AMERICANO
HE CAME LOOKING FOR SUNSHINE. HE FOUND A REVOLUTION.
It’s 1957 and Chuck Ryan is an eighteen-year-old high school dropout looking for a fresh start at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay. But Cuba— volatile and brimming with unrest—is not the postcard paradise he expected.
As Chuck drifts from a base high school and beach parties into the heart of a brewing uprising, he witnesses the quiet brutality of dictatorship and the courage of those willing to resist it. When a single act of violence shatters his illusions, Chuck is forced to choose to look away, or risk everything.
While Fidel Castro’s insurgency is taking root in the mountains, Chuck stumbles into a world of double lives and deep radical students, underground broadcasts, and a regime cracking down with terrifying force. Caught between duty and conscience, privilege and protest, Chuck’s awakening will test his ideals, his courage—and his country’s authority.
Based on true events, Americano is a timely story of political disillusionment, lost innocence, and history in motion. Tense, propulsive, and deeply human, it unfolds as a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of revolution. Before the world knew Fidel, one American teenager witnessed the revolution up close—at a moment when history was poised to ignite—and began to see the world not just as it is, but as it could be.

AMERICANO is a compelling coming-of-age novel that places a young American directly in the middle of a country approaching revolutionary change. John Miglis creates an atmospheric portrait of 1950s Cuba through Chuck Ryan, an eighteen-year-old who arrives at Guantanamo Bay expecting a fresh start but soon finds himself confronted by political unrest, violence, and the harsh realities surrounding him.
What stood out to me was Chuck's gradual transformation as he moves beyond the security of the naval base and begins witnessing the struggles of ordinary Cubans. His encounters with radical students, underground broadcasts, and the brutality of Batista's regime force him to question what he believes and where he stands. The historical setting adds considerable depth to his personal journey.
Overall, AMERICANO is an engaging choice for readers who enjoy historical fiction, coming-of-age stories, political drama, and novels inspired by real events. Its combination of personal discovery, historical tension, and a vivid Cuban setting makes it a thought-provoking story about witnessing history and discovering the courage to confront uncomfortable truths.

The Journey That Will Change Everything
This is the kind of book that’s bound to give you goosebumps. The author has crafted this masterpiece in a way that is as clear as it is raw, making it impossible not to empathize with Chuck on every single page. This story, based on true events, follows an 18-year-old who arrives at a destination he never imagined would change his life so drastically and forever. It has easily become one of my favorite books.
The storytelling is gripping; it takes you on a journey from feeling pity for the protagonist to hope, and then back to harsh reality. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience the Cuban Revolution from the inside, highlighting the struggles of ordinary people who, without choosing it, are caught in the middle of so much pain and slaughter, fighting until the very last second to save their lives.

An interesting,historical novel
“Americano”, by John Miglis, is an absorbing novel inspired by true events. The story revolves around a teenager who witnesses a revolution without wanting. He goes to Guantanamo Bay to embrace a new start but events change everything. While he is there, he finds himself in a country where people struggle to survive and resist every day of the week. In the meantime, he learns about the events that bring about Fidel Castro’s revolution. It’s an interesting historical novel that clarifies a bit more the way Cuba inhabitants live and understand Fidel’s insights.
It’s a well-written and developed novel that touches interesting and heartfelt issues. I liked it and I recommend it.

Americano is a story set in Cuba that really comes to life. Perhaps that is because it is based on true events. While the protagonist, Chuck Ryan, was created by the very talented author, some of the political figures, like Fulgencio Batista and Fidel Castro, were very much real. Chuck is only eighteen years old, and he was not expecting the shocking violence that he would have to witness. This is a coming-of-age story with many raw feelings and tense moments in the narrative. It keeps the reader interested from the first page to the last. The book is suitable for adults and young adults. I was still engrossed with the story long after the book was finished.

What a great book! From the outset, it has an overwhelming intensity that captivates the reader, firstly because it gives a stark account of the war and the background to that period. Secondly, because the protagonist is a teenager and we can observe his growth and the different facets of his personality.
Finally, the fact that the story is inspired by real events makes us see the events in a different light and feel more empathy with the characters.
With a few shocking surprises along the way, this title kept me turning pages wanting to know more about that particular period of history.
It’s an amazing story and I totally recommend it!

For me, a novel must enlighten, entertain, and evoke. Miglis hits all three with “Americano.” He had me at germinal, juddering, and slue — three trips to Merriam-Webster in the third paragraph. Not for definition, but for usage. I was hooked. Fast paced and action filled, I savored the reading and slowed myself down because I didn’t want it to end. And then I began to recognize bits of myself — in a blast from the past and too cool for school way — prior to 1968. How I got there. How it changed me. How it kept me idealistic and why. Highly recommend. I’m on my second savoring read through.
