Anna Porter knows better than most how cruel life can be. After finally facing the horrific tortures of her childhood, it's time for her to try and embrace her happily ever after. The next chapter of her life brings new friendships, new love and new challenges for Anna. Yet, while trying to overcome her fears and let go of the memories which plague her, the little girl she was makes it difficult to forget what happened. Is her past really behind her? Can Anna finally learn to fly?
I was blessed by the author to let me BETA read this amazing book.
What can I say? I fell in love with Anne's writing from the first sentence in Breaking Free: Una Familia Segura. I fell in love with the story, characters and simply Annie. She is an amazingly talented person and she cares about her readers <3 But Anyway, the BOOK.
OMG. That's about sums everything up. And some: WOWs, Holy Awesomeness also... I could come up with few more...
The story pick up, where the first one ended. It's after the trial, Anna is back home, safe with her new family and friends. The only difference now is: she has a boyfriend. Jake. Her big brother best friend and also her friend. Everything seems perfect. She is moving on. He is accepting her past and helped her move on. But...there is always a but. She is never herself when with him. She is nervous. She is not able to be that carefree girl that was starting to bloom when he was her friend. She is nervous and is not sure how to behave. What is more Chloe, her BFF is not happy that Anna is agreeing to everything what Jake says. And also Logan feels pushed away from both of them. Anna has to chose what is best for her, her family and friends.
Even though this book doesn't have so much drama and tragedy that makes you cry on every single chapter, it makes you feel so much better at the end of the book. You can see that Anna grew up. She can finally move on. She has her new love, her friends, family and even when her past is catching up with her, she is still able to fly.
I loved this book. I cannot wait for the next book from Annie. Either in this series, if she plans to write any, or a totally different one. I am simply hooked on her writing style. <3
I’ve not cried so hard for a character in years. This is a truly breathtaking story of pain, suffering and hope and one that is highly recommended.
Yes, this serial is essentially about a 16/17-year-old and her friends but it’s so much more. It’s a portrayal of a future free of suffering and one in the arms of people of who love unconditionally. This is definitely not an easy story to read. The abuse suffered by Anna is difficult to stomach and despite her now living in the arms of a loving family, Anna’s past rears its ugly head on more than one occasion to keep her from being free of her demons.
This really was a beautiful story and one I will always remember fondly. Finding your feet into adulthood is difficult for most people but for Anna, it’s nearly impossible as her pain and suffering continue to form the teenager that she is today. I loved the way Ethan saved her from herself in a way that Jake couldn’t. Logan is the perfect brother to Anna, despite one rather impressive fall from grace, and his character was instantly loveable.
I read this book through the night, sobbing quietly to myself but at the same time turning the pages as quickly as I could to savour every nuance of this story. If you love Jillian Dodd’s Keatyn Chronicles series then you will love the characters in this serial. They play hard, drink hard and love hard, a perfect basis for any YA story.
Annie Hughes may not be a hugely well-known author but she deserves to be, her storytelling is pure bliss!

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this book.
Annie Hughes is an author that I know could never disappoint me. Whether it be a paragraph she sends me, or a novel, I am immediately enthralled. She writes with a passion that enables mine, and other readers, emotions to be completely taken hostage. And our attention of course! I couldn't put her books down, even if I wanted to!
Breaking Free: Learning to Fly was no exception to this, I absolutely adored every part! This flowed from the first book flawlessly, in my opinion. There are certainly some unexpected routes in this book, but that's one of the many things I loved about it, it's so unpredictable!
Although her Stepfathers trial is over, Anna has a long way to go before she can 'fly alone'. This is portrayed perfectly in the book; Anna's mixed emotions, confusion over her identity and who she is supposed to be, now that she has a loving home and family, which was something she didn't ever dare dream of before.
If you loved the first book, you definitely will this one! There may be moments where you're slightly mad at the author, Anna, and all the other characters... But you will understand everything in the end.
Well done Annie, on another incredible story, another one to add to my favourites! I highly recommend this book!
Anna's journey continues in Learning to Fly which picks up where Una Familia Segura left off.
Where to begin... I laughed & cried, sometimes both at the same time. I may have hated Annie a time or two for the twists & turns she throws in but I must admit all is forgiven in the end as she has done it again with another phenomenal story that had me hooked from start to finish!
It's no secret I ADORE Anna & just wanna hug her, HARD (which she would HATE! Well, suck it up buttercup.)
She truly amazes me with all she has overcome but can the broken girl truly learn to fly? Certainly not without the support of her family & friends but having been dealt such a terrible hand in life then being betrayed by the one person she trusted in her life 'before the Porters' can Anna allow them in & trust again?
I have so much love for the supporting characters David, Mel, Logan & Chloe, as well as some new characters (who all deserve their own story) but I will refrain from talking about them further as this is all about Anna.
This is a MUST READ series, so go find out for yourself just how beautiful it is.
If you've not read the the book Breaking Free : Una Familia Segura then stop and get it first .
Learning to Fly had me from page one.
This book starts right where the last left us . Anna has now to learn how to move on with life after the trial.
This is something that doesn't come easy for Anna when you have nothing to compare to how can you know what's right and what's not ?
Hold on for the bumps and emotion this book will bring . It will have you angry laughing crying and quite simply loving it.
I absolutely love Annie's style of writing it captures you and there is no stepping away . The way her characters come alive as you read and the way you need more (hint hint Annie) it's what makes me love this Amazing Lady .
I was kindly gifted this to BETA read and I am so glad I was one of the lucky ones to be chosen!
I loved the first book, it was full of drama and plot twists that kept it exciting for a debut novel.
Although this one didn't have as much drama in it, I loved it just as much as I did the first one! There was just enough drama to keep you interested and keep turning those pages. There was one bit I didn't like though that upset me, Jake! I loved him in the first book but Anna just wasn't herself around him.
This book sees Anna grow and spread her wings becoming a beautiful woman that we always known her to be she just has to believe it herself!
Returning to Anna Porters story and seeing how things progressed after the first book (Una Familia Segura), was amazing and the author made it seemless. So many follow up books leave me struggling to recollect the first story, but this one didn't let me down.
As Anna tries to piece together her life, we see her become the young woman she has never truly got the chance to be. To develop friendships, relationships, enjoy parties and generally become a teenager. To start living in her own right. It's like she grew right there in every page.
The enormity of the love and pride I felt for this girl was unreal. This book was by no means sweetness and light, and still faces her demons in one way or another, but it took me by storm and truly got in my heart as well as my head. The love this girl has around her, by not just friends, but those she considers family knows no bounds....even after the pain and hurt she's experienced at others hands.
Just an incredible book...I didn't want it to end and say goodbye to an amazing set of characters.
Excerpt: Over the last 12 months I've watched you blossom into a strong, beautiful young woman. You can't let this destroy that. If you keep living in the past, you'll only ruin your chance of thriving in the future. It's time to let it go Anna, it's time to fly....
Phew... deep breaths, Becky, deep breaths - here's the Kleenex. I hate to love Annie's writing, because I love to hate all the things it does to me - Annie Hughes definitely has a gift for writing in way that will make your insides feel a million shades of fucked up, that will leave you an emotional mess. Her books will make you feel emotionally drained; they will make you angry, and they will be proof to you that words can hurt you - that a story is as much of a weapon as a knife. Her books will, however, also give you butterflies; they will make you fall in love, explore friendships, and they will make you laugh your heart out. Both Breaking Free: Una Familia Segura, as well as Breaking Free: Learning to Fly, are novels that will touch your heart and soul - and you better stock up on tissues, chocolate and ice cream before starting either.
As I pointed out in my review of Breaking Free: Una Familia Segura, part one in the series, Annie's writing is very authentic, and makes it extremely easy to believe that the narrator is a girl in her teenage years. All throughout both novels, the writing stays in character and the flow of the story never gets disrupted, so you never even once doubt the protagonist's credibility - which makes it impossible not to sympathize with her, and her feelings automatically become yours, making this series the emotional rollercoaster that it is.
n the beginning, Breaking Free: Learning to Fly held a little too much teenage drama for me. There were times at which I found myself thinking Jeez, this has more drama than a Spanish telenovela, but then I thought back to my own time at an American high school and I had to realize that while it might be a tad bit exaggerated for the sake of the story and its development, there are teenagers whose life seems to be composed of nothing but drama, so it was a kink I am more than willing to overlook.
All in all, this is a read I can't give any less than five stars to. When the writing connects you so deeply to the characters, and when the novel makes you both cry your eyes out and laugh at the top of your lungs, you just know it's an all-round perfect read!

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I want to start by saying I love this book/series but love feels like it doesn't do what I felt justice! I adore these books by Annie and feel very lucky that I got the chance to read them, especially this on before it was released.
Breaking Free: Learning to Fly picks up where Una Familia Segura left us and I don't think I have been quite so eager to jump into a book as I was this one and I wasn't disappointed or let down in any way.
The story itself made me fall even more in love with the world and characters Annie has created. In fact I want to move there and live there permanently because I never want this story to be over and I adore it that much. Anna still has my heart, she stole my heart in the first book and has further cemented herself in it. I love reading through her, I loved feeling all the emotions with her and mostly I love her relationships- with Logan, with her friends and with her parents David and Mel. Throughout the book and Anna's story you will laugh with her, you will feel her pain and you will want to protect her and this is a credit to Annie's writing.
Again I could rant for ages and tell you repeatedly how amazing this book is but the only way you will find out is to read it for yourself and take the journey! What are you waiting for??
Breaking Free: Learning to Fly is the sequel to Breaking Free: Una Familia Segura by Author Annie Hughes. I received an Arc of this book strictly for the purpose of an honest review. Anna's story picks up months after the last, where she feels and believes she's lost her friends and has a very difficult time dealing with it. This story Anna has to learn how to be herself, and not who she believes she should be. While trying to find her wings, she has her struggles with confidence and self worth. The characters are roughly all of whom were in the first book, the majority of them are not only likeable, but endearing as well. The few who you are supposed to hate, you will with a vengance. While I experienced every emotion you could think of, I think I laughed and sobbed the most out of them. Just when you think Anna has truly found her way, her nightmare of her past raises it's ugly head once more. Can she finally bury her past and let it stay thereand be a typical teen? I won't give any hints or spoilers away. Just read this knockout book for yourself. I will be waiting impatiently for one of Ms. Hughes books to be released in the future. 5/5 worthy stars. I received this book from the author a couple a days ago and all I can say is dam, I love this book. We get to see more about Anna and how she has moved on from the end of book 1, I won't spoil it for people that haven't read it yet. I have laughed I have cried I also nearly through my mobil at the wall at certain parts in anger for Anna.
We see how Anna and logan deal with being step siblings and friends. I am happy that we see more of Anna and jake.
To be fair there isn't much more I can write with out giving away the book to you.
All I will say is that this is a must read book from authors annie hughes, from the moment I started reading this book I couldn't put it down till I was finished it. The story flows from start to finish and un like some books I have read there wasn't part that I could of predicted. All I can say is please read this book you will fall in love for the courage that Anna has had to over come
I really enjoyed this continuation on Anna’s story. I loved reading about her overcoming her demons and opening up to other people. I was extremely happy when the book started and she was with Jake as I was rooting for them throughout the whole of book 1 but then I changed my mind as I read on! It was clear to see that they weren’t right each other after all. I loved that she got with Ethan; he was adorable and so sweet and tender with Anna. I loved the family even more in this book, they were so close and supportive of each other, and it was nice to read about a drama-less family. Anna really bloomed in this book despite the setback which she handled very well. This was a brilliant read and a very sweet read. 5 stars!
I loved the first book in this series, where we meet Anna Rosa AKA Annie porter. This is a follow on from it where we follow Anna on her journey in finding herself, her new found family and teenage boy drama. This is full of wonderful, though heartfelt, twists and turns. All the characters are well developed. I found Annie's writing style simple and easy to understand but found some phrases became repetitive and slightly annoying such as *I smile small* which was said alot. other then that I enjoyed this book.
Was kindly gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book picked up right where Una Familia Segura left off. Still hard hitting but again tastefully done. New characters while the original characters are still easy to relate to. This book is not as fast paced as the first and i feel there is still some things left unanswered. Here is hoping there is a third book. Definitely worth reading
Another fantastic book from Annie Hughes! This continuation of Anna's story is just as amazing as the first book. I was sucked into this story and couldn't put it down. I love these characters and seeing them grow through their journey. The way Hughes wrote Anna's story made it so easy to feel her emotions. I was scared, heartbroken and happy right along with Anna and her friends. I can't wait to read what Annie Hughes writes next.
I HAVE LOVED THIS SERIES SO FAR AND CANT WAIT TO FIND OUT IF THERE IS MORE. ONCE YOU TRANSPORT YOURSELF INTO THEIR WORLD YOU NEVER WANT TO LEAVE. A BIT LIKE CHLOE IN ANNA'S CLOSET. AM GLAD TO SEE ANNA EVOLVE AND BECOME A STRONGER WOMEN AND BEING ABLE TO DEAL WITH THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED TO HER. A GREAT STORY WELL WRITTEN. I WISH I HAD MY OWN LOGAN :)
Another book that I couldn't put down. The continuation of Anna's struggles in discovering who she is now was well written and believable. As a reader you feel connected with the story and trials that Anna goes through. The story stays with you. One to read again and again.
I recommend this book to everyone it’s a must read. Breaking free was just as captivating as the first book Anna’s character has had to battle so much she kept me turning pages to make sure she learned to fly.
The two books in this series are now in my top five favourites! I have loved every second of reading them both. I have laughed accelerating the way and am completely in love with Logan and ethan. Just stunning!
If the first book was brilliant, this one changed the dynamic. After everything, the court case had been concluded, Anna still had to grow and become confident. Including dealing with her thoughts and feelings towards the males in her life. Brilliant.
Breaking Free: Learning to Fly by Annie Hughes ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+
Breaking Free: Learning to Fly is both a coming of age story and a teenage romance. It's the continuation of Anna's story from book one, Una Familia Segura, I'm not a big fan of sequels and felt book one had concluded nicely, so I was a little unsure of what to expect in book two. Once again, I was blown away! In fact, I think I may have liked book two more than book one!
Anna Rosa Castillo, now Anna Porter, has started her new life in America. She is ready to put the past behind her for good. She has a new home, new family, new friends, and possibly even a new love. Despite her newfound happiness, she is plagued by nightmares and uncertainties. And she is being stalked by a creep at school. Can Anna break free of her fears and learn to fly? Or will she always be a scared, broken little girl? Why is her new life suddenly falling apart all at once?
The plot was incredibly suspenseful and at times intense. I read the book straight through in a day because I just couldn't stop reading! The characters were extremely complex and mostly likable, especially Anna and the secondary characters of Chloe and Gemma. After falling in love with Jake in book one, I found myself almost hating him in book two. If it were possible to slap him through my Kindle, I surely would have. But Ethan, oh Ethan, where does one find an Ethan? He was so sweet, patient, and romantic. Did I mention that there are phrases in Spanish throughout the book? I LOVE that I was able to use my second language while reading! (Don't worry; there are translations for those of you who don't speak Spanish.)
This was my second book by Annie Hughes, and it is the second book in the Breaking Free series. While you could definitely read book one as a standalone, I strongly suggest you read book one before book two to understand the background. I look forward to seeing what else Annie Hughes has written.
Annie Hughes is in my top 5 current writers. I bought this book before it was released. I have been waiting for this and have kept checking for the release date. This book starts where the other one left off. I was so happy to get back into these characters lives. I really thought it would be hard to keep the intensity of the first book going but I was wrong. Anna has lived through so much all ready and she has to endure so much more. That is all I will say on that subject. I won't give any of the story line away because you must read this book. This is supposed to be a three book series and I can't wait for part three. Annie I love you you are amazing!!!There is only one tiny little problem for me and its the kids drinking. I know kids do get booze and do drink but they should not do so but I still love the story its fantastic. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT Did I mention I used a box of tissue and had the thought Annie how much more can you put this poor girl through? I was sucked into the book as Alice went through the looking glass, I was so emotional I had to take anxiety meds in the middle. I also read it straight through.
I was given this book and the only thing required of me was an honest review.
We pick Anna’s story from where it ended in Una Familia Segura.
I can't praise this author enough on her compassion and understanding of an extremely sensitive subject.
We are taking through Anna's journey of discovery about herself. From the beginning we see that it's easy to fall into learned behaviours and that even though we know something is not necessarily the best situation, without support we cannot break that cycle.
You will like Anna, she's a strong, loving young woman that you will feel hope for and want to be there for her as the book progresses.
At the end of the book, you are left wanting to know how life progresses for her, does she get into college? Does she work with her dad?
We're also left wanting some of the supporting characters stories, what happens with Logan? Does Jake mellow in any way? What's happened with Chloe?
This was a beautifully written conclusion but still leaves you wanting more.
Loved this book every bit as much as the first!! I cannot fault the story, not one little bit. It had me wanting to know what happened next, then I wanted to scream and wring people's neck, and slap others. I went through the emotions...all of them!!! Which is exactly what I want from a book! It took me back - just like the first one, and I finally put my finger on why I love it so much....because I wish I had a school life like that, with the friends and the drama (obvs not ALL the drama!!) and the bitchin, and the parties and the boys!!! It's fabulously endearing and so lovely to read. Annie captures the very essence of high school kids and I love it!!
Part 2 of Anna's book had me in all sorts of twists. It's an emotional roller coaster that you don't want to get off. Between everything from book 1, then Jake, just... Wow. the writer has managed to capture all of the emotion so well and make it so that it seems like she's your best friend and your living this story with her. 5*****
Wow...I have no words! Just wow! Angst! Angst! Angst! My heart was crushed so many times during this read and yet here it is whole again at the end...I am amazed and in awe of Annie Hughes and am thoroughly addicted! I highly recommend this series, you won't be disappointed!
