Entertaining read tracking the history of the French Foreign Legion from its 1831 founding until the French withdrawal from Algeria in the early 1960’s. It’s comforting to know that if my life were to go to hell, I could always enlist in the Legion. There is no better way to salvage a wasted life, then dying gloriously in battle protecting the Imperial French interest in equatorial Africa- and issued wine while doing it. In seriousness, I was at the edge of my seat reading of the courage and characters of the Legion doing their duty to die fighting in all corners of the global.

A good book detailing the history of the legion's triumphs and heroes. Including the less glorious bits.

Excellent introduction to the Legion. The writing is smooth and his research is thorough. Read this many years ago.
