The Confession by M. A. Hunter was a gripping, well-paced thriller and the storytelling was really enthralling.

This story centers on Abbey, a criminologist whose career of helping the wrongly accused hides a devastating secret from her past. When someone begins blackmailing her and threatening to expose the truth, Abbey is forced into a dangerous game of manipulation and guilt to protect everything she’s built—and everyone she’s lost.

The Confession felt sharp, full of secrets and lies, and emotionally engaging.

The writing is tense, fast-paced, and immersive. Told through Abbey’s perspective, it pulls you right into the action, her thoughts and feelings as we follow her through every twist and turn. I liked the short chapters that kept the tension high and enhanced the suspense throughout the book. Abbey’s was a compelling character, you really got under her skin as she faced moral dilemmas, blackmail and exciting psychological dramas that really kept the thrills in this book going from start to finish.

You really are pulled into this rollercoaster of a ride that doesn't let up from the opening chapter right through to the end.

A fantastic psychological thriller, that has you on the edge of your seat and I would really recommend this.

Love, love, loved this book! I will read anything Hunter writes as he always takes us to dark places and intertwines his stories with misconceptions and the truth until my head is spinning! In this one protagonist Abbey--an expert in wrongful convictions--was 15 when her sister, Faye disappeared. Now she's drawn back to Faye's death as the body is discovered in a ravine. Was she pushed or was it suicide? It's a twisted story that kept me up all night, but I can hardly wait for Hunter's next novel!

First of all I want to thank NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC

To say my anxiety was sky high and I certainly felt on edge whilst reading this one! I honestly didn’t trust anyone and didn’t know who was telling the truth. I find myself suspicious of every single character. Quick paced thriller with twists and turns!

Thanks NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the advanced reader's copy of The Confession by M A Hunter.

This was an interesting read about a criminologist who is known for noticing small things when people are lying. She uses this to right the wrongs of the British justice system allowing for wrongful convictions to be overturned. Unfortunately, she is so committed to the work, she often does it for free leading to her business to be struggling. She needs to find a way to be paid for the work.

In addition to this problem, a secret from long ago seems to be surfacing with some help from an unknown source. Abbey must find out who is trying to ruin her reputation before it's too late, but, this means examining her recollection of those events despite how painful it is.

I enjoy the unravelling of the mystery and missteps. I would recommend this.

I leave this review voluntarily.

The Confession was the kind of book you are desperate to finish in one sitting. From start to finish the story keeps you hooked. At just over 200 pages this really is a fast-paced read.
Our focus is Abbey, a young woman who has become well-known for her work in defending people wrongly accused of crimes. When she is asked to take on a new case it offers big money…but the case is awfully close to home, and the secrets Abbey has been keeping around the murder of her younger sister years earlier are at risk.
Abbey is quickly forced into an increasingly dangerous hunt to find out who is threatening her, and who has a vested interest in ensuring she doesn’t get too close to the truth.
Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the chance to read and review this.

Okay, if you’re looking for a seriously good, keep-you-turning-the-page book, this is definitely one for you. It’s a rollercoaster ride of who did it. Abigail is a woman who tries to help people down on their luck who’ve been convicted of crimes they didn’t commit by going over their cases and finding the loopholes. That is until her sister is murdered, and her sister’s contacts her firm, stirring up her life again. Now, Abigail is on a race to find out if Terry Anderson really killed her sister or not. It’s a psychological thriller that you won’t want to put down.

I really enjoyed this one. The premise grabbed me straight away. Having the FMC as a criminologist was such a refreshing angle compared to the usual solicitor/ barrister setup you see in this type of thriller. It felt well written and the character development was genuinely strong throughout.

I did find that the pacing lagged a little in the middle and I would have loved to have been kept guessing a bit more about Anderson's innocence or guilt. A few of the smaller twists were easier to spot early on.

However, those were minor quibbles and the final stretch more than made up for it. The last reveal was brilliant and the tension in those final chapters had my pulse racing! I was suspecting everyone and second-guessing everything, which is exactly what I want from a thriller. I definifely didn't manage to piece the whole ending together.

A gripping, clever read and I'll definitely be picking up more from M. A. Hunter!

3.75 Stars, so I have rounded up to 4 stars.

The Confession is one of those psychological thrillers that’s perfect for a long weekend away or a lazy summer afternoon on the beach, the kind of book you open for “just one chapter”, and suddenly you’ve inhaled half of it. M. A. Hunter knows how to keep you hooked, and this one is packed with tension, twists, and that slow thrum of dread that keeps you turning the pages to see where it all goes next.

The story centres on Abbey Veritas, a criminologist who has built her entire career on helping the wrongfully convicted. She’s sharp, intuitive, and painfully driven, mostly because she’s carrying a heartbreak that never really healed. Abbey’s younger sister, Faye, was murdered when they were kids, and the ripples of that trauma have shaped nearly everything in her life since. That grief, that guilt, that “what if” it’s all sitting there under the surface, and the book does a great job showing how heavy that emotional load really is.

Just as Abbey is being celebrated for overturning a wrongful conviction, her world starts to tilt. The media swoops in, eager to turn her into some justice warrior, and while it boosts her profile, it also stirs up the parts of her past she’s desperate to keep tucked away. Then the anonymous messages begin to feel chilling, personal, and clearly from someone who knows far too much.

What I really enjoyed was the way the book balances the emotional side with the thriller elements. This isn’t a thriller that relies solely on shock value; it’s character-driven, with enough psychological depth to make the twists land that little bit harder. And the twists are good. Plenty of “wait, what?” moments without feeling over-the-top.

Overall, I enjoyed the ride. It’s pacey, atmospheric, and easy to fly through. If you love thrillers with emotional weight, messy family secrets, and a good mix of mystery and character drama, this is one to pop on your summer or holiday TBR. I’m definitely keen to read more from M. A. Hunter.

This is the 4th book I've read by M A Hunter and | enjoyed it immensely! It hooked me in easily from the beginning and I was curious to discover all about Abbey, a criminologist, and her business partner Sasha who help those who have suffered miscarriages of justice to appeal their wrongful convictions.
Is Abbey's desire for justice driven by what happened to her sister 30 years before ?
When terminally ill Terry Anderson, who was convicted of murdering Abbey's sister Faye thirty years before, swears his innocence and asks for her help to secure his appeal, Abbey gets pulled into reviewing his case, but it was her testimony which led to his conviction and
Abbey has a big secret which someone is now threatening to expose.
Can the "Queen of Appeals" stop her secret being revealed before her reputation ends up in tatters ?
Told solely from the point of view of Abbey, this was everything you want in a thriller/ mystery novel, with developments in the plot in all the right places to keep readers enthralled.
This is a carefully crafted tale with totally realistic characters that interact naturally.
I love M A Hunter's style of writing- no waffling, direct, clean and sharp.
If you like twisty crime fiction with believable characters, then this is for you !!
Thank you to Boldwood books and Net Galley for the advanced copy.

This thriller had me hooked from page one. The tension feels so real and grounded that it’s easy to imagine something like this unfolding in real life — which honestly made it even more unsettling in the best way. The premise alone grabbed me: a criminologist who has built her entire life around exposing lies suddenly being blackmailed with her own secret.

The story balances grief, guilt, and psychological pressure incredibly well. The main character’s inner voice felt raw and believable, and I loved how her past trauma shaped every choice she made. The pacing is sharp, the reveals are well timed, and the atmosphere has that perfect creeping dread that never fully lets you breathe.

I had a theory about what might be going on toward the end — and while I was sort of on the right track, the actual reveal still managed to shock me. That’s exactly the kind of twist I’m always hoping for in this genre.

A tense, twisty, and emotionally heavy thriller that kept me glued to the pages. Absolutely recommend if you love character-driven psychological suspense with real stakes.

Abbey is a criminologist who specialises in helping wrongly convicted people find the evidence to appeal their guilty verdict. Generally working pro bono, Abbey and her business partner Sasha struggle to keep their practice afloat. Sasha accepts an offer that promises a lucrative payment however has the capacity to lay bare Abbey's painful, secretive past.

Fast paced, this is a compelling psychological thriller with plenty of twists, turns and red herrings along the way. Abbey finds herself travelling down a path she thought would remain hidden and in doing so, must face the devastating consequence of the actions of her teenage self. M A Hunter's characterisation of Abbey is realistic and well thought out and adds to the intrigue. With plenty of surprises, an unexpected twist and short chapters (always a hit with me) this is a great page turner which I highly recommend.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for my advanced reader copy in return for my honest and unbiased review.

A truly gripping novel which will have you on the edge of your seat.

When you are the nail in the coffin (pardon the pun) in securing the fate of your younger sisters killer, although you will never fully heal from the grief -at least you know a killer is behind bars for life.
UNTIL….
Abbey is a successful criminologist with a personal secret weapon of being able to tell when people are lying, making way for those previously prosecuted being released from prison exonerated for their crimes. When you get contacted by a solicitor asking for you to take on a case against a criminal who was put away 30years ago for a crime he didn’t commit but knows who did it, what do you do?
Abbey reluctantly agrees to read the case files and then decide if she sees a successful outcome to take this under her wing, unbeknown to her she opens the case file and her sisters murderer is staring her in the face…..

Would you take on a case to free your sister’s murderer or let him continue to rot in jail????

A gripping and complex read that’ll keep you hooked to the end.

I’ve not read this author before, but wow, what a read! From the first page I found it utterly immersive and tense. Abby has a talent and that talent has secured her a prestigious job and a high reputation. When challenges about her own truths her whole world is set to fall apart.

I loved the high risk factor of this story. This isn’t just about righting a wrong to fully embrace the truth of her past she is risking everything she has and has known.

Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will definitely be checking out more from this author. Beautifully written with well crafted characters and a real depth of emotion. The only reason I didn’t score higher was down to me unfortunately figuring out the ‘bad egg’. But then I read a lot of crime fiction!

I was drawn to reading this book because the main character is a criminologist, which is what I studied at university. Abbey revisits cases to uncover miscarriages of justice. Her most recent case was a man who has spent years in jail accused of murdering his husband. Abbey discovered a flaw with an original witness statement which led to the case being overturned.
Following this, she is approached with a case of a serial killer who claims that one of the murders he was charged with wasn't him. The only problem is, Abbey was the original eye-witness who put him in prison, and it was her sister he is accused of murdering.

Abbey carries a lot of guilt over her sister's death. She was with her that day and should have been looking after her. As the story goes on, more secrets are revealed. Everyone Abbey speaks to seems to be suspicious and there are lots of twists. I was gripped by this story and couldn't put it down!

I always love an M.A. Hunter book and this one is no exception, first of what a great cover, eye catching, eerie and I love the pop of colour ❤️
Right next the book, wow what a read I was completely hooked I really enjoyed how gently it started with clearing a man in a miscarriage of justice then when Abbey gets drawn into a new case my goodness did the tension ramp up.
A twisty take that got me thinking long after the book had finished, a truly fantastic read with so many secrets to be disclosed.

The Confession by M. A. Hunter is a fast-paced, gripping thriller centered on Abbey, a criminologist who dedicates her career to helping the wrongly accused overturn their convictions—while carrying a dark and carefully hidden past of her own. When Abbey begins to question her abilities, she is forced to confront the truth behind the secrets that have been haunting her for years and question whether she’s more connected to the danger than she ever realized.

This book kept me fully engaged from start to finish. The pacing is quick, the tension steadily builds, and the mystery surrounding Abbey’s past pulled me in immediately. I ended up reading it in a single day because I genuinely wanted to know how everything would unfold.

Overall, The Confession is an entertaining and suspenseful read that will appeal to fans of psychological thrillers with strong female leads and buried secrets. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 stars)

Another gripping thriller from M A Hunter. The plot is centred around Abbey, a woman who makes her living uncovering truths and overturning miscarriages of justices, using her skill to excel in reading people. Through her work she is approached in connection with a convicted murderer who has, amongst his convictions, been convicted of the killing of Abbey's sister Faye 30 years previously. Abbey receives threatening communication from an unknown source suggesting that Abbey was somehow involved in Faye's death and that she must tell the truth. What follows is a tale of Abbey looking to uncover her mysterious stalker and avenge her sisters unlawful killing.

With some interesting characters and a gripping plot this is another worthy read from a talented author, on point for readers of psychological fiction.

My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read The Confession in exchange for an honest review.
The story follows Abbey, who works to help people prove their innocence. Early on, the book is gripping: a man is released for the murder of his partner, though it’s hinted he may actually be guilty. At the same time, Abbey is asked to help the man convicted of her sisters murder as well as many others. The book follows Abbey as we start to see lies she told about the murder of her sister.
Abbey is portrayed as a master at uncovering lies, but at times she feels like an unreliable narrator, making mistakes and bending the truth herself. Despite this, the story is fast-paced, with intriguing twists and several tense, suspenseful moments.
That said, the middle of the book did lose a little momentum for me, and by the end some of the plot felt quite unrealistic.
Overall, a 3.5⭐ read for me — entertaining, suspenseful, and with a twist, but not quite as strong as it started.

A very dark novel, based around the compilations of the justice system and one woman who is determined to free the innocent.

Abbey can't say no to a convicted criminal who maintains their innocence and has become an expert at trawling through the evidence in search of the truth. In an ironic twist, someone is accusing Abbey herself of committing a crime that another person is serving time for; that of the murder of her younger sister, Faye, 30 years ago.

The stakes are higher than ever for Abbey, who surrounded by people from her past, the legal representatives of the convicted man, hungry journalists and an unknown stalker, needs to seek out the truth now more than ever.

A gripping, multi-layer and fast paced plot.

Abbey is a criminologist who specializes in providing investigative assistance to people who have been wrongly accused/convicted. She is an expert in high demand. Abbey's job depends on her skills to dig out the truth and find the clues the prosecutor's office missed. Her stress levels remain high at all times. But each time she corrects justice's errors, she pushes her own guilt further away. When Abbey was much younger, her sister was murdered. Abbey's testimony helped convict the accused. Someone is making Abbey's conscience question if she really saw what she testified to. As the tension amplifies in her personal and professional life, readers are provided clues that could lean either way. Abbey must decide if the real man was convicted or if the killer is still out there because of her.

3⭐️ for “The Confession”

The only thing I highlighted in this books was: “My toes are making fists inside my shoes”. Absolute banger of a quote, 10/10 for that one alone.

The story follows Abbey, a modern day vigilante saving innocent people from wrongful conviction. When the law comes back around to bite her in the ass, Abbey gets into quite a lot of trouble.
It is stated that Abbey has a talent for uncovering lies. Famous for it, even. Though we mostly see Abbey making mistakes, wrong guesses, and spinning some lies of herself. This made her an unrelieable narrator.

I overall enjoyed the story. It was fast paced with interesting characters and a good twist.

The story started off really strong, I was really hooked early and the premise was great. There were a couple of things happening at once so I was intrigued to see where it all went. Unfortunately, it lost steam towards the middle, and by the end it became quite unrealistic and honestly a bit ridiculous. The pacing was good throughout but I couldn't connect with any of the characters, the setting wasn't quite descriptive enough to paint a picture, and it was largely predictable, so it all kind of fell flat for me unfortunately.

Fans of legal thrillers that are able to suspend belief will still probably really enjoy this book.

What another brilliant book from M A Hunter. Criminologist Abbey is very well known for helping to overturn miscarriages of justice. Thirty years previously Abbey’s 13 year old sister was murdered. She feels she should have done more for her and thats what keeps her motivated. The thing is Abbey has secrets and someone is threatening to expose them but she won’t let that happen without a fight. This is intense, well paced and with plenty of twists and turns. At one point I thought I knew what the outcome was but then having read the author’s previous books I just knew there was more to come! All in all a cracking psychological thriller that I’d highly recommend.

Abbey is a Criminologist and is well known for helping overturn miscarriages of justice. But thirty years ago, she witnessed the death of her sister by child killer Terry Anderson. But did she? Terry Anderson is still incarcerated in prison and is dying. His last wish is to tell the truth before he dies. He didn’t kill Abbey’s sister, and the killer is still out there.
This was a tense, nail biting read and I enjoyed it for the most part. I did guess who the real preparator in the middle of the book, but it didn’t stop me reading. I just a bit disappointed with the ending. I was expecting a bit more than it delivered. 4 stars from me.

When I tell you this book, I was so sure of the fact that I knew that twist at the end I knew already reading this book that I already knew the twist that was coming. The way the author gives you enough to make you confident that you’ve already figured out the book you haven’t. The main character is kind of annoying, but I think at the end you understand, I literally have been in a reading stand still, but I was able to once I got into this book passed a couple chapters. Get past this because I wanted to know what the confession was. Read this book! It’s very unique and let me know if you figured it all out before the end.

Abbey's skills and personal history - a talent for spotting lies and a younger sister who disappeared under mysterious circumstances decades ago - have led her to an unusual path in life.

She helps innocent people dealing with wrongful convictions. Except that Abbey is now facing a situation where she is on the receiving end of unwanted scrutiny...

This is an entertaining read, with a number of twists, and gets 3.5 stars.

At the police station she said she saw Terry Anderson in the woods the time her sister disappeared.
Years later she becomes an expert in getting people released from prison with wrongful convictions.
Terry tries to employ her as he has always declared his innocence.
