Her contemporary romances in the Behind the Love series are also set in Florida. The novels in her most recent series, Smoky Mountain Romances, are set in the fictional town of Laurel, North Carolina. She is currently working on a new romance series, Rivals in Love. Join the Crandall family of Chicago as the siblings find love despite their focus on successful careers. Her Montauk Romances are set in and around Long Island and feature simple, yet sophisticated beach houses designed with romantic intent.

Civil War Journal from the 2nd Michigan contains the reminiscences of her great-grandfather, Harmon Camburn, who joined the Union Army on April 20, 1861. The book contains his journal as well as annotations about the war in general. She’s also included several appendices that add local context to the journal. This is an expanded version of Civil War Journal of a Union Soldier published in 2013.

She has written several books of nonfiction on topics from gardening to travel to memoir. Her body of work contain stories set in a variety of places. Along with writing contemporary fiction and romances and creative nonfiction, Ms. Zick is also an editor, book formatter, and publisher.

She and her husband live in Tallahassee, Florida, during the winter. In the spring, they enjoy life in the Smoky Mountains near Murphy, North Carolina, where they enjoy gardening, kayaking, and golfing. And of course, in both locations,

Ms. Zick weaves stories that share her philosophy of living lightly upon this earth with love, laughter, and passion.

I had a bit of a debate with myself before rating this book. A part of me wished to give it three stars, whereas another part of me wished to give it four stars. Overall, it’s a three-point-five star read. In the end, I opted to round down instead of up. This doesn’t mean it is not deserving of a four star rating, merely that I was leaning more towards the three stars when I stopped to think about it.

Behind the Altar is the first book in the Behind the Love series, and it was a very interesting read. It certainly leaves you interested in what the future books will give you, curious as to how the tales of the other characters will play out.

The story itself, for me, had ups and downs. There were some points where I was extremely interested in the story, yet there were other points where the story seemed to drag. I cannot deny that the overall story was an interesting one, that it had many aspects to it, yet I feel as though it wasn’t delivered as well as it could have been. There was such potential for emotional impact, and it didn’t quite hit me in the way I had hoped it would. I enjoyed watching things play out, but I never experienced the overwhelming emotions a tale such as this should have provoked from me. When I was enjoying the story, I was really enjoying it. When I was simply reading it to see where things were going, I felt a little underwhelmed. It has left me with the belief that the future books in the series will hit harder, but for me, this one didn’t quite do it.

That being said, I did really enjoy the characters. Whilst I had ups and downs with the events, whilst I felt as though some of the events were a bit on the clichéd side, I really did enjoy the characters. The more I read, the more I enjoyed them. It wasn’t just the main characters I came to love – I also really enjoyed the side characters, hence my desire to read the future books in the series.

Overall, it was an okay read. I had expected something a little bit more, but it has left me hopeful for the rest of the series.

Leah Bryant has a perfect life. Engaged to the local minister, Jacob Davis, in the town of Victory, Florida, Leah spends her spare time running "Soup's On," where she feeds and cares for the local homeless people in the area. When the church board votes to stop funding the charity, Leah's life is thrown into chaos. Leah's passion is fueled by the knowledge of what it was like to be homeless. Jacob's mother, Geraldine found Leah on the streets as a teenager and welcomed her into her own home years ago. For all appearances, Leah has been truly blessed.

The same day Leah learns of the decision from the church board prohibiting the use of the church kitchen to cook for the homeless, Leah meets Jacob's brother, Dean, as he rumbles into town on his Harley. Leah finds herself inexplicably drawn to Dean. Between his muscles and tattoos, there is an intensity that overwhelms Leah, leaving her breathless. Jacob has never had this effect on her.

Dean feels the attraction to Leah also. Her natural goodness and compassion for people are a tonic that feeds his soul. The harder they struggle to stay apart, the more they are drawn together experiencing a passion neither has ever known.

Nevertheless, there is a dark secret that threatens to derail the Davis family just waiting to explode this lover's triangle into a million pieces!

Recommendation:

I don't know about you, but I adore a romance that is filled with magic, especially when it is obvious that the two characters belong together. "Behind the Altar," explodes with sexual tension and sizzles with passionate ardor.

There is just something about a man riding into town on a Harley that gets a woman thinking about romance. Of course, you know he is a bad-boy from the start. He's riding a Harley! With very little imagination, I could picture "Dean," being played by the handsome, Jeffrey "Dean" Morgan, who is the good-looking private investigator, currently playing on the television series, "The Good Wife." I can't help but ponder if P. C. Zick had the same image in mind when she created the character of Dean. One can only hope.

This story revolves around small town America, with all of the incongruities and biases that exist in society on full display. The book is not suitable for younger readers as there is sexual content present. However, I found the love story between Leah and Dean to be real and honest. I thought there was a moral to this love story, about never judging a book by its cover, that was woven throughout the story line, but I will let you be the judge of that.

I look forward to following the life of these characters as they evolve and heal from the tragedies and rewards of true love in the upcoming Behind the Love Series. Book 2, "Behind the Curtain," is the next book in the series.

My Rating:

Character Believability: 4
Flow and Pace: 5
Reader Engagement: 5
Reader Enrichment: 4
Reader Enjoyment: 5
Overall Rate: 4.5 out of 5

"Behind the Altar" by P.C. Zick is a romance with excellently drawn characters and marvellous chemistry between them.
I was surprised to see that the author had chosen a church as the setting for her first romance novel, but given the strength of her other writing I gave the book a try. Surprisingly enough the setting worked very well.
Leah, our main character, runs a soup kitchen and is engaged to the minister. Her focus is to keep the kitchen for the homeless running. Once a homeless herself this is no empty charity for her but an important project. Then her future brother-in-law shows up and the mutual attraction causes further disruption to her life, as does the reading of the will of the late father-in-law.
Past secrets, revenge and forbidden love are often used ingredients in this genre but it is rare that they come across this convincingly and are handled with so much thought. Emotions are given sufficient time to develop and conflicts simmer and brew before they erupt. This is a thoroughly well written story that should appeal to fans of romance as well as family drama and good contemporary fiction.
Very enjoyable.

This book was amazing and really tackled some difficult issues!

Leah is engaged to Jacob Davis, a minister in the local church where she runs her Soup's On program for the homeless. Geraldine, Jacob's mom cancels the program and seems to control everything Leah and Jacob do.

In comes Dean Davis, Jacob's brother who Leah was told was dead. From their first kiss upon meeting sparks fly!

Leah is torn between the two brothers and is not sure what to do but there is a major issues coming into play and Leah may not have the ability to make her own decision.

When everyone's life is thrown into peril and danger, will love survive??

Behind the Altar is beyond your typical steamy guilty pleasure. The pleasure is all there with a riveting story line and plenty of passion, but the underlying thought-provoking social threads are woven neatly and subtly by the author. Zick has mastered the art of the strip tease with this one. Just when you can't stand the heat, you're right in the middle of a soup kitchen for the homeless. It's total brain candy that will have you aching for the next book in the series. It's one of those you'll read cover to cover, so prepare yourself for a long night.

Leah Bryant feeds the homeless of Deer River Camp from a Church kitchen. How long will her altruistic motives get support from those around her? To complicate things even further, Dean Davis, her future brother in law walks into her life. Read more about the truth behind Dean Davis and his mother in this fast paced and interesting book that holds interest throughout. I loved the moral underlying the story of not judging a book by its cover. I look forward to reading the other two books in the trilogy!

Engaged to one brother but wanting the other. Such is Leah's plight in this compelling story of forbidden love that is the first in an exciting new trilogy.

The chemistry between Leah and Dean burns hot, and provides an interesting contrast to the backdrop of a church soup kitchen for homeless vets, which Is Leah's other passion. With well-drawn characters, especially a villain that readers should be hating for a while, this book is a winner.

This story was so much more than what I expected!! Behind the Altar had it all - romance, drama, suspense...did I mention romance?! Between solid, caring Jacob - the man Leah has come to depend on, and mysterious, sexy Dean - the man she just can't stop thinking about, this love triangle will keep you tangled up until the end and you'll enjoy every second of it!

Great story

I really enjoyed this book ,however it was a little strange how Leah became so sexually aggressive after her first sexual experience that to me was a little out of sync with the character, but as I said a very enjoyable story. I received this book free for my honest review

A Lot Happens Behind the Altar… needs more depth

This book was nothing like I expected. I read somewhere this was a Christian book. That’s far from true. Yes, it took place behind the altar alright, as eyes remained closed to all the sin within the church while innocent victims suffered. Horrible closed door events took place. This could have been a really good book had those ‘events’ been dealt with more depth and more compassion. The pages need to draw the reader into what is happening rather than skimming over the difficult subject.

Yes, it’s hard to talk about abuse, let alone write about it, especially incest, rape and adultery. However, if it’s going to be tackled it needs to be developed and explained how things like this happen and why the perpetrators get by with it for so long. No, intimate details are not needed or wanted, but eyes need opened and educated with a better understanding. We missed that in this book.

🤔 OBSERVATIONS:

✒︎ Adultery and premarital relationships are not supported in churches I know. Just because someone goes to church doesn’t make them believer. I had to wonder about Leah.

✒︎ I’ve heard that church can be a hospital for the lost. The vets at the river needed help physically, mentally and emotionally, yet the board only was concerned about the women’s group socials. Tsk, tsk. Board members were persuaded too easily by the lead hypocrite.

✒︎ Hypocrisy, self-righteousness, pride and greed are prevalent here. But that’s reality and this book didn’t hold back.

✒︎ What happened to Geraldine? Where is Mable’s mother now? Will Dean seek her out to talk? How about Jacob, will he ever know who he is? How did their dad find out about Geraldine?

This is a great story about the hardships of being homeless. Trying to to acclimate yourself back to having a regular home, and the dysfunction that is prevalent in our society. It seems the town of Victory has every dysfunction that could affect a person. It's wonderful and not so wonderful characters reflect everything that is good and bad in our society. The healing of Leah is marked by her standing up against the woman who took her off the streets. Leah was chosen because she is nice and despite living on the streets wants to help any one. Service to is Leah's calling. She is set to marry Jacob, the vicar of Victory Church. It is all in Geraldine's plan to control her family until Dean, Jacob's brother rides into town. All the secrets that this family held tight while they lived in Victory come rolling out in their awful truth. Geraldine is the nightmare of bride to be, and her secrets can destroy all of them. Dean is the eldest brother who comes to town for the reading of his father's will, which sets off a storm in Victory. Meet the residents of Victory, Dysfunctional is the new name for real people.

This is the first book by this author that I've read and what a good read. This is the first book in this series and can be read as a stand alone read. The attraction between the characters is perfectly written. The added dark secret in the plot just adds to the story. The love story between the characters feels real and honest. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in this series. I can't wait to read more from this author in the future.

A well written, enjoyable story with some adult content. Hard-hitting issues such as child abuse, homelessness and small town bigotry are the underlying themes to this romantic love story. A lot in less than 200 pages

Needs editing

The author made too many mistakes that should have been corrected. Forgetting things that were mentioned differently previously. I have several notes throughout the manuscript. The editor should have caught things. Maybe the author just didn’t make all the changes?

Ugh. Snooze. I’m not sure why I kept reading all the way to the end. So many flat, cliched characters. Such a predictable resolution that took f-o-r-e-v-e-r to fall into place.

This book piqued my interest due to the name, I read the description, and when I read this book, I was hooked. This book from start to finish had you thinking one way, and pleasantly were surprised with something happier, something more real. I love the characters and the intertwining of them. Leah and Dean are a great couple and the trials they went through prior to meeting each other, to the trials during the time they knew each other made this even more endearing. Nothing vulgar nothing out of context, just a great romance and showing that love does help conquer at the right time. THANK YOU P.C. Zick for this book, and the two others in this trilogy are a definate on my "Must Read" list.
I was given this book in exchange for a review. I am so grateful for this chance and THANK YOU again to P.C. Zick for this opportunity.

I loved this story. It is my first book I am reading by P.C.Zick but definitely not the last. I already purchased the next book in this series. This book had a wonderful romance develop in it while bringing to the forefront of the story two issues that we are faced with today. Child abuse and neglect of our veterans which leads to them being homeless. I recommend everyone read this book and that you are inspired by what the heroine does to aide homelessness.

This is the first book that I have read from P.C. Zick and enjoyed it from start to finish.
Leah Bryant's mother-in-law annoyed me, as she was supposed to do I guess.
Behind the Altar shows that things don't always go the way we think they will.
I look forward to reading more books from the author.

***** A True Romance with Depth

Having read P. C. Zick before, I knew going in, even in the midst of a romance, this author would, along with her authentic and touching characters and a totally engrossing plot, present some kind of deeper theme that most romance authors wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. Turns out in her “BEHIND THE ALTAR,” she accomplishes those three things in spades.

Of course there is Dean, a true stud-muffin male protagonist, who instantly falls for Leah, a strong, beautiful, caring female protagonist. In romance, that may be a given, but here it’s done extremely well. The author also tackles a couple of themes that are doozies: First off, her depiction of the homeless issue lets us in on the daily ins-and-outs of everyone involved––what these poor destitute people go through and what the organizers have to contend with, such as coping with funds being removed or their spaces suddenly unavailable.

Yet Zick doesn’t stop there. She has the courage to take on another strong issue not often talked about in romances—familial sexual abuse. In my opinion, to be able to have that as a subtext and still write a tender, sexy romance, takes great talent and certainly makes for a page-turning novel! Highly recommended.

This book the first in the behind the love series is enthralling, the characters are so real you can't help but fall in love with them. With a villain you love to hate and a love so strong and beautiful any woman wants it. I cant wait to see where the next book will go. This review was done on behalf of Amo & Sarah's book corner.
