This book is just shy of 5 stars for readability and useful content. I went online today to order it for myself after having read through the library's copy. I believe it will be a vital resource in my home library. In fact, I have already been able to make use of at least one of the instructions given for an herbal remedy: I am making an herbal vinegar hair rinse.
The book is full of beautiful pictures and written in a very easy-to-understand conversational style. I have read many herbal books, and this one greatly impressed me with its concise information. I often get lost in the complexity of herbal remedies and this book gave me hope that I can know what to use and when and how.
The herbs highlighted are ones that are either easily grown at home or easily purchased at a GROCERY STORE (no specialty herbs here). All the variety of ways to use herbs is explained in the first part of the book, then the final part is a page devoted to each of about 24 herbs, their uses and a little recipe to go with it.
I just found that the book was so fun and interesting that it made me want to try some of the concoctions! The book makes herbs seem ACCESSIBLE. I feel that if a book achieves its purpose, then it deserves a high rating!
"This is why we smell a rose, watch a bird or gaze at the clear blue sky. These things 'being there' grant us the sensations of being alive."
This Herbal book is great for anyone interested in plants: herbs and spices.
I really liked how the author wrote very simple and straight-forward; the information provided is good (could have been a bit more for me) and the recipes and everything else are well presented.
We have first the Introduction, then 'Making Remedies", the 'Ingredient List' (he chosed himself), 'Herb Chart', 'Treating Everyday Conditions', 'First Aid', to 'Family Health Chart'.
Also I know this is not really what the book is about but in the Introduction I really loved how Christopher points out that there is a loss of appreciation of the world, which came when the so-called "Industrial Revolution" came; and now trees and animals have to justify (!) for 'being there' - hence that's why there's so much cruelty towards nature and the natural environment.
"In this sense everything that delights the senses is medicine: the flowers in spring, the ripple of a river, Sunshine on a cornfield."
Excellent little book. I will be using this book to help make my own remedies. The only thing that lets it down is the poor editing... sentences cut mid way through and extremely small font, are the prime examples.
