Blair's Shadow

Rate this book
Perfect for fans of emotional romance, heated tension, and romantic suspense.

An emotional, heated, and dangerously intimate second installment of Blair & James’ story, where romance tangles with suspense and love is tested in ways neither of them anticipated.

Blair thought she had finally found her happiness. A love she could trust. A future she could see. A man who held her heart without question.

But secrets always come at a cost.

When Nate resurfaces with truths disguised as threats, Blair is dragged back into a past she believed she had escaped. What she tried to bury returns sharper and more dangerous than ever, threatening to destroy everything she has built.

James would walk through fire for her, but even he cannot protect her from the truths she has kept hidden. As trust fractures and loyalty is tested, their undeniable chemistry collides with secrets powerful enough to tear them apart. Desire burns hot. Fear cuts deep. And the shadows close in around them both.

Their love is explosive. Their passion undeniable. But love is not just something you feel. It is something you choose, again and again, even when the past refuses to let go.

Going into this book, I didn’t quite know what to expect, but I closed it with a lot to think about.

I started to really think about communication — and how the past, secrets, and unspoken truths can slowly creep into relationships. Not just romantic relationships, but friendships, family dynamics, and even platonic connections.

When we start keeping things from the people we care about, secrets begin to pile up. And while we might think we’re doing it to protect them, it doesn’t always come across that way. Often, the other person receives it as a lack of trust. Sometimes, it’s actually better to be upfront — to communicate clearly — than to assume silence is kindness.

I also liked that the book didn’t just highlight miscommunication, but also showed what healthy resolution can look like. Seeing two people willing to talk things through and arrive at a place of understanding was refreshing.

At the core, it also reminded me of something simple but important: say what you need to say. Don’t let your partner, friend, or loved one fill in the gaps with assumptions. Clarity matters. When there’s clarity, secrets can’t survive. When there’s honesty, it becomes harder for misunderstandings — or even third parties — to create division.

So while the writing style wasn’t entirely for me, the message was well received. And that, for me, is the real takeaway.

Thank you to the author for the e-ARC.

Now I need to take a deep breath because Blair and James’ love story is nothing but easy. Yes, you might have the urge to scream and shout, “Just talk!” but sometimes “it is not just talking.” The author portrayed our MCs as two messy people battling with their past—two people who have felt let down by the person they love and trust the most!

For Blair, she had it worst: Nate dragged and pulled her down. And like people always say, a bad partner will pull you down and strip you of all your confidence—and Nate went above and beyond! The bastard 😒. Blair couldn’t “just talk,” not because she can’t, but because she was so afraid this good thing she had with James would be torn down. And I felt that! Sometimes we hide, we shut down, we let things that are not supposed to be run their course—not because we don’t know the right things to do, but because we are just scared!

I love Blair and James, not because they are perfect (far from it), but because they chose to choose each other when the going got tough! And that doesn’t mean there won’t be fights or times they get angry. It just means that, even through it all, they had each other, and what they had was worth keeping!!

Overall: RUN, don’t walk, to read this book. The portrayal of keeping relationships in all their human messiness.

Thank you for this ARC.

Blair’s Shadow is a beautifully emotional slow burn romance that focuses on healing, trust, and quiet vulnerability. Blair is a deeply relatable heroine, and James is steady, patient, and grounding in all the right ways.

Although this is book two in the series and a continuation of their love story, it stands strongly on its own. I could read it independently without feeling lost. It is genuinely impressive that this is only the author’s second published book. The pacing allows the relationship to develop naturally, making the emotional moments feel earned. This story stayed with me long after I finished and will resonate with readers who love character driven romance.

An interesting read which brought up several emotions. It made me think about the importance of communication, the verbal and non verbal, about the danger of hiding secrets, about honesty and open mind, about loyalty and love.

It was an emotionally gripping experience, reading this book, which is both thoughtful and emotional. This character driven romance is the 2nd book in a series, but could be read alone as well.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Blair’s Shadow is one book that will stay with me forever, A love that can withstand all obstacles thrown its way. Reading this book and discovering the love between James and Blair made me realise that the past should not define the present. The ability to heal, forgive ,forget old wounds and close the door leading to the past to create a better world for the future was beautiful woven into existence, with each characters that has a role to play and a story to tell that will keep you standing on your toes till the very end . This book was written in such a way that tells its very own story from the first page, pulling out various emotions and lessons to learn and implement in our daily lives.
It was a beautiful read and I will rate this book 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️because I was more than wowed while reading, the raw emotions, the tension and suspense felt before scrolling to the next page to discover the hidden world of this germ
Anita Best outdid herself with this book.So dear readers, grab a copy of this book and get yourself a strong Man like James that will provide a powerful and safe kind of love, make sure not to miss out on this wonderful written story.

This was such a tender, thoughtful read. Blair’s Shadow explores love shaped by past wounds with care and realism. The writing is introspective without being heavy, the suspense and reveals, made it all worth it. A heartfelt, smutty, and emotionally satisfying story that fans of mature romance will truly appreciate, I did enjoy it.

“Love isn’t just about showing up when things are good. It’s about staying even when the truth is hard. And I want that kind of love. With her.

Love built on secrets or silence doesn’t survive anything. Honesty and trust are everything. And I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”

An arc review of Blair’s shadow by Anita Best

This is the love story of Blair and James who found each other after an individual heartbreak. What they had together is so special and sweet until the shadows of Blair’s past come into their lives.

I love how intentional James was and how Tracy was such a good friend to Blair.

I do not like how Blair kept a secret that almost ended her relationship with James.

This book talks about themes such as love, friendship, betrayal, manipulation and emotional blackmail.

If you’re looking for your next romance book to read, I’d recommend this.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Book Title: Blair’s Shadow by @
Rating: 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I am still basking in the euphoria I felt when reading this book. Blair’s Shadow is a story that stays deep within you long after you close the book. Anita Best’s writing style is mature and fluid — it just flows seamlessly. The book perfectly tackles themes of betrayal, trauma, low self esteem and healing. To be honest, this book healed me, story for another day😂😂

I fell in love with Blair and James from the first book (you should read that if you haven’t already). They’re an amazing example of how people keep their relationships alive in all the chaos of the world. They weren’t perfect, but they chose each other when it got tough. This reminded me of what one of my Pastors said that “love is a choice “. It’s two people choosing to choose each other every day of their lives☺️, it’s not exactly about feelings or those butterflies in your tummy. What do you do when the person you love the most hurts you by keeping a huge secret from you??😩that’s what Blair did.

It broke my heart to see Blair navigate her past with Nate, the yeye human stripped her of her confidence and self-esteem. I kept screaming ‘broooooo, just talk’ but then I understood where she was coming from. She was scared to lose the very good thing in her life and I think most of us have been there before.

James, my guyest guy — the man that you are. He was present, kind and extremely patient. Even when push came to shove, he handled it with maturity. I was very impressed. The chemistry between them was sizzling like freshly fried eggs😂😂I also absolutely loved the friendship between Tracy and Blair, it was so beautiful to see, and something I think every human being should have — genuine friendship and I think that was my favourite experience while reading

Overall , this book is a solid read, a huge masterpiece and I think there’s lots of lessons you’ll learn from this book. I highly recommend😌
PS: Who knows where I can dump that descendant of Adam called Nate😩I’m leaning strongly towards the fish that swallowed Jonah😂😂

Just finished reading Blair’s Shadow and I’m still reeling from the magic of this amazing experience.

This book picks up from where Blair’s Whispers ended. Blair is now a fiancée, trying to navigate her life — balancing her very demanding job, healing, her relationship and perhaps, life in general.

And James?? Ouuu, I love how this man always shows up for her. He’s present, kind and patient. Blair and James relationship was so solid and real, it wasn’t only just the butterflies, it was the underlying support, understanding and compromise, their relationship was not perfect but it was rooted in effort and trust.

Until the past comes knocking ( Nate )…… hmmmmm, I was so angry at frustrated and Blair’s silence about the whole situation even made it worse. The way Blair was holding back from James, i really wanted her to open up and trust him fully like he always did with her. But honestly, I got to understand Blair’s hesitation. For someone like Blair who has been broken before, it was kind of hard for her to fully trust again or lean on someone.

I loved how through everything that happened, Blair and James still showed up for each other even with the chaos of everything and that made this story so special and breathtaking. And the chemistry between them didn’t fizzle at all, their romance was steamy hot, the sex scenes were fire🔥 there were no wasted chapters at all.

This book tackles themes of betrayal, trauma, friendship, trust and healing. Anita Best writing is mature and fluid. The pacing of this book was good, the plot was plotting, the emotional depth was real and everything was so beautifully done.

The friendship between Tracy and Blair remains one of the highlights for me. Their connection and love of each other was so beautiful to read. Tracy’s presence added a warm touch to this story.

This book isn’t just a sequel, it’s a story that stays deep within you even after you close the book. This book is really addictive, well written with the right amount of everything🤏

I highly recommend you read this book😍 A solid 5⭐️ read for me. Kudos to the author for such a great masterpiece.

This book is the sequel to Blair’s Whispers. It follows the life of Blair and James as they plan their wedding. As the title implies, Shadows, their past keeps haunting them like one stubborn “peek-a-boo, we still exist” moment that refuses to rest.
One thing I appreciated was how Blair and James communicated in their relationship, which is why it felt annoying when Blair suddenly decided to start keeping things hidden. Like… girl, just tell him. He’s your man. She allowed people not worth mentioning to start filling in the blank spaces, and we know how that usually ends.
One thing I absolutely loved was how James made Blair feel loved even in his absence, especially with the cute little notes he always left for her. That man understood the assignment.
Nate… I don’t have much to say about him, but I just don’t like him, sha. Exes should remain in the past; he never should have shown up. The way he treated Blair during their relationship? Omo eh. Dearest gentle followers, please run away from toxic relationships and toxic boyfriends that make you feel less of yourself.
I loved the sisterhood between Tracy and Blair. Tracy is always the voice of reason, pushing Blair to think through her actions and standing up for her friend—even when Blair is in the wrong.
Although I was expecting something different after book one ended on a cliffhanger—something more thrilling, something less obvious—I kind of already knew how things would play out. Thank God for that plot twist, though, because I genuinely didn’t see that one coming.

I had the pleasure of reading the ARC of this book, thanks to the author, and honestly? This book pulled me in from start to finish.

The story follows Blair, whose past comes crashing back into her present in the most unsettling way. Just when she has finally found peace, love, and a future she’s excited about with James, her creepy ex decides to resurface, sending cryptic messages and refusing to stay where he belongs: in the past. As her wedding approaches, everything starts to feel unstable, and Blair is forced to confront fears she thought she’d buried.

Blair is constantly torn between fear and uncertainty, struggling with whether opening up to James will change everything. She worries about trust, abandonment, and whether her past will ruin the future she has worked so hard to build. The tension from her ex’s presence adds a scary edge to the story, and honestly, Nate should have stayed gone because his intentions were clearly not good.

One thing I loved was how Blair and James handled conflict, after the initial anger, they chose communication and were able to sit down, talk things through, and resolve the issue without dragging it any further.

I truly enjoyed this book and would absolutely recommend it. If you love romance with a touch of suspense and emotional depth, this one is definitely worth picking up.

4.5⭐

From the very first chapter, I was hooked. Everything flowed really well, and I loved how strong and secure the relationship felt in the beginning.

What I didn’t expect was how the story would shift. I expected something different (I’m sorry, James), but I’m glad I didn’t predict it right. Blair’s past began creeping in bit by bit, and with it came someone she thought she had fully left behind. The history between them wasn’t easy to unpack, and the secrets she struggled to share weren’t about a lack of love, but about fear and unresolved wounds.

One thing this book highlighted beautifully was the importance of communication in a relationship. Secrets, even when kept with good intentions, can create distance. I liked that when everything finally came to light, the conflict wasn’t exaggerated. There was hurt, yes, but there was also maturity. She talked. He listened. They chose to understand each other. That felt meaningful.

It’s the second book in the series, but it can be read as a stand alone.

Overall, this was a heartfelt story about love, trust, and the courage it takes to be fully honest with someone you care about.

Huge thanks to Anita Best for the Advance Reader Copy.

Thank you to the author for this ARC.

Blair’s Shadow is a powerful exploration of what happens when love is tested not by lack of feeling, but by the weight of unspoken truths.

This story goes beyond romance. It delves into trust, emotional vulnerability, and the quiet damage secrets can cause even in the safest relationships. Blair and James share a love that feels deeply intentional, but the past does not stay buried forever. When it resurfaces, it forces both of them to confront not only each other, but themselves.

What stood out most was the emotional realism. The characters feel human in their mistakes, their fear, and their need for reassurance. James’s steadiness contrasts beautifully with Blair’s internal conflict, and their connection feels earned rather than idealized. The tension builds slowly, making every moment of closeness feel meaningful.

This is a character-driven romance for readers who appreciate emotional depth, honest conversations, and love stories that acknowledge how messy healing can be. Blair’s Shadow is tender, intense, and lingering in the best way.

Highly recommended for readers who enjoy emotionally layered romance with heart and substance.

This book is a heartfelt romance centered on James and Blair, a couple deeply in love, newly engaged, and taking the exciting step of moving in together while planning their future. Just when everything seems to be falling into place, both of their pasts resurface, forcing them to confront old wounds and difficult truths. The story asks an important question: do they have the courage and trust to face it all together?

This novel truly delivers all the feels—moments of happiness, sadness, frustration, and deep love are woven seamlessly throughout the story. Blair is a complex and genuine character. She has a tendency to hide everything from everyone, making it clear that her confidence is still fragile. While this can be frustrating at times, it also makes her feel real and relatable.

James, on the other hand, is easy to love. He embodies the best qualities you could want in a partner—supportive, patient, and deeply committed. His character adds warmth and stability to the story and balances Blair beautifully.

Overall, this is an emotional and engaging romance that is well worth the read for anyone who enjoys love stories with depth, growth, and heart.

This romance novel isn't just a sweet read; it's a substantial journey into the complexities of relationships. The length allows for a deep dive into character development and plot, making it a truly immersive experience. What struck me most was the relatability of the characters and their struggles; it felt like looking into a mirror.

The author's writing style is engaging without being overly complicated, making it an easy yet thought-provoking read.

I found myself highlighting so many passages that offered genuine insights into communication, compromise, and understanding your partner. It’s rare to find a romance novel that offers such practical wisdom, but this one does it beautifully.

The author has a knack for making complex emotions accessible, which is a real strength.

This book is more than just a story; it's a guide. I'll be gifting this to friends entering serious relationships because of the valuable lessons it offers. It's a reminder that love is a continuous learning process, and Blairs Shadow is a fantastic companion on that journey.

Thank you for the ARC.

Love built on secrets or silence doesn’t survive anything. Honesty and trust are everything." My takeaway quote from this book and basically the summary of it.

Blair's Shadow by Anita Best is the second book in the Blair & James Series. It follows the newly engaged couple and the trials they face on their way to their wedding. Although I didn't read the first book, I was able to read the second one and still grasp the story.

Let's get into the main charaters. ‎Man like James! They've never made green flags like this man. He was the real definition of love is easy. Blair really had me mad out here, but I think I was more so happy that she's just really human in the sense that we all would do whatever we think is right to protect something that we love.

Not goint to lie, I shed one or two tears because of Blair's past, but I'm glad she got the happy ending she deserved. The character development and the plot were good. We didn't move too fast, the pacing was just right.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys romance.

18+ | Steamy Romance

This is a billionaire romance that reminds you that love doesn’t erase past wounds it tests them.

Blair’s Shadow follows Blair and James, two people who have survived unhealthy relationships, found each other, and had chosen commitment only for the past to come knocking.

What I appreciated most was how the story showed that trust is not automatic, even in love. When exes resurface and fear comes in, trust becomes a daily decision, not a feeling.

The book explores love, friendship, trust, and stalking, with enough tension to keep you guessing who is really behind the shadow looming over Blair.

And one time for Tracy
A true girls’ girl. Loyal, present, supportive. I’ll admit I suspected her at first, and I owe her an apology because she proved what solid female friendship should look like.

If you enjoy romance with drama, emotional tension, and spice, this one is worth picking up.

Have you ever misjudged a character and had to take it back?

This novel captures the tension of loving deeply while carrying a past that refuses to stay contained. Blair’s inner world is written with striking vulnerability, and the way her fear shapes her choices feels painfully real. James is patient, grounded, and emotionally present, which makes the moments of distance between them feel even heavier.

What makes this story compelling is its restraint. The conflict is not explosive for the sake of drama. It is intimate. Conversations are loaded. Silences matter. Every look, every pause, every withheld truth carries weight. When the cracks begin to show, they feel earned and unavoidable.

This is a romance for readers who value emotional authenticity over spectacle. It is about choosing love while learning how to be fully seen, and understanding that healing does not mean forgetting what hurt you.

A deeply affecting, character-first romance that stays with you long after the final page. I highly recommend.

I had the opportunity to read Blair’s Shadow by Anita Best. The book explores themes of self-discovery, emotional struggles, and love through the journey of the main characters. The story shows how relationships and past experiences shape personal growth and decision-making.

The writing style focuses strongly on emotions and character development, allowing readers to connect with the characters experiences. The story also highlights how keeping past secrets or tragedies from loved ones, even with good intentions, can cause more harm than good. It further emphasizes the importance of communication, honesty, and the ability to resolve issues through open and sincere conversations.

While the pacing felt slightly slow in some areas, the book still delivers meaningful messages about love, trust, and emotional healing. Overall, Blair’s Shadow presents a reflective and emotional story that readers who enjoy character-driven romance and personal growth stories may appreciate.

Blair’s Shadow is the kind of sequel that deepens everything you thought you already understood.

The emotional stakes are higher, the tension sharper, and the connection between Blair and James feels more vulnerable and real than ever. This story leans into quiet moments just as powerfully as the intense ones, letting emotion build slowly and intentionally.

What stood out most to me was how layered the characters felt. Their love is strong, but it is tested in ways that feel authentic and earned. Nothing feels rushed. Every interaction carries weight, and the emotional pull lingers long after you turn the last page.

This book is perfect for readers who love emotional romance, heated tension, and stories where love is challenged but never shallow. A beautifully written continuation that left me eager for more.

This book is so emotional! It follows Blair and James in this sequel as they’re planning their wedding, but their past keeps coming back at every turn—like, “Surprise, we’re still here!”

I love how easily Blair and James communicate with each other, which made it even more frustrating when Blair decided to hide things from James. At one point, I just wanted to jump into the book and shake Blair—like, just tell him! (The Nigerian in me thinks it’s village people’s doing, haha.)

James is totally finished for Blair. I love the sweet little notes he writes for her—they’re just the perfect touch.

As for Nate… he definitely should’ve stayed in the past where he belongs.

I also really liked Tracy’s character—she’s always the voice of reason, and I appreciated that.

This is a 4.5-star read, and I highly recommend it.

Big thanks to Anita for trusting me with your work!

I like the book , I like how it follows a couple that are engaged and are happy in the earlier chapters of the book. There is some love making areas in the book. I like the romance of the book, I like how it shows passion, love, caring . I like that in part of the book even though they are engaged they play a game where they are getting to know each other better. Her past came back , but so did the males past come back to. The book made me realize that there’s nothing wrong with me in the sense that we all have pasts and problems and that we are not alone. The book also made me feel joy, love sadness all at once. The most important thing that is book reminded me is how important communication is with anyone and being open and honest

This book had everything it needed to have. It was well written, immersive, emotional, and yes… deliciously steamy. The kind of story that pulls you in quietly and then refuses to let you go. I read it in two days, and I’m not exaggerating when I say I was sneaking pages in places I absolutely had no business reading. That’s how gripping it was.
No spoilers here, but if you loved the first book, this one deepens everything. The tension, the pacing, the characters, the chemistry. It all lands. I genuinely could not put it down, and I’m already wishing I could read it again for the first time.

I went into this book knowing fully well that this was a sequel to Blair's Whispers, that I haven't read (which I intend to) and not knowing what to expect. Despite that, I enjoyed reading Blair's Shadow.

This book portrays that there is a huge difference between a man who loves you and someone who is out to be a prey in the disguise of love. I kept saying thank you to James for standing by Blair through all the messiness. If something is meant to be, it will be , no matter how long it takes.

Although, I was a bit pissed when Blair kept the information from James, but I could understand her fear of not wanting to lose him even though I didn't find it funny.
I liked and enjoyed the overall story.

Okay, I loved Blair’s Whispers but this book, had my heart racing and my mind screaming. Am I the only one who screams at the characters in their head? I had moments where I was screaming for Blair to just tell James what was going on. The heart pounding moments of suspense had me flipping the pages so fast. Then the twists came that I did not see coming. I also loved the sister bond between Blair and Tracy. The romance was still so good too. I loved how James and Blair left little notes for each other and I of course loved that it had a HEA! 1000% add these books to your TBR.

This is a story of two people that are obsessed with each other until their pasts tested them.

Blair really stressed me out in some parts of this book she had me hissing and rolling my eyes numerous times. But towards the end of the book I started to understand her. Her past wasn’t rosy and she had alot of baggages.

I liked how James handled the issues, despite his disappointment he was still willing to choose her.

One thing about this book is that it showed the importance of communication, alot of issues could have been avoided if both parties communicated properly.

If you are looking for a swooning love story that has emotional depth and can be finished in one sitting, then this is for you.

Blair’s Shadow is a powerful exploration of how unspoken truths can strain even the healthiest relationships. While James and Blair’s love feels deeply intentional, the resurfacing of their pasts forces a raw confrontation with their deepest insecurities.
James provides a steady, supportive anchor to Blair’s complex internal conflict, making their connection feel earned rather than idealized. It’s a beautifully written, "deliciously steamy" story about the messy reality of healing and the courage it takes to be truly seen.
A must-read for fans of character-driven romance.

If I could rate a book higher than 5⭐️ I would. This is the kind of book for your heart. A complete romance checkbox. Every chapter was filled with enough suspense that I could not drop this book till I was done. It has the right pacing, and justified reader anger.

One of the things I took away from this is that you can never run away from your secrets, spill now or risk ruining everything you worked hard for.

OMG! This book was perfect. It’s my new comfort read. The sweet part about this book is that it didn’t shy away from the important tropes of the book. The vulnerability display was perfectly written by the author in a way that was accommodating and made aware.
