Patty Lee and Carmen Rosa Peäna compete to be the top reader in the fourth grade and earn the right to wear the dragon costume in the Read Across America Day parade.
Again, Mrs. Skorupski dazzles librarians with her themed accessories and success motivating kids to read with a simple reading-minute challenge with a cool incentive. I'm not sure how much kids will enjoy this, but it's a school librarian's fantasy, dream-come-true in picture book format.
I wish Mrs. Skorupski was my school librarian! I loved the journey in this book and celebrating the different ways we can read. Patty's and Carmen's personal challenge made me uncomfortable and seemed to undermine the joyful goal of the story.
This could easily be a guideline for a school-wide reading challenge. Everyone knows a "Carmen" and students will relate to both sides of the competition. I like that audio books and reading to/with others are both introduced and treated as valid reading time. I'll suggest using this as a jumping off point for a holiday reading incentive program that would culminate with a RAA event.
Absolutely love anything from Toni Buzzeo. As a school teacher librarian and media specialist she is very aware of what we need to get students "fired up" about reading! I enjoy sharing her books with my students and using them to teach library skills. Her books help me instill a love of reading
