Flashes of a forgotten life are all Mattaniel remembers from before his freedom was stripped away. When a shocking revelation forces him into the service of a foreign king, he finds himself entangled in a world of political intrigue and captivated by a woman far beyond his reach.
As the daughter of a king, Elissa knows her duty is to secure her father's ambitions with an advantageous marriage. Yet when her brilliant and enigmatic tutor uncovers a conspiracy that drags them both into a deadly game of treachery, her privileged world begins to crumble. As more fragments of Mattaniel's past are uncovered, enemies close in, loyalties fracture, and their forbidden bond will ignite a chain of events that could reshape the destiny of nations.
The early years of King Saul's reign come to life in bestselling and award-winning author Connilyn Cossette's compelling, biblical-inspired tale.
Connilyn Cossette is a Christy Award-winning, bestselling author who loves digging into the ancient world of the Bible and crafting immersive stories that encourage readers to encounter the Great Storyteller himself. As the grateful adoptive mom of two homeschool graduates and a recent breast cancer survivor, she knows firsthand how Yahweh’s steadfast love redeems every unexpected plot twist. She and her husband of nearly thirty years are based just north of Charlotte, North Carolina, with suitcases always half-packed for their next adventure together.
This is a 5-star series conclusion. Mattaniel stole the show for me!
I was amazed how this character (1) always knew his place even though others wanted him to leave or take advantage of a situation, (2) was dedicated to the safety of others, often putting himself at risk, and (3) continuously ministered despite fighting to survive in a foreign kingdom. Mattaniel’s example inspired me.
There’s a passage where another character tells Mattaniel that the person with whom he (Mattaniel) was sharing about God returned a changed man. What a wonderful chain of events. We can be enslaved to something or someone and still share about God and change someone’s life! The timing is never perfect to share. Just share.
I loved the line where someone is reminded that “the things you’ve endured have shaped you into someone new.” I like that thought as there’s no focus on the negative and an implication that there’s a fresh start.
Cossette encourages readers to have faith that God will finish what he has begun because he “sees the end from the beginning.” Our vision is so limited. Why do we rely on our own understanding?
Cossette brings us full circle and gives us a spectacular ending to a fantastic series. Her closing encouragement enveloped me in a hug: “the One who sits on the Throne of the Heavens holds you close to his heart.” Mattaniel knew it. I need to remember it.
I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.
I’m not much of a romance reader, but I make an exception for Connilyn’s stories every time. Set in ancient Biblical times, I’m able to imagine these stories of our spiritual history in a deeper way through her tales of adventure, joy, heartache, redemption, and yes, romance. This is the final story in The King’s Men series, another of her series that didn’t disappoint. Set in the time of King Saul, these stories stay true to the essence of Biblical history without a lot of modern phrases or behaviors that pull me out of the story. This month, we’re wrapping up the stories of the cousins after following some of these characters for six years!! I can’t wait to see what my favorite Biblical fiction author comes up with next!
I received a free review copy of this book from Baker Book House. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own and I am disclosing this per FTC 16 CFR Part 255.
"One small act of obedience may have eternal repercussions, completely unbeknownst to us."
I was not expecting the last and youngest cousin's story to unfold like this. It was more grand, more colorful, more adventurous, more delightful and more everything than I had expected or hoped. The first part of the book felt more like historical fiction in 1029 BC Tyre. Mattaniel's first person voice was honest and humble. He had such a big heart guided by loyalty, compassion, justice and truth. Even in a hostile foreign land with hazy memory of the Ancient One, he didn't let go of Yahweh but clung to Him. His sharply honed intelligence, scholarly ways, and gift for languages enhanced his character into a fantastic hero. Elissa's tender heart and clever mind made her an equal match to Mattaniel. I enjoyed learning about the Tyrian king's court through Elissa but also grieved with her for so many hurts that surrounded the women in that court. The latter part of the book brought Mattaniel/Shalem into contact with King Saul and the young shepherd boy gifted with the lyre and song; this part felt like we were back in Biblical fiction and I really enjoyed spending time with the Levites as they worshiped. I also loved catching up with the three cousins and their families. There was a suspenseful subplot in the story, woven around multiple attempts at murder in the Tyrian court, that added an intriguing and surprising layer to the book.
I am sad to be at the end of this grand adventure. Many thanks to Avi, Zevi, Gavi, and Shalem for this incredibly edifying journey. And, of course, many more thanks to author Connilyn Cossette, the queen of Biblical fiction, who breathes sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch into the Old Testament world to help us experience the Word in a new and deeper way. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Bethany House Publishing via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
I’ve been following this series for the last few years, and having Shay’s story as the ending was amazing! Also seeing Connilyn’s journey, in the author’s note made me tear up. I related majorly to her author’s note, where she wrote down heroes and heroines who were fighting the same ancient human battle of trying to be the king of your own life when things were spinning out of control.
I loved seeing that throughout this series, and it’s been mirrored in my own life—how many times have I tried to take control and be the queen of my life? God’s way is better than my own.
These characters have been beautiful to follow throughout the years, and I’m so thankful for the gift God has given Connilyn.
I feel my life has changed ever since I began reading Christian fiction books years ago, revealing a depth to Old Testament living which was beautiful.
Quote I loved:
“I doubt any of us will know the fullness of the impact we make during this life. One small act of obedience may have eternal repercussions, completely unbeknownst to us. Perhaps, one day, no one at all will remember the name of Samuel Ben Elkhanah. And perhaps the name Dhalem ben Iyov will be etched in stone for generations. But that is not what is important. Of far greater value is willingness to bow your knee to the King of all Kings and follow His ways for all the days of your life. Some of us will walk deeper, darker valleys than the rest, but rhat only means the light is much clearer, and far brighter, on the other side.”
"Your suffering, difficult though it was, shaped you into someone new. Someone prepared to walk a path few are called to. It is not comfort or safety that forms us into vessels for his purposes, after all, but suffering and trial.”
Once again, another powerful read by Connilyn Cossette! I loved having so much of the backstory, along with the Hebrew and biblical references woven throughout the story. It even made me want to go back and revisit my Hebrew lessons!
This forbidden romance had me completely invested. Elissa is the king’s daughter, facing an arranged marriage she didn’t choose, while Mattaniel is the tutor meant to prepare her for it. He doesn’t remember his past, and as the mystery surrounding the kingdom unfolds, they both have to wrestle with God’s plan for their lives. I was rooting for these two, even when I couldn’t see how there could possibly be a way forward for them.
I loved getting glimpses into Mattaniel’s past and especially loved Elissa’s heart and determination to do what was right, even when it came at a cost.
Since this is the final book in the series, so much of the story comes full circle, with earlier pieces being explained and tied together. I think it could be read as a standalone, but I’m sure those who have read the earlier books will get even more out of this story. It definitely has me wanting to go back and read the whole series in order!
I loved the mystery, the romance, and the biblical truths woven throughout the story. I can’t wait to see what Connilyn Cossette writes next, and I can definitely see this series becoming a reread for me in the future!
I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.
I do not know how to write this review. I read 13 books in prep for this release. Rereading this no spice Biblical fiction series with romance was the height of reader’s bliss. My favorite series from my favorite author. But I was in no way prepared for this conclusion.
This is an epic finale to this Christian romance series. So much depth of character, circumstance, and faith. So much faith. This series has grown me. Taught me so much. Reminded me of truth and priorities.
Behind the phenomenal fiction and faith, I really enjoyed the forced proximity, forbidden romance between the daughter of the King and a servant who can’t remember his name. Tones of a love triangle, political intrigue, life and death, journeys to faith, and so much more.
Truly, an amazing read. A series that I have highlighted copious passages in and talk about with my family and friends and Bible study. Reminders and lessons we all need to hear - repeatedly - as our minds forget these truths so quickly as the world shouts loudly in our ears.
I am ever so thankful to this author for persevering with this series in the midst of such trials. She has created phenomenal pieces of art that are laced with Biblical truth in every word and will edify the faith of all who read them. The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 1.
I have now words. And I have lots of words. Connilyn Cossette. You. Are. Amazing.
We are finally here! Finally get Shalem’s story! Finally after 4 years get to find out what happened to him! I don’t think I have ever cried so much in a book. Not just a tear every now and then, but blurring the page as tears streamed down my face! To see Shay restored, the cousins reunited. Just beautiful!
The way Connilyn weaves pieces of all 3 (well actually 7 including the novellas) previous books together- astounding! And tear jerking! So beautiful! It was truly like a glimpse of getting to see God working to put all the pieces together. Sometimes when we go through suffering we don’t get to know the whys, the outcomes, or the ripples, but this story was a beautiful example of seeing all of those and God’s hand controlling all of it!!
And as beautiful, moving, and emotional as it was to finally find out what happened to Shay, somehow Connilyn wraps it up in an edge-of-your-seat mystery! Talk about an emotional roller coaster! And nestled in all of the twists and turns is a beautiful love story.
This was an excellent conclusion to the King's Men series! Throughout this series, we've been waiting to see what happened with Shalem, the youngest cousin who went missing in book 1, and this book finally answers those questions! Though this story could probably stand on its own as the plot-line is defined within this book itself, this series is definitely best read in order as there are spoilers from the prior books in this one, and there might be some confusion when the boys "reunite" in this story if you haven't read the other books. Fans of the series will be glad to finally get some answers! When Mattaniel finds himself in the service of a foreign king as a tutor to his daughter, he can't help but be intrigued by the woman who is attempting to deceive him regarding her own wit. With a forced proximity and forbidden romance trope underlying this story, there are also tones of espionage, amnesia, and mystery set along the backdrop of ancient times (1032-1029 BC). There was a plotline that required some unraveling, a surprise villain, wonderful character development and a solid faith thread as a few characters share their experiences with Yahweh. I enjoyed everything about this book from the character arcs to the prophesies to the reunion of family to the twists and turns in the plot to the development of faith and sneak previews of future Bible characters. This book had it all! If you enjoy Biblical fiction, I can heartily recommend this book/series. Special thanks to the author and publisher for an advance copy of this book. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.
This was my first time to read a Cossette book, and I really enjoyed it. I read it just fine without having read the first three books in the series, but I will for sure go back and read the previous books. I've already added book one to my kindle and look forward to diving into it soon. The author has beautiful, lyrical way of putting the words on the page. I loved the mystery of Mattaniel trying to figure out the life he can barely remember before he became a slave, and the conundrum of Essie having to face marrying a man she doesn't want in order to fulfill her father's, the King of Tyre's, political agenda.
I highly recommend this book. It was truly phenomenal.
Throne of the Heavens is the final book of the King's Men series and one must read the first three books to fully appreciate this story. We are introduced to Shalem "Shay" in Voice of the Ancient when he follows his cousins to fight for King Saul, but is left behind tucked into a cave until the battle is over, only to disappear. After seeing glimpses of Shay as the cousins attempt to trace his steps throughout the previous three books, I was intrigued to see how Cossette would tie it all up.
Reading how Shay depended on the oral stories and knowledge of God that he remembered from his childhood, was a beautiful reminder of the power of faith and the ways in which storing up and meditating on God's word provides strength, comfort, and resilience during life's most difficult moments. Cossette is a master at weaving Biblical events and historical research together, creating a desire in readers to compare the story to the scriptures and Biblical account.
No matter if you are riding a mountain top high or in the darkest valley you have ever experienced, God is on His throne and this book is a wonderful reminder of how present and protective God is of each of His children.
I received a free review copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own and I am disclosing this per FTC 16 CFR Part 255.
Writing with tears in my eyes, I love this series so much! I hate to say goodbye to characters that I have come to love and cheer on, as they come to know the Ancient One Who sits on the Throne of the Heavens. What a grand adventure the four King's Men have been on!
This is Shalem's story. He was badly injured, then enslaved by the people who found him. God used his circumstances to mold him and help him become who he was meant to be.
Every one of Connilyn Cossette's novels takes me to ancient world and opens my eyes to new facets of my Creator through her vibrant stories. I cannot recommend her books enough! My family may think I'm a little crazy because of my joy whenever a new book from Connilyn shows up!
Finally Shalem’s story has arrived and I get to see what has happened to him during the time he was separated from his cousins. What an adventure he has had, including a shipwreck, and now it’s only just beginning as he ends up in the household of the king of Tyre.
I was immediately invested in his life as he transcribes ancient texts, teaches a princess a new language, and navigates the intrigue that surrounds him. As he reads the ancient texts memories lost to an injury begin to surface and he longs to know who he really is, beyond being a slave and servant to a king.
Throughout the book a clear picture of God’s guiding hand and intervention is shown, reminiscent of Joseph. Through his kindly slave owner who promises freedom, to his interactions throughout the king’s household, and his protection God is leading him home.
The side characters added to the authentic feel of the book propelling the story forward and causing me to either empathize with them or plot against them. This book truly is an immersive experience steeped in historical richness and pulling me into the past.
I received a copy courtesy of Bethany House. This is my honest opinion of the book. I highly recommend it.
I have loved every minutes of the King’s Men series, and while I’m sad it’s ending, it was such an end as to be worthy of remembrance. (Had to sneak a lil LotR reference in there.) I was waiting for this POV through the whole series, and while Mattaniel’s story just breaks my heart, there were so many rewarding moments throughout the book. I dislike putting spoilers in my reviews, so I will say I really appreciated the way in which Connilyn Cossette resolved the issues of Mattaniel’s memories and his past. I thought it was really beautiful to see something a little different.
I really loved watching Elissa and Mattaniel interact, and the king’s palace setting was such an interesting place to explore. I always love a glimpse into other cultures in historical fiction, especially in Biblical reading. The romance was so sweet, and the payoff at the end of the story was so worth the four books it took to get there.
In case it isn’t already obvious, I rated this book five stars!
I received a complimentary copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
This book concludes the series of Biblical fiction set during the reign of King Saul, but can be read as a standalone. This was such an interesting and well-researched books that brought to life the different nationalities that surrounded Israel at that time. I loved the characters and the character development and the lessons from this book - hope, resilience, knowledge of God. A great read. I got the ARC from Bethany House | Bethany House Publishers via Netgalley. This is my honest feedback
“Are you saying Yahweh has some sort of grand purpose for me?” “Not necessarily. Although that might depend on what one considers grand. I doubt any of us will know the fullness of the impact we make during this life. One small act of obedience may have eternal repercussions, completely unbeknownst to us.”
This amazing Biblical fiction story has forbidden love and a forgotten past. It’s packed with faith, intrigue, twists, redemption, and restoration. I loved the reminder that God is on His throne in heaven and that whether we are on the mountain top or in the darkest valley He is there, He knows, and He loves us.
Mattaniel is patient, brilliant, and kind. He has been through so many horrible, painful things yet his faith in Yahweh stands strong. I loved how he depended on the stories he remembered and his knowledge of God to get him through. I loved how gentle and patient he was with Elissa. I loved their friendship and romance, and how they were willing to walk away because of that love. I loved the restoration “Mattaniel” experienced and the incredible friendship and loyalty he found. I loved his determination to uncover the evil in the palace. Elissa is determined, gentle, and devoted. I loved her intelligence and her interactions with Mattaniel. I loved the softening and understanding she experienced, and how she, her mother, and sisters desired to learn about Yahweh. Elissa and Mattaniel had to learn (or remember) to seek the will of Yahweh, which is something we all can relate to at times. They faced some heavy trials but their happily ever after was beautiful. Such a satisfying ending to this amazing series!
A few more quotes: 🩵 For a few elusive moments, she had not been the daughter of a king and I had not been a slave. 🩵
“It’s been far too long since the four of us had an adventure together. We’re not going anywhere without you.”
“Shalem—I mean, Mattaniel—was nothing but respectful.” “He was. But I suspect the boy would burn down this entire palace if you asked him to.”
Note: This is book four in The King’s Men series. It can be read as a standalone but you will appreciate the story more if you read the other three books first.

Connilyn Cossette's Throne of the Heavens is a wild, jubilant conclusion to The King's Men series.
The best of the lot by far, it follows the fortunes of Mattaniel aka Shalem. He wakes up enslaved to Sidonians with a blank slate for a past. He does not know who he is, his name, race, ethnicity, nothing. Named Mattaniel, since his clothing gave away a part of his identity, he remained their slave, trading up and down the coast and inland, before finally ending up in Tyre as a merchant's slave.
Now on a ship tossed on the high seas, only Mattaniel, his Tyrian master and friend, Adin make it to shore on the northern island of Shardan. After three years there, they return to Tyre. Mattaniel's master has promised to manumit him for saving his life, but before he can do so, he is thrown into prison by the all powerful king of Tyre and Mattaniel enslaved to teach the King's second daughter Elissa the Shardan language to prepare her to marry their prince.
Elissa, for reasons of her own, pretends stupidity when Mattaniel tries to teach her the language, but the two of them are drawn together. Will anything ever come of an ill fated romance between a royal princess and her slave tutor who doesn't even know who he is? Will Mattaniel ever be free to search for his heritage and uncover the truth in the hopes that his memory might return? Who is behind the various acts of dangerous sabotage in city of Tyre, causing racial tensions against the Hebrews to flare up? What about those flashes of memory he keeps having or those dreams that seem prophetic?
The novel is rife with knife edge tension as it ought to be, set as it is in a powerful, royal court and fraught with more unseen dangers than an iceberg on the ocean's calm surface, in the dead of winter. Cossette navigates these shark laden waters with an ease that speaks of her skill and craft. Overall, a supremely enjoyable, faith-filled novel that keeps you on your metaphoric toes. You seldom read better. I thoroughly enjoyed my ARC copy and these opinions are my own, uninfluenced by any other considerations.
Connilyn Cossette is a master storyteller. She has captured my imagination with her historical detail and vivid descriptions, kept me intrigued with her skillful plot pacing and immersed me in the internal lives and struggles of her real-life characters. Throne of Heavens is a worthy conclusion to an epic series.
Finally readers are treated with Shalem's story. His disappearance years ago has long been felt by his family and friends. It can definitely be read as a standalone, yet readers will appreciate it more if they have read the other books in the series. Strong themes come full circle when wisdom gained by time and circumstance unite the four young men once again.
This is a wonderful story of a young man who has lost many of his early memories, yet his remembrance of his faith in the Hebrew God and its stories is strong. Having spent half his life in slavery, he finds himself in service of a king. I loved all of the historical detail and the inner workings of the palace. One of his duties entailed tutoring one of the kings daughters. I was thoroughly invested in their developing friendship. When several tragic events threaten the royal family, he is caught in the middle of a deadly game of treason. As he seeks to uncover the identity of the enemy, he also wonders if he will ever regain his memories and return home to his family.
I have cherished this series as the four young men,the king's men, followed the faith of their people, rebelled and suffered consequences of actions when the followed their own path, but eventually turned their lives over to the Ancient One, the One who sees and loves each and every one of us.
I love the way the author challenges my faith in a fictional story with truths that are still relevant, transcending time and place. I Peter5:6-7
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher through Netgalley. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
#CoverLoverBookReview received a review copy of this book. My honest opinions and thoughts—not influenced by anyone.
I love Mattaniel’s story! This book is so satisfying and full of emotion. It’s clear that Connilyn Cossette puts so much prayer, research, and heart into it. She is such a gifted storyteller, bringing actual biblical people and events to life with thoughtful fiction, creating a moving, faith-filled story that is entertaining and meaningful.
The relationship between Elissa and Mattaniel is beautiful, and I really enjoy the romance and forbidden-love storyline. The themes of God’s authority and mercy, and holding on to faith through hard times touch me deeply. Romance and redemption come together in a beautiful story of resilience, obedience, and love.
This final book in The King’s Men series can be read on its own, but I think the story feels even richer if you read the entire series.
I knew I’d love this book. I am a huge fan of Connilyn Cossette’s writing because the emotion she draws from me is unmatched. This is a heartfelt and memorable ending to the series.
This fourth installment of The King’s Men series is everything readers are hoping it will be! We have been waiting for Shay’s story, and this book does not disappoint. Finally seeing the series conclude by solving the mystery of what happened to Shay is extremely satisfying, and to also see him paired with a princess of Tyre in a slow burn romance was so intriguing! You start the book thinking “How on earth could these two end up together? How will this play out? They are from two different worlds!” And then, via an ever-changing and thoroughly entertaining plot, we see the happily ever after! Absolutely fantastic writing delivers a riveting story while also pointing to the King of Kings who is hope and light to those who follow Him. Throne of the Heavens is an excellent culmination of a fantastic series and the exciting beginning of another, and I can’t wait to see King David’s beginning next!
I received a copy of this book for review purposes. My thoughts are my own. I truly loved it!
Only complaint. I think all the parallels and encounters from the last three books could have been integrated better. But other than that.... Gil grinned from ear to ear. Got his socks in a wad waiting for them to stinking resolve and get together. And still adored everything. I can't even with these books. I'm trying to figure out something else to write in this review But I've honestly loved these without much reservation or any sort of major critiques. Connilyn inspired a lot of my writing and writing style. And definitely gave me a massive outlet for my hopeless romanticism as I so often call it. But... I've also tossed her to some of the writer folks I trust and told I'm not just cheesy and sentimental and that she is actually that good. XD. So thanks Connilyn for putting together such an awesome collection of stories! And I can't wait for your new series to come out!
I’ve anxiously waited for this conclusion to The King’s Men series, and it did not disappoint. At last, we find out what happened to Shay when his cousins went to fight in King Saul’s army so many years ago.
Tossed about for years as a slave, Mattaniel has no memory of his childhood—or even his real name. All he has are vague dreams of three boys and an unusual gift for languages.
After being shipwrecked and rescued by a pirate king, Mattaniel is sent to Tyre as an emissary to help forge a covenant between two kingdoms. There, he meets Elissa, the king’s daughter. His task is to teach her a new language in preparation for her marriage to the pirate prince. If he succeeds, he’ll finally secure his freedom.
But as Mattaniel and Elissa spend time together, they’re drawn to one another, even though they both know a future together is impossible. Then mysterious enemies attack Elissa’s family, and Mattaniel comes to their rescue, saving the lives of her parents and sisters.
The Hebrews are blamed for the attack, but Mattaniel knows they’re innocent. Uncovering the truth will force him to confront the past he can’t remember, discover who he really is, and ultimately choose between the woman he loves and the life he was meant to live.
Shay’s story brings this entire series full circle in the best possible way. I loved finally getting the answers we’ve been waiting for and watching all the pieces of his story fall into place.
One of my favorite things about Connilyn Cossette’s books is the way she weaves biblical events and historical research into her stories so seamlessly. The world feels so vivid and real that it’s easy to forget you’re reading about events that happened thousands of years ago.
And these four cousins! They truly find their way into your heart over the course of the series. Shay, like his cousins before him, is a strong and mighty man, but there’s also such tenderness in the way he loves and protects Elissa. I loved Elissa, too. At first she seems sheltered and perhaps even a little weak, but underneath that exterior is an intelligent, capable woman with strength of her own.
The romance was beautiful, but what made this story especially satisfying for me was seeing Shay’s journey come full circle. After everything he endured, there was something incredibly moving about watching him uncover his identity and discover where—and to whom—he belongs.
Throne of the Heavens is a wonderful conclusion to The King’s Men. It’s full of adventure, danger, romance, family, and the rich biblical history that makes Cossette’s books so special. Most of all, it makes the Bible come alive. You’ll find yourself searching the Scriptures to see which events really happened—and you may be surprised by just how much of this incredible story is rooted in the biblical account.
If you’ve read the first three books, you absolutely don’t want to miss Shay’s story. This was the ending I’d been hoping for, and I’m a little sad to say goodbye to these four cousins.
I received an advance copy of this book on NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
How bittersweet, to reach the end of a 4-book series! I loved revisiting these characters and finding out if/when/how Shalem is reunited with his cousins.
As with the previous three novels, there are lessons in friendship, forgiveness and faith. I especially appreciated the friendships between men and seeing how they matured over time. I think this book has more suspense than the others. Or maybe I was more invested in these characters!
The author did an amazing job showing how depraved King Saul had become. It almost brought me to tears. It was humbling to me that a King who had been appointed by God would dismiss God so carelessly.
The King's Men series is a beautiful series, and I highly recommend it!
I received an early copy of Throne of the Heavens from the publisher. Opinions are my own.
I have had the honor and privilege to read a few of this author’s books and let me tell you every single one has captured me in a new way. I loved this series, now I did read out of order and went back to read the first book before reading book 4. I loved this series so much. I’ve really never been into reading biblical fiction because I felt they were hard to read but this author has changed my mind how much I love biblical fiction now. Connilyn along with another biblical fiction author, Kaylee Scherer are absolutely incredible writers and storytellers. I loved Elissa and Matthaniel, all of the characters in this series have been stellar. It was nice to see familiar faces in this last and final installment of The King’s Men. It was a nice surprise seeing what happened to Matthaniel from a previous book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are all my own.
My most anticipated book in a long time! Shay has been through so much in the years he has been missing. Slavers, shipwrecks, pirates and princesses will have you flipping pages all while threading God’s love and provision throughout each one. I loved this perfect ending to an amazing series and cannot wait to see what comes next!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
What a conclusion to the beloved King’s Men series! Connilyn is a talented, visual storyteller, and you can tell a lot of research goes into the scenes. Once again, we have historical figures showing up alongside the fictional ones, and that’s another favorite element of these books. We also get to catch up with some characters from the previous books - always a treat.
Mattaniel was such a gentle-hearted, sweet hero - I really adored him. And Elissa was cute in her snarky, but sweetly amusing way, drawing forth Mattaniel’s rare smiles. He tried not to, but he couldn’t help himself. The soft, forbidden romance between a slave and a king’s daughter was perfection, and done just right. Neither was willing to risk harm coming to the other, even in the midst of realizing their own wants and desires; it never felt selfish or aversive in how it played out. And they grew to understand and admire each other’s traits of kindness, loyalty, and bravery - rather than simple physical attraction. It’s always good to believe a couple’s love is more than skin deep, and to see the evidence for that.
I know I tend to focus on the romance elements, because that’s my favorite part, but there is so much more to this story than that! Set in such a historical time frame, there is much to explore in moments of friendship and family, drama and mystery. And oh the mystery! It had me all in suspenseful knots trying to piece everything together. I was suspicious of almost everyone!
Two different main characters from two very different worlds also meant a contrast of belief systems, with a kingdom steeped in paganism. I will say, I would have preferred the scene of pagan offerings to be a bit less focused on (divination via entrails). With repeated mentions during the ritual, the only purpose seems to be to show Elissa’s own aversion to what was happening. Personally, I will skip over that scene next read. Thankfully it was short.
This story did a really great job at weaving together past elements from the previous stories and bringing those things into clarity and completion. You definitely do not want to read this BEFORE you’ve read the other books! Major spoilers!
And that means there are very few specifics that I can talk about here.
The epilogue was…different. Let’s just say it wasn’t a usual epilogue, but more of a bonus.
“Throne of the Heavens” was a beautiful story. Clean and no spice. Language is only mentioned as curses, without the words being in the text. Violence is limited and non-graphic, though some methods may effect sensitive readers. Someone loses a finger, for example. Romance is sweet kisses only.
I was given this book for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are mine.
I'm not ready to say goodbye to this series! It's been SO amazing to dive into and get lost in. In this fourth book, I've been so looking forward to seeing how the story would unravel and I am not disappointed. Cossette always does such an incredible job in creating characters that are lovable and deep and this was no exception. Since this book was the conclusion of so many plots and questions from the first three, I had a hard time even seeing some of the pages through my tears.
I was so surprised by many things throughout as we learned more of Shalem's disappearance, but my favorite was the ending chapter that felt like the cherry on top. Also, seeing some characters from previous series or books always feels like a little wink from the author.
One of my favorite things that Cossette also does in her writing is have characters from the Bible make appearances. In this book, one of them was Samuel and his words below stuck out to me: "I doubt any of us will know the fullness of the impact we make during this life. One small act of obedience may have eternal repercussions, completely unbeknownst to us. Perhaps, one day, no one at all will remember the name of Samuel ben Elkhanah. And perhaps the name Shalem ben Iyov will be etched in stone for generations. But that is not what is important. Of far greater value is willingness to bow your knee to the King of all Kings and follow his ways for all the days of your life. Some of us will walk deeper, darker valleys than the rest, but that only means the light is much clearer, and far brighter, on the other side."
"I'd been unfair to both of us by pretending we could have anything beyond a stolen night under the stars. Because I may be the daughter of a king, and he a slave, but both of us wore chains. His were made of iron and mine of pure gold."
This was a beautiful conclusion to one of my favorite series. I had been patiently waiting to find out what happened to Shalem since the very beginning! His story was even better than I could imagine, and filled with God's goodness among trials and suffering. I loved how Connilyn integrated Biblical figures and events in the story; she really is the best at that.
I had a hard time putting this one down. A romance centered around learning a new language was surprisingly filled with passion and tension.
5/5 Stars
