I recently met Gisela Hausmann in an author group, where she was sharing tips on how to get more reviews for books. Of course, once everyone realized that she is a top Amazon reviewer, the thread exploded into a huge conversation about all aspects of reviews--everything from how to write a good review to how to authentically and properly approach top reviewers and bloggers about a book. It was obvious she knew what she was talking about, so I hopped over to Amazon and purchased her book on the spot to learn more.
Not only was this book packed with useful tips, it was short and direct--my kind of read. I just love it when authors get straight to the point. Gisela covered several topics that I had never even heard of. Thankfully, I haven't committed all of the crimes listed in there, but I definitely gained a great deal of knowledge about the review process.
It would have been great to see more in-depth information about the process of acquiring 'verified purchase' reviews concerning the Kindle Unlimited program, being a Prime member, and receiving a loan or gifted copy of a book, but perhaps that's a book all its own.
I highly recommend this book to any author who would like to know how to become a top Amazon reviewer or would simply like to increase his/her number of reviews.

As an author and a reviewer I found this book to be very helpful. As we know in the Indie world, reviewers are a must. Gisela was able to answer a lot of questions that most of us have, on top of giving sound advice that will work and help for us to get the reviewers we need. Very good book and I recommend it highly to all authors.

With millions of books on the market at any given moment, the independent author faces what seems an insurmountable hurdle: How do I attract enough attention to sell more copies of my own opus. More specifically, how do I get more readers to post reviews? (Not purely a rhetorical question. My own novel has been on the market for two months but so far has only a half dozen reviews, so I crave attention like a fourth grader who’s brought a surprise for Show & Tell.)
Gisela Hausman, herself a Top Amazon Reviewer, provides an insider’s line of sight to the ever-changing rules and trends in online book reviews. For instance, this fourth edition of Naked Truths About Getting Book Reviews takes note of the recent crackdown on non-“verified” reviews. Amazon lists a review as verified if the reviewer purchased the book from Amazon and has spent at least $50 on Amazon products; on the other hand, people who write a favorable review in exchange for receiving the book free or as a swap of reviews between two authors, may see their reviews deleted.
Hausman explores a number of strategies to attract reviewers, warning that the often-used tactic of offering the book for free is usually not enough to make any difference, especially to the high-volume reviewers. More than 60,000 free books are available on Amazon every day.
“Newbie authors probably can’t even imagine what it was like for me receiving between five and ten unsolicited ebooks per week,” she writes. “It’s like people inviting themselves to stay at your house or storing stuff in your garage.”
Despite the challenges, authors can separate themselves from the pack and score meaningful reviews, and Hausman provides a number of practical tips. I hope to follow her advice to good results. To quote Chuck Berry, “Maybe someday your name will be in lights…”

I beg other authors not to hold it against me for reading and reviewing NAKED TRUTHS About Getting Book Reviews 2018 by Gisela Hausmann ahead of the schedule and before theirs. This book came at the right moment to my attention, when I was on the mission of seeking and hunting new reviews for A World Without Color, the true story of the last three days I spent with my cat, and I was too curious and hungry for good advice. And I got it!
It's not that I didn't ask around and collected information on what is allowed and what is not allowed when asking for a review and posting my own reviews on Amazon before I read this book. I did it by the book, not breaking any rules, which came as a relief.
NAKED TRUTHS About Getting Book Reviews 2018, Gisela Hausmann reminded me of things I could have done better, more thoughtful and... more refined. As a "self-publishing industry veteran, an email evangelist and a top reviewer," as her Goodreads profile says, in her 86 pages long fourth edition (earlier editions were 2015, 2016 and 2017), she offers us her insight and knowledge on how to better understand Amazon's review platform and introduces us to 10 different kinds of reviews.
Spending years in collecting information and studying the shape-shifting of the patterns of Amazon's behavior to its readers and authors and as a response to the actions of its readers and authors, the Amazon top reviewer Gisela Hausmann delivered us a short but well-informed handbook of Amazon dos and don'ts.
I love this book. I love its simplicity of writing and the clarity of advice and examples Hausmann uses to tell us what we should do to get more reviews for our precious books. Like a good teacher or a caring parent she explains her every claim so everyone can understand it. Don't touch a heated oven or you might get burned, don't ride your bicycle over the red light or you might get hit by a car. Reward your teachers with a smile and thank you for the knowledge they gave you because they are also humans and kind words open many doors.
Apart from stating the rules in NAKED TRUTHS About Getting Book Reviews 2018 we should follow, should we want to make our books successful, Hausmann tells us probably the biggest secret of all on how to get desired reviews. I am sure we all know that secret on some basic, primal level, but we somehow forgot it in our rush to count our daily written words, haste to build our launch team or finish the formatting before we catch the self-imposed publishing deadline.
Every successful relationship is built individually, on respect and personal level, with just the right emotion and enough passion to spark it into existence. The same applies to our books and their reviewers, to us and how we treat them.
For further information please read the book.

I received a paperback copy of "NAKED TRUTHS About Getting Book Reviews" by Gisela Hausmann (Author), Divya Lavanya (Editor) in a recent contest I won. Thank you Gisela Hausmann.
This book is packed with tons of information on how to get reviews. I can see one owning the physical copy along with the kindle copy as it has sites to look into for further reading and learning.
I did learn more ways to seek reviews and what not to do. Example, not picking someone outside their genre. Adding reviews to Goodreads helps with more exposure.
I highly recommend this book for all authors.

This book gave me some very good pointers, not only about where to garner reviews but also on what constitutes a 'good' or 'bad' review.
I would have liked if it had been a tad longer, but even in its short form it makes a number of excellent points. It gives examples of how not to word review requests and elaborates how to do it better. Some of the things mentioned had never occurred to me before, so it was very helpful.

My approach to getting reviews is quite simple: I discuss my books on my blog, and run a few giveaways in the hope that people will read and review my work. Through networking, I'm in the happy position to have gathered over 300 reviews of my books. So, I thought I knew what I was doing.
I recently posted an article on my blog on this very issue. Upon reading it, Gisella Hausmann kindly offered me a free copy in exchange for an honest review. I thought I'd learned the tricks of the trade, but she managed to teach me a few new things.
Gisela's approach is much more proactive than the one I described above. Indeed, she describes my approach as only the second of four steps. Simplifying her ideas somewhat, the first step is asking your friends and relatives; second step is asking bloggers; third step is asking Amazon top reviewers and fourth step is asking print magazine editors. That's how you get readers worldwide to read your work.
She then offers practical advice on how to achieve all this, from writing a simple query email (she's a mistress of the form) to avoid common pitfalls such as paying for reviews or reacting to negative ones.
The only passage I disagreed with concerned her advice against sending people your second book once they've reviewed your first one: when someone has sent me their first book and I've reviewed it, I usually welcome their second one, especially if it's part of a series.
Still, I feel like her book has put me back on track with ideas on how to play a more proactive role in gathering reviews. Plus, it offers a road into getting readers worldwide tor read my book. As such, I found it particularly useful read for any author, Indie or not.

Every time I read a book that explicitly or implicitly suggests a how-to quick fix, I am in a state of mild excitement. I begin to expect suggestions that will help me work miracles. It seems to be a habit I can’t cure myself of.
Gisela’s Hausmann’s Naked Truths about Getting Book Reviews did not quite give me tips on working miracles, but did impart a lot of common sense on how to adopt a sensible strategy to get reviews for your book and on how to deal with them—good or bad—when you do get them.
What I liked in particular are her suggestions for getting readers to submit reviews and for approaching other potential reviewers, including top-ranked reviewers, without rubbing them the wrong way. Hausmann has sensible suggestions for how to spot and avoid fake and “orchestrated” reviews.
She has some unexpected insights to throw on low-ranked (one star, two starts) reviews and how they can actually benefit the author.
I highlighted her suggestions on how best to incorporate the book reviews you receive into your blog. I will be going back to them in due course.
As someone who is hoping to gets tons of glowing reviews one day for my own publications, I finished Hausmann’s book wiser than when I started it. I only wish she had concentrated a little on answering the questions (may be a survey to get these questions?) of fiction writers; she primarily appears to be a non-fiction writer herself, and her book, without being blatant, is focused more on that category of author.

Flummoxed by the whole getting-reviews-process, I purchased Gisela Hausmann’s book hoping to learn the "Naked Truths." Wow! I read her book as a page-turner, in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. I had known reviews were important. But as someone who recently transitioned from academic writing and non-fiction psychology to fiction, I had no idea how important reviews were for getting my fiction books out to the right readers, or the importance of getting the 'right reviews.' Not only does she go through the myths and madness of getting reviews, imparting information on strategic methods to approach reviewers, she tells us what types of reviews are most helpful. Also useful, was her guidance surrounding getting reviews before a book is launched.
Her writing is also engaging, making an otherwise how-to-style book, a delight to read. I even laughed a few times as she revealed the somewhat crazy process writers, like myself, must go through to get these reviews. But she DOES tell us everything we need to know. I finished this book with a much clearer vision of what needs to be done and, her words have inspired a reticent-me to do it! This is a must read for all writers, especially ones new to the daunting business side of writing.

One of my writing friends blogged about this book, inspiring me to obtain a copy. I'm glad I did. This is a straightforward manual designed to explain all that writers, and reviewers, need to know about Amazon reviews.
The author is one of the top Amazon reviewers, so she understands the needs and concerns of such people. She explains why reviews are important, how to determine which reviews will do most good, and most harm, to your precious book, and how to go about engaging the attention of the top reviewers. Make no mistake, the process is lengthy, demanding and difficult. But Gisela gives the reader the necessary tools and the information required to use them effectively.
It's a short read and a book that is best kept available during any attempt to put her advice into practice. I intend to follow her advice over the next few days and weeks and will return to the book from time to time in the future. Definitely a well spent couple of quid.

A FIVE STAR BOOK! Gisela will show you how to write, and receive reviews.
I posted a note on a FB authors' group page begging for help on how to navigate the review world. Gisela Hausmann took the time to drop me a FB message after reading my call for help and told me the answers were in her book! I'm halfway through and wanted to take a quick moment to let you know how I feel now that I've found the answers to my questions.
Gisela makes it simple: Do this, do that, and here are the results!
Ms. Hausmann also says authors have the advantage when marketing our work: we know how to write! Now isn't that a true statement.
I laughed out loud when she listed the things NOT to say when writing a review. I've been guilty of all of them!
Thanks Gisela Hausmann.

Gisela Hausman clarifies what steps need to be taken in order to reach that Holy Grail that every author seeks ... the elusive Goodreads/Amazon Book Review! Her clear and concise tutorial on how to elicit book reviews is exactly what experienced and inexperienced authors alike need to encourage their readers to not only submit a review but write one that peaks the interest of potential new readers. As an Indie author who just spent more than a year running in circles trying to obtain reviews from even my best fans, I can vouch for Hausman's expertise since, after reading this book and taking her recommendations to heart, I garnered 3 book reviews in a single week (two from the US & one on Amazon UK)! I'm more than happy to provide one here!

As I read this book, I thought about the woman who had 12 reviews, but it ended up being a best seller. Some people do not leave reviews because they don't know what to write, as mentioned in the book, or they are busy, or they may not see the importance. However, for the unknown author, reviews are a benefit.
The points that I took away were reviewing is strategic, essential, and there are various approaches that can help you attain them. This book has a lot of information, but the author kept it interesting. It was a fast read, and I recommend it to authors and reviewers. It definitely gave me a different perspective about reviewing.

I found Naked Truths About Getting Book Reviews by Gisela Hausmann to be an interesting, helpful book to read. I like the way she writes, in a clear, direct, friendly way. Her short book will interest authors, for it makes it clear why reviews are important. It will also interest readers, for it tells them why reviews are important for readers and authors. As I have self published one book and I am about to publish another, I found this book just what I needed to read at the moment. I like the wise advice she gives on book reviews and the need for them and felt grateful for her list of valuable web site addresses. Hers is a good book, well worth reading, for both authors and readers.

A pot of gold!
I found a pot of gold when I bought Gisela Hausmann’s “Naked Truth About Getting Book Reviews the other day. I bought it because I needed to educate myself about writing reviews, but I got a lot more out of that book than I’d hoped for. I read it twice. Made copious notes the second time, and know they’ll come in handy at some point in the near future. I love her advice on how to approach top reviewers. I realize I have a lot of ground to cover before I start doing that, but with the links she provided, and with her special advise on how to proceed before approaching them, the prospect doesn’t feel quite as daunting any longer. What a gem of a book!

As a first-time, recent, self-published author, I have struggled with many issues inherent to book publishing, including marketing, publicizing, and seeking reviews for my book. It has been a struggle that has often left me discouraged and disheartened. Reading this book by Gisela Hausmann has given me new tools to use such as a fresh perspective, new ideas, and a renewed determination to position my book to attract and engage new readers, and ideally, to motivate them to write a helpful review of my book. Thank you, Gisela!

This was a very informative book. Especially useful for me was Ms. Hausmann's explanation of the progression from reviews from friends and fans up to the top ten reviewers.

Great insights
I figured this book would rehash material I already know. However it had good information that I could use right away. It had good examples and good resources.

Before you peep beneath the cover of this book, let me tell you about the only important thing that it doesn't tell you... make sure you have a pen and paper next to you while you read. In fact, take that paper, scrumple it up and throw it away and replace it with a notebook. You see, this book is so full to bursting with good ideas that you're going to have lots of to-do lists by the time you're done.
If you're an author, then reviews are crucial. This book gives a no-nonsense guide to going about the process of getting those reviews.
It covers:
☑ How to find Amazon's top reviewers.
☑ Ways to approach reviewers.
☑ Mistakes made by authors in approaching reviewers.
☑ Ways you can search for other reviewers - on the likes of Goodreads or finding book bloggers.
☑ How to approach newspapers and other traditional publications.
☑ The truth behind some of those rumours about ways in which Amazon disqualifies reviews.
☑ Advice you can give to those who might ask what to include in a review because they haven't written one in a while.
The last point is particularly useful. There are so many different stories doing the rounds in author groups about different myths to do with reviewing that it is incredibly helpful to get some straight answers from an authoritative source of someone who has been there and done it.
There's also some unexpected information - such as it being useful for authors who receive a review to go to Amazon and mark it as helpful. I'd heard stories on some author groups saying you shouldn't connect in any way with a reviewer, but it makes sense that marking a review as helpful is an acknowledgement by the author in the time and effort someone has taken to write a review.
All the information is presented clearly and methodically, and by the time you're done, you'll have that to-do list fully loaded up. Now, to see if I can make the most of what I've learned from this and see if I can drum up a few more reviews for my own books!
There are so many different stories doing the rounds in author groups about different myths to do with reviewing that it is incredibly helpful to get some straight answers from an authoritative source of someone who has been there and done it.

here is my video review of this book:

√ I was Tricked into Reviewing this Book!
As shown in this video, NAKED TRUTHS ABOUT GETTING BOOK REVIEWS contains LOTS of great ideas on marketing your book. In fact, the author used one of her ideas on ME! On describing how to get reviewers to read your book, the author claims that, "Some reviewers can even be charmed into reading a book from a genre they typically do not read, merely because the book's author made a convincing case..."
Now wait just a minute! We reviewers have standards--we can't just be "charmed" into reviewing a book, you know!
My favorite chapter, however, is the one explaining how to contact "Top Reviewers." In fact, the email I received from the author looks a LOT like the suggested email in this chapter! I have been outwitted by Gisela!
The most interesting point in this book concerns "1-Star" reviews. Gisela points out that for certain controversial works, a 1-star review can actually HELP you sell more copies. The author cites statistics on reviews she has written herself, and how many favorable votes she has received on these reviews.
All in all, I found this book a lot of fun to read. It has lots of fun ideas that really aren't very hard to implement. So, if you want to understand the importance of reviews, and how to get lots of well-written reviews for your work, check out NAKED TRUTHS ABOUT GETTING BOOK REVIEWS. It is indeed critical, as Gisela notes, to get a good number of solid reviews for your book.
Review copy of NAKED TRUTHS provided by author for impartial review. I do not know the author, and did not receive any compensation for this review. Heck, she was too cheap to even send me a hard copy.

Ms. Hausmann's book is very informative and gives authors a proper roadmap into the best way to not only get reviews, but legitimate ones that will attract customers. For authors, informational works like this are a must have on their Kindles in this ever growing field we've chosen to be a part of.

This is the book that many highly ranked reviewers wish they wrote and that all will want authors to read before pursuing the wild goose of getting their books reviewed by someone who really counts. As was the case in her other books that have “Naked” in the title, Hausmann is using the word to mean “untarnished” or “pure” rather than “without clothing.”
As a highly ranked reviewer, Hausmann has experienced what all top ranked reviewers do, receiving many emails from authors wanting their book reviewed and finding a wide variation in the quality. As she points out, some of them are so bad you would be astonished if you were to discover that their book was actually well written, worth reading and even recommending. Hausmann’s advice is also naked in the same sense, there is no fluff, no hype and no sentence is wasted or unnecessary.
As a highly ranked reviewer myself, I am both pleased and disquieted by the thought that authors will read this book before sending me an email request. The current situation is that a significant percentage of such requests can be dismissed after reading one or two sentences, reducing the amount of time needed to filter. An immediate consequence of authors reading this book, and they really should, will be that it will get much more difficult to select the books to review.
Hausmann mentions that she attended boxing matches while in Las Vegas, so I will close with a sports analogy that she is familiar with. She has scored an uncontested and undisputed knockout.
This book was made available for free for review purposes and this review appears on Amazon.

Gisela Hausmann sure knows what works and what does not when trying to get more reviews for your book. She is not only a highly ranked reviewer but also a bestseller author, so hear her out, learn and absorb the knowledge and advices she generously gives you. It is so worth it!
In my opinion you can’t develop as an author if you ignore the advices of a more experienced person just because she/he didn’t say or write about the things you think are right. I think bypassing something that could really take you forward is not a wise move.
Naked Truths About Getting Book Reviews is full of helpful information. Who to ask and when. Why top reviewers are a wise choice and why we shouldn’t hide under the rock if we’ll get a not so great review (read 1-2 star review that basically says nothing about our book but more about the reader).
This book is very systematic, so it’s easy to navigate back and forth or in my case check out the bookmarked pages and read them again and again. Thank God there is no limit of how many pages you can bookmark in Kindle! There are excellent advices about the etiquette between the reviewer and the author. Tips of what to do and what is an absolute no no. I can’t imagine anyone to fail if they follow these advices!
This is a fast read, but every word is worth a bucket full of gold!

Taming the chaos
As every writer discovers, you can’t sell a lot of books without a lot of reviews. Without them, the best book in the world will go unnoticed among the millions of self-published and traditionally published books now competing for the attention of readers. Fewer and fewer newspapers review books these days, forcing authors to rely heavily on online customer reviews.
Author and Amazon reviewer Gisela Hausmann’s book Naked Truths About Getting Book Reviews takes a lot of the chaos out of the search for reviews. It provides step-by-step methods authors can put to use even prior to publication. Hausmann warns authors that a slew of tiny, cliché-filled five-star reviews obviously written by friends can be far less effective than a negative one-star review. She goes on to show authors how to use readers’ groups and book blog sites to generate interest and reviews. Finally, using her experience as an Amazon reviewer, she provides a strategy for approaching the thousands of Amazon reviewers. To her credit she says there is no magic to it, just a lot of painstaking, methodical work. However, with her roadmap in hand, an author will likely find it easier to stay the course.

I can’t remember how I came across Gisela Hausmann’s blog. Obviously I was searching for a way forward on the dreaded book promotion front. I was struck by the NAKED TRUTH titles and Gisela’s straightforward approach, yet still hesitant about buying the book. As a writer, you come across so many ‘How To’ books, your mind just boggles, to say little of your eyes. Mostly they are great tomes you can’t possibly imagine finding time to read in between juggling writing, reading, promotion... Oh, yes, and family and work… But then, I thought, Naked Truth? Maybe, just maybe, this author won’t beat about the bush. She doesn’t. NAKED TRUTH About Getting Book Reviews is easy to read, simply outlines the dos and don’ts and, most importantly, it’s concise enough to make you want to read. Knowing I can be guilty of being a little verbose, I was also tempted to buy NAKED WORDS: The Effective 157-Word Email. Later that day I sent off a request for a review to another reviewer I'd been meaning to contact for some time. The reviewer got back immediately, enthusiastically, and agreed. In my mind, that makes my purchases one-hundred percent worthwhile.

This book has it all. Ms. Hausmann has taken her considerable, successful experience as both an author and reviewer, and given us the value of her insights for amassing more reviews for our books. I didn't previously understand the importance of pursuing top-ranked reviewers as reviewers of my books. She gave pertinent insight into the approach and the methods, and explained the etiquette involved. I have been reluctant to "impose" on top reviewers who already get numerous requests. Ms. Hausmann has shown me how to get past that conception, and to understand that a non-answer, or a "no," is yet just one more hurdle in this self-publishing business. If you don't ask, top reviewers certainly won't be reviewing the book. If you do, you may be ignored or told no, but it is worth the effort. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I plan to put Ms. Hausmann's simple and effective strategies into play. I really like that she was able to impart so much information in a relatively short book. I've bookmarked pages that were particularly pertinent, and I anticipate using NAKED TRUTHS About Getting Book Reviews as a "how to" book to be referred to time and again.

Essential reading for Indie authors!
If, like me, you are an indie author who has written a book that you are passionate about the next challenge is getting it seen, let’s face it a book that isn’t read is like an unborn child. After trying traditional routes of sending my book out to newspapers and critics I eventually started looking elsewhere and stumbled upon Gisela and “Naked Truths About Getting Book Reviews”.
The book is packed with no-nonsense advice on how to get reviews from the people that really matter. You may already be using some of the methods described but even within them you will find useful tips on how to get better quality reviews, I particularly liked the a), b), c) questions for potential reviewers. Gisela also outlines how to approach reviewers from their perspective and word/structure your appeals.
There are useful links to blogger lists and the like that are essential tools for the indie author in today’s market. In short, if you are serious about getting your book seen then, to coin a much over-used phrase, this is a ‘must read’.

Having come to saturation point in asking for reviews, I decided to buy this book. To be honest, I thought it was going to be yet another of those self-help books that would end up in my closet along with a tower of others. I was wrong. This is a desk-keeper, a dictionary of sorts. So I’ll clear out that closet and use this one instead.
There’s no fluff in Hausmann’s writing. Presented in a chatty style, she makes you feel included and, most importantly, empowered. She recommends a wealth of different ways to request reviews, provides links to helpful websites and recommends a bunch of other ideas and resources you never knew existed. There is clearly a right way to ask for reviews (and a wrong way) and in Michael Caine’s famous words ‘not a lot of people know that.’
What I really liked about this book and how it was rendered was Hausmann’s passion. She’s smart, ingenious and genuinely cares about her readers. My only regret was not having found this book sooner. Really looking forward to reading some of her other Naked Truth books.

I bought this book to read over the weekend. As a new author I’m very concerned about book reviews so I ended up taking a quick look at the book, and I ended up reading the entire book in one sitting.
Gisela Haufmann is a top reviewer with Amazon. That makes the information in this book a bit more valuable than what you might find elsewhere.
There’s a lot of information in this book that will be of interest to you if you are an author. Gisela covers things like:
• How to ask for reviews
• What you should not ask for
• Should you get reviews from friends and family
• How to deal with negative reviews
• Should you be concerned about low ratings (3 star etc.)
• The three biggest mistakes made by authors
You can waste a lot of time trying to get information and the results may or may not be accurate. Gisela’s book will tell you what you need to know about book reviews without a lot of extra fluff.
