I've been reading a lot of articles and books on depression and anxiety recently because a close friend of mine has been struggling with it. Usually the books are really boring and probably meant for other doctors and pyschologists to wade through on a good day when they can bear to struggle through the immense vocabulary of people with master's degrees. This book focused instead on talking to the normal everyday person and using his own cases to explain and elaborate on an issue. It was so, so good and it made me understand why depression and suicide is so prevalent today. It actually makes a whole lot of sense, once you read the book. Plus it wasn't hard to read because he was kind and it feels like he's genuinely trying to help you "get" it so you can help your friend/family member in the right ways. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has a close friend or family member struggling with depression. Yes, it may be outdated in the pyschology world (and in the real world, like whaaaat 1993?!) but it was still really, really good.
This is a wonderful book for the partner of a depressed person. It shows how to deal with the partner without getting tangled up in the consuming depression that some people have. I highly recommend it. There IS a way to live with a depressed person!
