Cowboy Delight is book #0.5 in the Cowboy Heaven series by Cheryl Brooks. This is my very first book by this author.
Do you believe in fate? That things happen for a reason? Lauren Allen might have said no to that question until that fateful day. She was on her way to Houston, Texas to meet her future in-laws. She and her fiance, Frederick, were supposed to travel together but his mother fell and broke her ankle so Frederick went ahead early. So Lauren, who hated to fly, decided to drive her trusty old car there on her own. Of course, on the most desolate road there could be, in the heat of the day, her car gave out on her. She found her way to a tiny town diner where she was introduced to Steve Williams, probably the hottest cowboy she has ever seen. Just looking at him made parts of her awaken that had never, ever reacted that way before with a man. She was assured that Steve was trustworthy and would drive her the rest of the way to Houston.
“Let’s see now…In one day, I’ve nearly died from dehydration, been chased by a tornado, rode a horse solo for the first time, and now I’ve ridden a cowboy-or maybe he rode me. Still not sure about that, but either way, that’s enough excitement to give anyone an appetite.”
Of course fate again stepped in to make it impossible for Lauren and Steve to make it to Houston so Lauren agrees to go back to Steve’s ranch. The chemistry between these two is crazy strong. Lauren really doesn’t have much experience in the sex department. She strongly cares for Frederick. He was safe. He offered her comfort and security. That should be enough, right? But he was slowly changing her into the sort of woman he wanted her to be. Wearing a certain type of clothes, styling her hair a certain way. Lauren has let this happen, wanting Frederick to be happy. But the time with Steve reminded her of the real Lauren. And Steve woke up something else in her that she didn’t even know she was capable of, passion. Wild, crazy, uninhibited passion.
“You might as well have been my very first lover.”
“I’d much rather be your last.”
Separately I loved Lauren and Steve. Steve was most definitely a smoking hot specimen of a cowboy. We get a lot of Lauren’s back story but we don’t get any of his. I was left wanting to know more. Together, these two generated plenty of steam. And I loved the silly banter they shared. I guess I missed the warm and fuzzies. They didn’t make my tummy do the twirly thing I love. Steve was about as perfect as you could get, though. He even cooks. He can make a mean coconut creme pie and they found very inventive ways to consume it.
In any event, I enjoyed the book and do plan to continue the series with book one, Cowboy Heaven. This was the prequel and was a pretty short book. I can’t resist a sexy cowboy so I definitely want to continue on. Just look at the covers of the three books. That’s reason enough right there!

2.5 - "Everyone has their breaking point. You reached mine." Stars.
I am in two minds with Cowboy Delight. This is my first book by this author, would I read another, in all honestly probably not. This isn’t my kind of romance/erotica/smut however you want to term it.
Steve and Lauren were ok as characters, what I really struggled with was the insta-everything that happened in the extremely short time that this novella covers. And by short I mean hours, not days, not even a day has passed by the time pretty much everything has happened.
In the space of about 6 or so hours our H/h have gone from a quick kiss in his car, having a race with a tornado and horse riding. To her worrying about fitting his huge piece of hot meat(yes I know, cringe) inside her lady garden, to him spreading her ass liberally with butter for a bit of back door fun, and then smearing her boobs with his home-made banana cream pie until he hits the home run and comes all over her face….
Continuity was also a bit lacking, as in the next paragraph they are curled up on the sofa watching a movie…
If you are looking for a quick, dirty, with a minimal plot and believability read, this one will be a winner for you. I kind of felt let down for the characters, there was a lot of potential in this story but it was completely bypassed for a few cheap thrills, and lots of side plots that didn’t really amount to anything.

When I saw this book by Cheryl Brooks I just had to read it as I've previously been very entertained by her Cat Star series but this is a completely new world for her. First it's not a futuristic setting but a contemporary western one so no aliens with unusual appendages but good ole American boys! Hmm could the author bring something new and fresh to the genre? Step into a series that's as steamy as Cat Star Chronicles but with a delicious western twist.
This is quite a quick read about Lauren making a road trip to meet up with her future in laws but she ends up stuck in the middle of nowhere( Texas) and really needs a ride. Step forward Steve, a widower and according to local opinion a gentleman but the chemistry between them is off the charts from the first moment they meet.Unfortunately Lauren does have a certain Frederick in the background also known as her fiance!What is she meant to do? Hold onto a life that doesn't really satisfy her soul or grab hold of this hot cowboy? Lauren might be conflicted but Steve sees what he wants and is determined to keep it.
Yes it's a shorter book than I wanted which meant a lot happens very quickly but that didn't stop it from being entertaining. Lots of humour and very sexy. If you don't enjoy games with food than maybe not for you but this couple made it work! I'm not usually a fan of stories that reward unfaithful behaviour but Lauren and Frederick are clearly poles apart. Suspend all belief and just enjoy the ride. Well written, could have had more character development if honest but the right man gets the girl so as a traditional western romance it certainly delivers!

This novella is hotter than sin! Brooks takes a completely plausible yet rather unbelievable premise and tells an unforgettable story that readers won’t be able to put down. Her vivid and in your face descriptions bring the entire thing to life in a manner that’s easy to visualize and to become part of. Brooks also pens some of the most tastefully done erotic scenes, while still maintaining an edge of explosiveness.
This is a very character driven novella, and the characters that Brooks introduces us to do not disappoint. Our cowboy hero is everything that a woman could want without becoming larger than life. I love that he has a less than perfect past, but yet a happy one at that. I did find myself questioning the female lead at one point in time. I mean, really, who does that? But it did work out for her in the long run, and after meeting her fiancé all of her actions are easier to understand. Her decisions also added to the absolutely priceless premise of the story which I definitely did enjoy. I kept thinking how awful the fiancé sounded, even though we didn’t meet him throughout the bulk of the novella. When we finally do meet him, he doesn’t disappoint. Brooks uses stereotypes to her advantage to draw a great many lines and distinctions that readers can’t miss.
Brooks definitely provides a healthy dose of steamy cowboy with Cowboy Delight. This quick, steamy read was definitely a more than pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

The biggest issue I'm having is the fact that Lauren is engaged. Before her old ass car breaks down, she is headed to her fiance's parent's house.
And the previously mentioned sweet, widowed cowboy is ultimately trying to steal this woman away from her fiance.
Lauren painted Frederick in a terrible light but I feel bad for him.. I just couldn't go on. I don't like cheating in romance novels and this is just awful. She was bitching about everything in the beginning and then she cheated on her man. That does not make me want to read more about her. I don't care how sexy that cowboy is, go dump your overbearing boyfriend before you start warming some other man's bed.

"Okay. I'll stay at your house tonight, but I can't promise you a definite decision in the morning. I've known Frederick for a long time, and I only met you today. You can't expect me to give up my whole life just like that, can you?"
"No, I suppose not. But I'd still like the chance to change your mind. It is possible to change it, isn't it? I wouldn't be wasting my time to try, would I?"

Lauren is engaged to Frederick. While on the way to Huston to meet him and his parents, her car breaks down. And Things happen (a storm, a twister).
This had a decent start, but rapidly went to hell. This had cliches (Lauren has never had an orgasm!), insta-love (in hours!), and cheating. I hate cheating. If she had verbally broke up with Frederick I would have had less of an issue.
Another issue is Lauren. Her whole life she has been a doormat of sorts. Always trying to be someone she's not to make someone else happy. With Frederick, she dresses in short skirts, heels, wore her hair up, so Frederick could "show her off." But then Frederick was rich. Who the fuck are you Lauren? I didn't have a clue.
I'll end this review with this gem of a quote:
"Sluts were sluts for one primary reason. They enjoyed sex." WTH?

Length: 103 pages
Plot: Lauren was on her way to Houston to meet her soon-to-be in-laws. Her car breaks down outside of a small town, leaving her to walk into town to the local diner to eat and look for help. Steve, a local rancher and widow, is able to give her a ride to Houston, but on the way, the encounter bad weather and have to turn around. That works out perfectly for them, as they are both attracted to each other, and he would like for her to give him the night before she makes a decision about her fiancé (over whom she's waffling).
Character development: Well, there's a scene where the H uses butter as lube for anal sex. Not a lot of character development. Or chances to buy actual lube, I guess. I actually didn't like Lauren that much - she seemed a little abrasive to me, a little mercenary. Obviously she came to her senses and decided that love was more important than a comfortable life with her fiancé (who probably always would have made her feel inferior), but the damage was done for me.

This short book by Cheryl Brooks is about Lauren who is on the way to meet her future in-laws for the very first time. Lauren decides to drive there on her own after her fiance, Fredrick, had to rush home to attend to his mother after she broke her ankle. Unfortunately Lauren's car breaks down in the middle of nowhere Texas and she has to walk several miles to a small town diner. The Waitress convinces Lauren that a Cowboy named Steve would be a suitable candidate to drive her to Houston because he'd be a gentlemen. Now Steve is a widower and agrees to drive Lauren to Houston while her car is being fixed.
During their drive Lauren begins to consider if agreeing to marry Fredrick is the best idea because she has some serious and instant chemistry with Steve that she's never felt with her fiance. Steve is feeling the chemistry and certainly isn't interested in acting like a gentlemen. Things really heat up between the two and Lauren is left to decide if she is willing to give up her life (Fredrick is rolling in the dough and his dad owns the company she works for not to mention that she doesn't live in Texas!) for someone who makes her feel the way that Steve does.
Ok I did like this book but there were a few things that bugged me. First the things that bothered me (so I can leave on a good note):
- Lauren worries an awful lot about leaving the security that Fredrick can give her and not much at all about the actual relationship.
- I don't really like that she seems like she wants to "try" out Steve while still keeping ole Freddy on the line. Seems unfair to both guys and I am not much one for cheating so that didn't do anything for me.
- Lauren seems to be fine with letting Fredrick twist her into some stepford type wife until she meets Steve. She's okay with changing almost everything about herself just for security.
- Felt like it would have been better just being a smidge longer because she could have drawn some things out and explored their pasts a little better. It wasn't needed but I would have liked it.
- The Butter..made me gag a little. That's all I'm saying there.
Now the good:
- That's some very sexy cowboy on that cover and that's exactly what I pictured when I think of Steve!
- I do like that Lauren was honest with Steve about her feelings regarding him and Fredrick.
- I also loved that Steve fully intended to make his stance clear and go for the prize regardless - gotta love a man who knows what he wants and is willing to fight for you.
- Little Skipper was a trip - Always makes me laugh to see big strong guys with sweet fluffy puppies.
- Loved this:
"The local women gave up on him a long time ago. Nowadays they mostly just gaze at him and drool"
"I've got a fiance waiting for me in Houston" I said as a reminder to myself "He'll be safe with me"
Kate snorted "I hope you love that man in Houston with all your heart"
"So do I" I muttered.
- "I raise delicious beef"
- She did acknowledge that she 'should' feel selfish about this whole thing so I guess thats something at least.
- There was humor sprinkled in everywhere so that you could laugh at and with them.
- Loved the drama at the end - HA take that you snobby bunch!

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
Yeehaw! Now that was exactly what I was hoping for. I discovered Ms. Brooks several years ago when I stumbled upon Slave as a Kindle freebie. As sci-fi erotica is one my guilty pleasures, I quickly devoured it and the next five books in her Cat Star Chronicles series (all that were available at the time) in less than a week. As you probably figured out, she is one of my go-to authors for sci-fi erotica. When she ventured into the contemporary romance genre with her Unlikely Lovers series, I was once again at the front of the line to buy and read them. And while I did enjoy them, her Cat Star Chronicles have reigned supreme as my favorite Cheryl Brooks’ books. However, after finishing Cowboy Delight, the Cat Star chronicles may have a challenger for that title.
As this is a novella, the story moves rather quickly and occurs over a period of less than 2 days. After a rather amusing (to me) sequence of events, Lauren finds herself in Steve’s pickup on her way to meet her fiancé’s parents – and no, Steve is not her fiancé. He’s just the widowed cowboy who agreed to give her a ride and yes that trip your mind just took to the gutter is right on point … thank you Ms. Brooks! When Mother Nature steps in and presents Steve with the perfect opening, he proceeds to demonstrate why bench seats are a good thing in a pickup truck while giving Lauren a preview of things to come. And as hot as that scene was, it had nothing on the actual sex scenes. Holy crap on a cracker can Ms. Brooks write a squirm inducing sex scene! She gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “Ride ‘em cowboy!” But when a new day dawns, Lauren must decide between a life of luxury with her fiancé or a life of comfort with her cowboy. Cowboy Delight is a lovely little tale of finding oneself served up with a heaping helping of steamy sex. This is one novella I know I will read again and I look forward to reading Cowboy Heaven to find out what delights Ms. Brooks has in store for the next cowboy.
Yeehaw! Now that was exactly what I was hoping for. I discovered Ms. Brooks several years ago when I stumbled upon Slave as a Kindle freebie. As sci-fi erotica is one my guilty pleasures, I quickly devoured it and the next five books in her Cat Star Chronicles series (all that were available at the time) in less than a week. A quick fast paced read that ramps the heat level up to HAWT. Lauren Allen is on her way to Houston to meet her fiance's parents when her car breaks down in the middle of nowhere on a hot summer day. After walking for miles, Lauren winds up at a little diner and a ride to Houston. Steve Williams is a widower and a rancher. Kate, the waitress, vouched for his trustworthiness so Lauren takes him up on his offer of a ride.
What Lauren doesn't expect is the intense reaction she has to Steve. There is something about him that calls to her. During the drive, the attraction between the two comes to the fore and Lauren has hard decisions to make.
Lauren's life is turning upside down, how can she feel so much for a man she just met? Does she take a chance and explore the feelings that Steve is evoking in her? Or does she stay the course and end up in a staid, safe relationship?

I am not a fan of cheating in romances, and Lauren cheats almost the entire story, justifying it with weird leaps in logic. Sure, Steve is sexy and hot as a hero can be, but I wondered how long it would be before she started cheating on him, despite his magic appendage. Lauren's waffling in the beginning was also a little irritating - she was still going to marry her rich fiance because her life would be comfortable, but by the end of the book, she was glad she was breaking off the engagement because she didn't fit in with "those" people. Keep in mind that cowboy Steve isn't exactly poor, and his family runs an enviable cattle spread in Texas.
I did enjoy the writing style, was never bored, but my reservations above diminished my enjoy of this quick novella.

This is a short and sexy read, with some humorous scenes. I am not a great fan of insta-love, especially when someone is already engaged, but it wasn't a great stretch of the imagination to see that the engagement was a mistake, and Steve was clearly a good guy! I liked some of the side characters, and would happily meet them again.

Cowboy fan
What an interesting story. The way it started I didn't think I would like it. But the Author did a great job of drawing you into the story. It has great characters and the story builds the story line of them. I wished that it was a longer book so that the Author could have built more into the story. But I enjoyed this book and I think you will to. Looking forward to reading more from this Author.

I loved Lauren, the heroine, of this story. Her voice was great. She had this can-do attitude and a sense of humor that I could get behind. And her cowboy, Steve, was pretty hot, too. I'm looking forward to reading more of Ms. Brooks' books in the future.

Such a good book
Omg this was such a good book I read it all in one sitting I couldn't put it down. Some parts could use a little more detail but all in all it was an amazing book.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, it was an interesting mix of fun and smuttiness (and I mean smutty in a lighthearted way, not a judgmental one). On the other hand, there were some things that bothered me, so I'm giving it 3 of 5 stars.
Lauren is engaged to Frederick, who is very wealthy and whose father owns the company they both work for. Although their engagement gives Lauren comfort about her financial future, their romantic relationship is completely passionless.
After her car breaks down, Lauren is stranded somewhere in Texas during a road trip on the way to meet Frederick's parents for the first time. She finds herself in a diner, where a chat with a waitress leads to Lauren accepting a ride from Steve, a local cowboy and widower.
Things move very fast after this. Lauren and Steve have insta-lust. But that's not the part that bothered me--I was actually fine with the instant chemistry. The problem I had was that Lauren makes the conscious decision to put Frederick on the back burner, rather than break up with him officially. She just wants to try Steve on for size before deciding whether or not to end her engagement to Frederick. In her mind, she's aware that she's cheating, but she justifies it since her relationship with Frederick is so unfulfilling, both physically and emotionally.
Additionally, Frederick has this weird obsession with making Lauren into some kind of Stepford wife or living Barbie doll. He heavily influences the way she dresses and does her hair. Lauren often refers to the fact that Frederick wants to parade her around wherever they go because he loves it when all eyes in the room are on her. It's...gross. Even though this makes her uncomfortable, she does it to please him. So when Lauren connects with Steve instantly, she notices that he seems to like her just the way she is: no fancy outfits, no stilettos, just her.
Since Frederick is so unappealing, it's easy to like Steve more by default, but he's also pretty likable in general. He's an easygoing guy with a healthy sense of humor. The hot cowboy thing helps a lot, too. His wife died two years ago and at first, Lauren thinks that he's not through mourning his wife. Over the course of the story, though, she becomes convinced that he's ready to move on.
I have one huge complaint, then I'll get to the things I liked about the book. I'm just going to put this out there: no matter how sexy you want to think it is, BUTTER IS NOT LUBE. No no no no no.
That being said--I really did like several things about the book. I read Cowboy Heaven by this author and it drove me crazy that the characters, who don't know each other very well, never use condoms. Thankfully, the characters in Cowboy Delight do. That was a relief. Also, the characters in this book are more realistic and less like caricatures. Their conversations sound more natural, even though the relationship itself moves along much faster than I would have liked.
This also goes for the sex scenes. They're incredibly sexy but they happen way too soon. I would have preferred a longer book so that the things that happen would have context and feel more credible.
So, while I enjoyed the book as a whole, I also had mixed feelings. And whereas the other book I read by this author (Cowboy Heaven) was so over-the-top and crazily enjoyable, the writing style of Cowboy Delight is more toned down. Because of this, the things that bothered me about the story prevented me from really loving the book more.

Love at first sight. Does it exist? I believe so. The question is - how many of us act on it?
I took a chance on this book because I'm a huge fan of Cheryl's Cat Star books. I have most of them. :) I wasn't disappointed. There were a few things that I found a little hard to believe, but hey, just because I hadn't experienced any of that, didn't mean it couldn't happen, could it?

This novella is the first in the Cowboy Heaven series and what a steamy start it is! A series novella often falls into one of two camps. The short story may provide buildup or the foundation to the story or series to come. It also could provide a full, but compact, story in the set. This story falls in the latter and, for the most part, does it very well. Lauren Allen is driving to meet her fiancé and his family when her usually trustworthy car breaks down. Walking through the heat to a local diner, she finds water, food and, unexpectedly, her cowboy savior. Steve Williams, a widower and apparently a gentleman, is kind enough to offer her a ride to Houston with sharing the cost of gas the only charge. The sparks fly instantly and continue to burn. Will Lauren’s path take an unexpected turn or is this simply a road not to be taken?
Being a novella, the author wastes no time in getting to the heart of the story. On the surface, Lauren and Steve make an unlikely pair but as their backgrounds and personalities emerge things start to come together. I really enjoyed these characters and found their conversation and scenes natural and compelling. The wry humour threaded in many of the conversations was refreshing. There was a lot packed into this short story and the steamy scenes kept on coming. Well-written, and definitely hot, the scenes involved what essentially were two strangers becoming hot and heavy incredibly quickly. A bit too quickly for me given the intimacies they shared. Considering her relationship status, and the number of relationships she’d had, this did push the envelope for me. Given that, however, the writing style was easy and fluid and delivered a satisfying, romantic story. A great start to the series – I look forward to more!
