a connection I am hoping we find out more about in another book. I feel like there was a lot of sex as filler that wasn't really necessary. Especially after "No, we can't, you're hurt..."

The Hazard and the Hitman ARC Review

4.5⭐️
3.5🌶️

The relationship timeline in this book is 0-100 and it’s lowkey what I need IRL. I hate small talk, just find me adorable and never leave me!

A macho man Hitman and a sensitive civilian with an iron-grade sense of perseverance? Yea that is an immediate yes from me!

The beginning of this book could not have prepared me for the hilarious, raunchy and sometimes bloody events that would take place throughout the story.

It was fast paced and punchy (no pun intended) and definitely good for anyone that needs a jolt of excitement in their weekly readings!

Hazier is a down on his luck sweetheart and I immediately resonated with his caring angel persona. He was just such a sensitive soul and took care of everything around him. What I didn’t expect was his kick butt bratty side and let me tell you it was just as amazing to witness.

Kieran was just alpha male but with a soul. He was gruff and aggressive but still managed to be the biggest sweetheart in his own twisted way. I loved the protector role that he played with Haz and sue me ok I actually to like insta-love. I guess in this case it would be insta-lust followed closely by love.

As for the future of this series I think it’s safe to say I need the next book EXPEDITIOUSLY!! I am obsessed with ghost and I need to know more about him. This series and author are definitely going on my auto-buy list.

That is all good day to all!!

I am not usually a fan of instalove/lust, but Cambria Hebert manages to make this fast-burn also a deeply emotional, healing love story. And when I say burn, I mean SCORCHING. The spicy scenes were wildly hot while maintaining a tenderness that made it impossible to put down.

Kieran does take the “touch him and d!e” trope to a bit of an extreme sometimes, but hey…some of those situations were pretty extreme to begin with. It doesn’t help that Haz is, well, a hazard unto himself. But that makes Kieran’s overprotective, possessive streak all the more fun. Who doesn’t love to see a grumpy, hardened hottie completely melt for the precious, heart-of-gold MC?

Kieran and Haz’s chemistry is off the charts, but their relationship is carried by their quippy banter and passionate love for one another. Although the plot was a bit predictable, it doesn’t take away the non-stop entertainment. I hope to read about Ghost and Rett next…they definitely caught my interest 👀

I can already tell -- this is going to be another can't-get-enough series from Cambria Hebert!

I was already so thirsty for more of Haz and Kieran after the Heart2Heart short -- and the rest of their story definitely does not disappoint! It's got suspense, danger, hurt/comfort, forced proximity, food as a love language, a sweet/innocent MMC and a dark/possessive MMC... plus lovable side characters galore!

Haz is down on his luck and stuck in the hospital after a car accident -- when he reaches out to a stranger on a dating app for a last-ditch effort at getting out. After he gets shut down -- he definitely doesn't expect the dark, mysterious and oh-so-alluring Kieran to answer his distress call. Kieran is a hitman -- and the last thing he needs is a "Hazard" in his way, but once he gets a glimpse of his innocent eyes, there's absolutely no turning back.

Can I please have my very own Kieran??? He will -- and does -- do absolutely anything for Haz. He takes devotion to a whole new level. He cooks healthy and delicious meals, he likes things neat and tidy (maybe a tad too much), and he's the ultimate protector. You cannot possibly help but love Haz. He's friendly, adorable, kind, clumsy, and cares for all creatures great and small. He's a bit of a mess, but who isn't? But he's still so strong and is the one who breaks down all of Kieran's walls.

The banter in this book is fantastic, and there are so many memorable moments and tidbits. The plant children -- Cliff and Atlas. Food as a love language (soup and French toast)! Meetups with the mob. A gun fight in a fish store (immaculate visuals here)! All the comic relief from Kieran's non-BFF Ghost. I love Ghost. Please give Ghost his own book. I need more.

This book is definitely one of my new faves!

MM romance isn’t something I generally seek out. I don’t dislike it, or actively avoid it, it’s just not my go to. So, normally I only read it if it’s part of a series or if it’s by an author I love. Unless something jumps out and grabs me, which was completely the case with this one. I saw the tropes and was hooked, then realised it was MM and didn’t care.

And when I first picked it up, I couldn't remember exactly why I signed up to review it, I just remembered that I really wanted to read it. So, I dove in with no idea what to expect and I didn't want to put it down. The characters were awesome, the story was so engrossing, and I felt all the feels.

Poor Haz had been through it all and yet he was so upbeat and happy and just rolled with the punches. And the punches just kept right on coming. And then he would say something and I would literally be laughing out loud, taken completely by surprise.

But maybe my sympathy should have been saved for Kieran. He had this perfect, orderly life and was completely blindsided by Haz, who was chaos personified. But God, Kieran was the perfect boyfriend, and he loved Haz so hard it gave me the warm fuzzies, even when he was trying to be scary and intimidating.

The whole book was fun and so easy to get lost in and I am praying that Ghost and Rett get a book soon because Ghost has absolutely got a story I want to hear.

This story is so much fun. I really enjoyed the fast-paced nature of this story, have due to do with a series of unfortunate events and bad luck that throws Hazard directly into the pathway of Kieran. Kieran, after meeting Hazard, is quickly smitten and completely enthralled with quirky, sweet, and completely unpretentious Haz.

Their quick-burning romance is filled with a strong possessiveness from both Kieran and Haz. I really enjoyed Kieran's determination to prove his care, loyalty, and eventually love to Haz. Haz has had such a lonely and challenging life, so finding someone who genuinely cares and wants to protect and care for him is both new and terrifying.

Together, these two complete one another. They bring forth elements that the other was missing, and together they are an unstoppable team. Another aspect of this story I really enjoyed is the playful tone. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and the mystery and overall adventurous nature of the story are fun and welcome elements.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story and look forward to seeing what comes next in this world of entertaining and fascinating characters.

The Hazard And The Hitman is book one in the Protectors series. This MM romance story is about Haz and Kieran.

Haz is shy, anxious, clumsy and works multiple jobs. Kieran is broody, bossy, possessive and also happens to be a hitman. Right from the start of this story I was hooked. I loved how these two met, and although it was crazy how fast things moved with Haz and Kieran, I was here for it. Insta attraction/love can be hit or miss for me, and I have to say I think it worked for this story.

Haz was so sweet yet I loved when he got sassy with Kieran. Kieran was very disciplined and I loved how he ended up accepting Haz and all of his chaos. I really loved their dynamic. Haz was innocent and had the biggest heart, and it was such a joy to see Kieran go soft for only him. Their chemistry was amazing and they definitely gave us some spicy moments. I couldn’t get enough of Kieran’s protectiveness, possessiveness and his whole touch him and die. The man definitely had me swooning.

Overall, I was very entertained with this story and thought it was such a fun book. I enjoyed the suspense and danger, and I also loved the side characters Ghost and Rett. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this world.

✨ ARC Review ✨

When I say that this book simultaneously brought me out of a book hangover and then put me right back into one... I mean that with my entire soul 🤣🫣.

I am such a sucker for the grumpy, broody 'bad man' falls hard and fast for the sunshiny golden retriever and this hit that spot so WELL 🔥. Seriously, Kieran and Haz are absolute PERFECTION 💯. I adored every interaction between them, and their banter had me cackling one minute, swooning the next 🫶. I mean their entire hospital meet-cute to the drama and suspense had me DEVOURING this book so fast.

I am both so happy I read it and so sad it's finished 😭, if you love your MC's morally grey but absolute cinnamon rolls for their counterparts then look no further! This is right up your alley 😈. Kieran is an absolute grump with what he describes as a 'marshmallow spine' for his Hazard, and Haz is such a strong character in his own right. He's been THROUGH it, and yet never lets it keep him down, or to see the bright side and the best in life 🥹. He's everything Kieran didn't know he needed and blasted through Kieran's walls with all his lightness 💜.

The side characters are also fantastic! I mean it, I am down on my knees begging for Ghost & Rhett's story because I loved them just as much as Kieran and Haz 😍🤞.
