The Lies That Bind

Rate this book
Mason knew he was valuable.
As an omega, his future has never truly been his own, and then he learns just how little choice he has. Two struggling wolf packs are set to merge for their own reasons—and to seal the deal, Mason has been promised in marriage to the wealthy heir of the rival pack. He is everything Mason entitled, controlling, and convinced an omega exists to be owned.
Desperate to escape a future he never chose, Mason makes a reckless claim—he can’t marry another, because he’s already promised to his human best friend, Kip.
It’s a lie meant to buy time, nothing more.
Until the packs demand proof and the lie becomes impossible to escape.

Forced to play the part, Mason and Kip step into a relationship neither of them expected. What begins as pretense turns into something deeper, stronger, and far more real than either is ready to admit. Mason finds the steady Dominant he’s always needed. Kip discovers a hunger—and a devotion—he never knew he had.
For a while, life is good and love feels safe.
Then everything changes when Mason is attacked and left for dead. As danger closes in, Mason’s past, his bond, and his very life hang in the balance.

And Kip?

He has a secret powerful enough to change everything—again—if it doesn’t destroy them first.

This story and I did not connect for a number of reasons, some being specific to me and some being I think valid critiques of the book. I don't wade into the waters of the omegaverse very often, so I'm more than willing to own up to being a minority voice if some of my criticisms are staples of the genre that are just too different from my expectations.

The book spent a lot of energy on dominant and submissive mindsets and, in my opinion, muddied the waters enough that by the end, I was just as confused as Mason on how to proceed. The narration kept bouncing between talking about Mason's being able to form his own opinions as a good thing, then a bad thing, then a great thing, then a dangerous thing, then a needed thing, then the cause of all his problems. It also spent WAY too long teasing Kip's secret in a way that didn't feel like it paid off in the end, although I know it's going to be super relevant to the plot moving forward. Honestly, Kip lowkey seemed like he was under mind control the whole book lmao he went from 0 to 100 back to 40 and then up to 150 so quick. I don't know that I believe in their HEA honestly, it feels like they have WAY more to work out in terms of their dynamic, especially if it is a biological imperative as presented. Kip still feels very uncertain in his role, and I don't really feel like I saw Mason settled for a single moment.

In general, this just could've used a much heavier hand on consistent narration and different inner voices. The center conflict of the second half, the way it was resolved, and the ramifications for the rest of the series also felt very unearned and dependent on late-in-the-game lore drops. I think if I'd found this book as a completed series and was able to go straight through to the next one, there could be something interesting here. But as the story cuts off in a way that doesn't feel satisfying for either the couple or the overarching series plot, I don't see myself keeping my eyes peeled for the sequel.

Thank you to GRR for an eARC of this title in exchange for a fair review.

What a fabulous story! Ms. wells and Mr Williams have created another imaginative series. Mason is a rare Omega wolf shifter. Omegas are submissive born ‘to serve’ and bear their Dominant many children while accepting that they will be part of a polycule (several mates to one Dominant). When Mason is introduced to his intended, he is horrified. His ‘arranged’ Dominant is arrogant and pompous and humiliates Mason.

Kip, Mason’s best friend learns about the arrangement and is livid on Mason’s behalf, the biggest problem, Kip is not aware of the ‘shifter ways’ since he isn’t one. Kip comes up with a resolution, they’ll tell everyone that Mason can’t be with someone else since they had committed themselves to each other when they were kids.

Now, they’ll have to play their parts or Mason will be given over to Jerome. Kip had always considered himself to be straight but, he’d do anything for Mason. After Kip learns Mason’s secret, he discovers that he is the Dominant that Mason needs and he unknowingly always has been.

Kip however has a secret of his own that he knows he needs to tell Mason but several events prevent Kip from coming clean. Mason and Kip navigate their somewhat new dynamic and Kip needs to learn how to be the Dominant Mason needs.

There are attempts on Mason’s life but there are no leads or evidence. We discover Kip’s secret during one such attempt and it’s a doozy! I can’t wait for the next book!

Wow 2 different shifters in this story and not your regular OV book. But that was a big cliffhanger and I hope there is more. I’m really glad that Mason didn’t end up with Jerome but man did Mason go through so much but had Kip to keep him safe. I need the next book now!

what

This one was just…weird. DNF at 16%. The writing style was strange and immature, it came across like it was written by a middle or high-schooler. The whole setup of the universe was lacking, the setup of the pack was non-existent. I don’t even know what omega means in this story as we’re given no context. Does Mason have to obey because he is literally unable to refuse, or has he just been conditioned because his wolf is more submissive and it’s hard for him to stand his ground? Mason and Kip are supposed to be best friends and yet they never talk about anything real and therefore don’t actually know much about each other. Just the whole thing was weird and off-putting, from the writing to the families to the characters and the relationship, or lack of one, between them. This book is not worth anyone’s time, and is certainly a disappointing effort from these authors.

Review for (Dark Lies-1) The Lies that Bind by K.C. Wells & Parker Williams

This is a great first book in a series that I am really looking forward to reading more of. This is a fantastic series. These two authors hit it out of the ballpark for me. I love Omega/Alpha stories that have meat and love in the story. This story hit all those and more. This is about Mason (Omega), who has struggled with his life. He has no choice for his future; it is all planned out with him being an omega. Kip (Human). Mason has been promised to the alpha of a rival pack. He doesn't want this man who would control everything in his life. So, of course, not thinking, he says he can't marry him because he has been promised to Kit, a human. This story started out with a bang and just kept building and building. This story made me not want it to end because I wanted more. I need more from this series. Can't wait.

To each their own, but I really dislike reading m/f romances where the female is nothing but a "traditional" female stereotype and I find I dislike it even more when it's two men. Once the two are together the omega suddenly becomes unable to control his emotions, wants babies, wants to focus on decorating/cooking and making a home, and serving his dominant sexually. There doesn't seem to be much else going on in his head. Even though before he was emotionally stable, a good student and wanted to become a nurse. I miss that character.
Other than that, I think the book is a well written a/b/o. So just depends what you want between your alpha and omega.

Mason has spent his life knowing that, as an omega, his future isn’t truly his own. When two wolf packs merge and arrange to marry him off to a man who sees omegas as property, Mason rebels with a desperate lie — claiming he’s already promised to his human best friend, Kip. What was meant to buy time quickly becomes real as the packs demand proof, forcing Mason and Kip into a pretend bond that awakens unexpected feelings. As they share their painful pasts, Kip becomes the steady, protective presence Mason never thought he’d have, and Mason becomes the missing piece Kip didn’t know he needed. But when Mason is brutally attacked and secrets rise to the surface, their fragile bond is tested by danger, blood, and truths that could change everything. A dark fantasy MM romance about lies that turn into love, bonds chosen rather than forced, and the fight to survive together.

I absolutely loved this story. The love between Mason and Kip is undeniable from the moment their fake bond starts to shift into something real. The drama and danger woven through the plot kept me completely hooked, especially watching how fiercely protective Kip becomes whenever Mason is threatened. That hidden truth Kip was carrying was such a satisfying surprise and added an extra layer of tension and depth to their relationship. The writing style made it incredibly easy to feel every emotion right alongside them — the fear, the longing, the tenderness, and the slow realisation that what they’re building together is genuine. A gripping, emotional romance that had me rooting for them from start to finish.

THE LIES THAT BIND is the first book in the Dark Lies series, set in a paranormal world where Omegas are rare. Mason is an Omega and has been treated as a servant by most of his pack growing up. That all changes when Kip and his family move to town, and the two boys become best friends. When Mason is promised to Jerome, they think up a plan that will save Mason from having to mate him. Then the story really gets going.

This is a fast-paced story, full of attempted murder, best friends to lovers to I love you's. All the way through, you know Kip has a secret, but it's unclear what it is. I liked how Kip and Mason actually had to work at their relationship. Yes, it was incredibly fast, but it wasn't all smooth sailing. They had to figure out what worked best for them, amid all the amazing 'advice' given by different people.

As the first in a series, I was expecting some arc to come into play, but I was not expecting what I got! It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

I received an early edition of this story, and as such, it does need another edit. Chapters 5 and 6 (I think) were the same ones repeated, and it made me chuckle when "ears ran down his cheeks." Still, a good story that I look forward to seeing develop in future books.

"The Lies that Bind" is the first book in the Dark Lies series. Both authors are new to me so there was no comparison to earlier stories, but I don't think they're for me. While the story wasn't 'meh', I did start to skim the pages. Trying to drum up some enthusiasm.
Neither MC appealed. Kip came across as a borish bully. An early conversation between omega, Mason and himself regarding womanly assets was almost enough to make the book a DNF. Pretty disgusted by that. Finding out he was a 'Dominant', not to mention he was THE 'Dominant' that Mason 'needed' made him no less insufferable.
As for Mason, perhaps someone should 'splain' to the authors that omegas are not Stepford doormats. In less than a chapter, he went from interesting to a proper. obedient omega.
Omegas were rare, often used as marriage pawns and pack uniters. Mason was to mate (not marry, that was too high an honor for him) with an another pack's alpha heir, Jerome. Why his alpha and family accepted Kip as his mate instead was not explained. Or if it was, I missed it. I was skimming by that point.
Last third of the book did have some surprising twists. Totally redeemed the story from a 3 star review to a 3.5, knowing that review sites would round it up. What can I say, throw a certain supe into any book, and I will re-eval my rating.
A quick read. It wasn't awful, exactly. Did the last third pique my interest to power on to book two? Hmmm. Maybe.

'I’ll be honest. I don’t know what’s happening between us, but if I know you— and I do— you’re worrying that I’m going to walk away. Right?”
“Yes,” I whispered.
“Well, you don’t need to worry about that. I’m not sure what’s happening, but regardless, I will never walk away from you. If you need me as your Dominant, then that’s what I’ll do.”
His words rattled me. “Really?”
“Really,” he replied. “You might not realize this, but you’re one of the most important people in my life... “I can’t make any promises, but I want to see what this is between us. Would that be okay?”
It was more than I’d ever expected.
And way more than I’d ever hoped for.'

I loved this book. I really like the fake relationship trope, but in this book the stakes were higher than in any other I've read. Great world building and wonderful characters. I loved both Kip and Mason. I liked the dynamic between them and the way their relationship grew into more as they came together so that the packs wouldn't force Mason to mate someone he absolutely did not want. I really liked that the more time they spent together, the more they became exactly what the other needed. A bi-awakening for Kip, and Mason had his insecurities to fight through. But their bond was strong and their chemistry sizzled. I also liked a number of the supporting characters.

This story completely hooked me. There was danger, suspense, and some unexpected twists and turns, and I couldn't wait to see how everything would play out. This is the first book I've read by these authors, and I would read more. 5 stars

KC Wells and Parker Williams have created a story with an interesting world building and a very different, a bit kinky, approach to your normal shifter romance.
The scenes are hot as you would expect to see from these two authors.

Mason being an Omega wolf has always been told what his future will be. Omegas are rare in this world and while celebrated, they are also designed to be submissive and have a dominant.
When Mason struggles to come to terms with his arranged marriage happening soon, his human best friend Kip comes to the rescue and a chain of events is coming into effect.

I love how Kip has to re-learn how to deal with Mason the Omega instead of the best friend. It's a big learning curve which goes against his principles but both learn together how to move their relationship from friends to lovers while Kip also discovers a side on him he didn't thought he has.
Not everyone though is ok with their relationship and when Mason is the victim of an attack Kip really has to come to terms with his feelings and what their relationship needs.

But Kip is also keeping a secret which I think really brings this book above other shifter romances, his real self and the story behind it, is an amazing idea and I can't wait to read more of it. As the story ends with a HEA for Mason and Kip, it also ends with a cliffhanger moving the story forward. I can't wait for the next book.

Mason knew he had value as an omega. However, he resents having no say in his future but, he does agree to a match between him and the wealthy son of the alpha of another pack. Both packs are struggling and this could help them. However, the son, Jerome, turns out to be cruel, arrogant and entitled. Mason knows he would not be happy married to him. Desperate, he tells everyone he can’t marry Jerome due to a prior commitment to his best friend, Kip. Kip, who was thought to be straight, goes along with Mason. Forced to live together, the two are surprised to find so much more than they thought possible. But there are secrets on both sides that can be quite surprising as is the danger coming.

These two had so many problems. Mason was submissive but he was so insecure and unsure as to his position. Kip knew nothing about being a dominant but was determined to be the best one ever. The love the two had for each other was amazing and it made for great reading as that love grew and matured. The plot was intriguing and filled with danger. The ending was perfect but their happiness but tempered by an ominous statement. This is the first book in the series Dark Lies and promises to be a compelling series. Fun, danger and games are ahead for our reading pleasure.

The Lies That Bind has a strong premise, an omega forced into a political marriage who blurts out a desperate lie that spirals into something very real. The fake-relationship angle between Mason and his human best friend, Kip, had plenty of potential, and I was especially curious to see how a human would fit into pack dynamics that are usually so rigid.

I’ll admit, though, that my connection to the characters was mixed. Kip’s early interactions didn’t endear him to me, and his dominant streak sometimes came across as overbearing rather than protective. Mason also shifts quite quickly from resisting his fate to settling into a more traditional omega role, which felt abrupt. I wanted a bit more balance in their dynamic and clearer reasoning from the pack about why this arrangement was suddenly acceptable.

That said, the final portion of the book genuinely surprised me. The darker turn, the attack, and the secret Kip is harbouring added intrigue and energy that the earlier chapters lacked for me. It definitely raised the stakes and made the overall storyline more compelling.

A quick, dramatic read with enough twists towards the end to leave me wanting to read the next in the series.

Creative but all over the place

I appreciate a good omegaverse story and K.C. and Parker have created a new world with a different type of omega dynamic that intrigued me, once I got my head around it. When they use the word 'Dominant' it doesn't mean what we're used to in BDSM. Here, it's more like a protector, some one to give the omega structure and care, and at one point I think it said that the Dominant didn't have to be a romantic partner.
The friendship between Mason and Kip was established, but just about the only thing we saw was Kip telling Mase about his latest sexual conquest (girls only) while Mase screwed up his face at him. Then it all changed with one kiss, to save Mason from an arranged marriage, and suddenly it was all hearts and flowers.
The writing was a little immature and rambling. It stated it was edited but I honestly thought it wasn't. It was a bit repetitious and the language didn't always flow. I also didn't like Kip calling Mason dude and buddy once they got together (and expecially when they were having sex). It just sounded so wrong and out of place.
Kip's secret was a surprise and the ending was a cliffhanger. I'm intrigued enough to read the next one, maybe? The jury's out at the moment.
Two and a half stars rounded up.

DNF @ 70%
I had high hopes for this book. I love a good Friends to Lovers and a subby male Omega. The bones of this book were good, the premise was interesting, but for me, the pacing was completely off; for me, it could have been finished at the 40-50% mark. Our two leads got together too quickly, and it gave me the ick that Mason referred to Kip as 'like a brother' before the fake relationship scenario. It felt like Kip was shoehorned into liking Mason sexually and romantically (and vice versa). Their relationship developed too fast and then they were having sex and living together in the next breath. The story kind of felt like it should be over at that point because the HEA was achieved, but the plot continued on awkwardly. With some edits to the pacing, I could see the 60/70% mark being the climax instead of a slog towards the end. The whodunnit aspect didn't really inject enough angst for me either; Kip and Mason were just too immediately in tune and happy for it to be a complex challenge. Overall, the premise was good, but the execution needed work.

3.5 stars ~ I am so disappointed in these authors. I realize I'm giving them a high star rating, but honestly that's truly only for the creativeness of the story idea. This did not read like a book written by them, tbh. Certainly not the BDSM portions. The story/writing seemed to be all over the place, not to mention the inconsistencies. I feel like a content editor might have pointed a few things out to them. I adore both of these authors and writing this is making me sick to my stomach, but IMO they could've done WAY BETTER.
I'm sorry KC and Parker. I still love you and will continue to read your stories.

The Lies That Bind by K.C. Wells and Parker Williams. 2 men both with secrets who are best friends throughout school and each would do anything for the other. Mason, an Omega werewolf, is being forced to marry an arrogant alpha who thinks he owns Mason even before their wedding. Kip, a human, couldn't stand to watch his best friend so miserable and scared. He just couldn't listen to Jerome verbally abuse and hurt his friend, stood up and told their parents they were promised to each other that Mason was his and he could not marry another. Each hoped that their lies would keep them together and safe from mysterious outside forces trying to kill them. K.C. & Parker are fantastic coauthors in this new series. The story has several twists you don't see coming and gets your heart pumping, breaking and sighing all at once. Kip and Mason are the sweetest couple who are truly soul matched. I can't wait until the next installment.

This book had some really interesting dynamics, especially with how dominance and submission work in this world. Mason is absolutely adorable, with a touch of snark, which I always enjoy. Kip has a protective, possessive character profile that I also enjoyed. At first, it looked like Mason and Kip suddenly became completely different versions of themselves the moment their roles were defined, but the authors did a great job showing that those traits were actually there all along, just waiting to fully surface.

I liked both characters, though I found Kip’s reason for keeping his secret a bit… interesting, especially given that Mason had shared his. It kept me hooked while waiting for the reveal, and when it finally came, I couldn’t help but think, “Oh, silly Kip.” The suspense throughout the story hit the right balance, and I appreciated that the tense moments weren’t always predictable. Overall, this was an entertaining and engaging read.

This book is hard to rate. The story is interesting, the world-building unique. The love story was sweet, but the pace weird. I was absolutely taken aback by the narrative of "these kinds of people are better off when we don't listen to them and don't give them a choice", although I did feel a slight shift about that by the end of the book.
My biggest problem with this book was the writing: It felt erratic at times, the pacing felt weird. I felt like some of the decisions people made made absolutely no sense, certain conversations were going in circles or were unnecessary because the matter had already been discussed.
As you see, I did not vibe with this book. From what I read in other reviews there are people who really enjoyed this book so I hope this story finds the people who appreciate it.

I enjoyed this story. Mason and Kip are best friends and Kip is trying to save Mason from an unwanted arranged marriage, which works out splendidly for them. They discover feelings that have been dormant and their connection is very strong.
I feel like there is a lot more we don't know about this world and subsequent books will help in that, so I'm excited to see how things play out. I also felt like I was missing information that would have made the story better, if that makes sense. Things happened very quickly, and while that is good for some parts, I felt like other parts of the story needed more time to develop.

I enjoyed their dynamic and their willingness to work on things separately and also together, which showed great maturity. I enjoyed the characters and the story and I'm curious to see how this series continues.

Outstanding! Different worldbuilding for omega lifestyles. Mason, has been groomed to know his place as an omega. He has his own feelings, but he knows his place. Kip, is Mason's best friend. They solidified their friendship as kids and maintained the closeness through college. Mason, is a wolf and Kip has a family secret. When Mason graduates high school, he learns he is betrothed to a loathsome alpha and his pack is depending on the mating. He attendance at college is the equivalent of living with his head in a guillatine. As graduation approaches, Mason and Kip come up with a solution that affects the rest of their lives, the pack, their livlihood and their future. Excellent story, adventure, conflict, danger and valliant struggle for good solutions. Great characters, Mason and Kip keep getting better and better. Well done! This is an interesting story and it is full of emotion. I enjoyed meeting Kip and Mason and seeing how their relationship progressed from friendship to something more. It is a bit slow moving at times and some of the nicknames and language pulled me out of the story. I loved the concept and the characters. The meaning of omega seemed a bit different each time it was referred to and whether it was good or not for Mason to be himself. Omega and Dominant have a different overall meaning in this story while it does include the meanings we all know it seems to mean much more. While I did not love this story, I did love Mason and Kip. The two are good together and the love that they share is a beautiful bond and I am eager to see where they go from here.

The things we do for our best friends can push us further than we ever thought we’d go—even to the point of making promises that feel as binding as a lifelong commitment.

Kip has always stood by Mason. They’ve been inseparable since childhood, their bond unshakable, built on years of loyalty and unspoken understanding. So when Mason needs him, Kip doesn’t hesitate. Even if he doesn’t fully understand the dynamics of what he’s stepping into, he knows one thing for certain—he’ll do whatever it takes to help his best friend.

But some choices come with consequences.

Because Kip is keeping a secret. One that could change everything.

And if the truth comes out… it might not just test their bond—it could destroy it.

The Lies That Bind is the first book in the Dark Lies series by K.C. Wells and Parker Williams. When Mason finds out he’s been promised in marriage to a cruel alpha, he and Kip (his best friend) pretend that they are together to save Mason from a disastrous marriage. The last thing either of them expected was to fall in love.
This is a great story. In their pretense, Mason and Kip found what they needed in each other and themselves. I love how Kip stepped up to the plate to become the partner Mason could rely on. When an attempt is made on Mason’s life, Kip reveals his shifter identity to protect the man he loves.

The Lies That Bind is the first book in the Dark Lies series. This is the story of Mason a rare omega wolf shifter and Kip a human with a secret of his own. I loved this fast paced story full of action, friendship that turns to love, and secrets to solve. I loved the characters and world building that went into this book. I loved how Mason and Kip just were perfect for each other. I loved watching their relationship change and grow. The plot was interesting and kept me wanting to read more to answer my questions. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book.

This story has a bit of relationship angst due to all the lies and secrets and trying to figure out how to make stuff work. It is a good read. I’d give it maybe 3.5 stars but only because I didn’t really understand the bit about Kip’s family and his secrets 100%. We also got a tiny cliffhanger but they are HFN with a hint at trouble. I did like how Mason and Kip do start to try and talk stuff out as they figure out their dynamic. I felt like the town really let Mason down though and there wasn’t really any resolution to that.

I honestly couldn't put this one down!

This is the first book from the Dark Lies series, I'm not sure how many are to follow, but I know I can't wait to find out what happens next......

Mason & Kip's relationship evolves through this book from childhood best friends to so much more. All to save his friend from a potentially nasty arranged marriage.

They work through ups and downs, a few heart wrenching moments, but they become stronger together. Thanks K C Wells & Parker Williams you've both kept me on edge with the cliffhanger ending - I need more!!!

A super intriguing new series. Alpha/Omega. Two best friends who have been in each other's pockets forever. But they both have secrets.

When Mason’s expected to enter an arranged marriage with a truly horrible guy, he and Kip decide to fake a relationship. It forces out secrets and sets them in sets of some dark and difficult times.

Their relationship is complex and changing, but their strength and commitment is beautiful.

There were some slow moments, but there’s an entire new world to introduce us to, and I have no doubt the rest of the series will be incredible.

I'm sorry, but this was just bad.

The story details are all over the place, there are repeated sentences and repeated whole chapters, the author seems to have forgotten what they wrote, and gave conflicting information in the storyline (like how the MC’s met). It was obvious that this book wasn’t professionally (or even semiprofessionally) edited. The writing isn’t great, and honestly, a lot of it didn’t even make sense.

I finally had to give up. I don’t DNF often, but this was a total flop for me. It read like a teenager was writing bad fanfiction.

Really interesting concept and world building, but somewhat erratic execution in terms of both writing and pacing. Some parts were really fast and some seemed to drag on, with repetition of conversations in places where the matter seemed to have already been settled. Some of the character development was also a bit off for me, particularly with Mason once he was mated. Kip's big twist was pretty cool though. There are still lots of questions to be answered in this world, and I'm sure subsequent books will be as interesting.
