My Thoughts - Story This review is combined for both books…
I have to start this off by saying that I am not being biased because of Beta Reading this book, nor that Michelle is such a sweet buddy of mine. She knows that I am honest and I was honest while reading and did have some issues with the first read through. So enough said about that and let’s get on to the review.
I had no clue when I started reading this that it was going to have so much of a paranormal aspect to it. But not what you are thinking…this is about ghosts and the other world that exists in ours. What a great story aspect as it is set in New Orleans and I can’t think of any other place better than NOLA for a story like this to be set.
So Michelle mixes a sexy rocker god with a beautiful paranormal ghost and twists a tale around the two of them. She takes a man who doesn’t believe and converts him to do anything necessary in order to bring Thyme into his existence. Then she takes Thyme who only believed in the one true love of her life and turns her around to give love a second chance with Billy.
I have to say that yeah, I may be partial to Michelle’s books but she nailed this…and mixed these genres up perfectly.
Even if you aren’t a big fan of the paranormal…this one is different – so give it a try.
Re-Cap Billy is a star with his harmonica – but something strange happens when he plays it. Something so strange that it doesn’t faze him much when the ghost of Thyme shows up in his new rental. But who is she and why is the attraction so strong between the two of them?
Set in NOLA during the Mardi Gras…enjoy the magical and mesmerizing aspects of the city while reading a tantalizing romance.

Wow! What an ending for Billy and Thyme. What a world Mankin has created!
In this final installment of Strange Magic (but only the beginning of the series!) we learn more about Billy Blade and his connection to Thyme. We also learn more about about the Immortals and what they're up to. Strange Magic is an incredible story about second chances at love but it's so much more. Mankin created a fantastic mythological world, set in New Orleans, and is really setting the stage for what comes next.
I liked how Mankin used circumstances in her mythological world to mirror ones in our own. The battle lines have been drawn and change is a comin'. I also liked the comparison between the Mississippi River -- caring for her people, healing them -- and Thyme's mother, doing the same.
Mankin demonstrates her remarkable talent as she deftly incorporated her mythological world -- the In Between -- into that of New Orleans. I knew she could create kickass, realistic rock worlds. Here, she proved she's equally able to conjure a world of imagination -- one with bioluminescent waterfalls and duality demons. A world populated with Zeus, Hades, Ares, and Bacchus -- gods who set the rules that are being called into question.
At it's heart, though, is the love story. Both Billy and Thyme had love and lost it. Both were "dead" until they found one another. All the elements Mankin surrounded Billy and Thyme with -- poetry and music -- were a delight. Their end is not the end and I'm eager to see where things go from here.
I had such a good time reading part one of this book, and because it ended with such a big cliffhanger, I continued on with the read as soon as I finished part one. Normally I don’t continue on immediately, unless I am totally loving the read, and this one had me invested almost from the beginning of part one. I should mention that if you have not read part one, and want to, then you probably should not read this review due to spoilers. And this one will make so much more sense if you read part one first, as this is not a stand alone book.
This one starts out ten years after the end of part one. Billy Blade is on vacation until his next country music concert, and has picked New Orleans for a place to both rest and take part in the Mardi Gras celebrations. He has rented an apartment, and it’s not long before he realizes that it’s haunted by a beautiful young woman. Thyme died ten years before, and haunts the apartment she shared in life with her grandmother. This is the beginning of Billy and Thyme’s love story. A ghost love story not your thing? This is very different I promise you, and well worth the read.
As in part one, I loved the character of Thyme. Even as a ghost, she hasn’t lost her caring personality, and her capacity to love. Only the object of her love is no longer Shane, but instead Billy. Shane is no longer in the picture-and that’s a whole other story which I won’t go into. Billy is a country mega star, but really down to earth. He’s had his own tragedy in the past. I really loved Billy as well, and the romance between them was so sweet and tragic, you know because she’s dead and all, and is what is known as a shade in this supernatural world. The villain of this story, as in the first part, is Leon. He is the embodiment of evil itself, and not human. To make it even more interesting, Zeus and Hades also show up in this installment.
New Orleans as a setting of a supernatural story is perfect. This takes it one step further, and puts the opening to the Underworld there. The Underworld depicted here is so different, and I found it fascinating-not something I usually am while reading stories featuring mythology. In this world, vampires, shades, demon dogs..the list goes on and on, all reside in the Underworld during the day, and spend their nights up above. That is just part of the excellent world building by this author. And there is quite a bit of world building-always a good thing in my opinion. There’s even a glossary at the end if you need any further explanation. While I didn’t need it with this book, there sure have been a few books that I wished had one!
As in part one, there are plenty of obstacles to overcome, villains to fight, and lot of new characters are introduced-most of which figure prominently, and either further the story or add to the main characters back story.
To me, this was a wonderful paranormal romance. It had all the elements I need in one, the supernatural couple, good sexy times, the paranormal elements, problems to overcome, fantastic world building, and just as important, no cliffhanger. Pretty perfect.

Strange Magic Part two is the most unique paranormal book I have ever read! I love paranormal and this book is like most of Mankin's other books with a hot sexy country singer named Billy Blade, it is modern but with a twist this book blends today with the mystical past. The main female character is unique in her own right, she is a creole beauty a sweet sensual girl named Thyme Bellerose. In a wink of an eye the story will transform you into a magical world filled with intrigue and mystery, it is as if it started on a black and white TV and then becomes this amazing technicolor world in which we meet the most unique fantastical characters. The book is so detailed that you will feel as if you are walking the cobblestone streets of New Orleans and smell the rich aroma of the beautiful bountiful city that it truly is. Must read 5- magical stars! As a huge fan of Michelle Mankin's, I will admit I was a bit skeptical about reading this latest book of hers since I am not a paranormal fan at all. I just don't read it. However, I was so pleasantly surprised at how much I absolutely adored this story. It kept me glued to my ereader from page one.
Book 2 picks up shortly after the end of Book 1,which is a great backstory unto itself. Our hero, Billy Blade, is touching down in New Orleans for a much needed break and for some time to recharge the creative juices. From the time he stays at the former apartment of one Thyme Bellerose, whom we met in Book 1 and has seemingly gone missing once Hurricane Katrina hit 10 years prior, magical things start to happen. Since Billy has a gift of summoning spirits with his harmonica, he isn't all that surprised when Thyme starts to make her presence known to him when he in the apartment. And so starts a truly spiritual love affair.
This book is so engaging. From the minute Thyme and Billy start to spend time together, there is this unmistakable chemistry that you just can't ignore. Even though she is a spirit and he is living mortal, they have more in common that one might think, and as the story progresses we learn more about why Billy has his gift and how he might be able to save Thyme from an afterlife in limbo.
The author pays attention to detail and this book was very well researched. With NOLA and Mardi Gras as the background, the book uses many familiar sights and sounds. In addition, the description of the 'spiritual underworld' and those that inhabit it, was uncanny. I often felt like I was really there and have to say was happily drawn into that unfamiliar atmosphere.
Although this story is paranormal at the surface, in the end it is a story of true love, fate, hope and resilience. The secondary characters, some kind, some downright evil, had me completely engaged the entire time. There are some incredible revelations and some very magical scenes that truly blew me away.
I encourage you, even if you were not a pnr fan like I was, to give this book a chance. If you know Michelle Mankin's work at all, you'll know she writes from the heart and gives the reader storylines that are truly well written and captivating. I was mesmerized at discovering a genre not familiar to me, yet walked away loving every word.
This is the first book in awhile that I finished and wished I would have read slower so I could still be enjoying it, BUT it's one that you can't put down and have to keep reading to find out what will happen. I absolutely LOVED it and I usually don't read paranormal. The first Part was good and more of an introduction to the characters, but this part two takes you on a ride you aren't expecting and one you don't want to get off. It is told from both Thyme and Billy's POV.
This books shows that love and fate are a powerful things and can do amazing things. We are introduced to an underworld filed with all types beings. We find out where Thyme has gone and what she has dealt with in the past ten years since her death. Billy has made his way to New Orleans and is staying in Thymes old apartment, which happens to be Thyme's safe place. Billy and Thyme make an amazing connection and friendship. They both have lost someone they loved and help each other heal a little.
We get so much detail and information throughout the book. We learn how people are connected, how secrets were kept and how everything changes. This book was so well written and you can tell the amount of research that went into it. It pulls you in and you won't want to come out. Im so excited that there will be more. This was so different from Michelle's other series but she can do no wrong and this is a must read for any paranormal, lover.
Sooo....I've been thinking about writing this review since last night and for the life of me, I still can't find the right words to adequately explain how amazing this book is! Michelle Mankin more than rocked it with Strange Magic! Admittedly, I'm far from a paranormal fan in general, but apparently if it's a paranormal written by Michelle Mankin, I'm a super-fan!
Strange magic -both parts -were written with such exceptional talent. This author has an amazing gift and we are so unbelievably lucky that she shares it with us. I can't get enough of her work!
The characters in Strange Magic are very well developed and while they fit themselves in with the real world, they definitely exist on their own plane. They sucked me into their story and kept me captivated through the very end!
Strange Magic Part 2 enthralled me as much as part 1 and then some. Honestly, this second part enraptured me even more than the first part! I didn't want to see it end, but I couldn't put it down either! I can't wait for more from Michelle Mankin!
Powerful paranormal series! I'm not usually one to grab a paranormal story but Mankin is a wonderful writer and I'm a big fan of her rock series. I was given a copy for review after I read Part One. This continues right afterward so it is important to read that first as we found out what happened to Thyme. Billy and Thyme have a connection deeper than anyone and their fate is already sealed. In life and death they have a bond that is far greater than anything. We can feel their love and emotions as plain as anything. If you are a fan of Greek mythology you will enjoy the references to Hades and Zeus and how it all connects to this special Bacchus Parade. Imagine falling in love with a ghost and not being able to do anything about it. While dealing with this strange romance they are also finding out about their parents and how their pasts are all connected. Very well written with intertwined storylines and wonderfully exciting characters, I'd love to find out more about Morpheus.
I totally fell in love with Michelle's new 'genre' of writing in Strange Magic Part One. I had no idea where she was going to take the characters that she introduced us two in Part One. And HOLY OH MY GOODNESS!!! I mean, wow, this story was awesome. I loved how Michelle wrote about the interesting and new relationship between Thyme and Billy. And the twists and turns of how everyone and everything is intertwined!! I mean, it's a beautifully written story and I absolutely cannot wait for the next chapter in this series.
The relationship that she has created with Thyme and Billy is one that left my heart aching and broken, but happy and restored all at the same time. I don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling it for you - but it's a ride worth going on.
There was seriously one point in which I honestly thought Michelle was going to make me have to just go crazy!! She redeems herself in a BIG BIG way!!!
The story is just that good....
Michelle has always rocked the rocker romance...now she is totally rocking the paranormal world as well!!
Part 1 of Strange Magic is an introduction, a brief "nice to meet you" that still manages to give a lot of depth. Part 2 is the meat of the story, and it pulls you in to this amazing world of Billy & Thyme. It's not a conventional story at all - and I can't say too much about the background because there's just SO MUCH that you need to discover for yourself. I don't want to risk spoiling any of the "OH! That's where they're going w/ this!" moments because they really are beautifully written! : )
I will say that the emotion between Billy & Thyme as they're discovering things about each other and about themselves is so strong that it leaps off the page. The relationships that are weaved into the story (friendships, family, and romance) are just so well done... I'm having trouble coming up w/ another word besides beautiful. If you like your romance sprinkled with some mystery & a whole lot of magic, you're going to adore this story! : )
I jumped right into part two as soon as I finished part one because of the shocking cliff hanger we are left with.... Now, it's ten years later and things certainly are different at Chantelle Grace. Strange things are happening to Billy Blaze who is staying there while in New Orleans. And, it just happens to be Mardi Gras....... There is so much going on here, I was enchanted with this totally different kind of love story, but there is evil lurking, just waiting for another chance to strike out.....secrets come to light, and things are about to change again. This time it's forever!
This has got all the right elements but the pacing or storytelling was off. Not sure what didn't quite work with this one. Too much mythology thrown at the reader without the proper set up. It just was introduced along the way, these mythological creatures and super strength, gifts, and immortality and the MCs sort of shrugged and said, all right, lets go....and the male MC is supposed to be 22, before I was told that I imagined him closer to 40... too much had happened in his life prior to the beginning of the story. I guess I'm shrugging and moving on too.
One of my favourite things that I adore about being a book review/blogger is that you get to meet some amazing authors along the way. The majority of authors whom you review books for will come and go, but there is a group of them who you will become closer to and you will develop a friendship with and for me one of those authors is Michelle Mankin. The other thing you get to have a sneak peek into is the origins of books and the stories and you get a little background on the research done for stories - like Michelle's amazing trip to New Orleans, Mardi Gras and catching a glimpse of the filming of NCIS: New Orleans. Reading her Strange Magic Part #1 and now Part #2 makes me want to visit New Orleans as it sounds amazing , the food, the music and the people and of course being a big fan of NCIS: New Orleans - how could I not love it. Back to the book at hand - in Part #1 we read as musician Billy Blade sang a concert and started his musical career , we read about Thyme and her boyfriend Shane getting caught up in a dangerous game which ended deadly and then disaster struck with Hurricane Katrina. Now onto Part #2 - Strange Magic. It is ten years later and Billy Blade is still an amazing musician, he has returned back to New Orleans and in some places ,it still looks and sounds the same but in others affected by the Hurricane - it is a ghost town. Billy rents a small apartment which readers discover has connections to Thyme and her family. Billy learns briefly about how Thyme and her boyfriend Shane disappeared ten years ago and hasn't been seen since. The thing is though that Billy has a gift, he can see the supernatural and mystical things around him and staring back at him with purple eyes - eyes he hasn't seen in ten years since he was last singing in New Orleans is Thyme Bellarose. Read as Billy discovers the truth about what happened that fateful night and then for those who love romance - as the chemistry sizzles and unfolds between the two in front of our eyes. I loved reading Strange Magic Part #2 as it refreshed not only my memory of characters from the first book but also had a Ghost Whisperer meets Being Human feel to the story. I am now looking forward to reading Strange Magic's sequel "Dream Magic".
Audiobook Review: Dream Magic tells us the story of Morpheus & Cecilia as well as Billy & Thyme's story interweaved into the narrative. As, with book one each chapter begins with music & poetry quotes which reflect the chapter. World building descriptions & settings are well detailed. Brimming with love, sadness, reams of action, seductive moments and beautiful poetry. A perfect fantasy listen.
Narators Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross bring into existence a magical beautiful tale with such passion and ecstasy.
•••I listened to the Audible Audio Edition of this book•••
Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross breathe life into the characters. Without their amazing performance I do not think I would get all the subtleties in the different character relationships. They make the listening experience both a joy and an addiction every time! The addition of poetry and eerie music really lent ambience to the listening experience. I can't wait to hear what they narrate next!
This series must be listened to (or read) in order. The first book is Strange Magic Part One. This is the second (and hopefully not last) book in the series. I will be very sad if this is the end of the series!
Thyme is a Shade and she has been searching for ten years for her lost fiance. Her apartment in the French Quarter is her refuge and Haunt. Usually she cannot wait for a new tenant to leave... But not this time. Billy intrigues her. Does he really see her? Is it worth breaking the rules to spend time with him? Why is she so drawn to him? Is their burgeoning relationship worth risking obliteration over?
Billy is finally getting used to the ghosts. Finding out his new digs in New Orleans are Haunted should have him running for the hills. But he isn't. After catching sight of the beautiful ghost girl he is shocked to see that she is the woman who was begging him to save her during his last concert. How can that be when she died over ten years ago? Why does she make him feel so much more than any other woman ever has? How can he be with a Shade? Can he right the wrongs that stole her from him before they even met?
***This series is suitable for adult listeners (or readers) who enjoy urban fantasy filled with Old Gods and creatures of legend with suspense, intrigue, black magic, thrills, mystery and horror as well as a dash of romance :)
This was the first book I have read by this author and I was very impressed!! This is appropriate for those 18+ due to some sexual scenes. This book is in the perspective of 2 characters and I loved the fact that each chapter is titled to show whose character is active. This book is in 2 parts and was done very well. I absolutely love Billy Blade. He is a musician, a big star in the music industry! He parties and enjoys his fast life. Although there are reasons he enjoys it that are not shown quickly! There are very few people he trusts. He has a huge heart and loves so completely! I absolutely adore him! He has quite a few secrets that you will have to read the story to find out!!! Thyme is wonderful and absolutely surprised the hell out of me. On a regular basis I was surprised with the twists in this story. Her dreams are coming true and she is a happy woman when tragedy strikes. The things she is willing to do to protect those she loves is astonishing and brave. I adore her friends and family. This book had some wonderfully complex themes happening. I loved the fact that it felt like I was in NOLA!!! There are many other surprises that I loved but I do not want to give anything away. Do yourself a favor and pick up this 5 star book as soon as you can!! It will keep you interested from the beginning and is not a super short read that you will run through super fast. This story is jam packed with action! It was nice to get to read a book that lasted longer than an afternoon. I am going to be waiting for the next book to read the minute I get it. Thank you very much Michelle Mankin for your wonderful story!! I will be waiting!!! Reviewed for HeadTripping Books by April.
I recently listened to this book on Audible.com Here is my review:
"Love Love Love this series!!!!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Strange Magic - Part Two to be better than the print version? Most definitely!! Listening to the book brings it more to life much more than I could ever imagine reading the book on my own.
What other book might you compare Strange Magic - Part Two to and why? The Tempest series also written by Michelle Mankin.
What about Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross ’s performance did you like? I have listened to many books narrated by Kai and Wen. Every book they read gets better and better. In fact, I found many new authors because of them. I have purchased book is solely on just wanting to listen to them. They read with emotion and passuon. And every character has their own voice. They are true storytellers. And listening to Wen's smokin' hot voice is just an added bonus.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? There were many. Too many to count. This book if filled with sad and happy moments alike.
Any additional comments? After listening to the first book I immediately purchased this one. I couldn't imagine this book being much better than first, but it was. It was filled with love, sadness, hot sex, and lots of action, and beautiful poetry. Michelle Mankin is one of my favorite writers and I will read any book she releases. Her lyrical writing is nothing more than beautiful and she sprinkles magic over each page she writes.
The same goes for the narrators Kai Kennicot and Wen Ross. They bring such passion into every book they read. I will never get tired of listening to them.
This is the second book in the Magic Series and you do need to read Strange Magic first. I was not really into this book. It starts off talking about Cecilia and her sister Amelia. In the beginning, their parents are murdered and they are taken prisoner. They are transported eventually to Phoebus and his Kingdom of Light. Since both Cecilia and Amelia are Dark Immortals, they are the slaves of Phoebus. He has searched for a while for someone to take the place of his previous Oracle and Cecilia is the one. Early on Amelia dies from wounds inflicted by Phoebus and it makes Cecilia hate him even more. One of the main problems I had with this book is the multiple points of view. Not only to we have the story of Cecilia, but partway through, you jump to Billy and Thyme from book 1. Then after a while, you jump back to Cecilia. Near the end, the characters all come together in Phoebus’ kingdom, but it’s choppy. In my opinion, there are just too many points of view and it is easy to get lost.
I have to say that even though paranormal romances are not my typical books I read that this two part series may have converted me. I gave it a chance because as far as rock romance authors go Michelle Mankin is one of the best and now I can see that she has successfully taken on a new genre.
As Blade and Thyme’s story continues it takes you through what destiny is possibly all about. I loved how some of the relationships were linked from the very beginning without a hint beforehand. Blade and Thyme’s romance is one for the books with the deep devotion and loved that they felt toward each other and the lengths that they were willing to go to hang onto the other was really heartfelt. I think that I also fell in love with Morpheus and can’t wait to hear more about him. If you are a lover of paranormal romances this would be the book for you and if you haven’t really given them a chance yet this is a great book to help you change your mind.
*I received an ARC from the author in exchange for posting my honest opinion*
The second part does a great job continuing the action started in the first book. I really liked Billy's return to the story. His character showed depth and the emotion from all the characters kept me invested in the story. There were also quite a few surprise reveals that kept my attention and had me guessing up until the end. My only complaint was that some parts drug a little more in the second book, especially while gearing up for a major shift. Regardless, I truly enjoyed the world Mankin created and appreciated how she left the broad storyline open while delivering a satisfying conclusion for the couple. I'm excited to see where the next book takes us.
Based on Audio Book Where does Dream Magic rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far? I love this audiobook definitely in my top 10.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dream Magic? Most memorable would have to be when Morpheus first sees Cecilia at the court.
Which character – as performed by Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross – was your favorite? Morpheus I was impatient since Dream Magic part 1 for Wen to completely embrace the character of Morpheus and he did not disappoint
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? Yes omg Michelle Mankin writes Magic and Wen and Kai brings that magic to life
What an incredibly imaginative story! I was hooked from the very beginning. I listened every single moment I could! This story was filled with hope and determination. It was also filled with love. I loved every single moment. The characters were amazing! This was such a creatively unique story. I wish I could of read on and on. The only thing I didn't really like was that a few of the scenes I wish were drawn out a little more. I feel they were just a tad rushed over. Other than that, the story was great. I will be going back and re-reading! I fully recommend this!
