Josh Salinger grew up with the legend of how his two fathers sacrificed their happiness to save his life. He's been doing his damnedest to live up to that legacy, and he'll be damned if he lets his attachment to Liam Craig, the charming, useful Interpol officer, change his plans in any way.
Liam cut his Interpol teeth on the curious case of Danny Lightfingers—superlative thief, recovering alcoholic, dedicated family man, and Josh's father. Liam fell for Josh the moment they met, but Josh keeps asking Liam to wait… wait until all Josh's plans come to fruition.
Liam is done waiting—but Josh's plans aren't complete by a long shot. Josh lets Liam into his life, but Liam has to be willing to go along for the ride, and it's a doozy. Crossing the globe, the Salinger crew has the grandest caper of them all planned— one that's going to keep Danny safe from the demon he awakened so long ago, and is still threatening the Lightfingers family now.
Is Josh and Liam's love strong enough to sustain them as Josh fights to live up to the legacy that built his very foundations? Can Liam convince him that just being Josh Salinger is enough, and that Josh never needed to be the king of the grifters to steal Liam Craig's heart?
Amy Lane dodges an EDJ, mothers four children, and writes the occasional book. She, her brood, and her beloved mate, Mack, live in a crumbling mortgage in Citrus Heights, California, which is riddled with spiders, cats, and more than its share of fancy and weirdness. Feel free to visit her at www.greenshill.com orwww.writerslane.blogspot.com, where she will ride the buzz of receiving your e-mail until her head swells and she can no longer leave the house.
Absolutely fantastic ending to this series. I was so worried about Josh's mental and physical health this whole series. I am so glad Amy Lane didn't put him with the married cop. I absolutely love Liam with all of my heart. He is the perfect match for Josh. He's his own man, having his own story that intersects very serendipitously with Josh. The romance in this one wasn't drawn out. Josh had pushed him away in the last book but this one starts with them on the right foot. Plot wise this one was FUN. The big bad from the entire series was the final boss of this novel. Their plan to finally put him to bed was so complicated and invigorating. I loved that we got to see the whole cast. I love every single character in this series. It will be an annual re read for me. I'm so very happy Josh finally got everything he needed.
If you want a plausible caper with any sense of reality, this is not it. As the author states, this is a work of fantasy, but oh what a fantasy!!
While completely rooted in our world, flaws and all, the clan works to right wrongs and protect their family in the most extraordinary way. Taking down an old enemy is no easy feat and the Salinger’s overcome many obstacles to do so.
We get the point of view from many of different characters and couples that have come together over this long series, but at the heart is Josh and Liam’s HEA.
It was a wild ride that left me with tears as often as with smiles. A perfect ending to everyone’s story!!
I received the ARC provided by the author for my honest review.
This is the longest look in the series so far. Based on the time count on my Kindle. So this one took me several days to read.
In this book, we gets to read the... not quite full but pertinent history of Liam, who appeared as side character in previous books. The byproduct of this is we also gets to see
The pacing in this book was interesting. Because there are a lot of pages for covering a lot of activities. But it didn't feels that long at all. For me, it was pretty brisk.
This maybe counted as Josh's book but the scheme this time was huge and required all hands on deck. And it really was ALL Hands. Which means
From the perspective of someone who knew nothing about how long it takes for body to heal, I would say
This book also went to various locations in the world, though mainly in Europe, in order to complete their ultimate plans.
And now, my slightly... conflicting feelings about the "resolution."
The romance... feels like a typical romance for Amy Lane's books. Which I have a read a lot already. So you know what to expect.
Overall, this is still a very entertaining read. Worth the wait for Josh's turn as the MC. I wonder if this series will continue after this or not... I would be happy to read more for sure.
“I’ll take you any way I can get you… just don’t leave me behind.” This book. I’ve been waiting as patiently as I can for Josh’s turn to find his happy, he’s has a rough time of it throughout this series… but of course, Amy Lane wouldn’t be Amy Lane if she made his journey easy on readers, so before I got to the part where I could hug my book and sigh happily, I had to stop and breathe through it and remember that she would never leave us hanging. “I needed you to love me for who I am… not what illness made me” I knew going in that I adored Josh, but that the stubbornness that carried him through the trials of the earlier books would also be a formidable hurdle for Liam to face and I really appreciated how unwavering Liam was in the face of it. He’s absolutely a delight and the perfect balance for Josh. But this book is more than their love story, it’s an ode to this motley family who’ve built the connections they weren’t born into. The way they unconditionally love each other is pure and poignant and endlessly patient, even when it’s hard. Every character gets their moment in the spotlight where Lane showcases how indispensable they are to the success of the whole. “Much like the family’s capers, things didn’t have to be perfect to be right.” The plot itself? With so many moving parts, I found myself marveling at how the author kept it all sorted clearly enough & progressing quickly enough that I was fully engaged and not overwhelmed with mundane details. It’s fiction, so I was ready to suspend disbelief and let myself believe that the world *could* work like this. I’m so ready for a win against the big bad and Amy Lane lets us have one. For readers who’ve been following along, this series finale struck just the right note for me and is the treat we were hoping for – not just the long awaited evolution of the relationship between Josh and Liam but it brought the entire series arc full circle so we could say a satisfying goodbye to the entire crew. For new readers, this is absolutely not where you want to step into the saga of this family, you need to take these books in order – there are too many nods towards what’s come before to fully appreciate how many plates this crew manages to keep in the air. I’m relying on Amy Lane to be unable to let these characters go, I’m going to need to revisit them and get glimpses of how they’re faring.
Having said that, as much as I loved every word she wrote,I hated reading every word, knowing this was our farewell to the Mastermind team.
Finishing off the Mastermind series,I expected Amy Lane to give us one good caper to cap the series. I was wrong, we didn’t get one caper we got a series of small capers in the service of finally getting revenge on notorious thief and art hoarder Andres Kadjic. While running the extra long con on Kadjic, we are treated to the last HEA recipient’s stories; Liam and Josh, and maybe Molly could find a not gay lover, too. After spending many years in Interpol, a number of those following clues left by Danny “Lightfingers” ,aka Benjamin Morgan;Liam Craig is intrigued by the art thief. When he finally gets to meet “Lightfingers”, he learns about his back story including the little boy Danny left behind. Danny lets Liam see behind the scenes, the lover who married a pregnant woman to save her from her father and the little boy that baby became, whenever he returns to Danny’s orbit. After Liam runs into Danny on one of his ops with Danny’s reunited family, that now includes several of the boy’s chosen family of friends, he’s drawn into the hijinks of a family of grifters, thieves and general makers of mayhem. After years of seeing the boy grow, via Danny’s pictures, he finally gets to meet the boy, Josh, and falls immediately in love. Josh Salinger, the boy Liam watched grow through Danny’s pictures, knew he had a soft spot for peace officers, but meeting Liam Craig is like meeting the other half of his soul. Unfortunately their first meeting was shortly after Josh was diagnosed with cancer, and he doesn’t want Liam to want the perpetual patient he feels like he is. He is also unwilling to rest after beating said cancer, and is back in the hijinks business too soon. Josh finally gives in to his feelings for Liam and forces himself to be up for the games his family has planned. Liam loves Josh, and doesn’t mind Josh being ill, but is put in a bad place when Josh’s body starts to give out. Can the gang finish the game, get the bad guy and go back to lower stakes play, before Josh is lost completely?
I loved this book. I will recommend it to the sky and back. I will spend my remaining productive years bugging the hell out of the author to give me more!!!! I can’t emphasize enough how much you should read this book, and join me in my occupation of harassing Amy Lane.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is the book we’ve all been waiting for. All the crew members have worked hard, pulled together, and have each found their special person. Everyone except for Josh.
Grace calls Josh “Cancer Boy”. Then he calls him “Recovery Boy” as he’s healing from the aftereffects of his treatments. There has always been one person who has stayed by his side (besides his parents and Grace). Liam Craig, the sexy Irish Interpol agent, with the curly hair, freckles, and a smile that made Josh think naughty thoughts.
Their bond has been forged through jobs that put Josh in grave danger. Liam has watched Josh over his illness and recovery. It’s now time to claim the man he has loved from the first day he fell into his arms.
Josh has his own self-doubts. He wants to be strong enough for Liam telling him, “I just needed you to love me for who I am... not what illness has made me.”
There is one last job that has all hands-on deck. An evil man from Uncle Danny’s past has surfaced and has his eyes set on the capture and destruction of Josh’s beloved father figure, Danny “Lightfingers”.
The caper is long, and requires all the players to come together, and each put their unique skills to the test to save Danny from the clutches of his ex-sadistic power-hungry one-time lover. It was a dark time for Danny, and memories of the past resurface.
Can Josh, Craig, Felix, Julia and the family they have cobbled together finally put the past to rest? Can they pull off this multi-level operation that spans the far reaches of the globe?
The settings are beautifully described, making me wish I could be there at the times of sunsets, the smell of the ocean spray, and feel the heat of the baking sun in South America. The capers are well planned out, precise, and accomplished through the skills sets of the entire team.
If you love found family, fierce loyalty, and love that binds family together, you will enjoy this exciting, action-packed story that will leave you thinking, “just one more chapter”. Amy Lane had me in tears, laughing, and cheering throughout the entire saga.
You won’t want to miss this epic conclusion of the family of grifters that have won my heart.
The seventh and final book in the Long Con series, the one we’ve been waiting for, JOSH’S BOOK! This was SO worth the wait—but I am SO sad this series is over.
That being said, the ending was so fitting. Josh got his HEA, and though I had my thoughts on Nick and questioned if that would go anywhere, Liam is perfect for him. He totally gets him, gets his relationships and family, understands who he is. Even better, he comes with a brother that just might be the perfect fit for someone else (no spoilers!).
We get a great start and build of a relationship between them, and of course we catch up with everyone else and see where they are, how they are doing, getting some surprise news here and there.
And the caper. It was the grandest caper with the greatest resolution, and it put their past to bed, to rest, wrapped it all up.
So yes, great heist story, HEA and resolution for everyone, and I was left smiling. If this greedy reader had one niggle, it was that I wished for a look into the future. I want to know where they were in a year, sue me!
So, great book by a great author, great-wrap up, but no, no, no, I WANT MORE.
Highly recommend, and yes, this whole series goes straight to the re-read pile.
The whole Long Con series has been building to this – Josh Salinger, son of Julia Dormer-Salinger and Felix Salinger and Daniel Morgan (who now lives under a new name – is running the whole game, and finding the love of his life simultaneously. Hmmm, how to review without serious spoilers?! You *can* read this without reading the six previous books, but your experience will be enhanced if you know the back stories of the other characters.
Author Amy Lane has always said these are fun books, written much in the vein of fun heist movies – The Italian Job, Ocean’s Eleven, etc. There are some catchy Easter eggs here for those who enjoy the genre. I especially liked the Thomas Crown Affair-like event at a famous art museum. Of course, all the various heists lead up to an attempt to bring down the Big Bad of the series.
Is this the end of the Salinger crew? Given that there has been some cross-pollination between this crew and the Victoriana crew, I doubt it. Hey, Amy – It would still be nice to get a real story for Molly!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The Grifter by Amy Lane is the culmination of the series and the worldwide whirlwind exploits of the Salinger family . Josh and Liam have been separated because Josh wanted to make sure that Liam didn’t just see him as his sickness but as the man he has become. While still in recovery Josh and the family have one more job to keep Kadjic from coming after Danny’s loved ones. Liam would do anything to keep Josh safe and healthy and while on the job with the Salinger’s he has realized he has been given the right to the care and feeding of one fantastic driven man who puts everyone else before himself and Liam is bound and determined to keep him no matter if it terrifies him. I loved this story as Amy Lane finished this series perfectly with Josh and Liam’s story taking you on an emotional rollercoaster while keeping the threads from the rest of the crew supporting and loving each other that any family would do when they are needed the most. I am so sad this is the end but so glad I can revisit anytime I need adventures and art history. Perfection.
This is one of my favorite series by Amy Lane and it was nice to see everything get wrapped up in a satisfying way. The plot revolves around finally bringing down Kadjic, the villain whose name pops up many times during the series. You will definitely want to read the prior books in the series to get the most enjoyment out of this installment. The whole crew is involved in this final caper and it was great to see everyone play their part and get their moment to shine. Although this is Josh and Liam's book, you see them fall in love through prior books, so this story focuses on them finally getting to be together as a couple. It is very sweet. Not so sweet are Josh's recovery and the things that go wrong during the caper, but our crew pulls together and pulls through as always. A great finale to this fun series, with some touching scenes between Josh and his found family.
I’m frustrated that Josh being weak was still a major plot point. I wanted him to be more recovered for this story so that at least one worry would have been avoided.
That big (unbelievable and impossible) rescue at the end bothered me, because why would the one guy with a knife wound in his ribs be assigned something so physically demanding when there were three others that were as strong or stronger and without that impairment? If you want Liam on that for plot reasons, then give one of the others the knife wound!
I love the strong found family elements that run through this series, and that’s why I stuck with it. However I really don’t handle danger and suspense well anymore, so a lot of the events in these books was stressful reading for me.
I am glad that the major villain has finally been defeated and everyone is ready for their happy ever after!
The final book!! I can't believe it. This might actually be my favourite book after book 1 (the first couple in a series always holds a special place in my heart). Overall, the Long Con series has probably been the one that has been hardest for me to get into. But I really loved this final book. I didn't reread the other books before reading this one, but Amy made it incredibly easy to get back into it.
My favourite thing about it was probably that we got a POV from pretty much all our favourite MCs from the other books, so you can fall in love with the whole group again. But Liam and Josh finally getting together? Absolutely wonderful. This is the conclusion we've all been waiting for, and I don't think Amy could have done it any better.
FINALLY we get Josh and Liam’s story! It was a nice wrap-up of the Big Bad Guy plot and everyone in the crew has someone to cuddle. I did wish for a little more time with just our MCs, but part of the urgency of the plot is the time-crunch, and it takes the whole crew to make it succeed. I feel like there’s more to learn about Liam. And/or his family! I was disappointed not to see the family breakfast scene. There’s a great build-up to it, and then it’s days later and we get a little summary of it! Why?? But overall I enjoyed the book and didn’t want to put it down!
This book wraps up the Long Con Series, even though I want to see them in other books. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I enjoyed every tense moment. This book as long been anticipated as it is Josh's story. He is the heart of the Long Con books and to see his growth from the first book, to him finding his love, it was great. All the characters in this series are wonderful and it was great to see them back on the page with this big job to end all jobs.
A satisfying conclusion to the series that still leaves you wanting more. It has both tiny intimate moments and really big splashy theatrics. I think one of the best things about it is that it is both magical and real to life. One of the main characters isn't a superhero coming to save the day and in fact needs the help of the entire found family/community that has developed over the series. And because they need everybody to contribute their peace we also get little call backs to each individual and why they fit in this lovely community.
All I can say is if you didn't need a spreadsheet to stay on top of the characters in this series... you have a better brain than me! 😭🤦♀️🤣
Even though this was Josh and Liam's story, it was really just a lot of loose ends being tied up into a nice "happy, happy, joy, joy" finish... which worked VERY well for me!
Sad to see this series end, but it had to end sometime, I guess. Very rarely do I find myself giving every book in a series 5-stars, but I had no problem doing exactly that with this one! 🥰
This was so bittersweet. Knowing it will be 'the end' more or less, of this series. I say more or less because if you know Amy at all, she may sneak some stuff in here and there. Seeing Josh finally get his HEA was definitely finally worth it all. Seeing how far all of them have come has been even more interesting. It was so good seeing everyone again. I loved each of the....troubles they all got it.and as with any good Amy book, there was laughter and tears. Definitely recommend getting this series if you haven't!
Rating 4.5 This is the seventh and final book in the Long Con series. This was the perfect ending for this series. I have been waiting for Josh’s story for a while and it was perfect. The author tackles a Cancer in the young in this series and did it in such a wonderful way. The characters were wonderful and so lovely to see all the characters in the series. The pace was spot on. I am sorry this series is over as it was such a fun series.
First and foremost, this is a heist found-family book with a bit of romance. If you come reading this book expecting a full romance arc, you'll be disappointed.
Me, however, I am amazed by how good this book is as the finale of this series. Getting Liam's and Josh's POV after teasing about them for over six books was worth the wait. I also appreciated how Josh's cancer recovery wasn't erased with miracle magic.
Fans of the Long Con series have been anxiously waiting for Josh’s story and it’s finally arrived with several bangs, jumps, crashes and fights. This is s thrill ride of a story that will keep you glued to the pages ready for the next surprising twist. Liam is so perfect for Josh and fits into the crew like a glove.
Josh is the heart of this family but it comes at a cost. Namely, the face he shows the world is a facade hiding his pain and anguish. Liam has also had his share of pain. They finally stop pushing one another away and also help protect their separate families.
One last rollercoaster ride and it's a doozy. Watching Josh get his happy ending with Liam was a perfect close to this highly entertaining series. I was up all night because I couldn't put it down.
Finally! Josh and Liam get their story and it was everything I wanted. I loved how the whole family rallied around to take down an enemy. Liam’s family was adorable. And watching Liam finding his place next to Josh and with the family was so sweet.
Ok, this is a hard review to write without so many spoilers. For all the agony Josh has gone through in the series, his story had to be the last and had to be wonderful. He and Liam are both so deserving of their hard fought HEA. There is no more pushing away, no more at arm's length. Our MC's hit the ground together, working with their family to finally get justice for all of them. It has truly played over all seven books (not a standalone). Lane, not only gives us Josh and Liam's POV's, but so many of our favorites'. All these POV's does not overwhelm our sweeties' narrative but rather it truly makes this book, this series a wonderful tapestry colored with threads of love, sorrow, joy, success, failure, tenderness, toughness, scars, and healings. Josh and Liam's saga is the perfect way to knot off the work.
P.S. Mmm, our dear Amy, there are two teeny, tiny plot threads I would really like to see how they are finished...
