This novella?? Absolutely did what it needed to do and then some!
Going into Godsbane without reading this first? Couldn’t be me (I need everyone to be properly prepared). This is THE setup! Gods, Golden Pantheon, rebellion and it makes everything hit so much deeper (the context?? UNMATCHED!). Selene and Drayven?? Obsessed (immediately, ZERO hesitation!). From the start, their connection is intense, the chemistry is effortless, and the yearning is off the charts (I was locked in…). He is all in for her, she meets him with equal strength, and together it’s intense, emotional, and completely consuming (exactly what I want every time..please and thank you lol). The love, the sacrifices, the stakes… I was hooked. And YASSSSS!!! The spice absolutely delivered (shewww, I ate it up!), especially that moment where he shows exactly how far he’ll go for her (you know the one eeeekssss!). For a short prequel, it gives so much, detailed world building, prophecy, heartbreak, and that fierce protective love that stays with you (Lindseyyyy! I’m not over ittt!).
Also forever screaming because I’m on Lindsey’s coolest street team and got an early copy of this, I need the next book immediately! Thanks so much!!!
This novella was it!! It was perfect for following Godsbane (which you have to read first or you’ll be a little sad - it would spoil so many good parts!)
Having read both, this gave so much context and additional depth to Godsbane! It was seriously so good!! With remaining its own story, you get tidbits that feed into what’s coming too! You get the backstory and some of your inquiries answered - putting everything together and I couldn’t get enough!!
The balance between Light and Death - really dark and light being equivocally drawn to each other and the delicate balance….the forbidden love aspect…this was just so beautifully written. You have gods, rebellion, tension, worshiping, yearning bargains, prophecy and fate all wrapped in this gift of a prequel novella! Seriously - pick it up and read it!! You won’t be able to put it down and I cannot wait for the second book!! Thank you Lindsay for the early copy!! Love being on your hype team 🖤
Oh we are SO locked in for book two—everything is starting to click into place. This novella was such a perfect little backstory moment for our main characters in Godsbane, but wow, it absolutely delivers. It felt like the most satisfying collection of tiny Easter eggs, each one hitting harder than the last. And I’m sorry, but Mommy Light and Daddy Death are SO HAWT. This just got me so hyped for the next book!!
✨Fantasy Romance ✨Shadow Daddy ✨Forbidden Love ✨Hades x Persephone Twist ✨Bargains, Prophecy & Fate
This novella is part of the Godsbane Universe *to be read after Godsbane*
This was SUCH a good novella. You MUST reads Godsbane FIRST or you will spoil so many things for yourself, but this added so much context and depth to the story and so many nuggets of information as to what’s about to go down in the next book. And Lordy it gets HOT 🥵 my only complaint is I wanted more 🤪
Godsbane was good, but Deathsbane was SO much better! I loved getting to know more about Selene and Drayven's love. I honestly wasn't sure I wanted to continue reading the series after Godsbane - but this novella has convinced me not to give up on this series!
I don't think I've ever had a novella add so much to the original story. This was such a quick read but provided incredible back story to Godsbane. You absolutely must read this second though or else it spoils some twists!
After reading this I immediately wanted to reread Godsbane to see all the little clues along the way.
OH MY GOSH!!! I know this is just a novella, but I did not want this to end! I was captivated from the first until the very end. This story gives so much backstory to Godsbane and everything became so clear as to the intentions of the characters. You learn the reasons of why people are dying, where they are coming from, and what their intentions are. I wish we had more time with these characters because I was so invested in their stories and intentions that I just wanted more. I can’t say too much without spoiling, but if you loved Godsbane, you will absolutely love Deathsbane. I can’t wait to see where this story goes! ☺️
Deathsbane by Lindsey Richardson [ARC REVIEW] ★★★★☆ 4/5 stars Release date: March 17th, 2026
How long can a God yearn before his secrets become weapons?
IF YOU LIKE: • Gods in love • Yearning (for millennia) • Opposites attract • Spice and magic intertwined • Prophecy and fate • Political maneuvering YOU’LL LOVE Deathsbane
≪ Every muscle in my body stiffens in restraint. I have watched the goddess from afar for a millennia, always wanting her but never daring to take her. ≫
HIGHLIGHTS: • Drayven, God of Death → Drayven is a God built from two things: trauma and yearning. Both sides of him are revealed in stark clarity throughout Deathsbane. We see him pine for the Light he believes he has not earned, we watch him manage the pain of torture and betrayal at the hands of his own family, and we get to see how those two sides of him interact. He’s a prisoner with the selfish power of a God and self-delusion skills far more suited to a mortal. His penance, never complete, prevents him from reaching for what he wants until she thrusts herself into his hands… and when he does take her, he does so fully understanding that he does not get to keep her. Drayven is a fascinating cross between sacrificial and starving, self-aware and self-loathing, supportive and secretive. He knows more than he says and does more than he needs to, and he is the steady foundation that the entire Godsbane universe rests upon.
• Selene, Goddess of Light → The pantheon thinks that she is light and bubbly, careful and loving—and not at all dangerous. But Selene makes it very clear that she is a force to be reckoned with; not just due to her magic, but due to her unassailable spirit. She is determined and stubborn to a fault, but she also happens to be RIGHT; a brilliant strategic mind hides beneath her glow, and she makes it clear both in Drayven’s POV and her own that she is not one to be counted out. She is the unending heat of the sun and the light that cuts through the night. She is the soothing balm of moonlight and the life-ending dryness of drought. She is refraction and source. She is so, so much more than the other Gods believe she is, and watching her refuse to be underestimated—watching her force her way into the Under Realm, and make political moves of her own—is entertainment and vindication all at once.
• When light and death combine → The sequence where Selene’s magic touches the Under Realm is some of the most beautiful writing I’ve ever read. The way Richardson describes the magic and passion colliding is nothing short of brilliant. It’s more than lust and emotional connection: it’s a fundamental shift in power, an irrevocable balance between light and darkness finally achieved. This moment had to live up to millennia of yearning and desire from both sides, and I don’t think it would be wrong to say that it EXCEEDED its own expectations. The combined magic and might of these two Gods is a cosmic, elemental shift, and the impact and ramifications of their union—both magical and physical—echo throughout the rest of the story. We are never allowed to forget how deeply they altered one another, and I never wanted to.
• The Godsbane connections → Richardson made it very clear that this novella, while technically a prequel to her debut novel, Godsbane, should not be read first. Having ARC read Godsbane and now Deathsbane, I full-heartedly agree. Deathsbane thrives as a novella by building directly into the mythos and history of Godsbane, and it does so by not over-explaning itself. The story assumes we know what’s coming and treats us like we belong in the thick of this history… which is a 1:1 mirror to how Selene and Drayven move through the political maneuvers that are happening around them. The art here literally mimics life, as the MCs learn about the future that we’ve already seen and make choices based upon the story that WE have lived through, but they haven’t. Deliberately aligning Deathsbane as a subsequent sequel was a perfect choice: it allows us to live inside the characters as they learn the future, while simultaneously sparing Richardson from wasting precious novella real estate on exposition.
≪ A world full of endless night must contain moonlight and starlight. One step into his realm and I could show him the beauty in the darkness. ≫
WISHLIST: • More variation in voice → While the POV voices were distinct in the beginning, as the story progressed it became harder and harder to tell at a glance which POV we were in. I’m not sure if Drayven’s voice softened or if Selene’s hardened, or if they both shifted and met somewhere in the middle; but more than once in the stretch between 50-75% complete, I found myself scrolling back to double-check which POV I was actually reading. This may even have been a stylistic decision—it lines up nicely with their relationship itself—but I personally found that it dragged me out of the moment a handful of times when I would have much preferred to stay locked in.
≪ “Isn’t it always what we love that kills us?” ≫

*I received an Advance Review Copy of this book from the author
I genuinely don’t know how she managed to give us two god tier reads… but she did. Lindsey Richardson, you have done it yet again.
Deathsbane was everything I wanted and more. It’s a quick novella, but wow… it delivers on every single level. The tension, the yearning, the spiiiiice… oh my god. Absolute perfection. And the way it ties together pieces from Godsbane? It’s literally like an Easter egg hunt all being pulled into one masterpiece.
Perfect if you love: ❤️🔥 Forbidden love 🏛️Gods and secrets 🥵 Dark, broody MMC with a soft spot for her (literally worships her) ❤️🔥 Unmatched yearning and tension 🖤 Hades x Persephone vibes ⚔️ Rebellion and war
I loved getting a glimpse into the past and seeing the gods whose story shaped everything in Godsbane. It was the perfect tie of both stories and connected so many dots to lead us to the next book. And don’t even get me started on the Hades x Persephone ties….The forbidden love storyline was truly the icing on the cake. ❤️🔥 Truly the ultimate yearning & tension and HE worships her.
Now let’s talk about our MMC… Death… oh. my. god. 🥵 The things that man said?? I was unwell. His story, the tension, the morally black personality, the heartbreak… I was flying through pages just needing to know what would happen next, only to be left with that perfect mix of longing and devastation.
Lindsey truly knows how to write a story that hooks you and wrecks you in the best way. She has created a realm that’s unlike anything I’ve ever read & that’s what makes it a god tier for me. It ties all of the elements of romantasy together without overwhelming you or leaving you lost or confused.
Yall already know how much I loved Godsbane, but Deathsbane took that love to a whole new level. I’m so grateful I got to ARC read this and will forever be cheering Lindsey on.
I cannot wait to see where the Godsbane universe takes us next. 🖤✨
I loved Godsbane… but I LOVED Deathsbane. 🔥 For such a quick novella, Lindsey somehow packed an incredible amount of emotion, yearning, and angst into these pages. I genuinely didn’t want to leave this story! I could have stayed with these characters for so much longer. This novella gives us the backstory behind the Golden Pantheon of gods, in the midst of a brewing rebellion, and how the world ended up the mess we see in Godsbane. The lore in this one adds so much depth to the world.
Watching these two gods (who should be enemies) gravitate toward each other, and the tease that they have been doing this dance for centuries is immediately what drew me in. She is the Goddess of Light, he is the King of Death, and because their powers are tied together in nature, their connection is inevitable… even when they try to resist it.
The forbidden love element here was everything. The longing, the tension, the sacrifices they make for each other. I am such a sucker for a sacrificial love trope. Add in blood bargains, prophecies, impossible choices, a broody shadow daddy, with just enough spice... I was hooked! Overall, this novella adds so much emotional weight to the storyline and characters in Godsbane in a way that makes me want to do a third reread of Godsbane to hunt for all the easter eggs! It’s a delicious little brain snack and I loved every second of it but it also has been completely feral for book 2!
Thank you so much to Lindsey Richardson for the early ARC! Bless you for writing this story and this world!
Drayven and Selene's love story was truly one for the books, and I could've read an entire full-length version of their story and I'm confident I would have loved every second of it. From the very beginning of this novella, I was hooked. There was yearning, forbidden love, and just raw emotion flowing off the pages.
This novella made me feel more things in the short 142 pages than most romantasies have made me feel in the last 6 months combined. (I cried more than once reading this.) Drayven is also honestly one of the hottest shadow daddies I've read to-date, and there have been... many. Sure, he's the king of the Under Realm, but there was so much depth to him that he had to keep hidden from the world, but not from Selene.
I don't know what Lindsey put in this, but WOW it was just so good. I'd give it six stars if I could. I knew I loved this series, but Deathsbane just further solidified that love, and I can't wait to read the next in the series to see how the things we learn in the novella shape the future of Callan and Ivy's story.
You CANNOT read this before you read Godsbane, and this is not an Assassin's Blade "when should I read this" debate. It absolutely needs to be read after Godsbane. If you don't do it in that order, I'll never speak to you again. So read them both, thank you byeeee!
This may be a little prequel novella, but it packs a freaking punch way outside its page count.
Set before 𝘎𝘰𝘥𝘴𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘦 👈🏻 MUST READ FIRST and if you haven’t, what are you even doing? this novella gives us the delicious backstory behind the Golden Pantheon, the gods, a brewing rebellion, and how the world ended up in the chaos we see in 𝘎𝘰𝘥𝘴𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘦. And let me tell you…the lore breadcrumbs left ever so precisely…pure literary perfection.
“𝙄𝙨𝙣’𝙩 𝙞𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨 𝙪𝙨?”
Selene, Goddess of Light, and Drayven, the Dark God of Death—light and dark in a dangerous dance that screams Hades x Persephone energy. Bargains, sacrifices, prophecy, a forbidden love, and a broody, swoony MMC that had me SAT.
Drayven offers realms, crowns, thrones, and his nonexistent heart to the only one who SEES him. Meanwhile, Selene proves that goddesses and mothers are not to be underestimated.
The connection is so well written that it feels earned RIGHT from the very beginning. The rebellion sets the perfect stage for everything that happens after, with revelations that add so much context to the events of 𝘎𝘰𝘥𝘴𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘦. I absolutely NEED to reread 𝘎𝘰𝘥𝘴𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘦 with this new perspective 🙌🏻
Lore-packed. Forbidden romance with just enough spice to keep things interesting. A deliciously satisfying little appetizer before the main course 💋
*Thank you to Lindsey Richardson for this arc opportunity.
Deathsbane is the stunning prequel to the already well-loved story, Godsbane. This prequel was completely unique and, while still maintaining its own story line, leads us up to some very crucial moments in Godsbane. Being offered backstories to the complexities of the ruling Gods fostered more depth and insight into the connection they have to the characters seen in the original story, and I have to say, I loved every second of it. I gained a new sense of appreciation and respect for the trials and tribulations that it took to keep Ivy and Cal safe, and found even more adoration for why their connection is so powerful. This also showcased the true meaning of a parent’s sacrifice for their child.
The personified ideas of life and death, or light and dark, was beautifully represented by the two main gods in Deathsbane. Their relationship portrayed the natural and irresistible draw to one another, with a necessary and delicate balance to maintain. Seeing Death’s softer side and Light’s more ruthless side is a striking depiction showing that death is not always the darkest possibility, because what can be seen as the light that life brings, may actually blind you when you least expect it.
Tropes: 🖤Forbidden Love 🖤Hades x Persephone Twist 🖤Rebellions, Bargains, Prophecy, & Fate 🖤Worshipping & Yearning 🖤Backstory & Easter Eggs for Book Two
This is a short prequel novella but MUST be read SECOND because there are spoilers for Godsbane in here.
I’m super happy we got this little novella that gives us the background info on how the gods/goddesses (aka the parents of our characters) ended up in the realm that Godsbane takes place and the rebellion against the God King.
This specifically revolves around the Goddess of Light and the Dark God. While a brief story, their love story is still impactful and heart wrenching ❤️ You get a lot of Hades x Persephone vibe going on with these 2 as well. Light and Dark are meant to be on opposite sides…but when happens when they collide?
We have bargains, sacrifices, and the love of both lovers and parents, who will do anything for their children. Truths will be revealed and prophecies will be spoken, and leads us back up to where Godsbane left us at.
We still get spicy spice 🌶️ despite the short length of the novella and I love the connection and dialogue Lindsey puts in her writing for spicy scenes. You feel their yearn and love and passion as you read.
I can’t wait for the next full book in this series! It has me gripped in so much!!!
Deathsbane had me drawn in from page one, and I did not want it to end!
We were given such an amazing backstory as to why the current state of the world of Godsbane is the way it is and it helped paint a clearer picture in my mind. The amount of times many scenes had me gasping or saying, "I knew it!" had me drawn in even further into the story.
I absolutely fell in love with Selene and the Dark God of Death. They are both such strong characters on their own, but when they are together, the world better watch out. Their story was written so beautifully, and I really hope this isn't the last time we will see them.
No surprise, but Lindsey absolutely killed it with the MMC again! Drayven is so swoon worthy with how bad he is down for Selene. "You have my realm, my crown, my blood. I don't have a heart, but if I did, it would be yours." Like, come on! How can you not love him!
Selene and Arcasia both show that as mothers, we will do absolutely anything within our powers to protect and keep our children safe.
So I don’t know what kind of magic Lindsey put into this little 124 page Novella, but this tragic love story between the god of death and the goddess of life made me feel every single freaking emotion. Literally she’s giving me whiplash. One moment we’re having a super hot spicy scene, and the next I’m literally bawling my eyes out, tears coming from both of my eyes. I took a picture, but I’m an ugly crier so I’m not posting it, but this backstory prequel novella answers so many questions that we had about Godsbane and oh my gosh if you loved Godsbane and you haven’t read Deathsbane yet, what are you waiting for. You need to add it to your TBR immediately.
Also, I know this is only like 100 pages but I feel like I highlighted at least 25% of the book. Lindsey has a way with words, like I can’t describe how she puts so much emotion into every single word she writes and there’s no fluff everything is meaningful and the story comes together so well.
Death has been yearning after Selene for years but never wanted to act on that want. The scales remained balanced when light and death sit on opposite sides.
“If I cannot have her- body, mind, or soul- I will relish in the things and words that have touched her.”
Selene sister convinced her to join mikais rebellion against nobus. She reluctantly agreed to meet and learns that death is also in on this. They have a meeting for each of them to bestow a blessing nobus’ son at his birthday with death being the final one to bestow a blessing to make his son a “weapon“ to help with their rebellion. Selene makes a deal with death to let her come to the under realm for one day so she can show him her light and he finally agrees thinking it will scare her away, but man was he wrong.
This book is definitely Hades & Persephone vibes and I am here for it!! 🖤🖤🖤
For a short prequel, this story delivers so much… at its core, it’s about sacrifice, love, and loss, wrapped in bargains, secrets, and a forbidden romance that truly ATE.
This novella adds incredible depth to Godsbane and Ivy’s story. The emotional layers hit hard, and you can feel how much this history shapes everything that comes after.
Drayven and Selene?? I’m obsessed. A God of Death and a God of Light shouldn’t work… but they do. Drayven is swoony, powerful, and completely devoted (those magic tattoos?? say less), and Selene’s strength and fierceness felt like the perfect mirror to Ivy.
Add in some tension and spice, and this had me fully locked in from start to finish. I already want more of them, and something tells me this isn’t the last we’ll see of them 👀
🚨 MUST READ Godsbane FIRST — this novella contains major spoilers!
This novella is super fast-paced and absolutely packed with information. I loved finally finding out what happened with the parents and getting more insight into the gods and goddesses. Seeing the different realms from their POVs was everything. The worlds were beautifully described, vivid, and immersive—I felt completely transported.
And the romance?? Chef’s kiss. Absolutely no notes. After Ivy and Cal, I expected to feel things — and I did. So. many. things.
My only issue is that now I need more POVs from some of these characters because I got attached FAST. I really hope we see more of them in future books.
Anyway… I’m off to reread Godsbane!
Thank you, Lindsey Richardson and Bookkfunnel, for the opportunity to read and review this fantastic eARC.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Thank you, Lindsey Richardson, for the gifted ARC of this title.
OMG, this is how you write a prequel! It packs so much into such a short novella. Grab your tissues because you will definitely need them. I loved getting the backstory and learning more about some of the surprises we get in Godsbane. It all makes sense now! Haha. The story is filled with yearning, loss, love, and sacrifice, and it also shows the lengths a mother will go to in order to protect her child. The God of Death and the God of Light have loved each other for millennia, yet they are doomed to never truly be together. Their story is so heartbreakingly beautiful. And let me just say, the spice was definitely spicing 🥵
I definitely recommend reading this before moving on to the next book!
Sometimes a prequel novella is exactly what a story needs. Godsbanethrows us into a captivating world of political intrigue, romance, and adventure as Ivy begins to discover her power.
Deathsbane takes us back to reveal the backstory of the Golden Pantheon—power-hungry gods, rebellion, dangerous bargains, sacrifices, and the prophecies that set everything in motion.
It’s a quick but enjoyable addition to the series that adds a little more depth to the world. To avoid spoilers, I’d definitely recommend reading this prequel after Godsbane. ✨📚
Tropes ✨Forbidden Love ✨Hades x Persephone Twist ✨Rebellions, Bargains, Prophecy Fate ✨Open Door Spice ✨A Millenia of Yearning ✨Animal Sidekick
Deathsbane beautifully ties up the lingering questions of the world and characters introduced in Godsbane. Think of it as the origin story of the parents of the FMC and MMC — one that elegantly positions both characters exactly where we find them at the close of Godsbane. While set in a wholly different world and timeline, the bonds between characters are palpable, and the vulnerability each of them carries through their tremendous sacrifices is deeply felt.
The FMC’s power in Deathsbane radiates unmistakable Leo energy, and I absolutely loved it! I also found the central concept — that love transcends the boundaries of time and reality as we understand them through a human lens — to be a truly compelling and resonant theme.
5⭐️ This novella was absolutely amazing and I did not wanted to end! Can we talk about Death? He was literally chef’s kiss! 🖤🔥 I never thought I would be rooting for the God of Death but this novella was beautiful written in a way that really makes you invested in MCs story. Make sure you read Godsbane first since this novella focuses on the backstory and the events that lead to Godsbane. We get more world building, prophecy, and cosmic connections. I was already invested on what comes next but this novella truly sparked my intrigue even more. I cannot wait for the next book!
I received an e-ARC of this novella in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much to the author, Lindsey, for the opportunity!
The Prequel of all prequels. To understand the end, you must go back to the beginning. These words have never been truer. Thank you for the advanced reader copy. When I say this book was fantastic, I mean if I could give it six stars I would. This is the story about the God of the Dark and the goddess of Light. It is a story of yearning and sacrifice and just a wild ride. In just 140 pages, a one-of-a-kind story was told. And even though it was short, the pacing was perfect and the story flawless and it didn't miss anything. I am so very excited to see where this story ends.
If you haven’t read Godsbane, this book won’t make any sense to you at all - go away and read that first.
My god did this book rip my heart out. I never thought I’d be interested in a story that wasn’t solely Cal and Ivy but I am absolutely itching for more of Selene and Drayven.
Lindsey’s writing was impeccable as always. Packed full of teasers and little crumbs that link to Godsbane - I really love the whole backstory of the god leviathan. It makes so much sense now.
If you have not read Godsbane do so before reading this Novella. It is meant to be read second, as it contains spoilers about Godsbane. But it also may clear some things up. So I recommend reading it.
This Novella gives us background on how the Gods ended up where they did and centers on the forbidden love of the Goddess of Light and the Dark God. Their connection is spicy and heartbreaking, full of loss and sacrifice and gives us insight into the start of a rebellion against the God King.
"I am a goddess, but I am so much more. This is the true measure of a woman—the ability to carry on, to swallow down her pride and discomfort and do what must be done. I don’t even know the life that grows inside me, but I know I will do anything to keep her safe."
While this book is heavily a love story with vibes like Hades/Persephone, it's the maternal parts that had me tearing up.
We already had an idea of where we end up after reading Godsbane, but hearing from both Selene and Arcasia - the lengths they went to keep their children safe. It was beautifully told.
Deathsbane is fast paced with the right amount of world building to not overwhelm you but make feel like you know exactly what’s going on and you’ve been there all along.
It is so easy to find yourself fully immersed in this story and invested in the characters that you will devour this book. If you didn’t understand yearning before, you will, because you will be yearning for more of the love and that characters when you finish
This book does add quite a lot of context to why things are happening in Godsbane. My attention was held. My pearls were clutched. I loved getting to know the characters and how they interact. I must say, someone wasn’t clearly written about at then end and now I feel that person is going to come later and be a problem but we will see! Excited to wait for another book! Will probably reread right before the next one comes out!
“I know you would die for me but I need you to live for me.” Oh. My. Heart. How is it possible to feel…everything in the span of a 121 page novella? Lindsey laces magic into every intentional word and I was unprepared for the depth of love and sacrifice soon to hit me. As she says, the beginning is just as important as the future. Godsbane became so much more rich and emotionally rewarding with Selene and Drayven’s story. Also I love Corvus; he’s right, everyone loves an animal sidekick.
