This epic finale to the thrilling Mirror Chronicles trilogy sees our heroes undertake the perilous journey to Old Kemet, the place that first broke the worlds in two . . .
“It will come in a final darkness, a last night, from which there will be no dawn.”
The black oozes across pavements, seeps into gutters and rivers. Darker than death, it is the first of five “Undoings” to be unleashed by Thoth in a bid to bring both worlds under his power.
If anyone can prevent his tyranny and mend what is broken, it is Sylas and his Glimmer, Naeo. Along with their friend Simia, they must journey aboard the enchanted Windrush to the Academy of Souls, where it all began. As our world falls and the last of the Suhl battle to survive, Sylas and Naeo must come to terms with each other and their power, confront the unthinkable source of the rift, and discover the truth of Quintessence, the element that binds all things.
Can Sylas and Naeo finally unify the worlds? And if they do, what will it mean for us all?
Ian Johnstone was brought up in Oxfordshire and he now lives in Oxford, which might suggest a man who likes to stick to what he knows. In fact, Ian makes an awkward habit of shifting between worlds. He grew up in a quiet English town but has spent much of his life travelling and working in Africa. He has a love of science but studied English Literature. He grew up in Oxford but received his degree from Cambridge. He started off his publishing career producing books for West Africa and ended up creating futuristic websites and virtual learning environments. Most recently, he left publishing to become a writer. So perhaps it is not surprising at all that he writes fantastical novels about journeys to other worlds. Ian lives on a hill with his wife Emily and his daughter Ella.
The epic conclusion of a fantasy series according to my heart: well written, gripping, and entertaining. Excellent world building and character development, a plot that kept me hooked. Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Wow Well worth the wait. To get into the mood and to make sure that I remembered everything I re-read and re-lived The Bell Between Worlds and Circles of Stone before I started The Last Night. It finishes the trilogy in brilliant epic fashion. The images conjured up out of Ian’s mind are fantastic. The Windrush and Valley of Outs stand out in my mind. How does someone write a fantasy that you can live in, breath the air, and feel the fear, joys and sorrows of the protagonists. I just can’t wait for the films.
Doesn't disappoint. A gripping adventure story but so much more... It makes you think, makes you question. Heart-breaking and moving as well as being thrilling and laugh-out-loud this epic book took me not only on Sylas, Naeo and Simia's journey but on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Beautifully written, it can be read on many levels. A brilliant conclusion to an equally brilliant and unique trilogy.
Super exciting ending to this epic fantasy. Did not disappoint. Loved every minute of this nail-biting story, and wished there was another in the pipeline.
I loved this book, if anything even more than the first two! Throughout the trilogy I felt the fear, marvelled at the magic, wondered at the beauty, laughed and cried with the amazing characters. Silas and Naeo took me on an unforgettably exciting journey to another world and back. What an incredible climax to this amazing story - I didn't want it to end!
