Permanent Spring Showers

Rate this book
Professor Rebecca Stanley-Wilson is having a very bad season. Her husband has just admitted to having an affair. And it was with one of her students.

Blame it on a desire for revenge (or way too much alcohol), she then has had one of her own. Unfortunately for her, her affair was with one of the great upcoming painters of his generation. The ramifications of that one torrid evening will not only be felt across her life but over the entire art world.

Sexy, funny, and very surprising, Permanent Spring Showers is the tale of one very memorable springtime and how it impacts a group of unique artists and dreamers. From the writer who is creating a new literary movement (through outright manipulation) to the hopeful Olympian with the failing marriage to the romantic wondering what he did wrong to drive his love from him, each tale walks the line between reality and fantasy. And waiting at the end of the line is a very important painting… and possibly the revolver used in the Lincoln Assassination.

"Permanent Spring Showers" - where to start...
I was meant to review this work two days ago, but unfortunately I am a little (a lot) behind in my reading and reviews (such is life....).
To make things worse, I am not a speed reader and do not / refuse to skim - I like to take in and savour every word.

At 472 pages this book was a tour de force as I had just over 36 hours to read it... but it was, oh, so worth it. Lately I have been incredibly fortunate to have read a string of very good books, but I thought that this one was certainly something special.
I don't think that I am easily pleased - my standard rating for a good solid book is three stars (I liked it). I am no literary buff either, and although I did study literature and literary analysis through to High School, it was not English Lit, and finding hidden meaning into every line of someone's work was never my thing.
I like to read and I know what I like and what strikes me. ... so in that respect I might be a complete philistine - many apologies.

Enough about me and my disclaimers, and back to the book in question.

Permanent Spring Showers is a complex tale and you need to read its description VERY carefully...
Yes, it all starts with an affair: Bob cheats on his wife Rebecca and tells her as she is just about to leave for a four-day conference in Chicago, where she has a really crappy time. There, Rebecca surely meets a very interesting character, Vince, and ends up having an affair herself.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

By 30% of the book the author introduces you to about 14 active characters, and several other peripheral ones. I am generally terrible with names, therefore, at that point in the book, I had to actually test myself to figure out if I was truly managing to keep up with what was being presented - yep! I drew a map of the characters and their relationships from memory... and I only got a couple of very minor players wrong, which means Mr Southard must have been doing something right with his narration to get through my very thick skull and make all of those characters memorable for me! (see picture with my early morning scribbles).

All of the players are somehow related to Vince, who lives and breathes art; who is charismatic, sexy, exceptional, admirable, despicable, romantic, sensitive and a complete bastard all at the same time. Vince is unique, larger than life and always inspiring.

Permanent Spring Showers is littered with poetry and different points of view, which are very effective and fascinating. Whilst most of the narration is from a third person point of view (POV), Steve's is always presented in the first person, and Jenn's narration occurs in the form of her journals written as personal letters to deceased classical authors. POVs are also often intermingled and therefore timelines are at times very fluid. And of course there is more... but you will have to discover that for yourselves.

Many questions and philosophical matters are raised about friendships, relationships, infatuation vs obsession vs love, and the recurring theme of "just how far is it fair to go for the sake of art?" and "would you be able to live with its consequences?".

You will have to decide for yourselves if Rebecca became involved with Vince out of revenge, or if it was something more (.... "spots in time"...)

Finally, Mr Southard's characters, even the most minor ones, were vivid and truly came alive.
The overall writing was not only original, but utterly beautiful, flowing, easy to read, witty and funny - the best use of proper English grammar I have experienced in a long time.

This is definitely a tale that will stay with me for a long time.
The minus mark relates to the ending of this piece; the resolution was somewhat different from what I was expecting and would have liked to see. That is not to say that the realm of possibilities is not open. In fact, I could easily see a sequel to this... there are just so many possibilities... and that is definitely a book I would read.

What a ride this book was! I can honestly say it was an inspiring novel, and very unique! With a cast of lively, artistic characters and a spin so hard it will leave your eyes wide and jaw hanging until the very last word.
Each set of characters in this book all seems to be a part of a bigger plan, a movement, if you will. A variety of authors and artists alike are manipulating the people around them to achieve the bigger picture--even marriages aren't off limits in this scheme! The premise of this so called plan, reminds me a lot of the devious mastermind producers behind your favorite reality show--in fact, that’s exactly what it is, but in a new and upcoming genre in literature called, “New-Reality”
In order to achieve the desired effect, the “author” goes out into the world and finds a suitable “character”, one that may be easily manipulated and they begin to do their best to direct the characters life into something that would be entertaining once on paper. The author may become a part of the characters life to easier attain the control, may it be as a spouse, a friend, and even family.

Not everyone has an easy time though, guilt is strong in one of our characters, and possible actual love.
All around, I feel this story will stick with me forever as I have never read anything like it and each character in this story felt so real, that I had found myself attaching to them and their emotions! Standing ovation to Mr. Southard for a brilliant piece of work!

Professor Rebecca Stanley-Wilson is out for revenge after her husband, Bob, admitted to having an affair with one of her students.

Determined that an eye for an eye is the best course of action (after a few drinks), Rebecca has the perfect opportunity when she meets up with Vince, a sexy up and coming artist, at a conference in Chicago, and thus their affair begins.

But can Rebecca and Bob live with the consequences of their actions?

This book is a heart-warming and thought-provoking tale about the consequences that our actions have, not just on ourselves, but on others around us too.

The book has many secondary characters, and not only does it delve into Rebecca and Bobs personal lives, it also delves into their’s too. The story mainly surrounds their emotions, problems, troubles and honesty issues.

It is filled with emotional scenes that will have you gripped to the pages, amongst light-hearted moments that will have you smiling, and some moments that may just have you wanting to laugh out loud.

The secondary characters actually played a bigger part in the book than the main two. These were the ones that kept the story alive and the book moving along at a nice, even pace.

‘Permanent Spring Showers’ is an engaging and powerful read, that will have you questioning your own actions in life, and may just have you changing some of them.

Rebecca's marriage is falling apart - her husband cheats on her with one of her students, and then while at a conference, she meets and has an affair with Vince. Everything begins to unravel shortly after their return because Vince becomes obsessed. As an artist, he finds inspiration in Rebecca and wants to hold onto it as long as possible. Meanwhile, a whole slew of other characters come in and out of the picture as they fall in and out of love and their lives unravel.

The beginning of the book had my attention, but with so many characters and intertwining stories it just got to be too much. Nothing will end the way you'd expect.

This book is about relationships and how couples deal with changes in their relationship. There are several scenarios happening in the book showing how the different relationships intertwine with each other. The point of view changes depending on the scenario. Portions of the book are journal entries by Jenn. The only confusing part for me was the change of the point of view. A few times I wasn’t sure who was telling the story.

The book begins with Rebecca and her husband Bob having a loud argument in the front yard. He just told her he had an affair with one of her students. Rebecca is distraught but must leave for a conference. Unfortunately in her haste to load her bags in the car she leaves a box of books she needed to sell at the conference. Once she arrives and realizes her mistake she must call Bob and ask him to send them to her overnight. The books get lost which proves to be just the first of many life changing events for Rebecca. The second is meeting Vince.

Rebecca’s evening with Vince truly turned into a night. They went out to eat, where Vince suggested they start with dessert. I just loved that. How many of us would rather have dessert first instead of being too full to enjoy it? Then they had far too many drinks. The next thing Rebecca realized it was the next morning and there is a stranger in her room. This one foolish act with Vince was all it took to change her life. She just didn’t know how yet.

In another scenario we meet Steve. He had a break up with Anna. They meet together at a café with her new fiancé where things go as well as you would expect them to go. Next we meet Ralph and his wife Lily. He is jealous of the relationship Lily has with her rowing partner Stacey. They are training for the Olympics. He feels threatened by Stacey and believes she will expose him for who he really is. In the midst of everything is Jenn. She wants to write a book about relationships and seems to analyze everyone. She also is an instigator and pushes their actions around if they don’t fit her story. Next we meet Mary, her twin brother Marty, Gordon, her boyfriend, and her roommate Viv.

Vince has become obsessed with Rebecca. He spends all of his time sketching her but is never satisfied with the results. He wants to find a way to give the sketches life instead of being two dimensional but the way he finds impacts Rebecca in every aspect of her life. Never in her wildest dreams could she imagine how her story would unfold. The next act that follows truly casts Rebecca’s future into the unknown. With another strange twist, Vince hires Bob, Rebecca’s husband, to be a building contractor for one of his art projects. And so the plot thickens….

The author have a strong clear style and huge talent. He wrote a clever and very romantic novel, that it will surprise you through the last word. Humor, warmth, love, wisdom, revenge, betrayal, lust, and desire fill the pages. The plots are interesting, thoughtful and very engaging. Southward's book includes themes about live honestly and authentically; how to make our own decisions and accept responsibility for them; how to develop our talents and gifts; how to find our passion and purpose; and how to cultivate an open heart and mind, all taking place in some very unique situations. Each situation walks the line between reality and fantasy. The characters are distinct and their flaws believable, the gender issues are handled with grace and subtlety…. Their conversations and thoughts are filled with humor, expansive love, wisdom and clarity. You will probably experience a world view that is very different than the one you hold now about art and marriage. You will be given access to a world of permanent freedom, love, wellbeing, unity and peace with this inspirational book.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book even when I had to re-read some of the pages. I try to guess the big master plan during reading but of the end I was truly surprised.

A little bit about the story…

Professor Rebecca Stanley-Wilson is very passionate about her teaching career and her book. When she forgets her copies of her book at her cheating husband’ car she feels devastated. Left without books, with shoddy assistant and heartbroken, she sees Vince as her very own prince. Vince's character is "one of the greatest upcoming painters of his generation" as the author describes it. Very charming, very handsome and very talented, Vince becomes obsessed of Rebeca. He sees her as his inspiration and he needs her more then he cares for her as a love partner...

A few more characters are mixed in the main story. All of them are unique and described so well. I could honestly find some of their mind-dilemmas to be so close to what I was feeling in similar situations.

I look forward to reading Scott’s next novel. :)

I stand and slow clap. Wow, no words. An enthralling, fantastic read!

Marvelously wrought, Mr. Southard! What an awesome story, woven meticulously perfect until it all comes together where the reader and the actors of this story have their day of reckoning. It was one of those stories I could see read by an English Literature class and discussed for the many things it tells us about people, their motives, their fantasies, their obsessions, their human spirit. Mr. Southard, once again you have taken my breath away. I couldn't believe you could write anything as good and soul enriching as A Jane Austen Daydream. I was wrong.

This is a story with soap opera characteristics. This multi-layered, well-written, and extremely engaging novel with its unique plot and story setting, felt like a classic. The author dives into the minds of writers, teachers, architects and a wildly talented artist, some with quite twisted tendencies leaving me spellbound with its message.

Each character has his/her own story, and each impacts the other in some fashion. Mr. Southard creates memorable characters struggling with ordinary challenges -- a professor trying to save her marriage, an architect wanting to be noticed, a builder who's bored with just building the usual, a writer working to create a new genre, a new way of storytelling, a wealthy man who marries to keep his secrets, a security guard without much of a presence and an artist with ideas encompassing greatness. Yet, this story is anything but ordinary.

There were moments of chuckling, moments of tears, moments of incredulity. The story gives us hope, the human spirit has no bounds, where the ending could very well be a new beginning, a new direction in life. Grasp it my readers, for nothing is more spectacular and mysterious as the human mind and what it is able to achieve.

It 's a brilliant novel, with the right amount of humor and romance, with really interesting characters and an intriguing and engaging plot.
Rebecca should be in seventh heaven: her book was finally published. But she has just discovered a cheating husband with one of her student and to the presentation doesn't even have a copy of her book to give. Fortunately meets Vince, a handsome boy and even her big fan. She spends with him one of the most fun and carefree evenings of her life and inevitably they end up spending the night together. Rebecca should end there but Vince can no longer to do without her: he is a great artist and she has became his muse.
To make framing to their troubled love story there are other characters, all well characterized and very realistic: they are all artists in various fields, looking for their own way, their own realization and their own identity. They also have emotional problems to be solved, as Ralph who is jealous of his wife going too much time with Stacey or Steve who must overcome the abandonment of Anna.
It's really fun, really cute and intense reading. The pace is very fast, a page leads to another until the surprising and unpredictable final.
Highly recommended, especially for those who want to read a contemporary different from usual

Permanent Spring Showers is a fast moving tale of life, frustration, cheating spouses and consequences. As in real life, everyone seems to want something or someone they don’t have. Cheating is the tool they resort to getting what they think they want. The characters do not foresee the consequences of their actions, which are often long-lasting. More like a rock thrown into a pond that makes concentric circles to the edge.

Most readers will feel sympathetic toward Rebecca as she discovers her cheating spouse and loses her precious books in one fell swoop. They’ll also understand her impulsive need for revenge too. The book is a guilty pleasure for anyone who has wanted revenge on an unfaithful partner.

This serious subject that could turn maudlin is handled in a humorous and page-turning fashion. If all infidelities, heartaches, and divorces could be handled in such a succinct and upbeat fashion, then the world would be a more pleasant place. All that said, it is an entertaining novel, that at times, is also romantic too.

Permanent Spring Showers is a good vacation or weekend book when you want to get away from everything.

I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways.

Southard was able to make me feel like I knew all of these characters without the drawn out description of them that bogs down a book and slows the story.
The fact that I felt I could have a place in this world, so different from my own, is part of the reason I really like this book.
I really don't want to go into the story because I'll get started and will keep going, that's how well the stories are woven together. I can't talk about one without blending into the next and I don't want to ruin any of this book for you.
That being said you should read this. It's full of romance, art, twists and turns, love, and life moments that are easy to relate to.
