Cape Trouble, a tiny Oregon Coast town, was named for the dangerous off-shore reefs. But some of its citizens seek refuge from their own troubles…which have a way of following them.
One night, in her upscale California restaurant, Naomi Kendrick overheard powerful men plotting a political assassination. To save her life, she made a bargain with the devil…and then ran.
Inevitably, she is found. More than one enemy descends on Cape Trouble to learn her secrets…and silence Naomi once and for all.
Detective Adam Rostov suspects she stabbed his partner to death in her restaurant kitchen. Pursuing her to Cape Trouble, he arrives just in time to rescue her from an assault. He conceals his real purpose in Cape Trouble to stay close to her. Because if he can’t keep her alive, he’ll never find out if she’s innocent or guilty.
Naomi’s instincts scream, Run, but too late, because Adam isn’t about to let her go. Not when he has begun to believe she is a victim and not a killer. Not when she is irresistible bait to draw a contract killer, a corrupt U.S. Congressman, and a crooked federal agent. And not when, despite all common sense, he’s falling in love with the mysterious chef.
Once Naomi discovers Adam too has been hunting her, she must decide. Run and keep running, or trust him to keep her safe? Of course, once he knows her darkest secret, he may no longer want to protect her…
Janice Kay Johnson is the author of over a hundred books for children and adults. Her first four published romance novels were coauthored with her mother, also a writer who has since published mysteries and children's books on her own. These were "sweet" romance novels, the author hastens to add; she isn't sure they'd have felt comfortable coauthoring passionate love scenes!
Janice graduated from Whitman College with a B.A. in history and then received a master's degree in library science from the University of Washington. She was a branch librarian for a public library system until she began selling her own writing.
She has written six novels for young adults and one picture book for the read-aloud crowd. Rosamund was the outgrowth of all those hours spent reading to her own daughters, and of her passion for growing old roses. Two more of her favorite books were historical novels she wrote for Tor/Forge. The research was pure indulgence for someone who set out intending to be a historian!
Janice is divorced and has raised her two daughters in a small, rural town north of Seattle, Washington. She's an active volunteer and board member for Purrfect Pals, a no-kill cat shelter, and foster kittens often enliven a household that already includes a few more cats than she wants to admit to!
Janice loves writing books about both love and family — about the way generations connect and the power our earliest experiences have on us throughout life. Her Superromance novels are frequent finalists for Romance Writers of America RITA® awards. Along with her books for Harlequin, Janice has written the Cape Trouble series of romantic suspense novels, and is about to launch a new series, Desperation Creek, set in rural eastern Oregon.
Not much happened. It was mainly their thoughts and then saying what happened after the fact. I hate Adam and his manipulation in the beginning and still found him to be pretty gullible in the end. But he made up for it which is why he isn't in the 'hero is a douche' category. In the beginning Naomi was TSTL but then she seemed to get it together. The last half definitely makes up for the beginning.
I loved the murder mystery, the romance, the characters were well written and I enjoyed every second of this book. No cliffhanger, I read as a standalone without reading book one. Loved it!
I was a bit disappointed by this one. I guess I expected a lot more from the reviews. I wanted less descriptions of daily stuff (i.e. what they ate). Still a pretty good book though.
Quote: “But I haven’t known how far I can trust you,” he said. “I’m pretty sure I want more than a couple of nights in your bed, Naomi. What I want…takes trust. On both sides.” This longing cramp was centered under her breastbone. She had to ignore it, too. “Then you shouldn’t have started anything. I don’t think I know how to trust. It’s…never worked out that well for me.” She hated knowing how pathetic she sounded., but she’d already told him too much about herself the other night. “I don’t believe that,” he said softly, his gaze laser sharp now. “I think you’re scared because you trust me.”
Another absorbing romantic suspense story from JKJ . This one, like Shroud of Fog, is set in CapeTrouble and is about Naomi who runs the local cafe. We find out what happened in the past to cause her to leave her previous life behind and what happens when the past catches up with her. JKJ always has believable characters and the romance and mystery are well written. Readers who like JKJ's books and fans of romantic suspense will enjoy this book.
This is the first book I can remember reading from this author. It started out a tad slow for me, but it picked up quickly. The story had plenty of action and the romance developed over time and was very realistic. Even though there is a book in the series before this one, I was not lost at all. I was, however, motivated to check out the first book since I really liked the sheriff who was featured in it.
I had to wait a bit longer for this books release then what was originally announced but it was well worth it. Adam and Naomi's Cape Trouble story was packed with suspense and romance and Johnson is continuing on the writing path that I see her going down in this area. This was a great book that I highly recommend. It was also nice to see some returning characters from the previous book even though this is a total stand alone.
See How She Run is a suspense romance story about Adam and Naomi. Can they develop a lasting relationship while one is running scared and the other is fighting for the truth? It is interesting how this story plays out. Kept my interest all the way through.
Note: I haven't read the first book in the series but wish I had. I believe it would have given me a better understanding of other characters but it is still good as it is. Looking forward to going back and reading the first book.
JKJ is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and this book just added to that. A slow building romance, suspenseful plot and complex characters are just what I've come expect from her and this book is no exception. I loved how the hero and heroine are vulnerable and strong all at once. I loved the Angel Butte series and I'm loving this one too.
Absolutely loved the storyline, probably more than Book #1, but the abrupt end....and I mean abrupt left me no choice but to rate this book Four Stars. At least we had an epilogue in Book #1. I feel we didn't even get a closing chapter instead an ending paragraph.....major bummer!
Better than book 3 (which is what I started with) but only just. The story is promising but the telling is not. The characters spend too much time in introspection and there's really not much action. As a result, I schemed through much of it.
Kudos to Janice Kay Johnson for another intriguing romantic suspense story in the Cape Trouble series. Intelligent, well-written, and subtly sexy -- this is a must read.
