Free copy of this book was gifted in exchange for my honest review. So here it goes! Remember the "Gold dust". This book is labeled as children's. And has all the magic of childhood. But personally I would recommend this book more to pre-teen and teens. Due to some scenarios in the book you ger children would not find enjoyable. The scenarios could possibly make for nightmares. But my preteen loved it as well! The magic mystery and wonder keeps you on your toes. I hope you loved this book as much as I did and share with your children.Oh!! And remember to "keep to your area" and "stay together"
Jalina Jons and the Owenroake Treasure Hunters was a brilliant book. It is a great read for ages 7 to 12. The book has a main storyline and several parallel storylines. About halfway through, the author's great curve completely took me aback. I enjoyed the book and think readers in that age group will too. Since it is the first in a series, I expect more adventures.
I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway and I am so thankful! With that I am happily giving a 5 star review! This is such a great book for children. Such a fun and magical book! After reading I can’t wait to gift this to my teacher friend to add to her classroom library for her students to enjoy!! Thank you for this giveaway I am beyond grateful.
This is a fantastic read for school kids. The plot of the book has been handled rally well, it starts by placing everyone into their roles and positions and then expanding to gradually bring in other characters that assist and befriend the lead character of Jalina Jons and her brother. The pace of the book is really good it starts of with introducing the protagonist Jalina and her brother and gradually picks up pace and leaves you on a bit of a high wanting the story to continue but having to wait for part 2 to come out. While reading I kept seeing nods to some very famous classic books, Annie, Peter Pan, Indiana Jones, throughout the book which was a really fun adventure. The main characters are well round personalities that are easy to imagine and see in your minds eye.
What captivated me was finding all the different characters from other story lines and I couldn't wait to keep reading to find the next character and where it fits in to the list of books and story lines I have read before.
This is a brilliant read for good readers as there are few words that those who are not that good yet will struggle with, that being said it is a good read and will aid in the growth of a child's vocabulary. I can't recommend this highly enough for kids aged 9 and above and those who are really good readers that are around 8. It is also a fantastic quick read for adults with loads of adventure, mystery and fun for all.

Review:
👉This book is a captivating middle-grade fantasy that blends emotional depth with high-stakes adventure. From its dramatic opening to its pulse-pounding finale, the novel delivers a story that feels both magical and meaningful. While comparisons to Harry Potter and Fablehaven are easy to make, this book carves out its own space with a unique treasure-hunting twist and a heroine whose journey is as emotional as it is fantastical.
👉The story begins with heartbreak as Jalina “Nina” Jons and her brother Jake are abruptly uprooted from their lives and sent to the ominous Owenroake Children’s Home. This darker beginning adds genuine weight to the narrative, making Nina’s resilience all the more inspiring. What first appears to be a dreary and oppressive place slowly reveals hidden magical dimensions, including the enchanting Fort Fernbottom School of Magic. The gradual unveiling of these secret “Areas” creates a sense of wonder that mirrors Nina’s own awakening to a world she never knew existed.
👉One of the novel’s strongest elements is its imaginative world-building. McDaniel introduces magical treehouses, ancient artifacts, mysterious powers, and a thrilling treasure hunt competition that drives much of the action. The concept of students discovering superhero-like abilities within hidden magical zones feels fresh and exciting. The treasure hunt structure adds urgency and suspense, as each challenge raises the stakes and forces Nina and her team to think creatively and work together under pressure.
👉Nina stands out as a relatable and layered protagonist. She is not instantly confident or fearless; instead, she grows into her strength as circumstances demand it. Her grief, self-doubt, and determination make her feel authentic, allowing young readers to connect with her on a personal level. The friendships she forms are central to the story, emphasizing teamwork, trust, and loyalty. Even the antagonistic forces are well-crafted, creating tension without overwhelming the intended age group.

One of the strongest parts of this book is the main character. Jalina feels real and easy to relate to. She is scared at times, but she does not give up. Her relationship with her younger brother Jake adds warmth to the story and shows the importance of family and trust. As the story moves forward, Jalina slowly learns more about herself and her abilities, which makes her growth feel natural and believable.

This book is a charming, engaging tale for children and for adventure lovers of all ages. It's giving Narnia meets Indiana Jones vibes and I absolutely love that. Jalina and her brother are instantly likable, despite their privileged beginnings. The magic is never heavy handed, rather it is sprinkled throughout to help develop the plot. I read this as an audiobook, and narrator Amanda Woldt does an incredible job with the voices and inflection, and her accents are believable and endearing. I can’t wait for the rest in this series!
This is a good adventure book. The book starts out very sad and intense for Nina and Jake. They have wealthy parents who disappear but why can't they stay at home with the help and not have to leave their pup and go to the awful childrens home? As they book continues it becomes a little scarier and then quite magical. There are more books and adventures in the children's future and they should all be exciting and enjoyable.
