I really wanted to give this new author a fair shot, but despite my best efforts, I have to call it quits after a random abduction plot twist—things are just spiralling out of control. Here are my honest thoughts:
The first 20 chapters of this book are a struggle to get through. I am increasingly unsure if I’ll finish because the MMC, Atlas, embodies the worst of the chest-thumping caveman trope. He neither asks Cora out nor expresses any genuine interest; instead, he behaves like an immature jerk. There isn’t much insight into his problematic behavior from his own POV chapters, just statements like, "I couldn’t control myself." Cora has legitimate concerns about his angry outbursts and the potential threat he poses. Given that she has a child to protect, I wouldn't want to be near someone who is clearly a walking red flag. It would greatly enhance the story if there were flashbacks to explore what turned Atlas into this brooding figure; perhaps then I could find some sympathy for him. Instead, he just continues to beat people up and be rude to Cora.
Here's a quote from Cora’s perspective that illustrates how she feels about him at this point:
"The amount of violence Atlas showed is concerning. What would it take for him to turn that on me? Would he ever hit me? I don’t think he would, but I never would have thought my own dad would be the one to hurt me so much when he was the one who gave me life."
By Chapter 43, my opinion of Atlas hasn’t changed. While he appears to be on his best behaviour in later chapters, the corny, obsessive, and sometimes downright creepy thoughts in his POV chapters are difficult for me to endure. He comes off as a caricature of the tortured bad boy trope, complete with anger and personality issues. He's always trying to control her subtly, picking her tattoo for her, telling her he’s taking her brother out, cutting her off mid-sentence, hiding the stalkerish notes she’s been receiving—notes that could actually prompt her to be more aware of her surroundings. The dialogue is choppy, the sex scenes are cringeworthy, and the plot is barely coherent. There are too many random elements, such as the bar fight, Kash's ex showing up at both the shop and the library, their breakup driven purely by miscommunication, and the abduction plotline that appears out of nowhere. Also, Atlas simply isn’t a convincing MC.
Here are some of Atlas’s unsettling and disturbing thoughts:
"When I get her back, and I will get her back, I’m going to punish her. She will learn she can’t walk away from me, from us. Noah, her, and I are a family, and as soon as I find her, I'll prove to her just how much of a daddy I am. Pulling out my phone, I look down at the screen and scroll through some of the pictures of her—ones I took with her and she didn’t realize."

Book 1 in the Exiled Ink series: Atlas and Cora This is a found family, possessive MMC, strong but caring FMC, boss x employee, “single mom” (her little brother), trauma healing, a “not so meet cute”, grumpy/sunshine, he takes care of her when she’s sick, OTT possessive MMC, workplace romance.
First 5⭐️ read of 2026!
First and more most I want to talk about the FMC, Cora. I absolutely loved her. She was a perfect mix of strong but sweet and she was so driven. This had a unique spin on the single mom trope but she has custody of her little brother who is 18 years younger than her (he’s 7) after their parents passed away and she is solely focused on giving him the best childhood and life she can give him.
When she has a “not so meet cute” with a stranger defending her from a jerk at the coffee house, who ended up being the biggest grouch as well, she has no idea how everything would change. Getting a second job to provide Noah with a better future, Cora starts working at Exiled Ink. And who is one of the owners? Our grumpy hero, Atlas. And boy oh boy, did he have eyes for her. The problem is that he doesn’t know how to express his feelings and puts his foot in his mouth and comes off as the biggest a-hole. So when he realizes that he can’t stay away from her and wants to keep all eyes off of her he has a lot of work to do to convince her that he’s a keeper. This book was incredible. I loved every minute of it. Such a beautiful love story between Atlas and Cora and story of love for Noah. I 1000% recommend this book!

Fantastic debut novel!

What in outstanding debut novel! There were just so many things I loved about this book. Great story telling with fantastic writing, this is a N/A romance that hinted at having a morally gray hero until the heroine's safety was in question - then he just dropped all pretenses and let that freak flag fly, lol. The author did a great job writing such a sweet story while having all this darkness circling, keeping you feeling just a bit off-kilter. I love stories where the main character is raising their younger sibling and this one didn't let me down. The backstory and character development was very well done and has me totally invested in all of these characters. I can't wait to get more and to see whose story is next. This book is definitely going on my best of 2026 pile and I'll definitely be snatching up the next book as soon as it's released. I can't wait to see who's next! Fighting for Fireflies was a random ARC request for me, and I’m so glad I stumbled on this hidden treasure. Atlas and Cora share a laugh-out-loud “stalker-light” romance full of large meddling tattooed brothers, traumatic pasts, snarky ride-or-die besties, found family, healing, unhinged love, and spice aflame with praise kink. Sprinkle in a kidnapping, violence, and an epilogue warm enough to melt the snow in this town, and you have an unputdownable standalone I can’t wait to add to my shelf.
I absolutely loved this. Cora was a great FMC, sweet and soft, gentle but stood up for herself. Raising her baby brother on her own, she takes a job moonlighting at a tattoo parlor. She’s sassy at times, but smart and easy going. I related to her instantly and enjoyed watching her growth throughout.
Atlas, Atlas, Atlas. Oh my sweet unhinged golden retriever. How I loved this man. Starting off grumpy and standoffish, we learn quickly Atlas has a ton of trauma keeping his walls up. But when he realizes he can’t escape his intense feelings for sweet Cora, he is all in. Like… all the way in. His internal dialogue, and sometimes external, had me rolling. He was the sweetest MMC I’ve read in a while, and yet so unhinged in his obsession with Cora and their relationship I couldn’t stop cackling. I highlighted so many of his quotes… and I absolutely loved how he just flat out stated outrageous things with a smile and a shrug. It was so endearing you couldn’t be upset with his unconventional behavior. I loved he and Cora together, and his relationship with Noah.
The brothers were some of my favorites, and I can’t wait for their books. The dynamics between them felt authentic and hilarious, and I wanted even more of their interactions and goading each other.
The action was intense and authentic to the tone of the story. I couldn’t stop reading when things went crazy and I loved how they resolved.
The author wrote connections and interactions seamlessly and in a genuine way. I believed everything I read, even internal thoughts, and it allowed me be immersed in the story. It was well written and edited and I will definitely read it again as a go for read! I can’t wait for the next book and to follow these brothers in finding love!!

Fighting for Fireflies was an enjoyable read with compelling, well-developed characters that kept me invested.
Atlas is an intense MMC — honestly, one of the most intense I’ve read in a while. There were definitely moments where I found myself wondering why Cora hadn’t slapped him and told him to f**k off already. But beneath that gruff, frustrating exterior is a man shaped by a difficult childhood, and once you understand his past, a lot of his behaviour starts to make sense. Under it all, he’s actually very sweet.
Cora, on the other hand, is a strong, independent FMC who takes absolutely no s**t — and I loved her for it. Life has dealt her some heavy blows, and she trusts very few people, focusing instead on doing everything she can to give her little brother a better life than the one she had.
Yes, both characters make some questionable choices (looking at you, Atlas), and communication is definitely not their strong suit at times — but despite that, they are genuinely adorable together and would do anything for one another. Their connection felt real, messy, and heartfelt.
One of my favourite aspects of this book was its strong focus on found family. It beautifully shows that blood doesn’t define family — love, choice, and loyalty do. And thankfully, this emotional journey delivers a well-earned HEA 😁

2.5 bc this FMC lets some weirrrrd things slide, but it didn't piss me off and he kills for her so have a 3 king.
The OW drama is a side character's OW, not the MMC's. The FMC is not interested in the cause of the OM drama.
The end veers into dark romance territory but it's light stuff. Except for, you know, the kidnapping, torture, and murder.

Woah. Thats all… woah. So good! 5 star read! I literally can not wait for the next one! I’m Literally speechless! So well written. Kept my attention. And left me wanting more!

Fighting Fireflies is the kind of romance that makes you laugh, cry, and hold your breath. It’a whirlwind of feelings that sweeps you up and makes every twist completely worth it.
Cora is doing everything she can to keep her world from collapsing. She’s raising her little brother Noah on her own after losing their parents, carrying the scars of growing up with addicts, and trying to build a life that feels safe. She’s strong, but you can feel the loneliness humming under her skin.
Then there’s Atlas. Brooding. Intense. Possessive in that bone‑deep way that comes from someone who’s never had anything to call his. He tries so hard to be indifferent, to keep his distance, but every sharp word and clipped interaction just exposes how deeply he feels. Their first interactions are prickly, he pushes her away, snaps, but it’s so clear he’s terrified of wanting something good. Growing up in foster care, he’s learned to armor himself in silence and ink. He’s been hardened by loss but softened by the people who chose him, brothers Seth, Rhett, and Kash, and the incredible Emma, who mothers with a fierceness that feels like home.

When Cora starts working at the tattoo shop, everything shifts. Their connection is slow, tender, and built on shared trauma. It’s two people who know what it means to survive, to protect, to endure. Watching Atlas step into Cora and Noah’s lives is honestly breathtaking. He’s protective, possessive with good intentions, and steady in a way that makes you understand why Cora finally lets herself lean. Atlas falls first and he falls HARD. Like so far gone for Cora, that he will do anything. Loved his devotion and his filthy mouth, he worships Cora and just wants to take care of her and Noah.
The found family element is huge here, and it’s done so well. Cora and Noah don’t just fall for Atlas, they fall into a community that holds them up. Cora’s bond with Atlas’s brothers is filled banter, genuine care for her and Noah, and shows the kind of loyalty that feels earned. On her side, she has Mara, Mila, and the Morgan family, who bring their own warmth and grounding. It’s two worlds slowly weaving together until they feel inseparable.
And the fireflies… I didn’t expect a symbol to hit me that hard. They show up like tiny reminders that even in the darkest places, something can still glow. And the saying, “lux in tenebris mea” is the perfect encapsulation for Atlas and Cora’s relationship.
By the time the suspense kicks in toward the end, you’re so invested in this little constellation of people that every moment hits harder. But the heart of the story never wavers: healing isn’t something you do alone. Sometimes it’s the people who choose you, who stay, who fight, who love without conditions that can teach you how to glow again.
“My heart matches yours, Atlas. In every way that matters.” She moves her fingers and pulls my hand to her chest.

The way I was instantly drawn into the story of Cora and Atlas. Both had a dark past but both worthy of love and a future. She was the light to his darkness , the perfect contracts for this couple . His firefly.
Cora , she was the epitome of a warrior . Surviving a dark past , she gave up her freedom to raise her brother . Sacrifice after sacrifice she was worthy of happiness . She earned that . The strength it took to let her guard down and let someone in was admirable. Her life was turned around when she walked in and asked for a job ..
Atlas was an asshole? Cora was right but he had reasons for putting his foot in it constantly . She made him nervous . Her showing up gave him a glimpse of a future he didn’t know was possible .. Atlas was a mystery . His hot and cold and guarded behaviour screamed issues and red flag but honestly behind all the threats and the morally grey-ness he was totally adorable . He loved , and he loved hard ! He was a protector , fierce and was ready to own his emotions . It’s not his fault he punched you in the face , you ignored his warnings.
I craved the tension , the yearning and the drama ! Both made assumptions about eachother not knowing they couldn’t have been more wrong . The side characters were amazing ! I desperately need their story ! Four troubled young boys found a home in the arms of the wonderful Emma !
Overall , I LOVED their story ! I can’t wait for the books of EACH brother ! I need more ! Desperation is real here! I’m so grateful to have seen this book because WOW !!! Who doesn't love finding new authors! Especially an author who brings a great, engaging story, full of fantastic characters you fall head over heels in love with, a storyline that you can completely fall into and is so relatable it makes you feel as if you're a part of their story. This is the story of Atlas and Cora. Both have been dealt a bad hand in life. Both are slightly "broken" in different ways. Atlas trusts his three brothers and his stepmother and doesn't let anyone in. Cora's priority is taking care of her brother, Noah, and she doesn't let herself enjoy life. After a chance meeting, Atlas falls first and falls hard. I absolutely loved Atlas. Yes his jealousy was a bit much. Yes his love for Cora is slightly unhinged, but I'm here for it. You can really see the evolution of his character. He starts out as a sullen individual that doesn't know what to do about his jealousy so he acts out. He changes into someone who will do anything (and I mean anything) for Cora and Noah. He's deeply loyal and has all consuming love. Cora is reluctant at first but gives in to the inevitable. She learns she doesn't have to do everything herself and she can depend on someone else. I could see how in a different light Atlas's behavior would be a red flag, but his character is written so well, I don't see it that way. He's waited to find someone to love and when he does, he's all in. His brothers and Cora's friends Mara and Mila, are all interesting characters as well. I'm hoping they get their own stories. I'm hoping Seth is next. He had a quiet presence in this book and I'm curious to learn more about him.

I gave this story a worthwhile shot because I saw an excerpt on IG that seemed pretty interesting. I know I heavily skimmed probably the first 20 chapters. It was quite boring and a lot of day in and day out routine real life motion. The whirlwind romance out of nowhere picked it up a bit for me. It just took way too long to get there. Insta love took all the joy out of the end of the book.
So no pacing.
There were times I was genuinely having a good time, but then there were also a lot of times when I was genuinely disgusted with the MMC.
I HAVE READ COUNTLESS BOOKS where obsession and possessiveness is hot, however, in this book it was uncomfortable. It must be an art form to write the former.
I kept thinking “geez this guy is delusional.”
Most of the plot was silly.
I didn’t finish the last few chapters. But I knew they were HEA so I was content to end it there.

4.5 stars 🌟 I loved this book! Cora is such a great FMC who has the best heart despite an awful upbringing. Her and her brother, Noah’s relationship is the best. She loves him so much and does everything she can to give him a good life.

I loved this debut novel by MJ Koons I stayed up all night to finish it in one read. Atlas and Cora had a good dynamic. Atlas didn't start off winning any points with his attitude and Cora didn't mind calling him out. Atlas has his reasons for being grumpy, but was willing to apologize when he messed up. When he finally got a clue, he was all in to win Cora. He took their relationship at her pace and never allowed Noah to be an afterthought. The supporting characters of #ExiledInk are great and I can't wait for their books. Oh! They also go to a hockey game, so definitely a plus in my book.

This did not play out as expected. From all the good reviews I read, I was expecting more - but ended up skimming the last few chapters.
The MMC was over-the-top possessive willing-to-be-a-criminal with his insta obsession, which might be perfect for some readers but it was a turn off for me. The FMC was okay but nothing in this story engaged me enough for more stars. It ended up a bit meh. The end was a complete cluster-f that felt tacked on just so the storyline could play out.
I’m glad so many loved it - but this was not my cup of tea, even if I do love the broody, possessive, tattooed bad boy type.

Found Family, workplace romance; this is book 1 in the Exiled Ink Series. Atlas is an intense MMC, possessive and swoonworthy who lives up to the touch her and you're done vibe. Cora is a strong yet sweet MFC, who is raising her little brother. Her parents weren't the greatest and she's out there doing whatever she can to keep her brother with her. I love her strong yet protective energy with her brother. Atlas falls first in my opinion though he fights it a bit. We meet the family of Exiled Ink and learn the story of how these men became brothers. I love that Cora also has her own chosen family and how they support her and Noah.
This is an intense story full of overprotective alpha-male vibes, while also giving you the found-family feeling so many love. I can't wait to read the next book.

New Author to me and I just fell in love with this book. Atlas and Cora the main couple had a not so great start. Can we say what an alpha man Atlas is, grumpy, has a past not so great but a wonderful role model in Emma you will find out who she is for Altas and his brothers. Cora man can you ask for a horrible past , she has a little brother. I can’t get enough of the back and forth of these two. I laughed, cried and loved the action. The characters in this book are great and I can’t wait for Seth’s book huh not Kash lol. Just the right amount of everything.

I knew the fmc was 25 after the prologue but the mmc age was sort of left vague or I missed a clue. I know he was 16 when he took a joy ride with Emma’s car but it only bugged me later they kept saying how young he was to be tied down to play dad to Noah. Pair that with him being a virgin I was thinking he was in the range of 19-26? Lol small detail but drove me nuts
The grandma/aiden plot was just a little much but I was on the ride til the end by then

Very promising new author. Overall I enjoyed this book and story. I loved the characters and I’m always a sucker for two broken souls finding each other. The story was overly long and drawn out and I struggled with holding my attention at times due to this. I am never a fan of a miscommunication trope which is thrown in towards the end of this book. Both things can easily be fixed as the author develops and I can’t wait to read whatever she puts out next.

HOLY SHIT. I loved this book! It had just about everything, that i love trope wise. There was banter. The spicy scenes were excellent, there was heartache and the mmc "saved" (you'll understand) the fmc. It had mt hear feeling for the characters. I felt the love and passion; the crazy/ psycho-ness. The care that was present in this book.. I WANT MORE!

Loved it!
Was completely unaware of how amazing this book was going to be. I’m not a fan of really long books mainly because I get so engrossed in them and it is hard to put down and well when you have a family to take care of it gets hard to finish. But I’m so glad I took the time out to read this book. Can’t wait to see the other characters get their story.
