These are the chilling tales written by a famous Hong Kong writer. Unforgettable and one of a kind. I have been 'eating' the stories, savoring the tastes and swallowing the memories it has created.
Slowly getting back into the habit of reading Chinese novels! This is the first horror/thriller Chinese novel I've ever read, and I must say, I enjoyed it quite a bit! The main question motivating the storyline isn't all that creative - "what price are you willing to pay in exchange for eternal beauty", but I appreciated the way the author wove in Cantonese sayings into textual fabric of the novel. I also thought it was sobering the way China's One Child Policy featured into the storyline of Mei Yi.
I remember this story via it 2004 film rendition - 三更. The imprint was so deep I immediately recognized the novel when I walked past it in a library 10 years later. Still chilling, Lee is an amazing creator. The characters' warped actions are rooted in desires we all share, and her stories allow us to fantasize what happens when our desires are taken to their darkest extremes.
Still fine but some of those words are only for people who speaks or understands Cantonese. But in general, those storys are great, even some of those might not make sense haha.
