Holly and her family move to Seattle, Washington, when her step-father is asked to move back with the company. She's in her senior year of high school and decides to carry on, with only a few terms left to go. There she meets Devon Valencia, a nice girl who quickly becomes her friend. Then there's this guy. She doesn't know who is but he seems to look for her. She loses her ability to speak in front of him. So when she finds out he is related to one of her friends, things start to get a little complicated. One day, one of the guys in the group unwittingly causes one of Holly's biggest fears to come to the surface. What follows is a journey to the unknown. Excited, yet nervous, can Holly finally show how she feels? Alex Valencia is the high school 'beef cake'. Girls want him, guys want to be like him, but he's not interested. He just wants a quiet time, to be left alone and enjoy school. That is, until Holly shows up. Never before has he felt the need to be with someone. His days are filled with thoughts of Holly and he finds himself having feelings that he'd never felt before. For any girl. Especially Stacey. She harrasses him and he can't seem to get her to stop. One day, that changes… The high school bitch and slut does something she shouldn't and the events that follow cause some problems. Happy endings are saught but difficulties must be overcome to achieve them. Not just for Holly, but for her friends. Stacey was in his bed, waiting for him. She had the sheet over her but it was evident that she was naked. Her disgusting clothes were all over his floor. Alex started to heave. “Go” said Ben. “I’ll stay here.” Alex ran to the master bathroom and vomited. He could hear Ben shouting at Stacey. “Get out of his bed, you f*****g crazy whore!” he shouted. “I’m waiting for Alex.” She said with venom in her tone. “What the f***?! So you thought you would break into his house and get in his bed?” “Now he can see how much I want him.” She said, as if that made it all ok. “No” said Alex from the doorway, his stomach now empty. “I hate you. I despise everything about you. I can’t even look at you without feeling sick.” “You don’t mean that, baby.” She said, trying to soothe him. “Then why have I just puked my guts up, seeing you there. I’m only standing here now because there’s nothing left inside. Now. Get. Out. Of. My. Bed.” Alex was so angry he could feel his blood boiling in his veins. His jaw hurt from gritting this teeth and his heart was pounding. And, for the first time since meeting Holly, it wasn’t a good thing. “Let’s just talk about it baby.” She said, batting her eyes and holding out a hand. “Don’t you call me that! Don’t you ever call me that! I’m not your f*****g baby!” he almost screamed. He quickly glanced around his room. She’d been through his stuff. His clothes, his drawers. Oh no, no, no! Please no! “Get. Out. Now. And put your skanky clothes back on!” he growled. “But, Alex, I love you!” she pleaded. Alex dry heaved and took a deep breath.

Just WoW

I had no idea this book was going to be such a fantastic read. Loved everything about it but I nearly lost it when everyone had been together except the main couple. Kept me on my toes, went to bed dreaming of the ending. Excellent Writing, 5 fantabulous stars on to the next book.

Welcome To New Haven introduces us to Holly Edwards and Alex Valencia. After 17 year old Holly relocates to Seattle from Liverpool, England she quickly makes friends with Dev and her friends Kayla and Riss. She also eye flirts with a hot guy she sees on her first day of school, who unbeknown to Holly is actually Dev's twin brother, Alex.

Along with his friends Kyle, Ben and Ryan, the sexy, tall, dark haired guy who sends Holly mute very time he speaks to her, makes up the tight knit group of friends that Holly will soon come to depend on. Depend on more than she ever thought she would when Stacey, a girl who has an unhealthy obsession with Alex, takes a disliking to the attention Holly gets from everyone, including a certain Mr Valencia.

While the story was easy to read, enjoyable, and I liked every character in it, the book does have some flaws. The main one for me being the sheer length of it. 800+ pages for a book of this genre, in my opinion is too much. The first 40% or more is a lot of the same stuff repeated and I felt a lot of it could actually have been left out.

At 17 years old I find it a little hard to believe too, that the 2 leads don't know what the feelings they are having are. Yes they may have never had them before, but they would surely recognize that they are attracted/aroused. Without trying to deliberately stereotype, as a Brit myself, I find it a little unrealistic that a girl from Liverpool wouldn't have had some sort of discussion on the subject. As for a practically 18 year old boy, again, if he doesn't know why he's getting "reactions" down there, then the sex talk his parent's gave him and Dev when they were 14, wasn't a very good one.

The other thing that was a little off putting for me was all the Spanish talk. The speaking Spanish in itself was fine, but more often than not it wasn't translated, so you either had to stop reading to translate something or you just had to not know what they were saying.

There were quite a few editing issues throughout the book too, none of it detracted from the story for me, but I feel I should mention them to be honest and a good edit read through can easily sort that out.

On the whole though, I enjoyed the book. I wanted to see what would happen with everyone, I just feel that the first half was dragged out a bit too much. Once Alex and Holly finally admitted their feelings, the whole book sped up dramatically and you could feel the story pick up pace with all the characters. And for what I would describe as a very “tame” book, Dawn Doyle sure can write a good sexy time scene.

I'd say this is a 3.5 book for me, but I've given it 3 as you can't do half stars on here. I think with a good edit read through and maybe cutting some of the first half, it could definitely be a 4 for me.

If you ever met me in person or any of my family members you will eventually here an inside joke: "English is Alaina's second language." Unfortunately for my family, it isn't. When I was younger I loved to make up my own words or mispronounce words all the damn time. I always thought it was hilarious--my family didn't, well my sister did. I still do it even today just to get a laugh out of people. The reason I'm telling you this is because I hate being the grammar or spelling police--but when a book has those problems it just frustrates me. Because every book has an editor and I'm thinking... how the hell did the editor miss these errors?!?

Other than that terrific fact, I actually liked Welcome to New Haven. Even though it was a very long book--it was quite entertaining. I liked all of the characters and the flow throughout the book. I am looking forward to read another book by Dawn Doyle.

DNF @51%

I can't anymore. You know Mariana Zapata's books right? Imagine that slow burn romance multiplied by 10 and the result is this book. They aren't together until the 50% mark (6315 position)!!! And at that point, I didn't care for any of the characters.

Such a pity because I wanted to like this and I wanted this to be my first 2019 read.

The writing style was vey amateurish. DNF. I could not get into the story simply because of the way it was written.

This young adult story made a refreshing change as it was not only pure young love but had a sinister side too. The only downside to the story was the amount of "I love you's". They became a little repetative at times. Overall I really enjoyed the book.

I received this book as an arc and am reviewing it for bookwhore addicts. I absolutely loved this book and i could almost hear Holly and her sister Emilys accents in my head as i was reading. If you are into a suspenseful romance then this book is for you. Even though the characters are just finishing up high school the author has made this tasteful and respectfully done at least i think. I am now reading the second one and cant wait to see what that one brings.

I Loved this book. It was so beautifully poignant. How they met, how they fell in love and the fact that our hero wasn't promiscuous was refreshing. To see lasting friendships and relationships, priceless. One of my faves this year.

Not saying it was bad

Ok. I am the first to admit that I suck at anything that does with grammar, spelling, or really anything....but this book had a lot of problems with those issues.

Not saying it was bad because the book overall was really good, LONG but good. I gave this book 3 stars because its not a bad book and could use some proof reading and spell check.

I hope others will enjoy this book also.

I couldn't finish it

This book had such a great story line but it just dragged and dragged. And I got confused in a few parts because the character just didn't seem finish there thought process and than jumped to another character. Sweet story but could have been cut in half.

Great first book in a series.

This is a great book. I really loved Alex and Holly. Their love was young but through time matured and became strong. I loved all the secondary characters and Dawn has a way of writing that makes you feel like you're in the story. I highly recommend reading this book, I can't wait for Emily and Nick's book.

Not even sure where to start with this book. There were so many little things that annoyed me, but I guess I'll start with the biggest annoyance of all that I had with it;

1. There must have been no editor. At all. WHATSOEVER. The ENTIRE book had spelling typos, grammatical errors, misplaced quotation marks, random capitalized words (you're not Margo Roth Spiegelman, you're a published author); you name a writing error, this book has it. Even if this IS only a Kindle book and not one that actually went to print, I die a little inside every time I read a book that has errors like this. In my opinion, they're absolutely inexcusable. It's such an easy mistake to fix, all you have to do is read through your own book and fix whatever you find. Not too hard.

2. It has a really weird changing point of view throughout the entire book. You really had to think about whose point of view you were supposed to be thinking from. It would have been easier if each chapter had a different character's name at the top for who you were about to read from, but it just switched out randomly letting the reader figure out for themselves when it did change. Which brings me to...

3. ...the chapters were just so randomly split up. I think the author just kind of thought, "I guess it's been a while, maybe I should start a new chapter", instead of letting the plot naturally split the book up.

4. This book takes place over about a month, and it's over 800 pages long. AKA, this book really knows how to drag. Everything leading to the main couple finally getting together is fine, but then everything after that is so repetitive, you could have probably cut out about half the book and you wouldn't miss anything. Lots of descriptive hot and heavy scenes which, don't get me wrong, I LOVE, but there's only so many times you can read the same content without it getting SUPER boring.

5.The dialogue was painful for me. But I've read another book by this author and it was the same situation for that one. They behaved like middle school kids with their first crush when they're 13 instead of 18 year old seniors in high school. I get that they've never had a crush before each other, but teenagers that age still don't act like that, it was weird. On top of that, "I love you's" were handed out more than candy on Halloween night, and every relationship in this book is younger than 2 weeks. That being said...

I think this book would be perfect for a middle school aged reader if there weren't intense physical scenes in it, but because there are, it felt like a more childlike attempt at a romance book. If it was cut in half, I probably would have given it two stars, but because of it's length, along with all the other problems I had with it, I would not recommend this book unless you're looking to kill some time. Like a full day, wake up, read this book, go to bed kind of time.

Re-read:-

I absolutely adored the depth and attention expounded on structuring daily school activities. This story was relatable and clearly demonstrated that the MC’s actually attended school including struggling with homework.

This author engaged my interest teleporting me back to high school.
I especially enjoyed the consistencies of Holly’s English inner musings versus Alex’s Americanisms.

This is a book I repeatedly revisit to reconnect with my inner child. Reminiscent of the coy glances, that excitement and anxiety to get to school early in an effort to catch a glimpse of your secret crush.

Both sets of parents were properly outraged with Stacey, the school’s ‘social misfit and outcast’ when the school system failed to identify her as a potential threat.

In my opinion the characters were well depicted and I truly enjoyed their support system. Emily and Holly’s sibling bond was comical. her protectiveness involving the pool incident with Ryan and ultimately Ryan’s brother, Nick - made Emily irrational and quasi-homicidal.

One final note, as someone that shares the MC’s hydrophobia, I related perfectly to Holly’s inner panic being in close proximity to water.

Devon or Dev and her girls (cousins Marissa ‘Riss’ and Kayla) and her twin Alex and his boys, Ben, Ryan and Kyle.

A fun read revisiting high school. Loved it❗️

Ugh

This was probably the longest book I've ever read... not necessarily lengthwise, but I felt like it took years to read. I had to force myself to finish it and I skipped paragraphs hoping to get to something good. There was very little point in this. The characters were too fluffy & the rules &
the relationships were just weird.
There were sooo many day to day details, I wanted to poke my eyes out... and I kept reading, hoping to get to something important... but it never happened.
Maybe I'm too old for this book, although, I have read other YA books and enjoyed them.
I won't be reading the sequel with the h's sister...

First off I love dawn Doyle book, and therefore had great hope for this book and I was not let down.
I loved Alex and holly and all their friends. I even enjoyed the slow build up into there relationship. The only negative would be, after reading the book a couple of time the end of the book get a bit repetitive, with them trying to be good and not breaking their parents rules. I can overlook that because this book has become one of my favourite.

It was a really great story line. BUT. It was like it the book was never proof read or edited or read at all before it was released. There were so many grammar errors. Especially in the dialogue. Quotation marks where either misplaced or not there at all. It was very frustrating for me. But I loved the story. It was worth 99 cents for all of the pages and great read. But the errors were terrible.

It was okay. I have a hard time getting into this authors books but I think her plots are good I think her descriptions sometimes are too long or to repetitive and for me it sometimes distracts from the story instead of adding to it.

I really wanted to like this book but I just couldn't. I read the first few chapters and then just skimmed the rest, waiting for it to be over. I thought it was repetitive, long winded and I just couldn't connect with the characters.
