Some say the pen is mightier than the sword. I’d argue a fireball to the face trumps both of them.
This is it. During my adventures in the Halls of Magic I’ve met the Aspects of Protection, Nature, War, and Darkness, freeing them from their confinement and allowing them to experience life for the first time.
Now just one final Aspect—Knowledge—remains.
Reaching her might be the greatest challenge yet since her containment vessel is trapped at the bottom of the ocean. An unlikely alliance might be our best shot of freeing her. But even if I do commune with Knowledge and heal my crippled body, that doesn’t mean the adventure is over. The Halls of Magic is full of unspeakable horrors and controlled by unscrupulous mages who have used their powers to dominate Earth from the shadows. They’ll do anything to maintain their cabal, even kill each other.
The Halls of Magic are crumbling and its secrets will be laid bare. But will the price of Knowledge be too high?
With five Aspects/domains of magic, Serra, the Aspect of Protection and Healing, graces the first cover. Rowan, who presides over War, a veritable Amazon, was on book 2, despite the fact she was the third Aspect freed. Darkness, a goth in pigtails and the forth set free, was on book 3. Vivienne, Nature and Adventure, is highlighted on this cover, and presumably Mel, or Knowledge, who definitely has some steampunk vibes going on, will likely be on book 5. Jake's friendship with his gym buddy is seriously tested, the death of a powerful ally shakes the team, and more. The situation is grim, but Jake, his ladies, and even Dex the cranky cat and Index (aka familiar), have the hardest task ahead of them. Excellent editing. An overlooked series that deserves more fan attention.
I liked this book a little bit better then the third one and I liked the third one. The authors did a good job of helping the reader remember the relative parts that happened in the first three books so that the time spent between books didn't leave the reader lost. There is one aspect left to free and that is Knowledge. However the other mages know this too, and they are doing everything that they can to make sure that they either secure all of her spheres, or destroy the ones that can't be secured. However the shadow mage who has started helping them, knows of one sphere that is still not secured. Unfortunately the other mages know this too, and are trying their best to get their first.
This was another really strong offering in this series, and I enjoyed it a lot.
The MC's development from a guy that could barely function and whose condition made people stay away from him, to a guy that is starting to get powerful, has been an awesome progression due to it taking its time. Only by the end of this 4th book did it feel like the MC was reaching the realms of being OP. That gradual progression has allowed the characters to develop nicely.
If you like this sort of spicy book then it is a great example of a spicy adventure story. You can’t help but love the characters and root for them. Different from most spicy stories of this type there is real jeopardy …. It feels like none of your favorite characters live in a world without risk.
Ms. Hawthorne does an excellent job of keeping your interest with likeable, well-developed (no pun intended for the females) characters. There's much suspense, some tragedy, but still elements of humor. Having read several of her other books, I'm pleased to see she's lost none of her touch and am looking forward to Volume 5.
I love the imaginative setting of the Halls of Magic. I love the action and adventures. I love the interaction between Jake and Dex. I love the steamy scenes with the aspects of magic. I am really looking forward to the next book!
