Random, increasing violence plagues the town. People have gone missing. Bodies are piling up. Paranormal investigator Eddie McCloskey can’t trust anyone.
Something inexplicable is happening in this edge-of-your–seat supernatural thriller, which starts with suspense, sneaks in a few chills, moves on to thrills, and ends in a melee of outright screaming horror.
A few highlights: The man's daughter isn't possessed. But Eddie can't tell him that. The people aren't actually missing. They're hiding. But Eddie can't tell the cops that. And Eddie’s got a personal issue: He’s forced to work with someone from his past--an extremely dangerous psychic he never wants to see again.
He's in way over his head. But he sure, can't tell that to the deep-cover team of federal agents that pepper the landscape.
Well fellow readers, the addiction continues. There is no hope for rehabilitation, for I CAN NOT and WILL NOT stop loving these paranormal books. Why? Well where to begin?! It could be for the fact that every book I read in this series just keeps getting bloodier and scarier. Call me “Miss Morbid”, but I LOVE IT. Or it could be that after reading each story I put my Kindle down in pure awe and say “WHAT THE ACTUAL F***”. This series will absolutely make you question your own sanity for why you choose to read about thousands of bodies piling up and people just killing each other, and I’m sure your parents or friends will want to stage an intervention on you: “Because sweetie, were just a little worried about how you’ve been choosing to spend your time lately”. But not to worry, you’re not the only one reading these eerily amazing books...and if you’re not reading them, SHAME ON YOU.
Eddie McCloskey has just taken on a new job in Oregon to find Morgan Turners daughter Megan, twenty-six, who has disappeared. Mr. Turner explains to Eddie that Megan had started fainting all the time before she vanished, and that she had a government job that she did not discuss with him. As Eddie starts to look for clues around town, he starts to find that many other people are disappearing and that others are starting to act strange and attack one another. Once Eddie starts to work with the same team of federal agents that Megan was working with, they conclude that the town is suffering from Mass Psychogenic Illness (MPI). Though they do not know HOW the town is being affected, they do know this: the affected are divided between two groups – “The Knives Vs. The Guns”, the group that wields that knives are murderous and blood thirsty and the group that carries the guns are less violent but will kill “The Knives” if needed. The story turns into a crazed war between the two groups, and Eddie and the team of federal agents are caught in the middle of it. To make the job even more dangerous, Eddie finds that the federal agents have been receiving help from one very questionable character: Eamon Moriarty.
There is so much going on in this book, I have no idea how to get to it all without spoiling the entire story. So far, I think this fourth book in The Unearthed series is definitely the one you want to pay attention to the most. This installment surrounds MPI (Mass Psychogenic Illness), which is when a group of people start suddenly acting strangely or getting sick all at once with no physical or environmental explanation. Due to MPI not having a solid reason for its occurrence, this book can make the reader wonder why they’re left not really knowing the reason behind everything that happened. Basically, it is very hard to know what is going to happen in this book. I was constantly baffled about how the story went, and I can honestly say that I didn’t know how anything was going to turn out (for a suspense story, that’s a PLUS). Some things in the story were answered kind of vaguely and could have been explained more, but due to there being so much going on in this read…it seems to work out okay. On a more exciting note, EAMON IS BACK!! Oh, how I have been longing for this to happen! But of course, in classic Evan Ronan style, he is back in the most RANDOM way ever. He’s HELPING the federal agents. Yes, you read that correctly. Not only is Eddie dealing with an extremely dangerous and time sensitive job, but now he has to work with the insane kid hat killed his brother. But Eamon plays a pretty interesting part in this book by using his ability to psychically link himself to a place by pain, which makes things exciting. There were some very imaginative scenarios in this read that make it unique, the reason for fainting and the illusive mentioning to “The man who laughs”. Some of the humor in this book was lost on me, which was disappointing because I loved the sarcasm and witty remarks that Eddie made in The Accused and The Damned.
The Hysteria has proven to be another exciting and wonderful read by Evan Ronan, and I recommend this series completely! Not only is each book in this series a little different, but some are more suspenseful, mysterious, paranormal, or gory than the rest. Give it a try if you haven’t already, you will not be disappointed!
The fourth book in the series and still going strong! This series still manages to make my jaw drop from all the twists and turns. I spent the whole time trying to figure out what the heck was going on with these crazy people.
Eddie gets called to find a missing girl that her father believes to be possessed. Shortly after arriving Eddie realizes this is his most dangerous job yet. He is being followed, attacked, knocked out, abducted, pretty much every bad situation you can think of is happening to him. Without knowing who can be trusted and who can't, it becomes an Us or Them fight. Which are the good guys and which are the bad guys? The lines are blurred and everyone is fighting to survive.
Eamon makes a reappearance but I saw that coming with the ending of The Accused and the Damned. He claimed he changed but I still spent a while not trusting him, once a murderer alway a murderer and besides him there were a lot of other characters to not like in this one. Like Manetti, she was hella annoying...in fact pretty much everyone on that whole team annoyed me. Just because they annoyed me doesn't mean they are "bad guys" though. I guess I just never know who to trust in this series because anyone can end up being the villain.
Eddie is still great and still maturing before my eyes. He didn't even kiss Melanie back when she kissed him and that probably good since the girl was crazy! I wish he would visit Stan and Moria instead of saying he will in every book. I have a best friend that lives a few hours away and we see each other more than Stan and Eddie.
The only problem with this book was I didn't know who to trust. I was being told to trust the psycho murderer and the feds that sprung him from his cell but I really didn't want to. I also didn't trust anyone that lived in the Turner household because they were all insane, especially all the girls. Strongbow was a suspicious character as well, so that pretty much meant everyone was. I was glad my suspicions were right with this one, the people I thought were bad ended up being bad, if you can call it that.
Eddie had way too many close calls in this book, he was constantly getting attacked by a knife wielding maniac. Since he is uncomfortable around knives it made me a little worried. I knew he was going to be affected by the M.P.I though with his fear of knives, I knew it was only a matter of time.
It did take me a little longer to get into this book but once I did I breezed through it almost instantly. The only problem with a good book is it's not long enough, or however that saying goes. I still really enjoyed this book but now I'm sad because I have to wait to see what happens next.
Another great Eddie adventure. Eddie impresses me more and more in each book in this series. I read this book from star to finish yesterday. I tried to put it down a few times but was soon at it again. On to the next one.
What the hell did I just read. This was strange and I was confused for the first half of it. When did Eddie become more than just a ghost hunter and become more of a paranormal specialist? And why would he agree to find a missing daughter without knowing anything else about the case? Not that that would have helped in any way but just the straight up agreement to take the case was weird. I guess the thing I had the hardest time with in the book was the jump between what Mass Psychogenic Illness actually is to how suddenly we have people compelled to kill each other. And suddenly they can recognize each other on sight and hundreds to thousands are dying and no one has noticed a pattern before now. I will allow that the story was entertaining and it wrapped up fairly well, with the exception that we have no idea how Quick's part ended. This one was just out of left field. Also, why does Eddie have to imagine getting into bed with every woman he meets.

Eddie is again on the case, as he is hired by a desperate father whose daughter is missing and who he believes is possessed!! As he investigates the case gets stranger, as he finds the father has manipulated him, secret agencies are on the scene and they are working with the man that killed his brother. Evan continues to grow the series, with each book taking on a new stance, rather than just ghost hunting.
Terror is definitely part of this story. Finding out what causes the changes in attitude and thinking in the people in this story is a definite must. I could not put the book down. I had to learn all I could about what was going on. You will have to finish this book to learn the ending in a short time. There is just no other way!! Happy reading!
For a book that is totally implausible, it wasn't awful. One group of hysterics who love knives and are phobic about guns. Another group just the opposite and they're programmed to kill off each other. No, it didn't make sense to me either, but i did like some of the characters enough to read the whole book to see what happened to them.
I got locked into this book while it was only a little weird. Then all hell started breaking loose. At that point, it was really strange, but I'd read too much to quit, and what was causing all of this too happen? Read it yourself. See if you have the same reaction.
Another fun read by Evan Ronan. He outdid himself with this one. In the first 3 books in the Eddie McCloskey series I had figured out early on who did what or who was doing what but not the how or why exactly and those unanswered questions had me hanging to see how those questions would be answered. But this book in the series blind sided me because I had no idea what was going on from start to finish. Somethings were made clear and others are still a mystery and I'm okay with that. The ride was certainly not smooth but certainly a roller coaster of fun.
Eddie is hired to find a missing person and in usual form Eddie gets so much more than what he was hired to do. From a simple missing persons case it blows up into getting tangled with the feds and a bunch of crazy towns folks and then finally having Eddie caught up in the madness that is MPI. But in like top form Eddie doesn't back down or run away but stands and fight.
Eddie's charm is that he's the every day guy who doesn't look to be impressive on the surface but as always, like a dark horse, he is so much more. It's the more that helps him get through the worse, if not a little battered and beaten, and become the survivor that we have come to love.
Ronan writes a likable character in Eddie without it feeling forced and even though his protagonist seems to always find himself in some unbelievable circumstances the character and the stories work. This book was a far stretch compared to the first 3 books but it had me hooked all the way.
If a reader is looking for a a little mystery, a bit of supernatural, and a likable every day guy character... then the Eddie McCloskey series should be placed on their reading list.
Excellent editing, more of an action story then previous in the series. I wish the ending was more explained though I have my theories. No paranormal in this book, I miss that. Great editing and character building. Trust your gut like the protagonist, Eddie and enjoy the ride.
I've read all the Eddie McCloskey books so far and this is my fave!!!! Eddie has come a long, long way since Book 1. Can't wait to see what he gets into next. (To find Eamon Moriarty I hope!)
