If you had a tail what would it be able to do? Would it help you communicate to other people, help you get your food, would it help you sleep. I would use this book during a science unit that teaches students about animals and their characteristics. It can also be used to teach students about the structure and functions of such animals (living organisms).

This book is ideal for 2nd-3rd grade to teach them about the structure and function of living organisms. Why do certain animals have certain body structures? How might those animals use their unique body part to help them survive? Animals come in different shapes and sizes and require many different functions of their body to survive.

This book would be great to use in a 3rd grade science classroom. It teaches children how tails can be used in different ways. A way to incorporate literacy into this is to get the students to work in pairs and read together and talk about ways a specific animal uses his or her tail. Then they can write these uses and then share them with the class.

good photos. I would change the order of animals perhaps and also show more birds. Plus there is a sensitive issue of loosing tail by lizards - needs a bit more attention - I think additional picture showing new tail would help ;)

This book is a great book to use to discuss adaptation and the different functions of the tails of different animals. Teachers could play a guessing game and have students hear or read the function of the tail and then guess the animal.
