Air Affair

Rate this book
She’s the city’s wildest heiress. He’s a haunted pilot with nothing left to lose. Together, they’re pure combustion.

Rory Belmont has always loved speed, trouble, and the sky—usually in that order. New York society calls her reckless. The newspapers call her scandalous. Her father calls her engaged to a man she doesn’t want. But when Rory slips away from her engagement party to sit in the cockpit of a sleek biplane, she meets the one man who makes her heart race faster than flight itself…

Hank Hawley.
Army ace. Airmail daredevil.
And a Mile-High Madman with enough ghosts to ground an entire squadron.

Hank doesn’t need distractions—especially not a spoiled, sharp-tongued socialite with eyes full of fire and a hunger for the clouds. But Rory is nothing like he expected. She’s brave. Fierce. Lonely. And when she looks at him, he starts to believe there might be more to life than just staying alive.

Their connection is instant. Their chemistry is explosive. But when Rory’s father disowns her and danger shadows Hank’s every flight, loving him might cost Rory everything—her fortune, her freedom, even her life. And Hank knows too well that the sky doesn’t spare the things he cares about.

In a world built on risk, passion becomes the most dangerous dare of all… and the only one worth taking.

Welcome to Mile-High Madmen—where every pilot is a legend, every kiss is a free fall, and love always flies into the storm.

Leslie Vollard delivers a sweeping Jazz Age romance filled with danger, heart, and breathtaking passion. Perfect for fans of Beatriz Williams, Julie Klassen, and high-drama historical love stories, this tale of daring dreams and healing hearts proves that sometimes love soars where courage begins.

We have two people who not only should never have met but a future is as far away as the sky! But is it when it really love.
We have Miss Aurora Belmont heiress and socialite. She’s beautiful intelligent and starved for a real connection and she has made some questionable choices!
Her father’s answer is to marry her off to a senator who is very clear he’s being paid to do so!
An introduction to his mistress is also part of the deal!
He is an absolute jerk! Aurora aka Rory meets an honest honorable man in the form of Lieutenant Hank Hawley.
They resolve they are from different worlds plus Rory is set to be engaged.
But their attraction is like two magnets! Hank is determined to be honorable but Rory won’t stop her pursuit! Not that Hank is crazy about her but he is resolved not to take the ultimate step.
But the more Rory learns about her fiancé she just can’t go through with it! She’s threatened with being disowned and that is still not enough to deter her after his last betrayal!
Rory knows that her father and society won’t approve but should it cost Hank his life!
Hank is a true book boyfriend and there is nonstop action! The characters are real, flawed and utterly adorable! Bravo well done!.

Wings of Defiance
This is a sweeping Jazz Age romance where a scandalous heiress and a daredevil pilot collide in a world that doesn’t make room for either of them.
Rory Belmont is everything society loves to judge—wealthy, reckless, and labeled scandalous by the press. She’s also engaged to a powerful senator she doesn’t love, while her father makes it clear she’ll be cut off if she walks away. Hank Hawley, an Army ace turned airmail pilot, is carrying his own weight of loss and danger every time he takes to the skies. When Rory slips away from her engagement party and ends up in the cockpit of his plane, the connection between them is instant—and impossible to ignore.
Set against the backdrop of 1918, when flight was still new and dangerous and the world was shifting after the First World War, the story leans into both the thrill and the risk of that era. The stakes aren’t just personal; they’re social and political too. Defying a senator with influence comes with consequences, and Rory and Hank quickly find themselves caught in more than just their own choices.
What stands out is the sense of momentum—romance and danger unfolding at the same speed as a plane cutting through uncertain skies. I enjoyed watching their connection build against so many pressures, and I’m curious to see where the series goes next.

Love in the air

Sorry about the punny title I couldn’t help myself lol. This is a sweet and spicy romance between two daring people. Rory is an heiress who’s been held in a guided cage her whole life. She is trapped by a man who only cares for her father’s money and will do anything to get it starting by marrying her. Hank a Lieutenant in the army is back from the front and part of the new air mail service flying mail along the east coast. A chance meeting changes both their lives forever no we get to see a wonderful and unconventional (for the times) love story unfold. I loved these two and think they’re absolutely perfect for each other. The world building is very well done, America at the end of the First World War comes alive. I like the blend of real and fictional characters. While daring is a tame word imo for what these pilots signed up for (I’d say insane but that’s just me) it certainly made for some exciting scenes. I just really enjoyed these two and story from start to finish! I eagerly await the next book in the series!!

I love why the author started this series - she was fascinated by the air mail pilots in the early 1900’s. She has a strong start with this one.

Rory was born into a rich, powerful family. She has had multiple advantages but also has found some ways to rebel, such as advocating for the women’s vote. She is fascinated by airplanes and the pilots that fly them.

Hank is an air mail pilot who does not see himself settling down while he regularly risks his life. But meeting Rory changes something for him.

Because of their different classes, there are definite obstacles. It is an enjoyable read finding their way to a HEA.

I could not put this wild love story down! Heiress Aurora 'Rory' Belmont and Army Ace and Air Mail pilot Hank Hawley are from to totally different worlds. She’s wild, rich, and dangerous and he’s steadfast, career oriented and of course beneath her family status, plus, her father already has her engaged to a money grabbing two timer and will disown her if she doesn’t marry him. But, Rory and Hank’s accidental meeting and their shared love of aviation just might bring them together.
What happens next is what happens next is what makes this an exciting love story and I cannot wait to read the next story in this new series. Leslie VOLLARD is a new Author for me. I’m so glad I found her on BookSprout and I’m gladly volunteering to give this review.

I enjoyed this book, although the beginning was a bit slow for me. Once things got rolling it was a wonderful book. Two people from completely different worlds, heiress Aurora 'Rory' Belmont and Army Ace and Air Mail pilot Hank Hawley. Their shared love of aviation brought them together, and their tenacity kept them together.

Love this time period when advances in so many things were almost daily occurrences. Suffragettes, air travel, old money vying with new money, and changing values. It must have been an exciting time to be alive!

Since this is the beginning of a new series, Mile-High Madmen, I can't wait to see what this author has in store for us!

Air Affair (Mile-High Madmen Book 1) by Leslie Vollard is not only the beginning of a new series by this author it is also the first book I have read written by her. Rory Belmont is the thrill-seeking heiress who meets an airmail instructor, Hank Hawley. Taking place in 1918, war left its mark on Hank. Strong chemistry from the first meeting, you would think one who loves planes and one who loves flying should be a match in heaven, but it is not so. Family disapproval and discord along with danger plague the couple so that a happy ending is not a sure thing for most of the story. A wonderful sense of time and place with two characters who are trying to find their way in a changing world.

I loved this book so much. Hank and Rory's passion for flying and life are perfection. I grew up with Dad who was a pilot and was so excited to find a historical romance with aviation in it. It isn't very common. So good!

I can't imagine flying in a plane in 1918. It seems like you'd be lucky if you managed to take off safely, fly without running out of gas, and land without the engines stalling. Just unbelievable!! Every time Hank would fly another job, it would give me sweaty pits.

Rory is a rich socialite who's a Senator's daughter and Hank is a pilot for the air mail. They fall in love, and at first they try to hide it because her father will disown her. They meet in secret. I really felt for them because the odds of them getting a HEA together were very slim. They were on complete opposite ends of society. Top notch yearning that this might be the last time they're together. Trying to find any kind of plan to be together. Very compatible together and very hot. Thankfully, they find a way, because this is romance, baby. Good job, great book!!

I've looked at the next book and I'm glad of who the next couple is going to be!
Thank you to Leslie Vollard, Booksprout and Oliver Heber for the copy of this book. Opinions are my own.
