Boomer wakes up to an unexpected surprise. He gets to ride on a bus to his owner's school for show and tell and it turns out to be quite an adventure. We enjoyed the book and liked the illustrations.
awesome book to read to students for their first day of school and I am sure students will find it hilarious that it is a dog going to school. I love the story line and the pictures and it is a story that I am sure most students can relate too.
Type: Picture book Genre: realistic fiction Awards:none Summary: In this book a student gets to take his dog Boomer to school with him. Boomer stays with him the whole day. They do reading, writing, center time, and even recces together, towards the end of the book Boomer's owner even gets to introduce him to his class and finally they get to ride the bus home! In the beginning of the book, Boomer is really confused by the school, but by the end, he gets the hang of it and begins enjoying school. 1 critique: The one thing I did not like about the book is that you do not know any other characters names. The only character you could work with is Boomer because no one else is named or developed. questions for read aloud: What would you bring to school if we had a show and tell? If you were aloud to bring your pet to school what stories would you tell? craft element: I would use this sometime in the beginning of the school year as a twist on your average first day of school jitters book and how to and not to behave at school.
Boomer Goes to School is on my favorite book shelf because I love all stories with dogs and it is a great social story helping children with what to expect when at school. The pictures in the story are very realistic and paints a very true, vivid picture of what school looks like. Boomer found school to be a little confusing at first with all the different things that go on in a day, but after awhile he found that it was a great place for friends, learning, and lots of fun.
In the reading classroom, this book is great for pre-kindergartners who are curious on what their siblings are doing during the day and gives the children a nice idea of what to expect when they are in kindergarten the following year.
" Boomer Goes to School" will be a fun favorite in your classroom! I loved this book because it's very relatable among new students or students who are new to a school. In one of the illustrations, the book shows a mini map of the school. As a fun writing and math prompt, I'd have students design their own layout of our school, which they could give to a friend if they needed some help. I also love the creativity McGeorge incorporated in this book! Additionally, I think this would be a great book to use when teaching on sequencing, since the events seem to be pretty sequenced in the book.
This book is so cute. I love animals, especially dogs, and this is a good one for dog lovers. I like how the story elements come together toward the end and you find out that the boy took his dog to school for show and tell. Very clever. This book would be a great way to discuss pets with children. And maybe discuss different types of pets and how those pets might act if they went to school for a show and tell.
Adorable book about Boomer's trip to school. I remember loving this book as a child (I even had two copies for some reason) and I still enjoy it as a adult. Beautiful, fun illustrations. Simple story. Boomer is the best.
While the story itself is pretty straightforward, the artwork really brings the characters and events to life. Love it. Such a great book.
We've all seen or had a student that doesn't enjoy school as much as our other friends. I think that this is the perfect book to show that school is exciting and all the amazing things that children can do at school. You can even show that special friend that school is so exciting that even dogs like Boomer enjoy all of the activities!
This book is a helpful tool to read to your child on his/her first day of school. Or even as a teacher you'll be able to read it so the children in your classroom know what to expect. Children are able to relate to the main character because of his mixed emotions of fear and worry. Students will be able to come with problem solving skills for Boomer so he's not so scared.
This is a great first week of school book to get the children excited about all the things they will be doing when they get to school! We can read it then talk about what we would like to do while we are in school! It is a cute story with super colorful illustrations that really make it more exciting to read!
A gift from a Golden Retriever Rescue group picnic, I couldn’t turn it down despite not being the target audience (I teach HS-not elementary!). A sweet children’s book but does not really have the strengths of a solid elementary book to teach kids to love reading. Thin on clarity and message, but it’s a golden retriever going to school, so that’s worth something.
A Golden retriever goes to school and exhibits very typical retriever behavior (Yay! Food! Yay! People! Yay! Things!) until he learns the proper way to behave in the classroom.
This will be a book that both new students and the owners of large, active dogs can instantly relate to!
The story is about a dog named Boomer who goes to school for the first time. This book can lead to discussion about different emotions. While reading this story the kids can talk about the way they felt the first day of school. They can also talk about what their favorite part of school is.
This book is about a dog going to school and expected to sit still! This did not work at first but after a while boomer calmed down and sat still to listen to a book being read. Love this book good for all children.
I liked this book. I enjoy how we see the school day from boomer's perspective. I am surprised the teacher did not object to boomer running around the class. I think this book was good.
this book takes you on the adventure of a dog named boomer. He's like other kids and finds school confusing at first until he discovers all is has to offer
This book is for children who are learning how to read. This book is about a child to bring in a dog for school and tell. I would read this book to children 5 and up.
A very interesting book about a dog going to school. In the very end, it explains how the child brought the dog in to show and tell. It is a great book for beginning readers.
Boomer is a dog who wants to go to school for show-and-tell. He goes with his boy owner and they eat lunch, play outside during recess, paint during art, listen during story time, and finally present themselves during show-and-tell. All the kids love Boomer. This would be a silly book to read during the first weeks of school. It's really about all the joys that can be had and found during the school day, so I think this would be a good introduction book to kindergartners or first graders. Students could bring something in the next day after reading this book and have their own show-and-tell (although not an actual pet). Helps build community in the classroom and everyone gets to know one another better.
This book is cool because it gives the 'low-down' on an average day in the classroom. It shows how school works, looking from a different perspective and without the young ones realizing it, they are really learning about how their day will go while they are in school (for the most part). I think any book that talks about school in any kind of way is a great book to read to the young ones before they begin school. I think it helps them not be so anxious because it preps them for the basics of how school works. For the children who have never been in a school setting before pre-k or kindergarten, going to school is a huge change from their daily activities at home and it can be nerve-wrecking for them.
This is an amazing story to read for the first few days at a new school. Just as Boomer had to be shown around school, students have to be shown around the school. Many people learn better by teaching, so after students have a decent understanding of the school layout have them bring a stuffed animal of choice to show around the school. Incorporate this into writing. Have students share what they thought was important to show their pet and why they felt that was an important part of the school. Students will love to connect the book to life and will enjoy feeling like the tour guide during the day.
Boomer Goes to School is an excellent book to read to students that are having their first day of school, there will be new ways of doing things that they may be unfamiliar with but like Boomer, they will get the hang of it. Children, I think, need things in school that they can relate to and this book is definitely something that can be an icebreaker for these students, the teacher can read this book and talk about some of the things that Boomer and the children may have felt on the first day of school, it allows the children to express their feelings and the teacher can address some of this issues and make the children feel more comfortable.
What child doesn't want to take their dog to school? I know I always wanted to! This book has beautiful and vivid illustrations. After reading this book your students can brainstorm where they would take their favorite animal in the school and then write a story about the day their favorite animal went to school! To make the assignment a bit more challenging you could have them think critically how they animal could get in the school if they had an animal like a giraffe, a bear, a lion or a elephant!
A book to read about show-and-tell. Why did he bring Boomer to school? Do you think we would be able to bring our pets to school? Why? What were they learning about in this classroom? Comprehension questions. Writing: If you could bring anything you wanted to school for show and tell, what would it be and why? What do you think would happen at school? A fun book, but not a whole lot of "meat" to it. Kids will enjoy it because of the content, so a good book to include in my classroom library for students who love their dogs.
A child who loves dogs will enjoy reading this book. Boomer is a dog that goes to school with his owner. I would read this book with student and talk about what pet they have or would like to have. I would also read this book to students on the first day of school before introducing them to the class pet. This would be a good book choice to slide to a child that loves dogs during silent reading time.
The text depicts the school day as being divided into distinct sections. However, the illustrations depict a classroom that is unorganized but I don’t think children will notice that a soccer ball, paint, and blocks should not all be in the same book case. The children will notice that Boomer has trouble sitting still and being quiet during large group. And adults should notice that Boomer’s issue is transitioning.
Boomer Goes To School would be a good book to read during the first week of school to students. We can all remember how nerve wrecking it was during the first week of school, especially for pre-k and kindergarten students. With this book, students are able to relate to Boomer and see how his school expereince turned out.
This book is a great light hearted story about a dog going to school. This has brought comfort to several children on their first or last day of school at my center. I would use this book in the classroom in the art center so that children could create a picture of what their first day of school is/or may be like.
