Disciple: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study: Study Manual

Rate this book
DISCIPLE is a program of disciplined Bible study aimed at developing strong Christian leaders.

The
study gives the Old and New Testaments equal time, emphasizing the
wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God. DISCIPLE draws upon the
work of scholars, the personal Bible reading and study of the
participant, and dynamic group discussion to aid understanding of the
Bible.

The first study in the program is DISCIPLE: BECOMING
DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY, a thirty-four week overview of the entire
Bible.

Commitment and Time Involved

Three
and one-half to four hours of independent study each week (40 minutes
daily for leaders and 30 minutes daily for group members) in preparation
for weekly group meetings.

Attendance at weekly 2.5 hour meetings.

Study Manual

Each
member of the group needs a study manual and a Bible. The Bible is the
text for the study and the study manual will guide group members in
their study and preparation for the weekly group session. The study
manual also includes suggestions for individual and study-related
activities. Space is provided for taking notes while reading Scripture,
for recording thoughts and questions arising out of daily study, and for
notes during the weekly group session.

The titles of the
sessions along with theme words and theme verses, and major persons,
events, and topics will set the sequence of the biblical story in the
minds of the participants. The principal Scripture for each session
follows the chronological movement of the biblical story.

My journey through Disciple has been challenging, enlightening, and I have loved getting to know the other ladies. It has been a place of support, not feeling judged, and prayer. I felt like we were able to be honest and open about what we were dealing with and receive love and positive advice or affirmation that they’d been through and can look back and see God work through that situation.

I loved learning more about God’s character, and seeing the overarching messages of the bible. His redemptive plan from the beginning to the end. How God had a plan from creation through the end of this earth, that will one day usher in his heavenly kingdom. The Old Testament shows us about the law, God’s heart for relationship, and how time after time, he pursues us, builds us up, and provides for us. The law shows that we are unable to keep our end of the old covenant, but proves God Faithful. The New Covenant shows just how much he was willing to give in order to deal with our sins and have an unhindered relationship for eternity, with the only thing on our part being believing and accepting. It also makes me so grateful for the simplicity.

Seeing how God again and again uses imperfect people to help accomplish his perfect plan has been encouraging. From Moses, David, Daniel, Rahab, the disciples and Paul, they are all imperfect people. But they were willing, and God made his power perfect through their weakness. He forgives over and over, proving his mercy and unfailing love. I also saw that he will lay a smack down when its needed, just like an earthly parent. He uses pain and suffering to teach us, mold us, and reveal himself and his love.

The low point would be seeing some of the ladies drop out, especially the ones who had already put so much time and effort into it. It has also been eye opening just how much God uses suffering, trials and knowing that it is certain. But each time, in the bible seeing that it had a purpose, that he indeed uses all things for his glory, and that what man may intend for evil, he can use it for good. The proof of refinement, and others coming to a knowledge of God.

It is so worth the at time tremendous amount of work, and sacrificing some things to make time for God and reading His word intensely. I have learned a lot and I have experienced life with the other members, seeing prayers answers, and being a part of growing as a body of Christ. How denominations are set aside, and seeing the perspective and insights that ladies from different churches and walks of life will devote themselves to learning and sharing.

Intense study. Our study called it our baby since it is 34 weeks, and since all of us are moms, if school is cancelled, or if we are going on vacation, then we ended up being more like 40-41 weeks.
My knowledge of the bible is so enhanced. It was A LOT of work, and there were times that I wanted to quit, but we formed a bond with our group of ladies, and it was nice to get other views on the scripture we read. I want to take Disciple 2 but don't know when that will happen.
I learned so much about God, and about his pursuit of us regardless of what we've done, and no matter how much we try to hide. No matter how many times we mess up, he loves us and he wants to be in relationship with us.
It was said once that this book can be summed up in a word: LOVE.

I LOVE Disciple Bible Study! I've been leading a Disciple Bible study of some sort every year for the last 20 years. It never gets old. It never ceases to challenge me. God always has something to say to me through this Bible study that delivers on its design to teach for transformation, not just information.
That being said, the curriculum is 30 years old, and it is showing its age. If the church would come up with something different that delivers the same transformation power I would use it. But it hasn't. So I will continue to teach Disciple until they do.

In 2017 Charles and I took a Disciple Bible Study Part I class taught by Rev. Mark Watson. It was an excellent class and lots of reading and homework.

We decided to wait to take Part II another year.

Life is funny that way. We left the church in 2020 when we moved to OKC and then the pandemic hit and we’ve only been to church a few times since then. Now it’s August 2023.

Its work. Glorious God given work. As a mom of three who works part time, I still have a hard time getting all my "homework" in without being distracted by the everyday stuff. However, if you've ever wanted to delve deeper into scripture but get bored by reading cover to cover or certain books at a time, this is the study for you. It breaks it down into themes. A few weeks you may only read from one or two books, but most weeks quite a few sections of different books are included all based on the same theme. Like worship, suffering, hope, to name a few. I'm a layperson youth leader and this has helped greatly when my youth are asking me about scripture.

Absolute best Bible Study I have ever read and participated in. I admit I have never read the Bible cover to cover, even though I have read a LOT of it in bits and pieces over the years. If you want to truly read and deeply study the Bible, then this study is for you. By the time you finish you have read and thoroughly studied and discussed around 80% of the Bible. This has truly been a life-changing experience. Stephanie and I did this study together and we both feel we have grown so much in our faith and our walk with Jesus and our journey towards God. We really feel like we are Becoming Disciples.

I use this study program at church to help lead a Bible study. It's comprehensive - you read about 70% of the Bible in 34 weeks. Highly recommend this study for anyone wanting a good introduction to reading, studying, and understanding Scripture.

This is my second time through this book and study. With different experiences "under my belt", the Holy Spirit is revealing new and different things to me each week. So glad I have this chance to do it again.

My husband and I did this as a 34 week study at our church. The overview we got of the Bible from beginning to end was amazing. God's plan flows in this book as you get an opportunity to study all of His Word. This was definitely worth the investment in our time!

Life-changing, as they say. Join a group; don't just read it alone. This program has stayed with me for years.

Let's you see how the Old & New Testaments are inter-connected. Great for a small group study.
