Nick
I've always been the playboy of my friend group. The guy who's never been without a boyfriend or girlfriend or at least a regular hookup since high school. But lately, casual isn't doing it for me. It's a fact that becomes abundantly clear when I can't get it up for a hot guy I met at a coffeeshop and invited back to my place. He's gracious and leaves without making it a big deal. Even offers me a raincheck if I want. Which I don't. When I hear the police sirens about a half hour after he left, I don't think anything of it except to wonder if they can find my missing libido.

Aaron
After my brother, Zack, is found in an alley, everything becomes about finding his killer. Unfortunately, neither the police nor my family have any idea what Zack was doing in that part of San Francisco. I mean, I have a suspicion, but with Zack's phone missing, the police don't know where to look. At a loss about what to do but needing to do something, Zack's best friend and I start handing out flyers trying to find someone who saw Zack or knew where he'd been. It's a long shot, but miraculously, someone calls to say he might have been the last person to see Zack alive.

Meeting under the most unlikeliest of circumstances, Nick and Aaron find a connection neither of them anticipated. A connection that leads them into each others arms and each others hearts.

This is a strangers to more murder mystery romance, featuring Nick and Aaron, and is book two in the Legal Briefs Novella series.

Nick begins to question his casual lifestyle after a failed hookup, only to realise he may have been the last person to see a murder victim alive. As Aaron searches for answers about his brother’s death, their paths cross and an unexpected attraction begins.

This is an emotional read with a strong hurt/comfort feel. The story combines a murder mystery with a developing romance between Nick and Aaron and we get to see them be there for each other. It was a great read.

Things to expect in this book are:
Book 2 in series
Novella
MM romance
Opposites attract
Strangers to more
Murder mystery / suspense
Hurt/comfort
Grief and healing
Emotional awakening
Dates
Buys him flowers
Spicy times
Found family

ETA- I finished. No rating change.

DNF @80%

I’ve been reading Marie since her very first novella. I did discover over time that I prefer her novellas over her full length novels, and the first of this series is one of my absolute favorites.

Don’t expect that vibe here.

*spoilers*

Which is fine but if you start a book with a murder, that’s intense so feelings need to be intense and I felt nothing. Aaron initial on page grief was bizarre. And I felt no feelings between him and Nick at all. No build up. Something fundamental was missing in the relationship development which made me just stop reading because I didn’t care. I may finish so I can get The Whodunit but I don’t care about the couple. Super bummed.

I really liked the first book in this series, so I was excited to pick up this one. While it was cute enough, I don't think it really matched the vibes of the first book and didn't really work as well for me.

Nick and Aaron have a very unique meeting--Aaron's brother has been murdered, and Nick may have been the last one to see him alive (other than the murderer). Their lives keep intersecting with each other as they try to come to terms with what happened, but are they willing to take a chance on each other?

I think the ultimate thing this book needed was more space to actually flesh out the characters and the situation. While the premise is definitely intriguing--a failed hookup leading to the right guy for you--the execution didn't quite work. We don't have enough time with the characters to really get invested, especially since a decent amount of space also needs to be given to the murder. Ultimately, none of these things really got enough space, and it just felt kind of thin. I think as a full-length book this could have been a really good story, but that the overall premise wasn't really the right thing for a novella.

I liked the main characters, and seeing them get together was satisfying, but I didn't feel much of a connection to either of them, and didn't really get why they should be together. However, the side characters, some of which I liked in the first book, were kind of flat and one-note in this one. Nick's friends basically exist in this book just to remind us that he is a guy who likes to hook up and doesn't want to settle down, which...at some point, it just was mean. They acted like he couldn't change at all from the guy they met in college or whatever, which irritated me greatly. As for Kit....I do not have enough space to get into Kit.

As for the murder subplot, I feel like it also needed more time to really work. It both hangs over the entire story and also isn't really addressed enough (or maybe just not handled properly) to give much satisfaction by the end.

I didn't really know how to handle rating this book, since while it didn't work well for me, there also wasn't much out and out wrong with it. It just...didn't land with me. It definitely needed more pages to make the premise work.

Free ARC provided by Gay Romance Reviews. This is my honest review.

Another novella from this series by Marie Sinclair. I like this series so far and look forward to the next installment.

This story belongs to Nick whom we met in book 1 as one of Tyler’s friends, and Aaron. Nick attempts a hook up with Zack who is Aaron’s brother but fails to…ahem….rise to the occasion. Zack leaves but doesn’t make it home. Nick meets Aaron when Aaron is in his neighbourhood putting up flyers and looking for info on his brother.

There’s an attraction and they bond over the deceased.

I have issues now.

1) It’s not long enough. This kind of set up really needs to be a full length novel to develop properly.

2) WTF, Kit. Kit is Zack and Aaron’s bff. He’s clearly self medicating with alcohol and drugs and Nick makes sure he gets home safe one night and takes care of him.

You’d think Kit would appreciate that. Yeah no. Instead he tries to start shit about Aaron and Nick dating on the day Nick meets Aaron’s parents in their home. There’s never a resolution though. Never and explanation. Kit continues to hang out with the larger group. How does that work?

3) Who killed Zack? Why did that person kill Zack? Zack’s death in an alley is kind of big deal. Book should have been longer to flesh that out.

4) Can the friend group stop being judgy judgy about hook up king Nick? He’s your friend. If you don’t approve of his lifestyle choices which aren’t yours to judge anyway, let the man find better friends.

HFN ending, no break up, good spice.

Nick has a hookup that doesn’t go well, he’s just not into it. He’s frustrated and isn’t sure what’s wrong with him. Then he learns his hookup was killed moments after he left and feels really guilty. He gets in touch with Aaron, who’s the brother of the deceased, and tells him about seeing Zach.

Aaron and his family have been searching for clues about Zach’s death for weeks, so the information from Nick is helpful. He’s cleared of any wrongdoing because a camera picked up Zach after he left Nick’s place.

Nick and Aaron keep thinking about each other, but Aaron’s friend Kit doesn’t like Nick, even though he and his friends look after Kit when he drinks too much and almost gets in trouble. Aaron and Nick finally admit their interest and go on a date.

Their feelings go deeper than hooking up, and for Aaron, who’s demi, it’s a chance for something to grow because Nick gives him time to get to know him. Nick gets over his slump by realizing hookups weren’t enough and he wanted something real, which is happening with Aaron.

I like these characters who have a meet macabre instead of a meet cute, but they both seem to find what they need in each other. Novellas are frustratingly short for me, but this one was well paced and didn’t scream instalove, though it was faster than I prefer. Ty’s story piqued my curiosity so that one’s next.

I received this ARC for free and am pleased to write my honest review of it with appreciation.

Next of Kin is Book Two in the series Legal Briefs. Ty and Cam from book One are in this one as well and it is great to see how they are doing. Next of Kin focusses on Nick, the playboy of the group. He always has a boyfriend or a girlfriend or maybe just a hookup. His latest hookup did not go as planned when he had performance issues. Maybe casual is no longer his thing. He thinks nothing of the police lights and siren about a half hour later.

Aaron cannot believe that his brother, Zack, was found murdered in an alley. The case is quickly going cold when Aaron and Zack’s best friend Kit decide to hand out flyers. Nick recognizes him as his hookup and decides to talk to Aaron about what he knows. He was probably the last one to see him. When the two meet they feel a connection but the timing is just not right.

It is sad when a life is lost at such a young age. Zack had so much living left to do. Processing the grief is difficult for everyone who is touched by the murder. They all handle it differently by trying to think about what they could have done to prevent this tragedy. Nick and Aaron had their issues with it but they found each other to help cope. Nick and Aaron were perfect together. Their love grew out of a need. I was disappointed in the end and the resolution of the murder. It needed more. All-in-all, this was a fantastic story and worth your time.

Just okay, the first one was way better.

My review

🌕🌕🌖

I read the previous book, and loved it, but this one left much to be desired. It started really good, strong, and fascinating, but it flopped in the middle, with a nick talking about wanting to change, wanting to do things differently, and turning around and doing things the same way. Yes, there are some differences, but not that many. And there are some punk moves that should endear him to the reader, but actually made me dislike him. Yes, telling Aaron he can meet someone he admires is great, but leaving his friends after their big announcement, with nothing to say… punk moves. Yes, he’s supposed to be taking care of Aaron, but at least say something! That flimsy excuse, compounded with the facade he presents to his friends was not looking good. And Kit was nasty, I understand being hurt, but man… I guess I enjoyed the cozy vibes of the previous book too much, and this was such a stark difference, that it left me reeling. But the end was really good, it tied up some ends without delving too deep into the trial and investigation, and focused on the relationship and healing, so it made up for the weird middle. I like this author, and I’ll read more by them, and hopefully, we get Kit’s healing book next!

Full disclosure - I saw the blurb for Next of Kin before Voir Dear and really wanted to read it but decided to start with Voir dear, and ultimately I’m really glad I did. This is Nick’s book - we were introduced in the first one. For such a close knit friend group overall we really didn’t get to see more depth in his relationship with the others than we saw in the previous book, and I was hoping for a little bit more to round out the character. Right now it seems like he’s pretty much only there as someone to bet on going home with someone else. I didn’t really mind the fact that Aaron is Zach’s brother and the reason Nick and Aaron meet is because Nick was the last to see Zach alive. I was, though, hoping for just a bit more about Zach’s death. The death feels like an afterthought in the book, just a random killing? I’m still not really clear on that. While I thought something similar about book one, it seemed to make more sense overall and the characters had just a bit more depth. Here I think the characters are a little more one dimensional and I didn’t get as much from the plot as I had hoped, so it just didn’t work as well. Despite this, it’s an easy read that I did enjoy. And while others seemed to have strong feelings about Kit, I found myself more intrigued than anything else and hope that was intentional for the next book.

I definitely didn't expect the second book to be on Nick but what is better than seeing our favourite playboy navigate the complexities of a romantic relationship.

The relationship between Aaron and Nick was so I don't know the right word to use for it. But the way the treaded carefully with each other knowing very well that each of them was suffering from the loss 0f Zack. The way they took their time with each other making sure not to cross any lines without the other's permission was so nice to read. I really like the way their relationship developed and was glad they were able to successfully navigate their relationship despite it arising from an unfortunate incident.

I was also glad to see a sneak peek of Ty and Cam's wedding proposal. They are just so cute.
I am really interested in Roman though. I want to see how they will navigate their budding relationship with that guy from the book shop.

I really like their friend group even though they are chaotic as hell

If you are looking for a slow read about two men navigating a romantic relationship for the first time, this book is definitely for you

“I don’t think I’ve ever been asked out on a real date before.”
“I’m happy to change that.”

These two met under the worst circumstances, the furthest thing from a meet cute ever. And even if it portrays some heavy elements of grief and loss, the romance was pure softness and sweetness.

“Who’s taking care of you, Aaron?”

Playboy Nick turned out to be such a caring boyfriend, and him and Aaron just clicked. Loved seeing them get their happy ending. Not as fun as book one of the series, ‘cause the jury duty aspect was more intriguing than the plot in this one, but still a very sweet time.

There will always be a hole in my heart where my brother used to live, but I can’t help thinking he had something to do with Nick and I finding each other.

Nick, once the effortless playboy of his friend group, realizes he wants something deeper — a truth that hits hard when a casual hookup with Zack fizzles and Zack is later found dead. Aaron, Zack’s brother, is desperate for answers, and when Nick turns out to be the last person to see Zack alive, the two meet under heartbreaking circumstances. As they search for the truth, an unexpected connection forms between them, pulling them closer in both grief and hope.

An unusual, unforgettable meeting sets the tone for this novella, and the pull between Nick and Aaron is undeniable from the start. What I loved most is how slowly and thoughtfully their relationship develops — no rushed hookup, just a gentle build of trust, comfort, and genuine romance as they navigate grief and uncertainty together. The mystery surrounding Zack’s murder adds a compelling thread, and while Kit’s storyline takes up a surprising amount of space without a real conclusion, it still enriches the emotional landscape of the book. In the end, this is a warm, satisfying novella with a final note that genuinely made me smile. This was an MM story with mature content.

This was a really solid, emotional read.

This one follows Nick and Aaron in a strangers-to-more, murder mystery romance, and I really liked how the story balanced the suspense with the relationship development.

Nick starts off questioning his casual lifestyle after a hookup that doesn’t feel right… only to realise that same guy ends up being the murder victim. The guilt he carries from that adds a lot to his character. Then there’s Aaron, trying to process his brother’s death and find answers, and the way their paths cross feels natural, even if the timing isn’t ideal.

Their connection builds through grief, which gives the story a strong hurt/comfort vibe. I liked seeing them support each other and slowly grow closer despite everything going on around them.

It was also nice catching up with characters from book one, and the found family element continues to be a highlight of this series.

My only small gripe was the resolution of the mystery...I just wanted a bit more from it. But overall, this was an engaging novella with a good mix of emotion, romance, and suspense.

Definitely keen to see where the series goes next.

I received an advanced copy of this book, and I am leaving my review voluntarily.
This is the first book I’ve read by Marie Sinclair, and it will not be the last. Next of Kin is the story of Nick and Aaron who meet under gruesome circumstances. Aaron’s brother Zack was murdered and he’s trying to find out what happened to him. He posts flyers around Zack’s neighborhood – Nick calls the number of the flyer. He meets up with Aaron to let him know he was his brother’s hook-up and he may have been the last person to see him…besides he killer. Nick and Aaron have an instant spark that neither want to act upon. However, it’s took much to deny. For Nick this is his first real relationship and for Aaron it’s his most meaningful. I love their connection and how their story plays out. The only downside to this book is the lack of details for Zack. He never feels like a real character, he’s just there. Also – we never find out what happened to him…his character felt like an afterthought. But other than that, the rest of the characters and the MCs were great.

This second instalment of Legal Briefs shifts the focus onto Nick, the group’s serial charmer, and gives him a far more serious storyline than you might expect. What begins as a casual encounter quickly turns into something much heavier, as he’s unexpectedly tied to a murder that leaves Aaron searching for answers about his brother’s final hours.

The emotional core of the story sits firmly with Aaron’s grief and confusion, and the way the narrative explores loss feels grounded and sincere. Everyone reacts differently, and that sense of uncertainty of not knowing what really happened or how to move forward runs throughout the book. Nick’s involvement adds an extra layer of tension, especially as he’s forced to confront both his own habits and the reality of what he might know.

Their relationship develops under difficult circumstances, which gives it a slightly raw, imperfect quality. It’s not a straightforward romance, but rather one shaped by shared pain and the need for connection.

I agree with those who said a longer version of this book would flesh out the situation more. I appreciate the short length, in terms of my reading time, but there are some deep themes here for 130 pages. The romance is sweet, but then there's the murder that inspired it.

Nick's growing dissatisfaction with his life so far, the boredom he feels sleeping around, was sympathetic. And then he finds out he was the last person someone saw before he was murdered, and he meets the victim's brother.

I would have liked to have seen a little more done with the justice part of the plot, as it's hand-waved away when it could have been tied into the story more. The most substantial supporting cast member is a jerk, and I'm assuming we'll see more of him in a later book, as his story isn't resolved here. I did enjoy the appearances by Ty and Cam from the first book, which was much more light-hearted.

Next of Kin hits that sweet spot between suspense and romance—a balance that’s much harder to achieve than it seems. While the way the two MCs meet is highly unusual, their connection feels believable, and I enjoyed watching them navigate the tense waters of grief and guilt as they build a relationship, regardless of what anyone else in their worlds might think.

Marie’s writing is mature and atmospheric. Her love of San Francisco comes through in every mention of the city, but it never overshadows the story. Instead, it enhances it, grounding the narrative in a vivid and unmistakable sense of place.

As much as I would have liked this novella to be longer—because I enjoyed it so much—it stands as a complete story. While I recommend reading Voir Dear, the first book in the series, it’s not necessary to have read it to enjoy Next of Kin.

This book is a captivating read that delves into a wide range of emotions, from profound sorrow and loss to guilt, regret, forgiveness, love, understanding, and happiness. It’s a slow-burn romance between two characters, but it truly shines once you uncover their backstory. The story culminates in vindication and a satisfying HEA, with a touch of spice to keep things interesting. The book revolves around a friend from the large group in the first book who discovers love in unexpected ways. It’s a powerful narrative about finding healing in the most traumatic times. I’m eagerly looking forward to reading more of this author’s work in the future. I highly recommend this series to anyone with a few hours to spare. I enjoyed a lot this short book about these two guys who have the most atypical first encounter. Nick and Aaron are both hurting and they find a kind of confort in each other that is quite unexpected. They are good together. I loved reading about how their relationship evolves and while the book is quite short, I had enough character and relationship development. I loved to see characters from the previous book and the group of friends is endearing.

Next of kin is the second book of the Legal Briefs series, and can be read as a standalone, but I think it would be more enjoyable read in order.

Given that the story revolves around the unaliving of someone, this book is pretty low-angst. Nick has always been the playboy of his friend group, but is starting to realize he's tired of the casual scene. Casual has never been Aaron's thing, though he hasn't had luck with real relationships either. Through very unfortunate circumstances, Nick and Aaron meet and are immediately drawn to one another. I really enjoyed the emphasis on intimacy as a whole, and thought Nick and Aaron were perfect together. Looking forward to the next entry in the series.

While I enjoyed the first book in this series, this one made me feel like the series was hitting its stride. Nicky and Aaron are very different - or so they both think - when they first meet due to a horrific crime. They come together slowly as they work through their vastly different levels of grief and establish a strong connection that lasts beyond it. Like the first one, this is a book about connection, but the nuances of this one grabbed my attention earlier and kept it the entire novella. I never thought I’d say a book starting with a murder would end up being a sweet journey to an HEA, but this one was.

I love the way Marie thinks …and writes…but I felt cheated with this novella.

There weren’t enough words/pages to do justice to the story or the characters.

The mystery wasn’t really’ solved’ as far as motive, though one suspect was cleared.
Kit is a mess and needs some sessions with a psychologist.
Nick and Aaron are perfect for each other, so an HEA is definitely in their future.

I received an ARC from Marie and GRR , which I was excited about, since I loved the first book in the series.

I’m not sure if I’ll stick with full length books in the future or give another novella a chance.

✨I received an advance copy of this book at no charge. This is my honest, voluntary review.✨

Love can find you in the most difficult and unexpected ways.

When Nick’s hookup doesn’t end up the way he wanted, he never expected that to change his life and bring him the love he was too afraid to want.

Aaron wasn’t looking to fall for the guy who saw his brother for the last time. Neither was he prepared for them to form a bond through this tragedy.

Everyone knew Nick wasn’t the settling down type, but Aaron changed those thoughts the moment they started interacting. Aaron made him want more and that scared him.

Aaron wanted someone long term but according to Nick’s friends, Nick was all about hookups. But Aaron saw more than Nick’s friends ever did. He saw a man who cared and wanted to be cared in return.

Tragedy might have been the reason they met, but it was love that made them stay.

Can’t wait to read the next book. Really intrigued about Roman and our mystery man😁

I did finish the book, but the only reason is because the book is really short. Apparently I don't have a thing for falling in live with the last person your brother spend time with before he was killed. It just completely threw me off and I couldn't get back into the book. Maybe if it was a bit longer it wouldn't have thrown me off so bad. But the feelings came completely out of nowhere and all I could think was: the person you're falling in love with is the reason your brother is dead, because other he wouldn't have been in that alley.
So long story short. It wasn't for me.

P.S. I received an ARC, but this is my honest opinion.

I really enjoyed this novella length mystery/romance. Nick connects with Aaron after Nick is the last person to have seen Aaron's brother alive. The brother left an unsuccessful encounter with Nick and was killed very soon after. As these two exchange information and try to find out who the killer is, they get closer and closer to each other. As in the first book, I enjoyed reading about the side characters, some of whom as likeable and some of whom don't really seem to fit in the friend group, just like real life. I look forward to getting all their stories eventually, especially the more prickly ones.

While this story has an interesting premise--the man who was the last to see Aaron's brother alive is the man he falls for--and while both Nick and Aaron engage my attention, I thought this needed to be longer than a novella. The way that both men deal with guilt and grief, and how they help each other through those feelings, while also discovering their feelings for each other, is quite sweet. The mystery surrounding Aaron's brother's death petered out, and it's hanging over them, and the story, before being solved and dismissed, didn't sit well with me, since his death was the reason they met. It felt rushed, like an afterthought, as the writer remembered to close all the plot holes.

3.5 stars. The MCs meet in a very unusual way, with Aaron trying to find information about his brother Zack's death, and Nick having been the last person to see him alive. This definitely affects their slowly growing relationship in quite a few ways, which fit well into the novella length. I would have preferred at least a reason for Zack's death and his friend Kit's struggles left the MCs' HFN feeling a bit less happy because this was left open. Hopefully, there will be another addition to this series soon.

I enjoyed this pairing and it their unique meeting. And despite the theme of this story, it’s not dark or too depressing.

They meet due to really sad circumstances, but their connection and courting is pretty sweet.

Aaron and Nick are both good guys, and both are in need of finding their space in the world and someone to care for them. To see them as special. Especially as Aaron’s friend group is bit crap.

It was a really good story, and I’m totally curious about Kit, because at this point, I don’t know if he’s likeable or not.

What a powerful read that left me wanting more. A short novella that has much happening in it--but it does manage the sweet balance of love and suspense. I would love to see if re-redone as a full pledge novel. Nick and Aaron are total opposites, who slowly connect and find love. A gripping book that some might see as heavy but it does not read or move heavy. Nick the former playboy who suddenly finds love got into my heart but took me a bit with Aaron but he won me over. One of those books that is best read slowly to feel the full impact.
