Lauren and Alexander's journey continues in the second novel in Pippa Croft's Oxford Blue romance series. It's the beginning of a new term at Wyckham College, Oxford, and a fresh start for Lauren Cusack. Her fingers were badly burnt when a whirlwind romance with gorgeous English aristocrat, Alexander Hunt, became too hot to handle - and now she's determined to keep her distance. Her resolve is shaken when Alexander appears on her doorstep - he's been completely torn apart by some devastating news. Lauren knows that she should stay away, but their chemistry is undeniable and she soon finds herself back in Alexander's arms. Can Lauren handle the drama that comes with Alexander Hunt? Or will she have to sacrifice the most exhilarating passion she's ever known . . . Fans of E L James, Tammara Webber and Beth Kery won't be able to get enough of Pippa Croft's Oxford Blue romance series. The First Time We Met and The Second Time I Saw You are the first two novels in the series, followed by Third Time Lucky, which is also available to pre-order from Penguin. Pippa Croft is the pen name of an award-winning romantic novelist. After studying English at Oxford, she worked as a copywriter and journalist before writing her debut novel, which won the RNA's New Writers' award and was later made into a TV movie. She lives in a village in the heart of England with her husband and daughter.

I fell in love with Lauren and Alexander in the first book and my love for them continues.
The Second Time I Saw You starts on a rather sad note, but do not let that put you off.
Theirs is a passionate story filled with conflict and arseholes on all sides. It's addictive, compelling, sexy, and just as Lauren and Alexander can't get enough of each other, I can't get enough of them. This is the book I stayed up extra late to read and woke up extra early to continue.
I'll be honest, together they are a bit of a train-wreck, as bad as they are good for each other. But this is as good as a guilty pleasure will ever get, and when it's so hot who can complain?
I love Immy and Emma, even though they aren't the main characters. They compliment Lauren and Alexander so well.
I absolutely love to hate Rafe and Valentina. The drama and bitchiness is immense. Even if Rafe does make me feel physically sick!
I would definitely say you should read this series in order. There is so much that goes on in each book that you'll get so much more out of it. Plus, the passion just builds and builds. I'd call this New Adult meets Downton Abbey sexiness. Yum.
I'm itching for the second book already!
I received a copy of this for free via NetGalley for review purposes.
3 - The Hunt grenade has exploded in my face - twice, in fact - and I've finally learned my lesson. Stars.
The Second Time I Met You begins with Lauren Cusack returning to Oxford after spending the Christmas Holidays back in Washington with her family.
On returning she vows to avoid Alexander Hunt, and not have any further contact with him in favour of devoting her time to pursuing her studies, after their epic falling out at the end of the last term. A vow, which unsurprisingly crumbles into oblivion almost immediately after her arrival, when he turns up on her doorstep with some absolutely devastating personal news, and asking for her help and support.
This is a weird review for me to write in the fact that I disliked almost every character and a large amount of the storyline contained in the book. That-said I still couldn’t put it down; it was literally like reading a car crash from almost the beginning to the very end.
And funnily enough the author actually uses the analogy when the shit hits the fan towards the end of the book.
I’ve never been in an auto accident but I’ve heard people say that just before the moment of impact, their brain slows everything down and they see the inevitable happen, but they are powerless to do anything to stop it...
The above is pretty good sum up of how I felt whilst reading. The one thing I do disagree with is that it was unavoidable, and it was the part of the story that I had a massive problem with. I can 100% say that no matter what the repercussions of the revelation causing, that I wouldn’t and if I am honest that whole part of the book left me feeling a little skeevy.
... ”You Knew?” ... Bang. I fly up into the air, tumbling over and over...
The whole Professor ‘perv’ Rafe, and ex-fiancee Valentina drama continues to play out through the book as well, but it felt like it had been added as an afterthought, more of a sideline to the drama with Emma, rather than because it really had any actual relevance. You are also given the treat of more interaction from the frightfully wanky Rupert, and thankfully one of the few characters I actually liked – Immy.
There were however a few things I did like about the book, the Britishisms and Britishness of the locations and people that run through it were refreshing...
”Are you going to get your knickers off, or do I have to do it for you>”
“I apologise for being a git earlier.”
I also have a huge soft spot for a certain Alexander Hunt, and still desperately want to know how this couple’s story is going to conclude.
”If Bear Grylls does it, it must be true.”

This Oxford Blue series is seriously addictive! I couldn't put it down. It was the wee small hours of this morning when I finished it, and there aren't many books these days that give me a book hangover :D
The Second Time I Saw You starts more or less where The First Time We Met left off. Each book can be read as a stand alone but I'd recommend reading in order to fully appreciate the storyline and character development.
Lauren Cusack is back in Oxford after spending Christmas at home in Washington DC. It's the start of Hilary term (for those who like to know this stuff the series covers an academic year at the fictional Wyckham College in Oxford, and each book covers a term: book #1 is Michaelmas term, this book is Hilary term and I assume book #3 Third Time Lucky will be Trinity term).
The description pretty much outlines the set up so I won't repeat it, but I was pleased to find no meandering back story to plough through at the start. We're straight back into the action and the pace never lets up from there. The style is smooth and flowing with plenty of sharp dialogue and plot twists. Lauren and Alexander's relationship - edgy, passionate, complicated, obsessive - is wonderfully written and the sex is appropriately hot and impulsive for a couple who are finding it difficult to be together yet impossible to stay apart. The Mile High Club scene is a highlight ;0)
But it's the setting, the twists and turns and the secondary characters that make this series a cut above other steamy contemporaries I've read. At one point Lauren, unwillingly cast in the role of confidante, finds herself between a rock and a hard place as a result. I really felt for her. If she spills the beans, she'll let down someone who is very vulnerable and emotionally fragile. If she keeps quiet, she risks shattering someone else's trust. I'm not going into any more detail though as it would be a major spoiler and I try to review without them whenever possible.
One final thing...the ending is perhaps the best cliffhanger I've encountered in a series (again, no spoilers, you'll just have to read and find out!!) and all I can say is thank goodness Third Time Lucky is out in October. I can't wait to see what happens next!
(I know the author personally but I did not receive an ARC and purchased my own copy. All opinions are my own, I was not required to write a positive review.)
The Second Time I Saw You, The Oxford Blue Series, Pippa Croft Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Stupidly I had another Muppet moment, and it wasn't til I was reading this and kept thinking there was a lot of assumed knowledge, that I realised this was book two and book one is The First Time We Met which I haven't read. I will though, as this is such a terrific story that its one for my rereading/keeper files. Despite not having read the first book it was easy to pick up the story, and like Lauren I was in love/lust with Alexander, but puzzled at his sudden character changes. Then there's his younger sister, having secrets that Lauren found out, but she was asked not to tell Alexander...a difficult position – one of those where you feel for her as whichever she does is going to be wrong, and you know the secrets will come out just at the wrong moment. Then there's the wonderfully wicked ex – she's a perfect bitch, and I do so love one of those, adds much needed ( for me) drama, along with Lauren's friend Scott....There's snippets of daily life, tutorials at college with the sleazy Professor Rafe, college parties and other functions, Alexander’s need for support at a really difficult time, and she needs to learn how to handle his moods and secrets, it all adds up to a romance that's seriously hot and sexy, tantalising and erotic, and full of the deep drama that I love. A cracking read, and I’m really keen to read the first book to catch up, and then to find out how the story ends. It's a cliffhanger ending, but not a too horrible one, a mystery and it's dramatic but there's a hint of good in it too....What I hate about trilogies and duos is the long wait between books, but this one seems to have been brought out in a better way for readers like me, with book one out 14 Feb, book two 22 May and book three due 11 September so reasonably short intervals. I hate waiting 18 months or more between parts, I’ve lost the momentum then...but with a good trilogy like this, out fairly quickly, its also a pleasure to re-read all three parts back to back once they're all out. Well priced too at £3.99 for parts around 380-400 pages. Stars: Fabulous read, just what a love so a full five :-) ARC supplied via Netgalley
The Second Time I Saw You follows on from The First Time We Met although it can be read as a standalone. Lauren is beginning the new term at Oxford determined to move on from Alexander Hunt. Of course, Pippa throws us a great twist right at the beginning and Lauren’s intentions don’t come out as planned. I loved The First Time We Met and didn’t think it could get much better but I was so pleased it did.
This book is told from Lauren’s POV who gives us the perfect insight into her and Alexander’s steamy and chaotic relationship. Lauren is very likeable and Alexander, who at times felt a bit cold in the first book, is much easier to get into the mind of as he has developed a lot in this book. I liked how even though the story was told from Lauren’s perspective, we could still learn a lot about Alexander and see the more emotional side of him. I also loved the role Alexander’s sister Emma played in this book. Her relationship with Lauren was always set to cause some issues for Lauren and Alexander since teenage girls are never that easy to handle…
The journey in this book was a bit of a rollercoaster ride and I loved all the little twists. The pacing was great, helping me become totally gripped in Lauren and Alexander’s story and then when it ended… I just love how the author builds everything up throughout the whole book and then surpasses herself with an even better ending. Of course I’m now itching to get my hands on the next novel but then that’s a skill in itself… Pippa has written an enthralling plot and some great characters – characters you can almost see in real life and make relations to. The Second Time I Saw You was a wonderful, addictive book and I can’t wait for more.
Having read 'The second time I saw you', I'm still not absolutely sure if it's an erotic novel with a good storyline or a good story with lots of steamy sex; either way it will appeal to readers who enjoy both. I particularly enjoyed getting to know Lauren and although it is possible to read this book as a standalone, I really wish I'd read the first book in the series so that I could have followed the story from the beginning. The backdrop of Oxford University is very well- portrayed as is the aristocratic life of Alexander. There are some excellent minor characters too, notably Professor Rafe. He is so slimy that I wanted Lauren to report him yet he just manages to stay on the right side of sleaziness to avoid this. Alexander's ex-girlfriend, the bitchy Valentina, is another character whom you will love to hate almost as much as Rupert. On the other hand, I liked the way that Alexander wants to take care of his younger sister but is pretty clueless as to how to go about it: this makes him much easier to relate to. There is so much going on in both Alexander and Lauren's life that it's a miracle either of them get any work done! The book ends on a real cliffhanger which means you'll have to wait for book three to find out what finally happens to them both. As a big softie I'm crossing my fingers for a happy ending.
This series has me hooked. I've been waiting for the second book with bated breath! And I certainly wasn't disappointed. This love affair is a real roller coaster of emotions, mine, Lauren's and Alexander's! I knew an 'Alexander' when I was at college and the hot and cold sides of him are something I recognise well. The coming together and moving apart is very much a feature of the book and helps to create tension. The tension is further increased by the behaviour of Emma, Alexander's sister. That byline had me on the edge of my seat!
I like the way Pippa has developed the characters of Lauren and Alexander - particularly Alexander. He has become much deeper and generally more human in this second book. He is British upper class and so will have the "stiff upper lip" but Lauren's warmth is reaching him and affecting him in a very positive way. He is starting to feel the love!
The settings in Oxford and Alexander's home are lovely and divide the book into separate scenes in a very realistic way. All in all, I loved it and can highly recommend this series. A real cliff hanger ending leaves me desperate for the third book!
In Lauren's first year of College in England at Oxford, she met and fell for Alexander Hunt - a wealthy Englishman and here she was a commoner and an American for starters. She was everything that he should not have fallen for. The relationship though doomed from the start with interference from his family and others, Lauren and Alexander tried to persevere but with the world at their fingertips and pressures - the pair ended up breaking apart. Lauren went home for the break, and now she is back at Oxford and settling back into England life and preparing a year without Alexander Hunt in her life. During her first week, Lauren gets a knock at her dorm door, and it's Alexander in tears. His father has just been killed, and he has no-one else around who he wants to share his pain with. Being the good friend as she still cares about Alexander, she comforts him and attends the funeral. From there, the pair starts to fall back into their old ways and get closer during this time. Of course, there are others that don't want Lauren getting her grubby American mitts on Alexander and will do anything in their power to pull her away from Alexander once again. Being in a relationship with Alexander is anything but easy and brings a lot of baggage and drama. Can Lauren afford to let her heart fall for Alexander again and let him in? Will this be a second time lucky for Alexander and Lauren or will the pair be stuck in the same destructive relationship cycle? Find out in this New Adult/Adult crossover College Romance by Pippa Croft - The Second Time I Saw You.
Soprattutto, sa come farle cambiare idea.
After finishing 'The First Time We Met', I knew that the 'Oxford Blue' series was going to be a very special one, and this feeling has only intensified throughout reading 'The Second Time I Saw You', as I was drawn back into Lauren and Alexander's turbulent yet stunning relationship. It feels almost like I have an addiction to these characters, and their story, of which I just can't get enough! 'The Second Time I Saw You' picks up after the Christmas break in which Lauren has returned to Oxford determined to not let the memory of Alexander and their devastating break-up stop her from putting everything into her work and new start for the next semester. Only she doesn't expect to see Alexander quite so soon after arriving. Seeing Alexander again made me jump for joy, as I was worried that their road to each other would be a bit bumpier than it was, but I loved that the outside strains on their relationship hadn't changed. I loved that whilst Lauren did everything she could to be there for Alexander in this book, she still held part of herself back from him, even though her feelings for him were constantly growing stronger. I loved the pacing of this book, as the author took a really interesting road in developing them as a couple. Whereas normally we’d see the hero have to win the heroine back, sometimes taking a half to a whole of a book to get there, we instead see Lauren and Alexander take up where they left off, with all the old grievances, fears and insecurities they had in the previous book unchallenged, therefore lingering in the backs of their minds and festering into another devastating crescendo of deceit, uncertainty and jealousy. I loved to hate the return of Alexander’s ex-fiancé Valentina, as she really got me fired up and grinding my teeth, Pippa Croft did an excellent job of making me hate the woman so much, and side with Lauren when it came to her worry over Alexander’s continued correspondence with her. I can’t wait to see how Valentina’s lies and her hold over Alexander will affect the couple’s relationship in the next book and I look forward to seeing whether he will finally see the true, vindictive side of the nasty woman. The introduction of Alexander’s sister Emma. After hearing so much about her in the first book it was wonderful to see the infamous sister for myself. Pippa Croft absolutely nailed the rebellious teenager, and made her a very relatable character for other young girls who are going through similar stresses in their life. It was heartbreaking to see the pain her father had put her through, yet the guilt she felt for retaliating by causing him problems. I loved the bond she formed with Lauren, even though at times I felt so bad for Lauren for the guilt she felt for keeping Emma’s secrets from Alexander. This story is one that will stay with you long after finishing it, the ending of this book had me desperately tapping my kindle for the next non-existent page! What an ending! I’m in a complete state waiting for the next book, as I still feel my heart pounding in my chest when I think about it! Another fantastic addition to the ‘Oxford Blue’ series, with the perfect blend of romance, angst, deception, and the strength of love and family. 5+ stars!
I've had this book for sometime now. I hesitated to read this second installment in The Oxford Blues story because I was a little afraid to see what was going to happen between Lauren and Alexander. I shouldn't have. These are my initial thoughts after I'd just finished reading the book at 1:30 AM. "Holy Mother of God! Why'd I wait so long to read this book? This book is amazing! I didn't think Pippa could out do herself, but she did! Full review to come soon! I must ruminate on the awesomeness that is Alexander and Lauren."
Now that I've had a couple of days to think about this book, I feel like I finally talk about it and do it a modicum of justice. The First Time We Met, the first book in this series, ended on sort of a cliffhanger. I wasn't sure how Lauren and Alexander were going to find their ways back to each other, but they did and it was really believable. Lauren realized this time all the warnings she'd been given about Alexander were true, so she was there for him in his time of need but trying not to engage her heart. Alexander was different but that was due to the effect of the tragedy in his life and the added/changed responsibilities he had. I thought he was a lot more open in this book, even though he still remained quite enigmatic.
I liked seeing Lauren trying to help Alexander and support him. I completely understood when she said Alexander was like an addiction she just couldn't quit. It took a while after I finished reading the first book and this one to stop thinking about the both of them and what was going to happen in the third and final book. I also love how Pippa kept the story flowing. I liked the addition of Emma to the story even though I did think of her as a little brat sometimes. She wasn't willing to listen to reason or think outside of the things she wanted. I loved seeing Emma and Alexander together. Their sibling relationship was close even though they differed in opinion on a number of things.
This book was so good and exciting I couldn't put it down. There were a number of events I easily predicted and some I couldn't have seen coming at all. There were a couple of doozies that I didn't think Lauren and Alexander would be able to overcome. I wasn't very happy to see Rupert and the dastardly Valentina up to their old tricks. I know what Valentina's game is but I'm still lost as to why Rupert is so cruel to Lauren and what he really wants from Alexander. I was also a little surprised by the turn in sexy times between Lauren and Alexander. All that aside, I think my absolute favorite part of the book was near the end. It was something that reminded me Alexander did a la Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, that totally made me swoon.
The Second Time I Saw Your Face ends on a major cliffhanger. There will be no prolonged wait to read the final installment to find out what happens next. I have loved this series so far and can not wait to see what Pippa does next to resolve the problems hanging over both Lauren and Alexander's heads.
I was given an ecopy of this book by JB at brookcottagebooks.blogspot.com in exchange for an honest review which I'm more than happy to give. This is the second book in the Oxford Blue Series and I was a little concerned that I hadn't read book 1 first but JB assured me that The Second Time I Saw You could just as easily be read as a stand alone book and I would have to agree. I didn't spend too much time thinking I wonder what happened in book 1?....Until I'd finished it and now I want to read it to understand the characters a little better.
Lauren is determined to stay away from Alexander and start a new term with a clean slate. However this proves impossible - Alexander turns up with a tale of woe and before you know it Lauren is sucked straight back into a relationship.
Their relationship however, is pure chemistry when they come together it's like burning magnesium mixed with water - you can feel the heat and the reaction before it happens. It's a classic case of cannot live together, cannot live apart. Add family & friends with secrets and problems to the mix and poor Lauren is being pulled in every direction.
Pippa has developed characters that evoked quite strong reactions - it's not often I'm reduced to shouting at a book - 'for god's sake' was uttered on more than one occasion as I willed each of them to get a grip. I can't say I loved any of the characters really yet their characteristics I felt were perfect and suited the storyline. Valentina (Alexander's ex-girlfriend) and Prof Rafe were suitably awful, evil and slimy respectively whilst Alexander's 17 year old sister comes across as gullible and vulnerable yet at the same time manipulative and controlling putting poor Lauren in a very difficult position.
I read and finished this book in just three sittings and despite my lack of love for the characters I did enjoy the book and I'm now left wanting to know more. I liked the storyline and sub-stories very much. I feel like I've only eaten half a sandwich though having skipped the bread and gone straight for the filling. I want to see if my opinion alters or is still the same once I can see the progress and changes in both Lauren and Alex so I'm going to read book one then two again before I move on to book three.
I do recommend this book and agree with JB it could be read as a stand alone book but would say if like me you like everything to be all neat and tidy then read book 1 first. It will be interesting to see if my thoughts stay the same. All in all this was a captivating read of friendships and relationships, with more ups and downs than a roller coaster
Tumultuous...not to be missed!, July 3, 2014 Edit Review Delete Review This review is from: The Second Time I Saw You: The Oxford Blue Series #2 (Kindle Edition) Tumultuous...not to be missed!
This by far is one of the most memorable book for me, so hot, sexy and steamy it makes up for the drama and tumultuous affair that it is. When I got done, I felt like I ran a marathon, that uncanny feeling that something dreadful is going to happen at any minute keeps you on your toes. It is packed with many characters that played major parts to make the story whole. Even the most hated villain in the form of odious Rupert, cousin to Alexander, and the cunning, evil of a witch, Valentina, who was once engaged to Alexander. Determined to win Alexander back, she will stop at nothing short of draping herself all over him, no qualms in touching his tush and kissing him smack on the lips even in the presence of Lauren. Though you'd love to hate her, this story probably wouldn't have been as interesting and challenging without her.
Alexander and Lauren are irresistible as the lovers whom you know in your heart will make you truly believe that love makes anything possible! Circumstances hinder their relationship at every turn, but still they manage to beat the odds, and find a way to be together...or did they? What are the chances that Lauren have had enough and decide to throw in the towel and and just call it quits. You have got to read this, you'll experience so many emotions and such intense feelings... joy and sadness, love, hate and incredible grief, you'll be angered and frustrated that when you're finished you'll feel like you've been robbed out of breath, there's that ache that feels like your heart have been ripped wide open but still left you wanting more. I truly can not wait for the next and final book, it is written so well I highly recommend it.
I became so involved in the story that I read this book in one sitting and actually sobbed my heart out at the end. I found Lauren to be a character that I could empathise with and Alexander, for all his faults, was charismatic. I really cared about what happened to them. Pippa Croft has a crisp writing style that I appreciated. The background and settings were well described without being wordy and spoiling the flow of the story. As I live near Oxford, the city is very familiar to me and I could picture the streets and buildings. The characters were complex and well rounded with authentic emotions. Emma's teenage angst and feelings of first love were beautifully portrayed. The crushing blow and the smothering sense of responsibility that come with sudden bereavement were put across in a very poignant manner. I can, and will, recommend this book to readers who appreciate a well written novel with a believable and interesting storyline. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series ...I need to know what happens next to Lauren and Alexander! I also need to read book 1!
After spending the Christmas holidays at home Lauren returns to Oxford to continue her studies. Vowing never more to have anything to do with Alexander. But that soon flies out the window when he turns up at her door. There's been a tragedy affecting his family and he wants to have Lauren by his side.
Once again their relationship is not without it's problems. The ex Valentina is still in the picture causing trouble.
This is a much better read than the first book, the characters are far more developed and interesting. Alexander was far more appealing than before, as the author showed the reader more of his character. Lauren was a delight as she was in book 1. The rest of the characters were not quite so plastic either. Once again the sex scenes are very hot and well written. An enjoyable read. Part three of this series is to be published later this year. Another addictive read from Pippa Croft. Book #2 in the Oxford Blue series is just as fast-paced and sexy as the first. It was great to follow the fresh ups and downs of the passionate relationship between Alex and Lauren and what a cliffhanger ending! The story made me smile, frown, feel sad and have to take a cold shower! Plus Croft's skilful character-building meant that I've come to care about what happens to fiery couple. A very enjoyable read.
This book is the second in a trilogy. When we last left Lauren she had sworn off Alexander. It doesn't take long for the two to reunite. Shortly after the reconciliation, a major tragedy befalls Alexander, leaving Lauren to help pick up the pieces. The second book has different trajectory from the first but I really enjoyed it. It does end on a big cliffhanger and I can't wait for the third installment!
Alexander Hunt is my new book boyfriend! I love how arrogant he can be, he is definitely my type!!
Lauren...I really like her, sometimes I don't agree with her choices and so etimes she can be too dramatic or too nice, but overal I really enjoy reading her story!!
"It’s dark. The kind of darkness you can scoop up in your hands or pull over your skin like a velvet cloth."
Lauren has left the States for her second term at Oxford after six weeks of holiday. This story begins with Lauren succumbing to sleep upon the flight to Oxford. "Outside, the chapel clock chimes the first stroke of midnight, and after it, the other bells of Oxford join in, near and far, out of synch with each other. The chilly night air kisses my skin and the room smells of books and instant coffee and dusty radiators. I can’t move but I’m not dreaming, I just choose not to. I choose to lie here, naked on top of the duvet on my single bed, knowing Alexander is somewhere in the room." “The mattress dips, the bed creaks, and his weight is next to me, over me, on me. His mouth comes down on mine in the darkness. I could stop him, any time I wanted to; I could end this thing between us but I choose not to.”
When she is suddenly awoken on her flight shortly before landing at Heathrow Airport. She is unaware of the tragedy fallen upon Alexander and his family.
"I sure hope I haven’t been acting out my fantasy as I dozed in the flat bed because that would take a lot of explaining. As for my dreams, I already consigned those to where they belong: to the boxes marked ‘Big Mistake’ and ‘Don’t Go There’ and ‘How the Hell Did I Ever Let That Happen?’ And yet … And yet nothing, Lauren."
Alexander and Lauren did not depart on good terms before the holiday.
“I did, however, fall for the most unsuitable man in Oxford, but that’s something they’re never going to know about. The six weeks I’ve been away from Alexander Hunt have been the Christmas gift I didn’t ask for – but needed so much more than clothes or candy.”
“Has it really been two months since we floated back downstream, him lost in some dark and distant place again, me wrapped in his coat, thinking that was the only way I’d ever get inside his skin?
“I’ve learned not to waste my time on battles that can’t be won.”
Lauren is adamant on hardening her heart when it comes to Alexander and placing him behind her. Of course, her neatly premeditated alternative scheme never comes to fruit. Upon her return to her living quarters at the Lodge. When she reaches her room an unfamiliar silhouette, the haughty man she had come to love, is only a fragment of whom he used to be. Alexander is waiting for her in the doorway appearing ill defined and sorrowful. She comes to learn a horrendous tragedy as fallen upon the Hunt family. Alexander seeks Lauren for comfort, support, and assistance as well to emotionally sustain him. Lauren and Alexander's relationship matures; by the same token, there own individual life experiences throughout the story.
“It troubles me, too, that I’ve become embroiled in Alexander’s life again against all my better judgement and that all our old issues are still there, lying like rocks beneath the surface.” “Somewhere in between?” “It is the calm after the storm,”
No matter the ill attempts of certain people to separate Lauren and Alexander, the conflicts that may arise, the Universe always leads them back together. They both are each other’s weakness and strength and have finally found each other. The author’s writing is avant-garde. This narrative contains an increasing extensiveness and develops into several sequences of events that will challenge their volatile relationship. Pippa Croft appears to prepare us for what is to yet to come.
“I get back into bed and lie down. I’m going to carry you off somewhere and lock the door on the rest of the world.” “How do you think this letter got into your bag? I reach for the rocker switch on the lamp and the room is plunged into darkness. Total blackness at first, but gradually my eyes adjust. I hold my hand in front of my face, turning my fingers this way and that. I think I can see the outline of my hand, or maybe my brain is filling in what my eyes can’t see.” “The darkness absolute now because I have my eyes closed.” “I’m going to make good on all the things I’ve lain awake promising myself I’d do.” “The bed dips as the fantasy Alexander climbs astride me.”
“It’s half a minute before I open my eyes to find the room still dark, and the same workaday noises intrude again. There’s no Alexander standing by the bed, of course. It was pure fantasy, on his part and mine.”
“Almost immediately, it starts again and my eyelids flutter open. It is my phone, not a dream or a fantasy but real. It’s right next to me on the nightstand, throbbing angrily, accusing me of ignoring it.” ‘Ms Cusack? Ms Lauren Cusack?’ An English voice, crisp, female, unfamiliar, speaks. It’s barely eight a.m. Who would call at this hour on a Sunday? How does this woman know who I am? I answer slowly, reluctant to own up to my name. ‘Yes, that’s me.’ ‘I believe you know Captain Alexander Hunt, of Falconbury House, Oxfordshire?’ ‘Yes, I know Alexander, but who is this?’
I found this extremely ironic. In the beginning of the narrative Lauren has a dream on her journey back to Oxford, which we later discover tragedy has fallen upon Alexander and his family. In closing, Lauren discovers a letter in her case from Alexander. She once again falls into a deep slumber and dreams of Alexander and is awoken by the buzzing of her phone. Upon answering the call she soon discovers tragedy has struck once again. Lauren by means of her dreams is experiencing at the same time when something ill-fated involving Alexander is occurring.
I have to say it once again excellent writing Pippa Croft. A definite 5 stars... Brilliantly written. Great-character development. A marvelous passion filled, tragic, enthralling and breath-taking read. ARC provided by Netgalley.
The Second Time I Saw You is the second book in The Oxford Blue Series
