Each and every poem is thought provoking. This is first ever I was reading Akhtar Ji apart from the few Bollywood lyrics that I've heard and liked. Now it seems that those lyrics are nothing but just a teaser into how deep the poet writes. After reading even the first poem, my reaction was, "Ye kya likh dia hai." Few poems, I even read multiple times because they just struck out of nowhere, I felt underprepared. As much I am aware of the poet's activism, this book is more about his person's internal journey. There is this element of surprise or irony in the closing of each poem that just makes the reading experience more worthwhile. If I might dare compare, it reminded me of Agyey Ji.
Can't comment much on translation since I didn't bother reading the translations. Except for one poem and I must say, what I could not comprehend in my own language I could understand in English so must have been a really good effort.
"In Other Words" by Javed Akhtar is a collection of poignant and powerful poems that offer a unique perspective on the urban world and the human experience.
The poems reflect the urban milieu that surrounds him, capturing the helplessness, hunger, homelessness, crowds, solitude, filth, crime, fame, obscurity, and the contrasting realities of the rock-strewn footpaths and glass-studded skyscrapers.
The book is filled with verses that make readers pause and reflect on the realities of the world we live in. Akhtar's words are powerful and thought-provoking, evoking a range of emotions as readers journey through the pages. Some of the poems are particularly moving, tugging at the heartstrings and leaving a lasting impact.
Overall, it is a gem of a book that touches the soul with its meaningful poems and thought-provoking reflections. It is a nice, light read that leaves a deep impact, making readers ponder long after the last page is turned.
