The one time I choose to be unpredictable, I find myself practically naked in a dark cabin on a ranch, face-to-face with a smirking man barely wearing a towel.
Despite his chiseled body and a wicked smile that makes following the rules feel optional, nothing happens. Why? Because I, Audrey Van, don’t know how to have fun.
I came to my friend’s cabin with my whimsy list in hand, determined to fix that. I’ve earned my doctorate and built a career with zero parking tickets and even fewer hangovers. I’ve been so good … and so boring.
This isn’t who I want to be anymore.
Brooks Dempsey is the last person who should be helping me find myself. The ridiculously hot mixed martial artist—and my brother’s nemesis—is a walking bad decision gift wrapped in broad shoulders and trouble. But who better to teach me how to flirt, defend myself, and explore other things than the man who does it best?
Soon, I want more. Not just from life, but from him.
But this recklessly electrifying thing between us was never meant to last. The bad boy never settles with the good girl, and a girl like me should know better. So, when life throws us into the ring, gloves on, will we fight together? Or will one of us throw in the towel?

Bad Boy / Good Girl Small Town MMA Fighter Brother’s Nemesis He Falls First One Bed Situation
Adriana Locke is a USA Today and Amazon Charts Bestselling author with a knack for writing swoony, unforgettable contemporary romances. At nineteen, she traded her small-town roots for big-city life, only to realize her heart beats for quiet mornings and cozy chaos. These days, she’s living her happily-ever-after in Ohio with Mr. Locke—her high school sweetheart—four lively sons, and two hilariously hyper Jack Russell terriers.
When she’s not penning love stories that will leave you laughing and sighing, Adriana is battling the epic quest of missing silverware, “gardening” (a.k.a. chatting with her plants), or leaving her grocery list on the counter as she heads to the store. Grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and let her books whisk you away to a world of heartwarming romance and irresistible heroes.
Oh my gosh I loved this soo much, it was fun, spicy but also very inspiring. This is one of the most well done good girl x bad boy romances I’ve ever read, because it didn’t overemphasise the fmcs “innocence” and made her out an extremely strong and intelligent character. The plot was great, I loved how they’re both city people escaping to a small town, him being an injured boxer and her being a philosophy professor trying to find herself again. I loved the whole “whimsy list” and the point of building confidence. It was pretty inspiring to me because the whole being reduced to “sweet” and the pressure of being perfect is something a lot of people can relate to, and it was written very realistically. Heck it even makes me want to start my own whimsy list. I loved the flirting, between Brooks and Audrey, it felt natural and so fun. They had insane chemistry but gosh Brooks was so damn whipped from the start, it was adorable. Like what do you mean he wanted to be near her so bad he told her to stitch up his arm even though she has zero experience??? This man was so down bad, and I loved how he was so supportive, encouraging and helped her find herself. But most importantly, how he left most of the discovery to her, and just gave her the push she needed. This book was about healing for two completely different people with totally opposite traumas and it had me crying because of the emotional impact. This truly was a 5/5 read, it was a very empowering book but also so fun and cute.
I loved this book! It was different to me as this book had a strong FMC that was courageous, and not dependent on the MMC.
Audrey and Brooks had a most unusual meeting. And, the angst just builds from there. Audrey is trying to find whom she really is, and departs in the middle of a snowstorm to her friend’s vacation house. When she gets there she is met with quite the surprise!
Will she and Brooks make a match, or will he be another check mark on her list? Is he using her because he wants to return to fighting? How clean will this end? When does a simple arrangement turn complicated?
I loved the story, setting, and character dynamics in Show Me! Adriana Locke knows how to make a girl suffer! (Poor Audrey) The only downside to me was how much overthinking Audrey does, and missing bits of information early in the book. Other than that, the book is very entertaining!
Adriana Locke’s Show Me confirms once again why Adriana is one of my favorite romance authors. Of this new series I have to say that this has become my favorite book so far. 💚
In this story we have Audrey, who is tired of being seen as the sweet girl, the one who never breaks rules. Determined to change that, she goes to her best friend's cabin for a week with a clear goal: to rediscover herself and start crossing things off her "whimsy list", that list of things she has always wanted to do but has never dared. ✅
That's where Brooks appears, an MMA fighter who comes into her life to teach her how to break the rules, to let go a little and, above all, to say what she really wants. What begins as a simple week to complete a list ends up becoming something much more intense. 🔥🌶️
And as if that wasn't enough... Brooks also turns out to be Andrew's nemesis, Audrey's older brother, which complicates things even more for both of them.
Something that always fascinates me about Adriana Locke is how, even with relatively short stories, she manages to connect us deeply with her characters. The couples always have something special, something that makes you get attached to them. ✨
Now I can only say one thing: I need Hartley's book! I really hope that's the next story Adriana tells us.
Tropes: ✨Bad Boy / Good Girl ✨Small Town ✨MMA Fighter ✨Brother’s Nemesis ✨He Falls First
Adriana always writes such bingeable books! The 312 pages flew by, especially with a storyline centered around a good girl experiencing a little insta lust and wanting to explore her wild side.
Audrey decides to step out of her comfort zone and visits her best friend’s family cabin, where she meets Brook, the reckless MMA fighter. From the very beginning, the chemistry and tension between them are undeniable.
Their relationship was really well written and gave me all the feels. I especially loved how Brook encouraged Audrey to ask for what she wanted and helped her find the confidence she’d been missing.
Overall, it was such a cute read with cozy small town vibes. A quick, enjoyable romance that was easy to get lost in.
There's just something indescribable about reading an Adriana Locke book for me. It's always so comforting.
I really loved how different Brooks and Audrey were. A complete opposites attract relationship. I loved their getaway as well, so sweet!
I was a little disappointed by parts of the storyline that didn't feel fully explored but I won't say more than that because of spoilers. Otherwise an amazing book as always and I can't wait for the next one!
I love everything about Adriana Locke's books! Particularly this one. You've got two complete opposite in characters. One more on the shy side and the other one more rugged. I love when these two personalities combined. Add in the girl squad, the emotions. Makes one heck of a book. 5 + stars
The premise of Miss Goody Two Shoes with the town’s bad boy immediately intrigued me, and it did not disappoint.
Audrey is known for being “too sweet” or “too nice,” always putting other people’s needs ahead of her own. She struggles to stand up for herself and tends to conform to what everyone expects of her. When she hits a bit of an existential crisis and decides to take time away to find her true self, she creates a “whimsy list” of things she wants to try while stepping outside of her comfort zone. Enter Brooks.
Brooks is all confidence and pushes every single one of her buttons. When he accidentally reads her list (which includes experiencing a few things she’s never allowed herself to explore… some of it of the spicy kind), he offers to help her complete it. Brooks is definitely not the settling down type and everyone knows it, and it all starts as a no-strings-attached arrangement. 😏
Watching Audrey grow throughout the story was one of my favorite parts. Their dynamic shifts from her being incredibly shy and hesitant to someone who gradually gains confidence, speaks her mind, and feels more comfortable in her own skin.
There were a few backstories that felt like they could have used a bit more closure. Nothing that took away from the overall story, just moments where I was curious to see things wrapped up a little more.
But what a deliciously steamy and addicting read! 😍
✨what to expect✨ bad boy / good girl • small town romance • MMA fighter • brother’s nemesis • he falls first • insta-lust with lots of tension • inexperienced FMC • he shows her the ropes • sexual awakening
Thank you Adriana Locke and Hambright PR for giving me an eARC. I was so hooked I finished it in two days!
I loved this book! It had everything you would want. A slow burn, good girl meets bad boy, an MMA fighter, and a bucket list!
I adored our FMC. She decides that she needs some time to herself to reflect and get to know herself without all the pressure from her parents, especially her mom, who always forces her to do things that she doesn't always enjoy. She creates a "whimsy" list of things that will take her outside of her comfort zone. She wants to bring out the bad side of her that's internally dying to be freed. She is done with being a good girl. She goes to her friend's cabin in the middle of nowhere, Tennessee, to live off the grid for a few months.
In comes Brooks. He is an MMA fighter who has been suspended from fighting after someone attempted to sabotage his career. He is on a break, returning to his hometown to await his return to work. He is spending some time with his mom when, upon a chance encounter, which was hilarious by the way, he stumbles into our FMC. Once he finds out about her list, he enlists himself to help. His mission is to cross off every item from said list.
I adored these two together. They have this comfortable banter between them and are really friends at first. Told in dual POV, I loved getting a glimpse at how each of these characters sees themselves as well as each other.
The inner dialogue of these two kept me cracking up. This was my first book by this author, but now I am interested in seeing what else she has written. Definitely a 5-star read for me!
This is the kind of romance book I crave. Electric chemistry and a delicious build up of tension between Brooks and Audrey. From the moment they meet, they have a spark that's impossible to ignore. I love both main characters, Audrey because even though she seems a little awkward, she still has a backbone, and Brooks because he has a ton of confidence that doesn't come across as too cocky. He helps her find her own confidence. So when the 3rd act break up happens, she handles it much better than she probably would've before they met.
My reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is because I didn't like that Brooks never tells Audrey about why his license was suspended, and because he didn't tell her how her brother was involved. He has a reason for not telling her about her brother and while I understand it, I feel like it's important information she should have. Especially if they will all be in each other's lives. As far as not telling her about the suspension, it's not really that important, but it does tie into the whole thing with Audrey's brother, and it's part of the reason Brooks walks away. So while I appreciate what Brooks does to fix what he broke, I still feel like he should've told her everything.
Overall I really liked the book. I loved Brooks and Audrey together and how naturally it felt for them to fall in love.
Thank you to the author for the ARC! I didn’t get to this one before release since I was approved only a couple days beforehand and already deep into other reads, but I was excited to jump back into this interconnected friend group.
I absolutely loved book two (Try Me) in this series, so I was really looking forward to Audrey’s story.
This series follows a group of girlfriends navigating life, chaos, and love together, and I always enjoy the friendship dynamic Adriana Locke creates.
Audrey is a philosophy professor going through a bit of an existential crisis — bored, restless, and questioning the direction of her life. Her solution? The Whimsy List — a list designed to push her outside her comfort zone and bring a little adventure back into her life.
Enter Brooks — a professional fighter on sabbatical after an injury and accusations that his last fight was rigged. He’s very much the classic bad boy to Audrey’s good girl, which isn’t usually my favorite trope because it can feel cliché… but I was curious to see if this one would change my mind.
Overall, this one was fun and definitely spicy, but it didn’t hook me the same way Try Me did. I didn’t feel quite as connected to the characters or storyline, which made the book a little more forgettable for me.
Still an enjoyable read if you like: • good girl x bad boy • interconnected friend groups • opposites attract • spicy contemporary romance
Audrey Van is smart, educated, professional, sweet, a little naïve, and a good girl. She leaves city life behind for a cabin in the country on her friend’s ranch to contemplate her life. And at the heart of all her pondering is really one desire.
It's the desire to stop worrying about pleasing others and talk a walk on the naughty side. And MMA fighter Brooks Dempsey may be just the guy to take that walk with Auddie. But no amount of chemistry, compatibility, or heart connection can stop outside forces that want to keep them apart.
I love everything about this one, from the enviable bond between friends to the charming small town that comes vividly alive, it all makes this one is such a pleasure to read. The secondary characters are just as complex, colorful and endearing as the main characters, and the overly emotive tabby cat, Otis steals the show.
With undeniable chemistry and laugh-out-loud moments, the perfect placement of these elements is just as successful as the emotional component. Sweet, humorous, poignant and heartfelt, this is one you definitely don’t want to miss.
After picking up the first book in this series, Play Me, and meeting this incredible group of girls, I’ve been dying for Audrey’s story—and let me just say, I loved every minute of it.
Audrey was such a relatable character for me in so many ways. Her journey really resonated, and she even inspired me to make my own Whimsy List. I think so many readers will connect with her story and the way she navigates her fears, hopes, and dreams. Watching her finally get her happily ever after was such a rewarding experience.
Adriana Locke did an incredible job bringing these characters to life. She shows their vulnerabilities and insecurities in such a real and honest way that even if you don’t personally relate, I guarantee you know someone who will.
I’ve absolutely loved this series and getting to watch each of these girls find their true love. But I have one question left… will we eventually see Hartley get his happily ever after too? 👀
This is a quick, steamy romance between Brooks and Audrey. They meet in a hilarious, unexpected way that neither one of them will ever forget. He's an MMA fighter currently injured and she's a PhD professor of Philosophy. Astrid and Gianna from the first two books in this series are her best friends. It is good to see them interact with Audrey in this book.
The plot is fine, but things move so quickly for them. I had a difficult time with how fast. I couldn't believe I was at almost 80% of the book and how very little they knew each other. A lot of spicy times together (and the spice is hot) but other than that I just didn't see how they had any connection.
Thank you to the author for an advanced readers copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thanks to @authoradiranalocke for the gifted copy!
My Thoughts: As usual with Adriana's books, I binged this one in just a few days. I love the complete opposite ways in which Brooks and Audrey are, and how perfect they are for one another. Brooks challenged Audrey to push past her comfort zone and help her gain confidence in the challenging situations. Though Brooks had no thoughts of having a girlfriend, he had some of the swooniest moments I've read.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one. It was a quick and cute read that had me feeling all the feels.
What You'll Find: 🎭 Bad Boy / Good Girl 🏘️ Small Town Romance 🥊 MMA Fighter 👹 Brother's Nemesis 😍 He Falls First 🛏️ One Bed Situation
Another great book in the Play me series! The chemistry with these two was undeniable right away but they had a lot of work cut out for them on both sides. I loved the whimsy list and I loved how Brooks was all about helping Audrey cross things off and had a great time doing it. I loved the banter and the pining. The Groveling during the 3rd act was fantastic. Can't wait to see what Adriana Locke writes next!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily
Oh these trips in this book are the best!!! What else could be better than a bad boy/ good girl in a small town romance? Add in the brother’s nemesis and the one bed situation and you have a spontaneous combustion of a story. Predictable and safe Audrey enlists Brooks to teach her how to be spontaneous and teach her to defend herself with some MMA training. He is the ultimate bad boy gift wrapped in ALL the red flags.
As the story goes, good girl falls for the bad boy!!!! I loved this book. All of us have a little love for a bad boy and Brooks is one of the best!!!! You will love it.
Review in exchange for advance copy given by author-
I love Audrey’s Whimsy List and I think I need one for myself. I relate to Audrey so much and loved her journey of finding herself. We should all feel comfortable and confident with ourselves!
Brooks is perfect! No notes. The way he takes care of his mom, helps Audrey grow, and is the perfect blend of bad boy and good boy. I need to find a man like him.
This book was so enjoyable. Brooks was such a likable character and a great MMC. Audrey really comes more into herself throughout this story. I loved the nickname Brooks gives her. They just work, and make such good pair. They make each other better and I was so here for that throughout the story. I do feel like they let Aubrey’s brother off easy and that disappointed me. He was a jerk and deserved to have his world implode. I recommend this book. Told in dual POV.
Ok seriously. This series was SO good! And o freaking adored every word of Audrey just as I expected. She was sweet (I know, the dreaded word), funny, witty and loved when she found her fire. The MMC wasn’t who I guessed it would be, BUT dang did Brooks win me over! They were so, so good together. I loved them individually and together as a couple. It was cute, swoony, funny and spicy! If you want a giddy smile from one page, only to Dan yourself the next page… read this! Adriana, perfection.
Audrey and Brooks had me laughing out loud from the 1st couple chapters. The spice in this book is off the charts!! The drama, spice, and humor had me engaged from beginning to end! Loved seeing Audrey and Brooks get their happily ever after!! ❤️
I absolutely loved Audrey and Brooks’s love story! Show Me by Adriana Locke; it is an incredible love at first sight/he falls first love story. It is the third book in her Play Me series. Adriana Locke continues to prove that she is an amazing storyteller, and a one click must read author for me. I was hooked from the first few pages, it was impossible to put Show Me down, and I loved every moment on every page. Show Me was one of the most enjoyable books that I have read recently. I love that Adriana Locke continues to write the books that I love to read. Who does not love hot sexy men, strong females, loving families, and friends, who always support one another? Show Me is a dared to date love story and is filled with heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. Show Me is the story of Brooks Dempsey, former middle-weight MMA champion and Audrey “Auddie” Van, PhD in Philosophy who teaches a couple of online philosophy courses online at Montague College. Audrey and Brooks meet when Audrey arrives at her best friend Astrid and Gray’s cabin in Sugar Creek during a winter storm and surprises Brooks as he exits the bathroom after taking a shower. Auddie heads to Sugar Creek to be alone after her last date has left her shaken. Brooks is in Sugar Creek recovering from a torn rotator cuff, waiting to be reinstated into the NAFL. Auddie and Brooks keep running into each other around Sugar Creek. Brooks gets injured on barbed wire, and asks Auddie to stitch him up. He starts calling her “Doc.” While in the cabin after Auddie stitches Brooks’s wound, Brooks accidentally wakes Auddie’s laptop revealing her “Whimsy List.” I love Auddie’s Whimsy List, some are heartbreaking. Brooks volunteers to help Auddie cross off the remaining items on her list. Conversation between Audrey and Brooks flows so easily, from their bickering to playful banter and innuendos between them. Both Audrey and Brooks share secrets with one another that they have not shared with anyone before. Audrey shares about her dating history and her relationship with her parents, while Brooks shares about his relationship with his late father and what happened the night he died when Brooks was seventeen. Brooks realizes that Audrey’s brother, Andrew (Drew) is his bitter enemy, but does not disclose this to her. Audrey suffers from insecurities because of her upbringing and is not sure that she can trust any man. I love the chemistry between Audrey and Brooks and how it changes after their getaway that Brooks planned for them. I love all the little things that Brooks does for Auddie during their getaway. As Audrey and Brooks spend time together things quickly change between them, neither is willing to admit their true feelings for one another. I love all the heart-to-heart conversations that take place in Show Me, especially the one between Audrey and Brooks. A heartbreaking plot twist changes everything between Audrey, and Brooks and puts their relationship in jeopardy when Brooks reveals to Audrey that he does not see a future with her. This leaves Auddie heartbroken. While apart from Brooks, Auddie realizes she has been wrong about her mother’s feelings for her. I love everything that Brooks does to get back together with Doc and take control of his life and his future, After a heart-to-heart with Hartley Adler, Gray’s brother and owner of Blackbird Ranch. This leads to Brooks surprising Auddie in Boston, and attending her father’s birthday party after defining their relationship. I love that they finally admit their feelings for one another. I love that both Auddie and Brooks realize that they must let go of the past. My favorite part is how Brooks helps Audrey cross off items on her Whimsy List. I loved that Show Me is more than just a romance, there are issues that both Audrey and Brooks are facing that need to be resolved to have a life with one another. I love how the storylines get so beautifully resolved. I love all the changes that they are willing to make to have a life with one another. I love the ending of their love story it is the perfect ending to their love story. My favorite part are the epilogues that are told from Audrey’s perspective. The first one is two months later, where Audrey crosses off the last item off her Whimsy List and they declare their love for one another. The second epilogue is Audrey’s updated Whimsy List. I love the changes that she made to the updated list. I really enjoy how the book is told in the first person from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting the insight and feelings from the different characters. I love how Adriana Locke always manages to create the "perfect" heroine, who is a strong, sassy woman on her own, to balance out the sexy, swoon worthy man. Adriana Locke continues to deliver all that and so much more. Show Me is filled with poignant and bittersweet moments as well as plot twists and surprises that I have come to love and expect in an Adriana Locke love story. I especially love all the moments that make me laugh. I love the characters and the family dynamic in Show Me, the characters feel like family and friends. I enjoyed all the interactions between Brooks, Gray, and Hartley and Audrey’s relationship with her friends Astrid and Gianna and their group chat, especially after her getaway with Brooks, it feels like real family love and makes me laugh at their teasing. I loved catching up with Astrid, Gray, Gianna, and Drake. I loved all the characters in Show Me, and I am hoping there are more books with these characters. Who does not love family and friends that always have each other’s backs? I thoroughly enjoyed Show Me, who does not love an opposites attract/he falls first love story. Highly recommend this incredible love. Received an advanced readers copy from the author.
(I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you to Hambright PR and Adriana Locke!)

SHOW ME by Adriana Locke is a spicy, fast-paced, insta-lust novel following the composed good girl Audrey Van and bad-boy fighter Brooks Dempsey as they fight for their love story to be accepted not only by the people around them, but also by themselves. Audrey, with a doctorate, pristine image, and loads of expectations, has finally decided to unleash her inner bad girl through her 'whimsy list', and who better to help than Brooks Dempsey? Brooks has his own set of issues but is enamored by Audrey, not realizing her connection to his enemy.
AUDREY was by far my favorite character because of how clearly I could resonate with her. Her chapters were insightful and full of emotion, but also resilience and courage. Locke did a fantastic job conveying Audrey's reluctance to put herself publicly, and I was able to connect with her struggling feelings towards Brooks. I also loved how Audrey fought against the 'sweet, innocent' persona that everyone, including Brooks, thought about her. Those words annoyed me just as much as they annoyed her, so I loved seeing her fight against it!
However, I will say that Audrey came off as a little naive to me, something that is even alluded by Brooks. Her awkward character was endearing, but her naivety really showed at the climax of the book. I felt like if this characteristic showed in the beginning of the book, it would make sense, but emphasizing Audrey's naivety so far into the book felt like a snub to her character arc.
BROOKS oh Brooks, what can I say about him 😍This man was loyal, kind, funny and supportive without question! The way this man loves Audrey is unparalleled! He risked his career for her and encouraged her to accept her wants and sexuality while helping her explore the dynamic of being sexually pleased. I was swooning when Brooks said that their sexual experiences were to be done on HER terms 🥵The way he was obsessed with Audrey while appreciating her intelligence was beautifully written, and the banter between them was seamless! He put in the effort for her and it really paid off. Bonus points for him also being a gentleman with his mother! The snippets we saw of their relationship was beautiful!
My biggest pet peeve about Brooks is not about his character, but rather, his backstory, which I found muddled and confusing. Why did his mother stay with his father? Who attacked him? Why did they attack him? What was Andrew's issue with Brooks? More importantly, why didn't Brooks tell Audrey about the blackmailing, considering it hit close to home? The vagueness of Brooks' backstory made it difficult for me to understand his character and motivations, as well as his character development.
THE PLOT I admit, I found to be a bit slow-paced, and many of the middle chapters were filled with scenes that didn't add much to Brooks and Audrey's relationship. I found myself skimming pages because I wanted to see them together, though I liked that Locke took the time to develop their relationship. What I found a little confusing was that this book was marketed as Audrey learning and exploring her sexual endeavors, but there are only maybe a few chapters at the end of her doing so. Not only that, but in many of the chapters she's just talking to her friends or having introspective conversations with herself about her family
Additionally, in relation to Audrey's development, I didn't really find any reason for her introspective thoughts about her parents at the end of the story. Like, for most of the book she's going back and forth between complaining and saying that they're amazing, but then at the end suddenly they're good? And she understands their reasons? Likewise with Lewis Lemon...like what was his point in the story? And Andrew being who he was? I understood and actually enjoyed the conflict with Andrew, but his sudden switch of character felt too abrupt.
THE SPICE Y'all...🥵🥵🥵I cannot give this enough hot emojis because when I say that Brooks is a man you want in the bedroom...like, you WANT him. This dirty talking, gentle yet commanding man had me just prickling because his inner thoughts of Audrey? When he sat on the chair and taught her how to...well...play his flute 👀(iykyk) Gods that was amazing. I wish there were more spicy scenes between them because when they were together their dynamic and development molded into one! I kind of wish now we had a scene in the fighting ring...
Overall, I enjoyed this book! Brooks and Audrey really had me cheering for them, and their characterization as individuals and a couple are what I really liked the most in the book! I can totally imagine Brooks teaching his and Audrey's children how to fight! This is absolutely going on my shelf!
Audrey Van is really – really – tired of being thought of as only kind and sweet. But it’s true; there’s nothing special about her. She’s boring, boring, boring. At least that’s the way she thinks of herself. Yes, she’s well-educated, successful, has friends, but she’s the same unadventurous rule-follower with disappointed, disapproving parents she was at twelve. Her relationships with men, if that’s what you can call them (relationships or real men), have been memorable but mostly unpleasant. So after the latest humiliation she has what she calls as existential crisis and creates a daring “whimsey” list of things she challenges herself to do. Good idea, but a couple of problems – she doesn’t have experience, doesn’t know how to make most of the things on her list happen, and hasn’t a clue where to start.
Starting small is good. Off Audrey goes to Astrid and Gray’s cabin in Sugar Creek. Eat alone in public, wear a bold lipstick . . . doesn’t sound too hard. But before she can even get started on the list she gets quite a shock: someone else is already there. She’s nearly naked, drying off from being drenched in the storm – and he is naked. Well, there must be something to check off on the list after that, right?
Brooks Dempsey is Gray’s friend; an MMA fighter recovering from an injury and being investigated for something he didn’t do. While waiting for the hearing he’s helping Hartley on the ranch and stopped at the cabin to shower. Harmless. Except Brooks is so handsome it should be illegal and he’s an outrageous flirt. When she finally regains after voice after staring at him, Audrey has no idea what to say anyway. A little bump to her laptop opens the screen to – wait for it – her whimsy list. Brooks gallantly volunteers to help her work through it. Oh well, what the heck. Why not? She can’t stop staring and thinking about him anyway.
Brooks and Audrey together are perfect from the start. She’s so easily embarrassed but so determined to change, so critical of herself she doesn’t begin to see what a beautiful treasure she is. Astrid reassures her that even if Brooks isn’t someone for the long term if Audrey is determined to get through that list he’s the perfect guy to trust for it. Brooks really is a good guy, working hard through his injury and desperately hoping he will be cleared of the bogus charges; his career can’t be over. His father was a violent drug addict and Brooks is going to provide everything his wonderful mother needs forever if he can. He’s not looking for anything long-term either, but he is instantly taken with Audrey and always up for a little fun. And boy, oh boy do they have fun. There’s a little current running just under the surface that feels like more, though. They are so compatible and easily work through whatever little obstacles come up. Excerpt there’s one obstacle that’s not so little. In fact, it’s huge and involves Audrey’s brother and this may be the insurmountable obstacle.
Author Adriana Locke always does it, so to say she’s done it again sounds kind of redundant, but it’s true. The men in her stories just get better and better and better; Brooks makes cinnamon roll golden retriever sound woefully inadequate. And multi-layered, complicated women with hidden strength are Locke’s specialty. Show Me is so full of sweetness and pleasure and romance but also zeroes in on these two people who have issues and emotions to overcome from their pasts, and the future is not certain.
I received an advance copy of Show Me as part of the author’s review team. It was so satisfying. Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. You’ll be ready to fight anybody and anything to make sure Audrey and Brooks realize just how perfectly they are MFEO (meant for each other, of course!). Show Me is the perfect next story in the Play Me series. Time spent with old friends we love, laser focus on two lovable characters and tender, funny, sexy, spicy moments, conflict and past trauma, and heartwarming happiness. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.
*An advance reader copy was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.*
Professor Audrey Van has decided to take a sabbatical from her life and relocate from Nashville to the small town of Sugar Creek to try to figure things out. Audrey’s always been the good girl… for her parents, to her friends, and too good for the guys that she’s dated. She’s decided all that has to change so she can find her own happily ever after, like her bestie’s Astrid (Play Me) and Gianna (Try Me)have found. Audrey’s put together a “Whimsey List” of things she wants to do to break out of her shell. Now to just let her guard down enough to accomplish the more risqué ones.
Audrey drove through a storm to Gray and Astrid’s cottage and got totally soaked getting inside. In her hast to get dry, she walks out of Astrid’s closet with fresh clothes in her hands (and not much on her body) to find a complete stranger in the bedroom in a towel. MMA Fighter and Gray’s best friend, Brooks Dempsey has been rehabbing his shoulder, after being attacked in Vegas, in his hometown of Sugar Creek. He was helping out Gray’s brother Hartley on their ranch when they got caught in the storm. Brooks let himself into Gray’s cabin to change into dry clothes before driving home, not knowing that Gray had let Astrid’s friend borrow the cabin. I’d love to be able to call this a Meet Cute, but it was more like a Meet Startle. But that didn’t mean Brooks didn’t take an immediate interest in our Audrey.
Audrey was easing herself into her list and Brooks was just always around… running into her in town, while she walked through the ranch and came upon Hartley and Brooks in the truck, in the diner. Although Gray warned him that Brooks wasn’t Audrey’s type, Brooks just couldn’t stay away. And then there was a little mishap with some chicken wire and Brooks decided that Audrey was the “Doc” (she has a PhD) to stitch him up. I know I couldn’t have done what she did. I give Audrey a lot of credit for that. That’s when Brooks came across her Whimsey List and offered to help her with some of the more intimate numbers.
Then there’s the cold hard truth that Audrey’s brother Drew, also a fighter, had it out for Brooks. He was probably behind not just the attack on him that left him hurt, but for other things that made him lose his fighting license and now will be the one who has the final say on whether Brooks will be getting it back. When Brooks propositioned Audrey to help her, all he asked for was for her to put in a good word about him with her brother. Let’s just say that the phone call between the siblings was the first time Drew’s attitude was ever turned on Audrey.
Brooks tried to be a gentleman and take things slow, that is until Audrey had just had enough. You could feel the heat rising off the pages. Their chemistry was undeniable. Once they got going, they didn’t stop. Then Brooks fell for Audrey and Audrey fell for Brooks. Neither one said anything to the other about their feelings. I’m sure Audrey could sense it in the things that Brooks did for her and vice versa. And then out of nowhere, Brooks pulled the plug. I don’t want to spoil this book for anyone, so I’m going to stop here. But you need to see how their love story unfolds for yourself.
I’ve said this for a good long time now, but Adriana Locke has a way with words. Audrey and Brooks are swoon worthy. They may be my all-time favorite Locke couple, and I don’t say that lightly. There are so many genres in this book that make me happy ~ good girl/bad boy, he falls first, small town, sports. I had such a big smile on my face while devouring their story. We haven’t been promised that we’re going back to Sugar Creek anytime soon, but I hope one day we get Hartley’s story. In the meantime, I’m here for whatever Adriana Locke wants to write.
In my opinion, this book is the best in the series. Among the three best friends, Audrey was my favorite, and she certainly did not let me down. And for her to find happiness with Brooks? It caught me off guard. Adriana has done a fantastic job with this story, and I'm so glad Audrey has found herself at last. Who thought that she would have a happily ever after after just one week of almost completing a "whimsy" list?
Show Me is the third book in the Play Me series, which follows the story of Audrey Van, a woman seeking introspection in Sugar Creek, and Brooks Dempsey, the bad boy, MMA fighter, spending his time in his hometown while waiting for his career license to be reinstated. It explores the themes of love, vulnerability, and personal growth.
Audrey has intrigued me since meeting her in Play Me. She's uptight, but a well-known rule-follower, a "too" nice and a "too" sweet girl. However, after reading about her past in this book, all seemed clear. On the other hand, I found Brooks' character to be a troublemaker when I first met him in the first book, and I worried about the woman who would fall for his overconfident and mischievous appeal. I was subsequently both shocked and thrilled when Adriana revealed that Brooks would be Audrey's man in this novel.
Adriana has carefully combined romance, drama, humor, and emotional depth to highlight the multifaceted characters of both Brooks and Audrey.
Brooks found courage through his newfound love and protectiveness for Audrey. Determined to end all the blackmail and manipulation hurled at him and his career as a fighter, he found the courage to move on from his dark past and confront his adversary, displaying the epitome of a man who values Audrey's worth more than his career. Audrey has always strived to show her worth to everyone around her despite her struggles with self-confidence. Through Brooks' insightful words, she was able to uncover her true self, learn what she wants out of life, and break some norms. While their chemistry was off the pages and delicious, their caring, sensitive, and encouraging traits make them even more ideal for one another.
At its heart, Show Me is a touching tale about self-redemption, the will to confront injustice, the importance of a sense of worth, and the willingness to step outside of our comfort zones. A fun, uplifting, powerful, and heartwarming story that masterfully conveys the power of love.
I hope the next book is Hartley's. This man is an enigma, and I cannot wait for what he has to offer.
Receiving a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book was an honour, and I'm presenting my candid opinion based on my own experience. I am eternally grateful to Adriana Locke and Hambright PR for entrusting me with reading this book beforehand.
Someone please slap me for never having read anything by this author before, because wow ! her writing is seriously addictive. It’s perfect, smooth, and has this inspiring lightness to it, even when it touches on deeper themes, always with the most amazing sense of humor. Adriana Locke is officially my new comfort author. Huge thanks to Hambright and Adriana for this eARC and for sending me down yet another obsession.
Oh my God, I loved this book so much! It’s one of the best good girl × bad boy (playboy edition) romances I’ve read in a while. It hooked me from the very first page and just kept me wanting to read more and more and more…
Even though the good girl is innocent, it never feels over the top. It actually feels very real , she just wants to grow, discover who she really is, and stay true to herself. Her innocence isn’t exaggerated; instead, she’s written as a strong, intelligent character with a really well-built, positive development arc. And the best part is that this growth happens alongside Brooks.
Basically, the story follows Brooks, an injured fighter, and Audrey, a philosophy teacher, who end up crossing paths in a small town (with all the cozy magic that small-town romances bring!). At one point, by accident, Audrey’s “whimsy list” (this wonderful list of things she wants to try in order to build confidence and rediscover herself) ends up where Brooks can see it. When a good girl wants to try “bad things,” finds the perfect man to help fulfill those wishes, and he tells her “you should stop thinking about it and do it before it’s too late”… yeah, it’s just perfection.
I absolutely loved their dynamic. The flirting feels natural, super fun, and the chemistry between them is incredible and very sensual.
The way they meet is hilarious, and the fact that he thinks she’s some kind of vision his mind created from his most sinful fantasies is just amazing and so refreshingly original.
But the book also dives into deeper themes, like the pressure of being perfect, how people often get reduced to labels like “sweet” or “the good one,” and how important it is not to waste time and to truly value life. Audrey starts off as someone very proper and restrained , sweet, brilliant and she ends up completely captivated by her opposite, Brooks, who’s bold, charming, and very much a bad-boy type, but who also helps her on her journey of self-discovery.
The romance strikes a perfect balance between tender moments, romantic tension, and some spicier scenes. The sparks are obvious from the start, and the chemistry between the protagonists makes the story incredibly engaging. At its core, it’s about healing, self-discovery, and second chances for two very different people who are both carrying their own traumas.
It’s empowering, emotional, and at the same time light and really fun to read.
Definitely the kind of book that kept a smile on my face the whole time and even inspired me to start my own whimsy list. ✨
🥊 MMA fighter ✅️ whimsy list 😜 he helps her with her list 🫣 brother's nemesis 😎 bad boy x good girl 🩷 small town
Thank you Hambright PR for the ARC!
This book was fast paced and oh-so fun! I loved the characters from start to finish. It was comforting and cute and gave me the giddy giggles. Brooks Dempsey is soooo book bf-worthy!
Audrey wants to change up her life and truly dig deep to find herself after 27 years of living the same tame way within all the lines others have set for her. Her unpredictable streak starts off with accidentally being face to face naked with a man no other than Brooks Dempsey in a towel when she goes to stay at her friend's vacant cabin. Brooks is the perfect man for the job to help her with her list including: self defense, flirting, and exploring *other things* with a man.
“I wish you could see yourself as I see you.” His smile is soft. “You’d walk into every room with your head held high and not give a damn about what anyone thought about you—because you’d know you were everything.”
Brooks may have the reputation of being a "bad boy" but he has a huge heart of gold! I swooned so many times with just how emotionally open and considerate he is. He's confident, he's flirty, he's protective, but man does he always always always put Audrey's feelings first in consideration before making a move. And he always communicated that Audrey has an out. He fell first and he fell baaaaddd. I loved how goofy and cheeky he was in contrast to Audrey's more reserved nature.
Audrey's journey is always one I love to read! A woman trying to find herself. She's trying to break out of old habits that don't serve her like intense people pleasing and caring too much about what others think. She wants to be able to be free. She was admirable and strong and smart. I loved that her "innocence" wasn't overplayed like she was a child. No, she was very intelligent and mature and relatable. I loved her dedication to her whimsy list and to not fall back on her old habits even when things got tough.
Audrey and Brooks's interactions were so addicting and cheeky! They brought the best out of each other. Brooks was obsessed with Audrey despite telling himself he's not worthy. And Audrey felt so free with Brooks from the start to speak her mind no matter what because of how he treats her. I ate up their easy interactions. Their cute flirting. All of it! I love the anxious gf x chill bf combo so much!
The small town and little getaway trio was so cozy. No wonder Audrey felt at home enough to blossom. The friendships between the ladies and the guys was perfect like one big family. And shoutout to Otis the hot dog addicted cat!
There were a few elements I thought needed to be expanded a bit but not a big deal. I still really loved this book. To sum it up really, I just wanted MORE from them. I couldn't get enough. It was the pace and mood that I needed. Pretty perfect to me!
