Chronicles the plane crash that left the author, and pilot of the plane, without his lower legs, documenting the changes in his life and relationships, and his eventual success in reaching the summit of Mount McKinley.
A great memoir of resilience defined. A bit lengthy and detailed for me, drawn out. However, it captures emotions situations of trauma, marriage, and perseverance that make you feel like anything is possible. Not sure whether this book makes me want to mountaineer more or less yet, I’ll let time decide
Oh don't bother. How much time was actually spent in Alaska versus all the lead-up to and hand wringing after wards. There were clearly parts of this man's life not mentioned, or spoken about in only the best life. This is a story from a single point of view, and it's not even a story about Mt. McKinley. Best I can say is that it is a story of triumph of a paraplegic who reached the highest point in North America. I just didn't like the route he took me on.
It's a quick read and a good one in the sense that I always thought 'I wonder how he turns out' so I kept reading. Some of his attitude and the absence of some characters should have tipped me off; this story is over but the authors life is far from it. He has plenty left to deal with.
Good story. Made me want to put on a sweater. Brr. Ed is very inspirational. A lot of people would have given up and let their demons get their best of them. He overcame this tragedy.
