Foster House #2

Whiskey Flirt

Rate this book
I returned to Huckleberry Springs to start over with my name on a bakery and my past sealed up tighter than a mason jar. I plan to run my business, keep my history to myself, and ignore handsome flirts like local distillery owner and rancher, Cruz Foster.

Cruz might make me forget how to frost a cookie, but I’ve been taken in by guys like him before. When he turns up the charm, I punch his efforts down like a first proof of sourdough.

He backs off but continues being sweet. My car dies, and he’s there. I need a ride, and he’s there. I want to tell him that I miss the whiskey flirt with the lopsided smile, and he’s there with a sizzling kiss.

The real Cruz is even better than the one he shows everyone else. I fall harder for the guy who loves his family, works hard, and shares his troubled childhood with me. A man who fixes himself is my weakness

But secrets like mine don’t stay buried in small towns. If I don’t want Cruz sinking to the bottom with me faster than blueberries in cake batter, I need to break my heart and go back to minding my own business.

This felt like a full circle book 💕

I remember Cruz from way back at the beginning of Bourbon Canyon.
And I’m so glad he ( and hopefully his brother) got a happy ending.
I just wanted to give him a hug.
His backstory. Ugh.

Elodie: the towns pretty little baker
I enjoyed the backstory mystery that revolves around her.
We spent a lot of time at the bakery.
And so happy to see Cruz bring her out of her shell/funk
I mean she made him really work for it and play the long game tho.

This was such a great addition to this series! I absolutely adore Elodie & Cruz!! Both harboring their own past struggles and pain. Watching these two fall in love despite it all made my heart so happy. I wanted to hug them both!!

Cruz is such a top tier MMC. Always listening, paying attention, and knowing what Elodie needed. Despite his own inner issues, he is always showing up!! Elodie was such a lovable FMC, she was strong, trying to hide her vulnerability, and staying guarded. Quietly trying to overcome her problems & handle them all own her own. Watching Cruz step in for her & show her what she deserved was amazing.

This book was full of angst, tension, and some delicious spice! I laughed with these characters and felt so many of their emotions! This was definitely a swoony & fun ride! Such an amazing story of not letting your past define you & finding what you deserve in the end. I can’t wait to see what else this series has in store!!

Another fantastic addition to the Foster House series. I adored Cruz and Elodie so dang much. I wanted to give them both hugs so much and was so happy they found each other. Both of their back stories were heartbreaking, but watching them fall in love despite their hangups made me swoon.

Cruz is an absolute consent king and I loved watching him traverse the black cat that was Elodie. He listened to her every request, even when she wasn't sure that was actually what she wanted. It was angsty and entertaining at times.

The spice was perfect. A little less than the first two books of the series because this was a muchhh slower burn.

The audio was fantastic. I loved Time Paige and Kelsey Navarro in this DUET narration, they did such a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. Thank you so much to Ear Candy Promotions for the advanced copy!

First book by this author for me and of course I jumped in right in the middle of a series (as usual). And honestly… who is this Cruz?! Because I absolutely loved him. Huge thanks to the Author and to The Author Agency for the eARC, which introduced me not only to a new author but also to a whole new world of distilleries, bakeries, and small-town charm.

One of the strongest parts of this book is definitely the banter between the main characters. Elodie is confident, sharp, and full of attitude, which makes her really fun to follow, while Cruz leans perfectly into that charming-but-slightly-broody love interest energy. Their back-and-forth is playful, flirty, and engaging right from the start. Add a cosy small-town setting into the mix and you get the perfect backdrop for a romance built on tension, proximity, and a lot of teasing.

The story follows Elodie, a baker who’s quietly running from parts of her past and trying to hide her struggles so her family won’t worry about her. As someone with a serious case of “eldest daughter syndrome,” that part hit a little too close to home. Cruz, on the other hand, had a rough childhood of his own but was taken in by Mae and grew into an absolute sweetheart. Elodie sees him as a flirt (I mean… it’s literally in the title), but the truth is he doesn’t really date much at all. In fact, he’s been quietly pining for her for a couple of years.

When Cruz realizes that his usual flirting strategy clearly isn’t working, he switches tactics and becomes more supportive and patient, determined to prove that she can trust him. And honestly? Cruz is basically walking green flags. I loved him so much. Their romance is full of fun, fluffy moments as he slowly earns her trust, mixed with a few spicy “okay, fine, I give up” moments when Elodie finally stops resisting.

Even though I hadn’t read the previous books in the series, I was still able to follow the story without any problems. Walker Rose writes pretty well, and just the way i like it!

Overall, it’s a cute, flirty romance that’s really enjoyable in the moment. It might not leave the deepest mark, but it delivers great chemistry, lots of banter, and a hero absolutely covered in green flags. I’m definitely curious to see what comes next in the Foster House series.

Walker Rose has done it again. She always has a way of writing the most swoon-worthy men that makes you fall in love for them and this little lovely small town romance! Elodie has secrets from her past that seem to make their way to the present....so OF COURSE Cruz will come in a save the day! Can't wait to continue this series!

Another thing I love is that her characters have the most unique and cute names! Elodie and Cruz are just so cute!

How long does it take her to FULLY trust him? Well at the 82% mark apparently. Good gravy this is so not how I wanted this book to go. I was so happy with the first book that I was really excited for Elodie’s story. Now I’m just confused, cuz what even was this?? The writing felt so different and it was really annoying finding scenes not get a full development. Truthfully both characters were not very enjoyable but Elodie really wasn’t how I pictured and I felt really let down with her.

This is the story of MMC Cruz and FMC Elodie. This is a reverse grumpy/sunshine, where Elodie is the one who wants nothing to do with Cruz. Cruz has a reputation as a flirt, but he is into Elodie and works hard to prove himself. Elodie is very guarded and secretive about her past. There is enough banter, secrets, and suspense to keep the story interesting and engaging. Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro did a terrific job with the audiobook narration, they voiced the characters appropriately and brought their emotions to life.

📚🎧ARC/ALC REVIEW🎧📚

I want to talk about narration first because I am throwing so much confetti over it it’s on my eyelids! Well done 👏👏Tim Paige & Kelsey Navarro Foster👏👏. Their voices melded together like a symphonic harmony. It’s like they’re two halves of one “thing”. Make sense? Honestly, I’ve listened to a lot of different castings, and this one is next level epic. They worked ridiculously well together and took the story of Cruz & Elodie to vivid levels! I experienced this story. I didn’t just enjoy it, I lived it. That’s a concept that I’ve always found difficult to express in a way that definitively explains how I feel in the hours I find myself lost in the story, but these two exceptional narrators did that and I could just kiss them on the mouth for it! LOL

This time around I had the opportunity to read-along while I listened which if you couldn’t tell by now, it turned more into a full-on listening experience. I was lost to the story from practically the beginning so it is safe to say that in the which way will give you the mostest (not a word, I know) joy game I love to play, audio #wins 10/10. Obviously, these 2 cents only apply to readers in their audiobook era so, you know, don’t spend them all at once! :)

About this story … I was hooked from the start. That scene at the beginning when Cruz catches Elodie dancing like no one is watching set the tone for me for the entire story and it was fantastic! Honestly, Chapter 1 in its entirety set the vibe and I knew the story would be tension fueled with a push/pull dynamic and I was here for it. The circumstances that Elodie “carries” call for this type of vibe in order for the story to be realistic and the relationship unfold organically and with a relatable tone. I couldn’t be more excited for the world to get ahold of this story right now! I loved how the story had chemistry even when or MCs maybe/kinda didn’t, and when they both had it, the story exploded!

I’m gonna be happy in this “world” over and over again, I feel it. I haven’t had the chance to jump back into Walker Rose’s backlist quite yet but it will happen and something tells me it’s gonna be a ride I will not easily forget!

Audio Review
Duet narration by Kelsey Navarro-Foster & Tim Paige

I really fell for Cruz and Elodie in this small-town romance about putting yourself out there for love. Cruz has been flirting with Elodie for a long while, as he has wanted more than just an acquaintance. But she hasn’t given an inch. In fact, she shuts him down so hard, and it was actually kind of harsh, that he does a 180, and drops all of his easygoing flirty behavior. Yet she wasn’t prepared for the feelings that came up once he took his affections away. She’s been burned in that past, getting involved with a man who didn’t treat her right and manipulated her emotions. To say she’s gun-shy is an understatement. She has secrets from her past she doesn’t want anyone to know about and her potential feelings for Cruz scare her.

Cruz’s patience with her as they begin to get to know each other and navigate the new feelings had me swooning. He gave her the time she needed so she could feel safe. loved how honest Elodie was with her feelings, wanting more from him. And when Elodie’s walls started to come down and she shared her past with him, his protective streak that came out is what we all want in our lives. These two are perfect together.

The duet style narration by Kelsey Navarro-Foster & Tim Paige brought this story to life.
Navarro-Foster has a voice that really works for Elodie’s character, bringing her inner strength and yet with a dash of vulnerability. Paige’s portrayal of Cruz is perfect in its playful flirtatiousness while adding an emotional depth that shows Cruz’s vulnerable side.

This is the first book I’ve read by Walker Rose and I will definitely be reading more.

Just the word flirt was enough to make me sign up for this ARC.

The strongest part of the book is the banter between the main characters. Elodie brings attitude and confidence that make her fun to follow while Cruz leans into the classic charming but broody love interest energy. Their back and forth is playful and engaging at the start and the small-town setting adds a cosy backdrop that works well for a romance built on tension and proximity.

Where the story loses a bit of steam is once the emotional tension starts giving way to predictable romance beats. The conflict feels somewhat repetitive and the characters occasionally rely on familiar tropes instead of deeper development. What begins as sharp chemistry slowly softens into something a little more routine which makes the middle portion drag slightly.

That said it’s still a quick, entertaining read with a likable cast and a light atmosphere. If you enjoy banter heavy romances with a touch of small-town charm and low stakes drama, it definitely has its moments. I also didn't read the book before but was able to follow through this book.

Overall: a cute, flirty romance that’s enjoyable in the moment even if it doesn’t leave a lasting impression.

(Thank you to The Author Agency and the author for the eARC in exchange for a review. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own)

Walker Rose writes my favourite cowboy romances and Whiskey Flirt is definitely no exception. Although this one has a smaller focus on the actual ranch work, this couple may have the best chemistry yet. Elodie is a baker running from her past and she tries to hide things so her family doesn’t worry about her, and as someone with “eldest daughter syndrome” this hit pretty hard. Cruz has his own struggles with his tough childhood but got taken in by Mae and is now a literally sweetheart. She sees in as a flirt (duh it’s the name of the book), but truly he doesn’t actually go out with many people, and has been pining after her for a couple of years now. When he sees that the flirting clearly isn’t working he switches to a more supportive approach, as he’s determined to prove to her that he is trustworthy. Honestly Cruz is covered in green flags and I loved him so much. Their romance was so fun, lots of fluff as he tries to earn her trust, but also some fun spicy “fvck it” moments when she can’t hold herself back anymore. Yes there’s a minor third act breakup bit, but honestly it set up for literally the most adorable but also very emotional act of grovelling ever so I’m not even mad about it. The characters went through lots of development, Elodie especially, and the ending was so beautiful. I can’t wait to see what’s next in the Foster House series! I give this a 4.5/5

If you love small-town romance with plenty of chemistry and charm, Whiskey Flirt is such a fun read. 🍂🥃

This story pulled me in right away with its flirty banter, strong chemistry, and characters that were easy to root for. Walker Rose does a great job balancing the romance with emotional moments that make the relationship feel real and worth investing in.

I especially loved watching the connection between the main characters grow. The tension, the flirting, and those moments where you can just feel the sparks between them made it really hard to put this book down. Their journey wasn’t always smooth, but that just made their story even more satisfying.

The small-town vibes and cozy atmosphere added so much to the story and made it the perfect escape read. If you’re looking for a romance that’s sweet, a little steamy, and full of heart, this one is definitely worth picking up. 📚✨

Overall, this was a fun and addictive romance that kept me turning the pages, and I’m excited to read more from Walker Rose! 💕

Thank you @earcandy promotions for the alcohol of this book.

Elodie and Cruz completely stole my heart. This story has all the cozy small-town charm I love. Elodie is back in town trying to start over with her bakery while keeping her past buried, and you can feel how badly she wants a quiet life where no one asks too many questions. She’s strong but carrying so much, and it made it really easy to root for her from the start.

Then there’s Cruz Foster, and wow… I’m a little obsessed. He starts off as the charming flirt with a ranch and a distillery, but the more you see of him the more layers there are. He’s patient, kind, and the way he shows up for Elodie without pushing her too hard just melted my heart. Their chemistry is fantastic, full of playful banter, tension, and that slow realization that what they have might be something real. I also loved all the baking and whiskey details throughout the story, it made the world feel so vivid.

This one had such cozy small-town vibes and I really enjoyed it. I loved the whole bakery-meets-distillery setting, and Cruz Foster completely won me over. He’s charming, hardworking, and the way he keeps showing up for her in the little moments made the romance feel really genuine.

I also liked that the story had more depth than just the flirtation. Both characters carry some baggage, and watching them slowly open up to each other made the relationship feel real and emotional.

If you love small-town romance, protective heroes, and a little sweetness mixed with heart, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Walker Rose delivers a beautiful story with Whiskey Flirt! Cruz and Elodie had me invested in their story very quickly and it was one I enjoyed from start to finish.

Sweet Cruz definitely captured my heart. He was kind, patient and so supportive. It definitely felt like a full circle moment because what do you mean the young guy we first met in Bourbon Lullaby is now this swoony hero. Elodie also captured my heart. While her past wouldn’t let her get away, she was definitely trying to make lemonade out of these lemons. She was so strong but there was something beautiful about seeing her being vulnerable and opening up to Cruz.

Together, they built the beautiful connection that was accompanied by hot chemistry.

And as for the audio:
Kelsey Navarro Foster and Time Paige brought Elodie and Cruz to life in a superb manner. You could feel all the emotions and tension in their voices. Listening to the audiobook while reading elevated my experience and made it an enjoyable read that I couldn’t stop listening to.

As always, when it comes to Walker Rose’s books, I recomment this one!

I would like to thank Walker Rose for the opportunity to read, listen to and review Whiskey Flirt.

This book was all about how a character's past doesn’t define them. I truly adored Cruz and Elodie, both had past trauma that they were trying so hard to overcome. They were so deserving of each other and their HEA was a slow burn but a welcome one 🩷

Cruz Foster 😍 I am so obsessed with him. He’s naturally flirty but he isn’t a player. He cares so much about what people think of him. Learning about his past broke my heart, I just wanted to hug him and never let go.

He is a sweetheart, and has a massive crush on Elodie. So much so that he hasn’t been with anyone else in the hopes that Elodie will just look at him as more than the whiskey distillery guy.

Cruz listened to every request Elodie made, even when she wasn’t sure what she wanted. I love how he backed off and became her friend, despite wanting her SO BADLY. He would rather have any part of her rather than nothing at all.

Elodie is such a hard worker, trying to right the wrongs of her past. She gives off major black cat vibes because she’s struggling to tell anyone the truth of her past and the fact that she’s being blackmailed.

Together, Cruz and Elodie are amazing. I loved their story.

There is no OW drama, no cheating, but a small third-act breakup. It’s resolved quite quickly and doesn’t give too much reader anxiety.

Thank you to the author agency and Walker for the ARC.

Whiskey Flirt by Walker Rose is a sweet and flirty small-town romance set in Huckleberry Springs. When the heroine returns home hoping for a fresh start and to focus on her bakery, the last thing she expects is Cruz the town’s charming flirt slowly breaking down her walls.

Cruz proves there’s more to him than his reputation, always showing up when she needs him most and making it impossible to ignore their chemistry. This is the second book in the series, and I really enjoyed this series. I also loved the mystery element woven through the story, which kept me intrigued the whole time.

ARC/ALC review:

4.5⭐️: This was such a cute story. Loved Cruz and how he was a reformed bad boy that had a tough childhood. He was so swoonworthy 😍. The way he took care of Elodie to earn her trust was everything. The chemistry between Cruz and Elodie was so good 🥵🔥. I really hated that Elodie was so closed off regarding her past. She had good reason but it was definitely at the detriment of her mental health. The constant keeping of secrets felt a bit repetitive towards the end and I just wanted Elodie to get out of her own way. Cruz saving the day was 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻. The audio was fantastic! Kelsey Navarro Foster and Tim Paige did a wonderful job bringing Cruz and Elodie to life. An immersion read was perfect. Really loving this series!

Chaos. Absolute emotional chaos. That’s the only way to describe what happened to me while reading Whiskey Flirt by Walker Rose. One minute I was settling in for a cozy small-town romance, and the next I was fully invested in two beautifully complicated people trying to outrun their pasts while accidentally falling headfirst into each other.

Published by Walker Rose, thank you to the author for the gifted ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Set in the charming, messy, and slightly whiskey-scented town of Huckleberry Springs, this story centers on Elodie Walker and Cruz Foster, two people carrying more baggage than they’d ever willingly admit. Elodie returns home determined to rebuild her life with flour on her hands and a bakery to run. She wants quiet. Stability. Control. What she absolutely does not want is the town’s charming distillery owner flirting his way into her carefully guarded life.

Unfortunately for her, Cruz Foster has been quietly gone for her for a long time.

At first glance, Cruz seems like the classic small-town flirt—the kind of guy with an easy smile and a reputation that makes women roll their eyes and secretly swoon. But the deeper you get into the story, the more you realize he’s so much more than that. Cruz is patient in a way that makes your chest ache. When Elodie shuts him down hard, he doesn’t push. He steps back. He respects her boundaries. And somehow he still manages to show up when she needs someone most.

Car trouble? Cruz is there.
A quiet moment of encouragement? Cruz is there.
A reminder that she doesn’t have to carry everything alone? Yep… Cruz again.

And honestly? Watching him slowly earn Elodie’s trust was one of the most satisfying emotional journeys I’ve read in a while.

Elodie, meanwhile, broke my heart in the most relatable way. She’s strong, determined, and fiercely independent, but she’s also terrified that the mistakes from her past will destroy everything she’s trying to build. The way she keeps everyone at arm’s length—even when they love her—felt painfully real. You can see exactly why she resists Cruz, even when the chemistry between them is impossible to ignore.

Their relationship builds through small, meaningful moments. Teasing banter. Lingering looks. Shared vulnerabilities. A kiss that shifts everything. The tension simmers for so long that when they finally give in to it, it feels earned in the best possible way.

One line that perfectly captured Cruz’s character and the heart of this story was:

“I might be a flirt, Elodie, but I only ever say what I mean.”

And honestly? That line lives rent-free in my brain now.

What I loved most about this book is that it’s not just about romance. It’s about redemption. It’s about learning that your past doesn’t have to define your future. Both Cruz and Elodie are people who have worked hard to become better versions of themselves, and watching them slowly realize they deserve love was incredibly satisfying.

The setting of Huckleberry Springs also deserves its own mention because it feels so vivid and alive. Between the bakery filled with the smell of sugar and cinnamon, the whiskey distillery, and the close-knit small-town community, the whole story feels cozy even when the emotions run high. Add in the found-family vibes from the Foster House crew, and it becomes the kind of place readers will want to return to again and again.

If you love small-town romance with real emotional depth, this book will absolutely work for you. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy:

• a protective but emotionally intelligent hero
• a guarded heroine with a complicated past
• friends-to-lovers energy with delicious slow burn tension
• small-town charm and found-family vibes
• a baker x distiller pairing that somehow works ridiculously well
• a hero who falls first and never gives up

And Cruz Foster? Let’s just say he officially joins the list of book boyfriends who set the bar impossibly high.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

By the time I finished the final chapter, I had that satisfied, slightly emotional feeling that only comes from a romance that truly earns its happily-ever-after. Cruz and Elodie’s story is tender, swoony, a little angsty, and incredibly heartfelt.

Now I have to ask… do you love a hero who falls first and patiently waits for the heroine to catch up, or do you prefer romances where both characters crash into love at full speed? 🥃📚

"Now you’ve found something worth risking again. I guess the question you have to ask yourself is . . . are the odds worth it?"
Whiskey Flirt feels a lot like a redemption story. One where you’re rooting for both characters because they truly deserve all the good in the land.
I know I jumped on the Walker Rose train late, but I am LOVING this series.

"Her privacy is intriguing. My business was splashed all over the neighborhood as a kid. But Elodie’s is locked. She’s got her shit together, and damn, that’s a turn-on."
Cruz has been pining for Elodie for what seems like ages. He tries to talk to her, even about baking, just so she gives him the time of day. She doesn’t. But that doesn’t stop him from trying because there’s something about her…
Even if there are issues in his past that make him think she’ll never give him a chance.

"He can help by not being so nice. It’d assist me a lot if he weren’t the hottest guy I’ve ever met. I’d find it so useful if I didn’t get so acutely aware when he’s around."
It’s not that Elodie doesn’t see him—trust me, she so does. But she’s been burned before, and Cruz comes off as a huge flirt. Who’s to say he won’t be like someone else she trusted in the past?
Better to stay away—and safe—than to risk it all again.

"Whatever Elodie’s baggage is, it’s heavy. It’s a good thing I’m a strong guy."
A couple of things stood out for me in this one. One, they're both broken. Their respective pasts are seeping into their presents and making them guarded. Making them think they’re not worthy of happiness. That they’re less than.
And two, there might be a time when you won’t like Elodie. Give her a chance anyway.

"Now, Elodie, you might need to elaborate. Because you fascinate me, but the closer I try to get, the farther away you push me."
It takes Elodie saying something hurtful for him to finally back off. Wait, finally? Not really, because she then realizes the man might be the real deal. That maybe he’s not a liar or trying to gaslight her. Maybe he means everything he says.
And maybe what she felt when he was close is not something she should be denying either.

"I’m a patient man."
"What if I’m not worth it?"
"You are."

You’ll get to meet them both. You’ll get to see Cruz’s heartbreaking past (I wanted to reach out and hug him!) and how his life changed when he was adopted by the Fosters. You’ll get to see who Elodie is, what she’s fighting, and just how exhausted she is of doing it alone because she thinks no one is there for her.
And they become so real—real people with real issues—that you’ll fall for them both.

"Your brains, your body, and your booze. I’m not a picky hussy when it comes to you."
"You’re my hussy."
"Just for you."

It takes them a while. One step forward, two steps back and all that, but Cruz really is a patient man. He becomes a friend, someone she can rely on, who offers reassurance and support, and who respects her boundaries even when he’s dying to cross them.
And when she finally lets him… Damn, sparks fly.

"You flirt, but it’s your way of making everyone feel good. You get a special look when you’re talking to me. It’s all mine."
It’ll always be hers.

Elodie’s past comes back to haunt her big time, and there’s a sort of third-act breakup that I think needed to be there. Sometimes we only see things when they smack you right in the face, right? And it only proves how much of a green flag Cruz is and how gone he is for his girl.

I absolutely loved the family and found family vibes. I loved all the baking—by the way, can we have some of Elodie’s recipes please? I would love to try them.

"This is exactly where I made a decision. That I would be someone who could have it all. Now I do. I have more. And there’s a woman who loves me that I want to spend the rest of my life with."
Cruz and Elodie realized they deserved happiness but, more than anything else, that they would only find it in each other. Because they put each other’s pieces back together in the way only a soulmate can.

Whiskey Flirts is the second book in the Foster House series, and it delivers a cozy, emotional small town romance that is easy to sink into. At the center of the story are Cruz Foster and Elodie, the town’s quiet baker. Cruz has been openly interested in her for quite some time, but Elodie keeps him firmly at arm’s length. She sees him as the town flirt and doesn’t trust that his charm means anything real. In fact, she shuts him down so bluntly in the beginning that it is hard not to feel a little sorry for him.

What makes the romance work so well is how Cruz adjusts instead of pushing harder. When he realizes that his playful flirting is not getting through to her, he backs off and changes his approach. He gives her space and focuses on simply being there when she needs him. Whether it is offering help with her car or just showing up with steady support, Cruz proves that he is far more than the easygoing charmer everyone assumes he is. His patience and attentiveness make him an incredibly easy hero to root for AND fall for.

Elodie is carrying a lot more than she lets on. She returned to town hoping to quietly rebuild her life and grow her bakery, but parts of her past still follow her. She is guarded for good reason and has spent a long time trying to handle everything on her own without worrying the people around her. Watching her slowly begin to trust Cruz and allow someone to stand beside her is one of the most satisfying parts of the story. I love how he shows up for her...over and over again.

Their relationship grows out of friendship, teasing, and a lot of sharp banter. Elodie has a quick wit and a stubborn streak that keeps Cruz on his toes, while Cruz brings warmth, charm, and surprising emotional depth. The push and pull between them creates a fun tension that carries through the entire book. When Elodie finally begins to let her walls down, the chemistry between them becomes undeniable, and that's when I really started to sink into them. I just wanted to get past her prickly walls!

The small town setting adds another layer of charm to the story. Between the distillery, the bakery, and the close knit community surrounding the Foster family, the atmosphere feels warm and inviting and so dreamy. The story blends humor, emotional moments, and a bit of spice, creating a romance that is both swoony and heartfelt and an all around easy read/listen. At its core, the book is about learning that your past does not have to define your future and realizing that you deserve something better. And what a great theme that is.

The duet narration by Kelsey Navarro-Foster and Tim Paige is fantastic. Kelsey captures Elodie’s quiet strength while also letting the character’s vulnerability shine through in the moments where her defenses start to slip. Tim is SO DREAMY. He brings Cruz to life with the perfect balance of playful charm and emotional sincerity, showing both his teasing side and the depth of his feelings for Elodie. Together, their performances feel incredibly natural and immersive, making the characters and their relationship feel all the more engaging. They have great vocal chemistry, which really kept me hooked even with a slower starting romance.

Overall, this is a sweet, flirty romance filled with strong character moments, playful banter, and a hero who proves that patience and kindness can go a long way. Even for readers new to the series like me, it was easy to fall into the story and enjoy watching Cruz and Elodie find their way to each other. It is a warm, feel good addition to the Foster House world and definitely has me excited to check out more.

Whiskey Flirt brings us back to Huckleberry Springs for Cruz Foster’s story, the charming distillery owner and rancher who has been quietly pining after the town’s mysterious baker, Elodie Palmer. Elodie has returned to town hoping for a fresh start, determined to focus on her bakery and keep her past buried. And I don’t know why, but at some point I kept calling her Eloise in my head…

Going into this book, I had pretty high expectations because I was so curious to see Cruz and Elodie after meeting them in the previous book. A small glimpse of their dialogue immediately made me curious about this couple, so I came into this story with some anticipation.

Cruz’s care and interest in Elodie were definitely one of the highlights. Their banter starts off slow but gradually develops into something sweet. Cruz’s charm and flirtation—though he tries to restrain himself so as not to scare Elodie—makes their interactions entertaining and sweet. Elodie, on the other hand, doesn’t open up easily and often responds with evasive, short answers, which gives their dynamic a guarded and slow start. But once Elodie realizes that Cruz truly cares about her and genuinely wants to get to know her as a partner, her walls slowly begin to come down.

Watching Cruz earn Elodie’s trust was really sweet, especially because he never pushes her to open up before she’s ready. At the same time, Elodie becomes a safe space for him as well, encouraging him to share parts of his own difficult past. It was nice to see how well they fit together despite their somewhat rough start and the feeling, at first, that they didn’t have much in common.

However, the story didn’t quite live up to all the expectations I had for this couple./b> Both characters have complicated pasts they’re trying to keep hidden, and I expected that aspect to be explored a bit more deeply. Instead, some of the emotional development felt rushed, and the pacing in the middle slowed down while relying on a few romance tropes. While I enjoyed these elements, unfortunately, the way they were handled didn’t fully convince me.

Another thing I noticed was that some of the intimate scenes felt a bit abruptly cut or closed off, without really giving the moment time to settle or fully develop.

I also found myself wishing we had seen more of Cruz’s year-long flirting that’s mentioned in the story. Seeing that build-up on page could have created a stronger slow burn and added more depth to their relationship. Instead, since we’re thrown straight into the dynamic, it sometimes felt like something was missing or slightly rushed.

That said, it’s still a quick and enjoyable read. The characters are likable, the banter is entertaining, and the low-stakes drama keeps the story moving. Even if it didn’t leave as strong an impression on me as some of the previous books in the series, it was still a cute small-town romance that I had a good time with.

Many thanks to #TheAuthorAgency for the earc.

I’m still sitting here with the biggest goofy grin because Elodie and Cruz just completely stole my heart.

First of all… small town romance + bakery owner + whiskey-making rancher??? That combination alone had me hooked. The whole vibe of Huckleberry Springs feels cozy and warm and a little messy in the best way, like a kitchen that always smells like sugar and cinnamon but also has flour on literally every surface.

Elodie coming back to town trying to start over with her bakery and keep her past locked up tight hit me right in the feelings. She’s strong but also carrying so much, and you can feel how badly she wants a quiet life where no one digs too deep. And then along comes Cruz Foster… the walking, talking temptation with a distillery, a ranch, and that lopsided smile that would make anyone forget their own name.

Cruz though. CRUZ. I’m obsessed. The man starts off as the charming flirt but the more you see of him the more layers there are. He’s patient, he’s kind, he shows up when she needs him without pushing too hard. The car trouble scene? Him just being there? My heart basically melted into a puddle. And when he backs off because he thinks that’s what she needs but still quietly supports her?? Ugh. That kind of sweet devotion gets me every time.

Their chemistry is ridiculous in the best way. The banter, the tension, the slow falling… it felt natural and real and when they finally gave in to it I was kicking my feet like a teenager. And the emotional moments? The parts where Cruz shares his past and Elodie lets her guard down? So good. Those scenes hit hard because you really believe in them as people, not just characters.

Also the baking and whiskey details sprinkled through the story were perfection. I swear I could almost smell the cookies and the oak barrels while reading.

And then the secrets… because of course small towns never let secrets stay buried. Watching Elodie struggle with whether to protect Cruz by leaving or trust him with the truth absolutely wrecked me. My heart hurt for her because you could feel how much she loved him.

Honestly this book was cozy, emotional, romantic, and just straight up addictive. Elodie and Cruz are the kind of couple you root for so hard your chest hurts a little.

If you love small town romance, protective but sweet heroes, strong women trying to rebuild their lives, and chemistry that sparks like a match in a whiskey barrel… you need this book immediately. I loved every second and now I’m not ready to leave Huckleberry Springs. 💛🥃🍪📚

Cruz and Elodie are one steamy, whiskey-laced confection!

💖📚 Story: 4 ⭐️s
🎧🎤 Narration: 5 ⭐️s

Book 2 in Walker Rose’s Foster House series is a fine addition. With WF, it was great to be back in Huckleberry Springs and pass some time in a welcoming, small town setting. This is a friends-to-lovers romance where a lovely baker is trying to make good while keeping secrets, and having a hard time resisting the distiller-cowboy who just wants her to let him in.

Cruz intrigued me in the previous book, so I was looking forward to seeing what kind of arc and HEA Walker had in store for him. And it was a definitely a good one! Elodie is a great match for him. She’s taking on too much because of the burden past mistakes that aren’t totally hers, and trying to keep that secret from her family, friends, and community. She’s especially reluctant to burden Cruz because of his own past. This makes for some great tensions to start. Plus they have amazing chemistry. And while they do burn a little slow at the start, once they get there - wow! They are fire 🔥 to the end!

I love an FMC backed into a corner because watching her work her way out has potential for some interesting character growth. Sadly, that leads to my one problem with this story - I wanted to see Elodie find her own solution or at least for her and Cruz to attack the source of her problem together. In the end, he wound up going a bit white knight, and while that definitely looks good on him, it did feel like a slightly lost opportunity for Elodie to contribute to the solution. Still, the support and protectiveness that motivate Cruz are endearing and Elodie was certainly appreciative! And the journey to get there was still entertaining.

The duet narration in the audiobook is excellent! Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro Foster are always fantastic together, but to hear them in duet is extra special. Paige’s performance really delivers on all the promises of Cruz’s character. The strength and protectiveness, the sexiness - just great! When it comes to Elodie, Navarro Foster is pitch perfect. The interiority and vulnerability of the character come across so clearly in her delivery. Such a talent! My whole listening experience was just *chef’s kiss* ( though maybe baker’s kiss is more appropriate here? Perhaps whiskey kiss? 💋😘).

If you love baked goods, distilled passion, an FMC with secrets and an MMC with a mile-wide protective streak - put this one in your ears ASAP!

I’m grateful to Ear Candy Promos for the chance to hear this ALC. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

A Beauty of a Story & Listen🎧Engaging & Emotional!

Whiskey Flirt
Foster House, Book 2
By: Walker Rose
Narrated by: Kelsey Navarro Foster, Tim Paige

I enjoyed this book immensely, a romance novel with complex characters and intriguing storylines that captivates your attention and tugs at your heartstrings the entire time. Elodie left Huckleberry Springs to attend culinary school, and while she was gone, she got involved in things she is not proud of, things she never talks about, but she is back in town now running her own bakery. Cruz Foster did not have the best of lives growing up, and has done things to warrant a bad reputation, but he turned his life around and has redeemed himself to his family, friends, and people in the town. He has a crush on Elodie, but thinks she wants nothing to do with him or the like of him, thinks she deserves better, but that does not stop him from trying. Cruz runs the distillery with his brother and brings different liquors to Elodie to bake with, and I loved the scene when he first arrived with her order, a cute and hilarious scene. Elodie is super closed off, and he senses she has something going on, but he is a patient man, does not push her or give up on her. I thought these two were great together and for each other, but they both had issues and insecurities they needed to get past, and allow themselves to be loved, and see they were worthy of it. Cruz was a gem of a man, and the things he did for her were thoughtful and meaningful. I enjoyed the layers of the story and how they all played out, with the perfect balance of drama, angst, heartfelt emotions, and a slow-burn, but so worth the wait romance. The writing, plot, and world-building are fantastic, as are the character depth, growth, and development. Walker Rose, thank you for this fabulous story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 Kelsey Navarro Foster and Tim Paige deliver a fantastic performance voicing these characters, humanizing them with their personalities and emotions. I loved how they took each role and made it their own, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters to sound. Kelsey Navarro Foster nailed it as Elodie and was a natural in the role, and Tim Paige was just as fabulous in Cruz’s role, both embodying their characters completely. The performance by these talented and entertaining voice artists was captivating and took the story to new heights.

If you love a small-town romance with a swoony cowboy MMC, Whiskey Flirt is exactly what you’re looking for. The Foster House series keeps getting better and better. This is such a great addition.

Cruz Foster is a rancher and distiller who runs the family business with his brothers. He didn’t have the easiest start in life, but thanks to the Bailey family and his brothers, he grew into a genuinely good man. Cruz has a reputation as a flirt—but that’s just his personality and he’s always respectful. The only woman who’s ever truly caught his attention is Elodie, the town’s baker… who refuses to give him the time of day.

Elodie returned to her hometown to open her bakery and has kept her world small ever since. She works constantly and keeps everyone at arm’s length, hiding painful secrets from her past. Trust doesn’t come easily to her, but Cruz slowly proves that he’s a man who backs up his words with actions.

These two were so good together. I absolutely fell for Cruz and the patience he showed while getting to know Elodie. He’s the perfect example of “if he wanted to, he would.” Watching both of them slowly lower their walls made their connection even more satisfying. The tension, longing, and chemistry build beautifully—and when it finally breaks through, it’s hot, emotional and worth the wait.

I also loved all the moments with Cruz’s brothers, their wives, and the extended family. Seeing Elodie slowly welcomed into that circle was incredibly heartwarming. This series does such a wonderful job showing that family can be both the one you’re born into and the one you choose.

A sweet, swoony, and satisfying romance with a beautiful HEA. I’m completely obsessed with this world and can’t wait for more. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ARC Review 📚

ALC Review 🎧

I already loved this book, but the audiobook truly brought Cruz and Elodie to life. Narrated in duet by Tim Paige and Kelsie Navarro Foster, this was such an enjoyable listen.

I’m new to Tim Paige, and he absolutely delivered as Cruz. He captured the flirty, dependable, sweet country boy perfectly. I was hooked right away and loved his performance. I never thought hearing thank-yous and compliments could sound so hot, but I stand corrected—well done, sir!

Kelsie Navarro Foster was a fantastic Elodie. I always enjoy her narration and she was perfect for this role. She captured every nuance of Elodie’s personality—from her anxiety and fear to her tenacity and strength—with so much authenticity.

This audiobook pulled me straight into the heart of Montana country and left me wanting more. A truly enjoyable listen.

The second book in the Huckleberry Spring series, Whiskey Flirt by Walker Rose, is a heartfelt, depth-driven romance that proves how the right person can help you overcome a difficult past. Narrated flawlessly by Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro Foster, this story brings a raw emotional layer to the blossoming relationship between a charming distillery owner and a guarded baker.

The plot follows Cruz Foster, a local rancher and whiskey distiller who has carried a torch for Elodie for years. While the sweet cover might suggest a light, fluffy read, the narrative is much more complex. Both characters are "two sides of the same coin," each working hard to redefine themselves after surviving troubled childhoods and significant baggage.

Cruz’s character is a highlight of the book; despite his reputation as the town flirt, he is remarkably devoted and far from a "player." His loyalty shines through his patience, as he remains focused solely on Elodie even in the face of her repeated rejections. He is a hardworking man who has turned his life around, slowly dismantling her defenses with genuine kindness and a lopsided smile.

Elodie is a strong, independent protagonist who has buried her history "tighter than a mason jar." She is determined to run her bakery and keep her secrets to herself, often pushing Cruz away like a first proof of sourdough. While her stubbornness and refusal to ask for help—even when facing a legitimate threat—can be frustrating, her journey toward vulnerability is deeply relatable.

She eventually discovers that the "real" Cruz, who is willing to share his own scars with her, is a weakness she can’t resist. Their dynamic is defined by delicious tension, sweet banter, and "stay-out-of-the-kitchen" heat. Watching them navigate their push-and-pull relationship makes for a truly satisfying emotional arc.

The story is further enriched by appearances from beloved characters in the Huckleberry Springs "found family," making the setting feel lived-in and warm. Walker Rose has delivered an empowering tale of trust and resilience, showing that you don't have to let your past define your future.

Ooh, this was a gratifying read! It had heart and drama and spicy goodness. I got to fall in love with new characters, visit with ones I already know and get very excited for the ones whose stories are yet to come. All while swooning, giggling, shedding some tears, breathing through some anger, and kicking my feet. So good!

Elodie is a baker and bakery owner.

Cruz is a rancher and distillery owner.

They live in the same town. He likes her and doesn't hide it. She likes him but does hide it. He makes a move. She shuts him down. He stops, immediately. She misses their relationship. They talk. And talk more. Then there is a first date. And then fear gets real loud. Look, theirs is not a smooth journey but it is a satisfying one. And it is worth every up and down, dip and pivot. They are worth it.

Elodie is struggling. Past choices are haunting her and she doesn't know how to escape them. She is afraid of hurting her family, so she carries it alone. Until Cruz. He slowly works his way into her trust & heart and she starts to share all of herself with him. Her learning to trust him and see his heart & real intention was such a beautiful journey.

Cruz broke my heart. He had a terrible start to life and has worked so hard to be more than his raising. He is so respectful of Elodie and her boundaries and it was refreshing to see. He never questioned or pushed or overstepped. He respected and listened and was honest. He is a beautiful man and he deserves the best. It was both amazing and difficult to watch him fight for it. Also, he is a puppy and kitten dad. Be. Still. My. Heart.

I adore a "they really see me, the true me" story and I feel like we get that for both of these characters. They see each other and are absolutely down bad, obsessed for each other and their true self.

I really enjoy Walker's writing and the way she tells her characters' stories. I find it easy to get lost in the world she created but my brain doesn't struggle to keep track of people. And there is always some perspective or idea expressed that clicks with a part of my heart & mind to give me a new perspective.

I received this as an ARC and am beyond grateful. This had zero impact on my review.

⭐️⭐️⭐️️⭐️/ ️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Book 3 in the Foster House series, Walker Rose has once again, provided a book that captivates you, pulls at your heart strings, and leaves you happy and full by the time you reach The End. Whiskey Flirt is filled with tension, yearning, and romance. Walker did an amazing job with this story, which made it hard to put down. I adore friends to lovers romances and this book absolutely delivers.

Elodie is a strong, independent spitfire. She lives her life out loud and is unapologetically herself. She does have secrets though and holds those close to herself. She doesn’t necessarily trust easy members of the opposite sex, but for good reason. She was hurt once and will never allow herself to be hurt again. So when she starts to receive attention from Cruz, she shuts it down. But once that attention is gone, she realizes she misses it. Not in a way that feeds her ego, but that she truly enjoyed having him around. Opening up her heart again was never in her master plan, but Cruz makes it very difficult to not give her heart up.

Cruz has wanted more with Elodie for sometime, but she has made it very clear they will only be friends. Because he is ready for more with someone, he decides to stop giving Elodie attention she doesn’t want. But now Elodie is coming around more often, he can’t help but fall for her. Cruz is so sweet and patient as he and Elodie become closer. He can tell something in her life has been buried away, but never pushes her to share. When she finally does, the protectiveness this man has for her is beyond swoony.

I couldn’t get enough of Cruz and Elodie. Their chemistry is beyond sizzling and every interaction is laced with desire. Their banter is incredible throughout the book and their sweet, quiet moments leave you wanting more. I will never get tired of reading Walker’s stories and look forward to what she has in the works. There is not one part of the book that I disliked and loved getting to return to this world. It is one that I will revisit again and again.

As always, review any author notes before reading.

ARC Review of Whiskey Flirt Book 2 in the Foster House Series by Walker Rose. This book is part of an interconnected series but can definitely be read as a standalone. This is a 5 star read for me. I love love love this book it is so good, it gave me all the feels. This is such a sweet, low angst story with a little drama mixed in. This is Cruz and Elodie's story. I love Cruz he is so sweet, kind and naturally flirty, my heart aches for what he went through in his childhood and the insecurities he has because of it. I love Elodie she is so strong and is such a hard worker, she loves her family but is haunted by things in her past and won’t talk to anyone about it even her family. I love that Cruz doesn’t give up on Elodie even when she pushes him away he is patient and eventually he breaks through her defenses, earns her trust, and works his way into her heart. This is a slow burn, spicy, baker fmc, distiller/rancher mmc, he falls first and hard, small town romance. Elodie is 32 and owns her own bakery in her hometown of Huckleberry Springs, Montana. Cruz is a rancher and part owner of the local distillery Foster House Gold. Cruz has been pining over Elodie for a very long time he tries to ask her out but she pushes him away and tells him to stop flirting with her. Once he is flirting with her and trying to get her to like him she realizes she misses it. He helps her out with she has car trouble and she tells him she misses his flirty side. Elodie has secrets from her past that she doesn’t want anyone to find out. Cruz has things from his past he’s not proud of either and they understand each other better than they thought. I love how patient Cruz is and how he breaks through Elodie’s walls and that she opens up to trusts him. I love them together. It took them awhile to get together and it is a slow burn but I love their HEA. I highly recommend this book. I also listened to the audiobook and it is fantastic it is duet narration which I absolutely love I really enjoyed listening to it.
