Sir James Paul McCartney MBE, known as Paul McCartney, is an English singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, poet, entrepreneur, painter, record producer, film producer, and animal-rights activist. He gained worldwide fame as one of the founders and members of The Beatles. McCartney and John Lennon formed one of the most influential and successful songwriting partnerships and "wrote some of the most popular music in rock and roll history". After leaving The Beatles, McCartney launched a successful solo career and formed the band Wings with his first wife, Linda Eastman McCartney, and songwriter/singer Denny Laine. He has worked on film scores, classical music, and ambient/electronic music; released a large catalogue of songs as a solo artist; and taken part in projects to help international charities.

McCartney is listed in Guinness World Records as the most successful musician and composer in popular music history, with 60 gold discs and sales of 100 million singles. His song "Yesterday" is listed as the most covered song in history and has been played more than 7,000,000 times on American television and radio. Wings' 1977 single "Mull of Kintyre" became the first single to sell more than two million copies in the UK, and remains the UK's top selling non-charity single. (Three charity singles have since surpassed it in sales; the first to do so—in 1984—was Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?", whose participants included McCartney.)

His company MPL Communications owns the copyrights to more than 3,000 songs, including all of the songs written by Buddy Holly, along with the publishing rights to such musicals as Guys and Dolls, A Chorus Line, and Grease.

An iconic figure in contemporary culture, he is regarded internationally as an entertainer and humanitarian. Aside from his musical work, McCartney is an actor, a painter, a poet, and an advocate for animal rights, vegetarianism, and music education; he is active in campaigns against landmines, seal hunting, and Third World debt.

This has to be the most inspired album in Paul McCartney's solo career. It was written during the era in which Paul was experiencing a popularity resugence due to the Beatles Anthology project, and the time when his beloved wife, Linda was slipping away due to illness. The rockers have bite. The ballads have purpose. And the lyrics on this song collection are probably his strongest since the late Beatle period. A cool guest appearance by Steve Miller on a pair of songs. And some exceptional production by Jeff Lynne and a gorgeous string arrnagement by Gorge Martin on the album's most affecting song, Somedays.

A strong case can be made for Flaming Pie being the best album in the solo catalog of Paul McCartney. The album features several candidates for a lead single, plus the most inspired tunes since his days as a Beatle. The track, Young Boy is a sweet, straightforward rocker inspired by Paul's son, James. The World Tonight is a bit grittier but equally commercial and memorable. The title track is a bouncy piano driven track in the vein of Lady Madonna. Some fantastic ballads here too including Little Willow (inspired by the death of Maureen Starkey - Ringo's first wife), Somedays, clearly influenced by Linda McCartney's long battle with cancer, and Beautiful Night, a fine album closer with a surprise guest appearance by Ringo Starr. The sound is great on this record, not surprisingly because it was produced by Jeff Lynne.

Best album of McCartney's solo career. The songwriting here is truly inspired. The ballads are plentiful and heartfelt. Somedays (written while his wife, Linda was in cancer treatment) is vulnerable and full of pain and beauty. Beautiful Night is moving and optimistic (with some guest vocals from Ringo Starr). Little Willow is one of his finest ballads (written for the children of Maureen Starkey after her death). Calico Skies is dreamy and a bit nautical. The rockers are strong including The World Tonight and Souvenir. Young Boy features Steve Miller and some fine harmonies with a surprise ending. All in all a solo masterpiece from a master songwriter late in his career.
