Sometimes, to find the light, a man must first step into the darkness.

An army marches on the city of Celes, one come not to fight but to kill, not to conquer but to destroy. An army not just of men but of monsters, abominations shaped by cruel magic. And at their head stands the greatest commander ever to walk the face of the world.

Outmatched and outnumbered, the wanderer and his companions are forced to find allies where they may, looking to the criminal elements of Celes and to an ancient sect of assassins who, for the last several hundred years, have hidden in secret tunnels beneath the great city.

And if they are to have any chance of victory, if any hope is to be found, then it will be found…

Among the Shadows is a great addition to The Last Eternal series.

When amassing a force capable of taking on the evilest of enemies sometimes risk is worth the reward.

For Ungr this will mean travelling within the darkest of shadows.

Honestly though, not much could intimidate after all he and his troupe have been through.

This felt like a set up book building to what should be an epic battle in book 11.

Mixed Feelings

I enjoy the world that's been created in this series, but the books are too short. On this one in particular, nothing much actually happened to advance the story. Even with cliffhangers, there can be a beginning, middle, and end. Why not combine and release 2 or 3 as novels. I would be really disappointed if I'd bought a hard copy of this book. Even novellas can move the story forward. This book has us marching in place. It feels like filler.

This book continues the saga of Youngest, also known as Ungr. The last living member of the Eternals, a group of long lived people with incredible skills, and all except for him have been killed and replaced with replicas indistinguishable from the originals. For over 100 years has been seeking to prevent a magical sword from being taken by the replicas and their minions who could use it to take over the world.

Ungr and his friends are back in the city in which he was trained for his role, and they are facing the approach of a massive army which, when it arrives, has the ability to overrun the city and obliterate it from the face of the planet. They need to find a way to prevent that happening... and it isn't going to be easy.

You could read the book on its own, but there are a few things that may not be obivous without the prevous context. You would do better to read the rest of the series first so that you understand the whole back story.

After the battle with the fake Charmer, Celes is in shambles, and Corealis’s army of thousands has them surrounded. The Wanderer and his friends must scramble to muster enough fighters to have any hope of facing the massive army. They have to sift out the military and populace traitors among them, gather medical and ordinance supplies, and convince people of the truth.

I love how the characters are presented. There are some really interesting ones: Boulder, Haggarty, and Mother V, to name a few. Very frustrating cliffhanger! But then I knew the battle would take a whole book.

Fave scenes: the ancient tomb in the cemetery, the four factions, confronting Sir Galad, and Ung visiting the infirmary.

They called him the wanderer even though he was called something else amongst the Eternals. We know him as Ungrateful, though. And still fleeing with the sword the pursuers want.
Until Ungr got to Celes, a town Ungr had ties with going back many years. And an army started marching towards Celes. And once Ungr has to stop. And prepare the town to fight or perish. In two days time
And is probably why my heart started beating rather hard.
Author Jacob Peppers once again created a rather thrilling and suspenseful fantasy in the series that certainly will stay in your mind contemplating life...again and again.
Enjoy.

Another exceptional addition to the Series

In a brief interegnum, Ungr and his companions ready themselves and each other for the battle of their lives.
In the brief few days before the army of the Ur-Tactician descend on Celes, a movement is forming. Old enemies and new friends set the stage for a chapter in the story of the Wanderer where the world rides the edge of a razor. The smoke of the approaching armada is in the air.
And as the world holds it's breath, a massive deception puts Ungr and Elizabeth at odds as their trust is tested.
As always with longer series, a short peek at the mise-en-scène would wake up my brain cells.
Strong recommend.

The countdown to war has begun.

With only days remaining before a deadly army descends upon the city of Celes, Ungr and his crew race to prepare its defenses. As they navigate uneasy alliances—working with both honorable factions and dangerous enemies—they turn to powerful magic in a last-ditch effort to save the city.

Once again, Jacob weaves a spellbinding tale that keeps you turning pages, desperate to see what happens next. Rich with action, intrigue, and magic, this is an unmissable continuation of the saga—and a definite must-read for fans of epic fantasy.

Slow burner but still entertaining

Although it didn't seem as though much had happened, there was lots of character development and new characters who were introduced. It was again, a book, I couldn't put down.

Again, what an excellent series!

My thanks to the author for his story telling! It is like sitting by a fireside and listening to the story and when it is time, you have to wait for the next time the storyteller comes back to hear what happens next and you can’t wait.

War is coming

This book had a fair amount of intrigue and plenty of planning. This will set up the war over Celes and maybe the future of what is to become of all our characters. I’m excited and nervous all the same and can’t wait for the next book. Hurry, please!

Fast paced from start to finish

If you like a good adventure yarn then you will enjoy this series. If you have read the previous 9, then book 10 doesn't really need me to sell it and you are already enjoying it as much as I do.

Impossible odds

The wanderer seems to be dealing with impossible odds in this book. But that has been a theme throughout this series! Now waiting on book 11 of this series!
