MEAN GIRL MUTINA! A festive event is interrupted by the daughter of darkness herself, Mutina. And she has an unimaginable favor to ask the Uncanny X-Men and woe betide them all if they refuse! It’s murderous mutants and cake and blades and you will look very differently at one of the core X-Men after this bloody issue!
Gail Simone is a comic book writer well-known for her work on Birds of Prey (DC), Wonder Woman (DC), and Deadpool (Marvel), among others, and has also written humorous and critical commentary on comics and the comics industry such as the original "Women in Refrigerators" website and a regular column called "You'll All Be Sorry".
First issue for me and it was impressive how easy it was to get into this one. The writing was great and the characters are varied and well written. Mutina is a little cliche but that isn't a bad thing here. Kurt is fantastic in this one from start to finish.
Maybe even a 4.5. Gail Simone's writing is pretty spot on. My only complaint is that this premise, that of an angry, self-destructive adolescent acting out for attention? Very done to death. My husband and I just finished bingeing a 1980s sitcom that used this kind of character often, and now here we are in 2025 and she's still rearing her ugly head.
As a plot device, I see the appeal. This issue was very explicit about the fact we're unsure what Mutina's deal is. Is she a hurt child looking for a family, or is she just a petty bully who's rotten to the core? This is all about whether she is going to get a redemption arc. But, maybe she doesn't actually deserve one? This issue was ambiguous about whether Mutina has actually killed anyone yet. Wolverine indicates that she definitely isn't afraid to, but we're unsure whether she has actually crossed the line yet.
*shrugs* She's a non-magical version of Illyana Rasputina, though. Just a teleporting blonde mutant girl with blades, emphasizing her dark nature. If you think about her this way, and I already could tell that Ransom is just Sunspot 2.0, then the latest batch of young mutants are feeling very much like 1980s New Mutants Redux.
Heard a lot of smack talk about this run but I've enjoyed both this and the currant X-Men run by Jed MacKay. Glad we are getting a return and close to the Mutina story line that was a stand out from last year.
I liked this one quite a bit. The art was good as usual by Marquez. The action was very engaging. I like Simone’s ability to balance emotional moments between the characters and fun action. Good stuff in this issue!
