Zatanna is so freaking hot it's killing me. Also great issue, building up to a big fight.

Absolute Wonder Woman #18 is a slower, more deliberate issue, but it absolutely works. I didn’t mind the pacing at all—in fact, it builds tension and character in a really satisfying way.

The focus on Diana and Zatanna continues to be a standout. Their dynamic adds emotional weight to everything going on, especially as the stakes keep escalating on the magical side of the story. This issue leans into that mythology and lets things breathe, which made the world feel even bigger and more dangerous.

The art is incredible as always—every page feels purposeful, with strong layouts and color work that elevate the tone.

This felt like a true bridge issue, but one that actually strengthens the run instead of slowing it down. Everything is clearly building toward something big.

Woah that is absolutely what I am talking about, squad up! Now I have to admit the most devastating part of this issue comes right at the start as we pickup from the last issue as Giovanni Zatara is ripping into Diana with his suped up blood magic as he immediately ripped away her magic arm and now utilizes a spell to burn her all the way through. Diana does the only thing you can naturally do when burning…she flees do the safety at home, but in the process she leaves behind Barbara who is shocked to see Diana leave her. I swear if anything happens to Barbara this soon!! I need at least another 100 issues of this series before she is turned into cheetah, but that may also be too wishful thinking, lol. As Diana desperately tries to fly away she suddenly reaches a point where she can’t anymore as she succumbs to her weakness and falls into the ocean below, luckily Pegasus wasn’t too far behind to dive down and pick her up to take her the rest of the way. As she touches down in the Hieron, Ferdinand and Petra are nearby to try and help her but they do not know any magic…luckily Zatanna shows up immediately after and pushes them aside to help Diana. She immediately removes the spell and the binding spell Zatanna put on Diana’s voice, but the moment Diana regains her strength back it is ON SITE with Zatanna for everything that has one down thus far, hahaha I can’t blame her at all. Nor should you, emotions are running high and that’s one thing that makes Diana so special. As we jump back to Diana’s youth on the wild isle and her short time with Aphrodite, we find out that the goddess is unsure of how to teach Diana. She recognizes that love is an eternally complicated thing that is possible of destroying anyone, but Aphrodite can offer no other advice other than Diana staying open and compassionate about all things…no matter how vulnerable it may leave her. But Diana sees past it and how that can be a positive. Humans are vulnerable creatures so if she is to better understand them and be a proper champion for them…then she also must be vulnerable.

As Aphrodite fades away in Diana’s mind, she wakes up to find Zatanna standing over her instead. Zatanna tried to get Diana to calm down for a second, but once again tensions are running high as Diana activates a lightning spell which seems to sprout and dance around Zatanna, who responds with he own bolt of Lightning. As the dust settles from the lightning, Diana is revealed to be behind Zatanna, using her one arm to choke hold her to the ground. Which gives us a great showcase of the other ways Zatanna can perform spells…such as through sign language so she can phase through Diana. Zatanna fights back by flying high above, sprouting magic wings, and sending down another bolt of lighting before getting in position to drag Diana under the nearby water. But Diana has a lot of friends and the sentient trident of Poseidon is never far when she is in the water. Diana was able to command it to pull her from the water and trap Zatanna in a bubble of water. Diana realizes that she has been a lot angrier in this situation than with the others, but it’s because she expects more from a fellow witch. As Zatanna is dropped to the ground she looks up to find Diana kneeling beside her as her friends surround her. I’m glad the dialogue has finally been properly opened as Zatanna apologizes for coming to save Diana only anger she bound her, a cardinal sin of witch on witch crime. But Zatanna explains she didn’t have many options as Cale sent them to kill her and if she had another option she would have taken it. But Zatanna also points out that her presence here should have been a sign she meant no harm, after all she got through Diana’s wards without issue. But Zatanna also admits that while you are burning alive it’s a little hard to think about the details. Zatanna further explains that the spell which afflicted Diana was one of her fathers…love is complicated after all, and Diana would never ask Zatanna to harm her own father. Zatanna agrees and has plans to save him, and some of those methods may help Diana…but that is of course not Zatanna’s main end goal. Honesty, the foundation of any proper relationship and we finally got here. Diana collects the materials she needs and with a flash of lighting she has returned her arm and now dons her full set of armor so she may go and face Giovanni. As a final word before leaving, Zatanna warns Diana against letting Cale touch her with her hands…apparently Cale always wears gloves because Zatanna cursed her hands.

As Diana makes it back to the city she sends Pegasus off to find Giovanni while she deals with something else first. She finds Ara, queen of the men-fish, and immediately uses a spell to purge the parasite from her system. Diana then told Ara where she last saw her men-fish heading, allowing her to run and swim to freedom to be reunited with her people. But before she leaves she returns the kindness to Diana with information. Apparently Giganta will not leave if she is freed and cannot be trusted, and Zatara may not be able to be freed at all. As Ara leaves Diana looks over to find that Pegasus has engaged Giovanni in combat. Diana slips over to his location through the alleyways as she is still unsure she can take him, but she still has to stop him before he kills anyone else. Diana recants a prayer for protection as she pulls the troika from her bag. This is a new lasso we have not seen yet and according to Diana it sounds like for a good reason, as it always leaves the user changed. She steps out, eyes now glowing green as she wields the three whipped lasso, as she faces Giovanni with the lass blessed by Hecate herself. Apparently the lasso knows all of his secrets and will be the thing to break them away from him. Oooooh.

After last issue's "massive" throwdown, things take a quieter turn as Wonder Woman retreats to lick her wounds and we get a fair bit of talking explaining what's happened/happening in this arc.

This issue is necessary to make the arc work and will be fine in the trade collection but as a monthly installment is certainly less impressive than the previous issue. That said, it's solid storytelling. There is one thing that confused me though, Wonder Woman has a very obvious injury throughout the issue which seems to be gone once she returns in armour. I had to check I hadn't missed a page but I hadn't. I've no idea how she recovers beyond maybe literally magical healing abilities? I'd have appreciated a clearer explanation or maybe I missed something obvious?

The art is good but doesn't get as many opportunities to shine here. I confess that the Zatanna redesign is growing on me even if it's paling in comparison to the tux, tights and top hat classic.

This is a very solid issue that suffers mostly from being a mid arc exposition issue and the general high quality set by this series.

Overall = 3/5
Writing = 3/5
Art = 4/5

Will I read the next issue? Yes

Wait for the trade collection? I'm enjoying monthly but this is a "quiet" issue with little to no action. In trade you wouldn't notice this as there's presumably more action in the next issue.

Did I need to read previous issues/series? Yes, this would be confusing as a first issue.

Will I read previous issues? I've read all the issues in this arc and getting around to catching up via trade collections.

Another strong installment in Absolute Wonder Woman! As I continue reading, I’m realizing I enjoy this series more when I can experience a full arc all at once rather than waiting month to month. The story is excellent, but individual issues don’t quite capture the same impact that a complete arc delivers. I’ll still pick up the remaining issues, but I’ll likely save them to read together moving forward.
This issue itself is fantastic. I really enjoyed seeing Diana briefly confront and battle Giovanni Zatara. Much of the story centers on Zatanna catching Diana up to speed, shifting alliances fairly quickly, and setting the stage for a larger confrontation with Zatara. It all builds nicely toward what feels like a bigger threat ahead.
The artwork continues to be beautiful and consistently impressive. At this point, it’s hard to add anything new beyond praising how strong it remains.
I highly recommend both this issue and the series overall. Grade: A

Hayden Sherman’s character designs for all of the gods and goddesses are so cool. Aphrodite looks pretty creepy, but it’s a really striking design. The fight sequence with Zatanna is fun, both witches exchanging magical blows. I love how Diana is building up her motley crew, though poor Barbara’s getting left out.

I can't tell if I'm gwtting queerbaited tbh. Regardless of that, a great issue with cool Zatanna shit I can't wait to see more of. I'm glad we finally see the "mainline" lazzo of truth, very cool.
Absolute Zatanna NEEEDS a solo ongoing or mini she's so cool and I LOVE HER.

This was a great build up for the next fight and I love the fact that Diana can realize when she is overreacting. Zatana was dangerous and Diana acted correctly, but didn’t let her anger control her.

A new face of Zatara, a new friend in Zatanna, an uncovered enemy in Cale: the last Amazon will definitely have to fight her way to victory!

Great issue! This was more of a set up one for the final two issues of this arc. I’m hoping Zatanna comes in clutch for the final battle.

Zatanna is a lot of fun. I'll be happy to see more of her, and how Zatarra gets dealt with and how the Troika gets used.

This is really good work. Zatana's boats are so neat. I just second handedly realised that Wonder woman and Batman are really huge. Also what happened with Barbara? I hope she is safe.
