A sizzling, high-stakes dark romantasy perfect for fans of Carissa Broadbent and Callie Hart.
Twenty-one-year-old Skylar Azdaja rules as Queen of Maureia – flame-forged and utterly alone.
With traitors lurking in her court and a dark magic awakening across the six realms, Skylar trusts no one. She’s descended from the first dragons, and the eternal fire in her blood burns hot... and deadly.
When she discovers that her Soul Bonded is none other than her greatest enemy – Demir Vjeran, crown prince of Morgad – she will do anything in her power to break the unbreakable bond. But keeping her friends close and her dangerously seductive enemy closer? That might just cost her everything.
As she fights to resist the pull of the explosive chemistry between them, the King of Morgad is raising a dark army in the shadows – one powerful enough to bring the realms to their knees.
With war on the horizon, Skylar prepares to sacrifice everything to protect her queendom. Even if it means surrendering herself to the bonds of fate... and coming face-to-face with death itself.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️ When Darkness Reigns is a gripping enemies to lovers Romantasy unlike many others. I really loved the magic system in here, with each kingdom having their own unique powers! As a book lover and anime lover the magic felt similar to that of those you find in a fantasy anime! While I did struggle with the writing style a little it didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the actual story!
Skyler is a ruthless Queen who loves her people deeply and is willing to sacrifice everything to be the leader her people needs, including her sanity, chance at love, and her own life. But, despite her ruthlessness she’s still a young woman (21) who is flawed and constantly fighting self doubt, while still trying to keep her people safe from an equally ruthless King who plans to take over not just her kingdom but the entire country. Skyler isn’t just ruthless to her enemies but to those she leads. Betrayal’s are dealt with brutally, as in she beat one of her commander to near death brutally.
Things begin to change for Skyler when she finds herself soul bonded to Damir the son of the King who threatens her people’s very existence.
Skyler now has to save her people from the tyrant king who plans to use dark magic to take over the country, while struggling to come to terms with her new bond and perhaps her first chance at feeling true love, betray from those she once considered friends and battling the panic.
If you love a fierce FMC with an insatiable bloodlust, brutal fights, enemies to lovers, steamy smut and just a little bit of fem dom! Then When Darkness Reigns is for you!
What a journey! First, I want to say thank you for letting me be apart of the ARC team. I had a really fantastic time reading this. I found the world vast and well throughout—the characters complex and each had their own distinct voice and I enjoyed where the plot took us. At times (particularly at the beginning), I found the use of backstories-mainly to understand character relationships-were info-dumpy. I wish they were weaved in more with the story itself. I also wished we saw more of Skylar’s pain in her panic than being told about it. I really wanted to feel what she did and be by her side, which was a little laking. But overall, I really enjoyed this book and will continue reading books this author puts out. :)
When Darkness Reigns was my first taste of Dark Romantasy and I couldn’t be happier that it was this book!
From the moment I opened the book and started reading I was transported into the action, heartache and war that is Queen Skylars world. Thrown through a whirlwind of events and emotions. From deception and lies, torture and fight scenes to lust, love and spice.
Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen next I would be stopped in my tracks with something totally different (and often gobsmacking) happening.
Queen Skylar is honestly a bloody badass and I love her. She is a complex character, not only fierce and strong with a love for violence and an absolute force of nature with her ruling but doubts of self worthy and sufferer of panic attacks - which I felt to my core!
Then there’s Prince Demir... on the outside he is smug and seemed like a d!ck. But honestly, there was so much more to him and he had me falling!
This book had me going through all the emotions. I laughed, I got angry, I was shocked, a little nauseated at the (incredible) violent description, I got goose bumps and my gosh I cried.
I will say the only thing I wished was that it was a longer book, or even a duology. The book and Leilas writing is incredible, the storyline had my heart pulling in all directions but I felt like there were parts (only a few) l’d love to have more information on or had it drawn out longer.
I did absolutely love this book though and am so glad to have been given the opportunity to read it. 4 Star rating and already wish I could erase my memory just to reread and relive the story and emotions all over again.
A sizzling, high-stakes dark romantasy following Skylar Azdaja, the flame-forged Queen of Maureia, who stands utterly alone as traitors stalk her court and ancient magic stirs across the six realms. When she discovers her Soul Bonded is her greatest enemy—Demir Vjeran, crown prince of Morgad—she’ll do anything to break the bond… even as the chemistry between them threatens to burn her from the inside out.
With a dark army rising and war looming, Skylar must decide what she’s willing to sacrifice to save her queendom—even if that means surrendering to fate itself.
✨ What I enjoyed: • A morally grey (maybe even black) FMC • A powerful heroine who still struggles with insecurity and emotion • The found family moments • Fated mates • He falls first and hard (always a win 😍)
🤷♀️ What didn’t land for me: • A bit too much focus on the FMC’s past relationship with another guy • I love morally grey women, but she crossed into straight-up cruel at times—especially toward her friends • Some scenes just weren’t quite my taste personally
Overall: Not totally my cup of tea, but I can absolutely see this hitting hard for many readers. If you love dark heroines, explosive chemistry, and destiny-tangled enemies, this one might be your next obsession. 🗡️❤️🔥
ARC REVIEW ❤️ Anyone looking for a standalone fantasy novel is going to love this book! Especially if you hate waiting for the next book to come out like I do when the first one ends on a cliffhanger! This has a HEA at the end which makes everyone happy 😊 The main character has a lot of depth, and is written beautifully as someone who is fierce, strong, able, and driven! I also thought the magic and world systems were unique and different from what I’ve read previously! The stakes are high throughout the entire book, and I couldn’t stop reading to find out what was going to happen! Some of the parts of this book I thought could have been longer, or even dragged out a bit, as I felt there were some events towards the end of the book that happened really quickly! But apart from that, I did love When Darkness Reigns 😍 Make sure you check the triggers before diving in as it is a dark fantasy! But if you love fierce heroine, dark magic, high stakes, fated mates and intense chemistry between the two main characters then you will love this book 💟
When darkness reigns by Leila Thorne was definitely a 5 ⭐️ read! I was captured from the first chapter! We follow our FMC Queen Skylar and our MMC prince Demir. Skylar is a badass independent woman who rules her court with an iron fist and secretly a kind heart.
Enemies to lovers Death on the page Spicy spice Fated mates Oracle Curve balls (as in things you don’t expect) Magic Fae
This is a Romantasy with a happily ever after, but the story to get there is not like the others which made me enjoy it that much more
I received an ARC of When Darkness Reigns by Leila Thorne in exchange for an honest review, and wow, this one’s different. I’m super picky with fantasy; so much of it feels recycled or forced, but this is completely original.
The story follows Skylar, the newly crowned Queen of Maureia. She’s powerful, inspiring, completely messed up, and a little crazy, but damn, she’s fiercely dedicated to her people.
The book starts slow, but it ramps up fast, and before I knew it, I couldn’t put it down. Skylar’s relationships with her crew feel real and heartfelt, making you care about every single one of them.
The storytelling is raw, gritty, and unapologetically honest. When Darkness Reigns is addictive, unforgettable, and exactly the kind of fantasy I live for.
A fierce, dark romantasy filled with power, tension, and a queen who refuses to break.
When Darkness Reigns is a gripping, high-stakes romantasy that blends political intrigue, dark magic, and explosive enemies-to-lovers tension. Leila Thorne builds a world that feels expansive and dangerous, with each realm possessing its own magic and history that adds depth to the story.
Skylar Azdaja, Queen of Maureia and descendant of the first dragons, is easily the strongest part of this book. She’s powerful, ruthless when needed, but also deeply human struggling with isolation, anxiety, and the constant burden of leading a kingdom that’s always one step away from collapse. Her fierce determination and underlying vulnerability make her an incredibly compelling FMC.
The dynamic between Skylar and Demir, the crown prince of an enemy kingdom, is intense in all the right ways. Their connection is complicated, reluctant, and full of tension that slowly shifts into something deeper. If you love fated mates, enemies to lovers, “touch her and die” energy, and emotionally messy bonds, you’ll find a lot to enjoy here.
The world-building stands out with its unique magic systems and rising sense of dread as dark forces move across the realms. The political maneuvering, betrayals, and rising war add to the momentum and keep the stakes high throughout.
I did find the writing style a little uneven in places, and some emotional moments felt like they could have used more time to breathe. But the heart of the story Skylar’s growth, the magic, the tension, and the overarching conflict kept me fully invested.
Trope lovers, you’ll find: ✨ Strong FMC 🔥 Enemies to Lovers 🩸 Dark Magic & High Stakes 👑 Political intrigue 💀 Feminine Rage 💞 Fated Mates 🌶️ Moderate spice (🌶️🌶️🌶️)
If you enjoy fierce heroines, dark worlds, intense chemistry, and stories where power and vulnerability collide, When Darkness Reigns is definitely worth picking up.
Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC. This review is voluntary and my honest opinion
The beginning pulled me in instantly, dramatic, intense, atmospheric. I was so ready. As the story unfolded, I realized it took a VERY long time (nearly 50% into the book) for Skylar and Demir to finally meet in a way that mattered. Yes, they went to school together, but that did absolutely nothing for their connection and the story line.
And when the romance finally kicked in… it felt like it appeared out of thin air. Demir being in love with her from the beginning made sense, but Skylar? Her feelings just kind of happened, with barely any buildup. They had maybe one or two truly meaningful moments before suddenly acting like fate had chained them together (cause it literally did). It made the relationship feel rushed rather than earned and it felt like they ONLY got together because of the bond.
I also didn’t feel much character development from almost all of the characters. Everyone stayed more or less the same throughout, which flattened the emotional impact of the story overall.
But despite these things, Skylar herself completely stole the show (and also my heart) for me. She’s such a beautifully complex character, painfully aware of how broken she truly is, haunted by what she’s become, yet still unable to escape the cruelty expected of her as queen. And the best part? Her friends stay by her side not out of fear, but because they know she cares for them deep down, even when she struggles to show it (or even when she beats them up). That loyalty, that quiet understanding, was one of my favorite parts of the entire book.
And honestly? I desperately wished for a dual POV. Seeing Demir’s perspective, especially with his long-standing feelings, would’ve added so much depth and emotional strength to their bond.
In the end, even with its flaws, this was an intriguing story with a protagonist who truly shines.
And as an ARC reader, I want to say this clearly: I love Leila as an author, and I’ll keep supporting her and her books in the future. Thank you so much for this opportunity to dive into your story!
Okay, where do I even start?! Leila, this book had me absolutely hooked (thanks girl)— Skylar Azdaja, Queen of Maureia, is the definition of a fierce and chaotic FMC. Bloodlust? Check. Anxiety? Check. Unstoppable determination and emotional damage? Double check.
Skylar’s story is a whirlwind of loss, power, and resilience. She’s been through hell (thanks to the Morgadian King — we hate him 😤🤷🏻♀️), but her strength and grit kept me rooting for her every step of the way. Also… the tension with Demir? Let’s just say the enemies-to-lovers spark was sparking. I loved seeing their shared past and how much emotional depth came with it — give me that golden retriever energy any day.
The world-building was fantastic — dark, magical, and layered with betrayal, redemption, and spice (yes, there’s spice 👀). Every character felt so real, with flaws and emotions that made the story impossible to put down.
Also, I’m still not over Visarous (no spoilers, but… I have feelings 😭). The ending tied things up nicely, though I wouldn’t complain if we got more stories from this world — Cain and Jade, I’m looking at you!🤭
If you love a badass female lead, emotional turmoil, dark twists, and a good dose of “he falls first” energy, then read this book immediately.
I finished it feeling both emotionally destroyed and completely satisfied — just how I like it 💅🔥
Thank you so much for the ARC and I cant wait for your future books! Can’t wait to have the real book in my bookshelf ❣️🫶🏻✨
When Darkness Reigns is one of those books that completely consumes you, the kind you start reading for the fantasy and end up staying for the heartbreak, redemption, and slow-burning love story that tears you apart and puts you back together again.
Skyler is the kind of heroine I adore powerful, deeply flawed and fighting internal self doubt. As Queen of Maureia, she’s fierce, but also painfully alone. Her journey through betrayal, self-doubt, and impossible choices felt so raw and real. Watching her try to hold her kingdom together while questioning her own worth had me completely hooked.
And then there’s Demir the enemy! Their connection is intense, complicated, and full of tension in the best possible way. What starts as hate slowly burns into something deeper, and you can feel every ounce of their struggle between loyalty and longing.
It’s not just a romance it’s two broken people learning to see themselves as more than their pasts. This story isn’t just about love; it’s about forgiveness, self-worth, and the courage it takes to let someone in even when it feels impossible. The world building is rich, the emotions are fierce, and the writing is just beautiful, fiery and poetic all at once.
If you love forbidden lovers, and stories where love becomes the light in all the darkness, When Darkness Reigns will stay with you long after the final page.
When Darkness Reigns is a story that dances on the edge of ruin and redemption, in a world where shadows whisper secrets and crowns weigh heavier than steel. Skylar Azdaja , Queen , Warrior and the FMC, isn’t just a queen—she’s a flame in a kingdom of ash, burning bright against betrayal and the creeping chill of dark magic.
What makes this tale irresistible is the bond that should never exist: Skylar and the MMC Demir Vjeran—crown prince, sworn enemy and Skylar's Soul Bonded, are enemies by blood, tethered by fate. Their connection isn’t soft or sweet—it’s sharp, dangerous, and utterly magnetic. Watching them navigate loyalty, desire, and the looming threat of war is like watching two stars collide: beautiful, catastrophic, and impossible to forget. Every page feels like a heartbeat before the storm, and you can’t look away.
Leila Thorne doesn’t just tell stories—she builds empires of emotion and power, then dares you to survive them. Her ability to weave darkness with desire makes this book unforgettable.
If you crave fantasy that blends high stakes with heart, where love is both a weapon and a lifeline, When Darkness Reigns will claim you. It’s a story of fire and shadow, of choices that carve destinies—and it will leave you wondering: when darkness reigns, who dares to shine?
I loved Skylar she was a bada$$ ruthless Queen and didn't care if she had to make people think she was a mean person as long as she could protect her people. She would literally sacrifice her own life if it meant her people could survive.
I also loved that she used her magic to do her hair and make up because girl I would do the same. I didn't like how she treated Viv and Sienna because those girls were her ride and die friends.
Visarous OMG was not expecting that 😱. Felt so bad for Skylar as she had already been through so much.
Loved that Demir who was the son of her enemy (King Sebatian) was her soul bonded mate. I feel like they were perfect for eachother as they were both two broken souls that had been througj some horrible stuff.
I would love a prequel of the characters while they were at the school together as it would be good to get to know them better and see what they went through.
"I choose you. Not this bond, not my soul, but my heart, body and mind. I choose you Skylar. Not the flame. It was never your gifts, never your power, but instead, it was the power that is you. It was your smile, your depth, your generous heart, your pure vulnerability, your fearlessness, your fight and your unyielding strength. It was always you. Just you, princess"
I really enjoyed this story of Skylar Azdaja, Queen of Maureia. This FMC is extremely fierce in her bloodlust but also her determination to help her people and the surrounding Realms.
Skylar privately suffers extreme anxiety and has a hard time in trusting due to her past and those around her. I loved that whilst having to endure these hardships her mindset and determination shine through and she was always able to push forward.
After losing everything from her friends to family at the fault of the Morgadian King. The king who now threatens the entire Realms. The king that Skylar has wished to destroy most of her life. Skylar now has to in plan and put trust in those around her to finally take him down.
Skylar didn't think she could love until she meets Demir, the King of Morgadian's son. They have a history that went back to their Academy years which I really enjoyed the backstory of, especially Demir's feelings of the past.
Im so glad about Visarous (no spoilers)😂 I was hoping from the start. The ending wrapped up pretty quickly, was hoping to see more from it.
Overall I had a great time reading Skylar's story and love me a Bad FMC!
Omg where do I start?! Another fantastic debut novel from another promising indie author! I was honestly enthralled by this story. Skylar our FMC feels so well fleshed out and developed, it’s one of the reasons I really enjoyed it. All of the characters felt so real, they had flaws, they had mistakes they made. It was well written. If you’re a fan of the following this book is absolutely for you: - shadow mummy - well developed characters and world - spice - dark twists you won’t expect - golden retriever MMC vibes - he falls first Read this book!
I would really love to see some stories of the other couples in the book as well, particularly Cain and Jade! I hope they have a story planned! Honestly, I won’t spoiler this book for everyone because it’s one that you can’t put into words and you just have to read it! Characters you will love, characters you will loathe, betrayal, secrets and redemption arcs are all in these pages!
When Darkness Reigns is a really gripping dark paranormal romance that pulled me in pretty quickly. The world is brutal and intense, and I loved how unapologetically dark it is — there’s no softening the power dynamics or the violence, which makes everything feel higher stakes.
The female lead is one of the stronger parts of the book for me. She’s thrown into this dangerous supernatural hierarchy and still manages to hold her own, even when she’s completely outmatched. The enemies-to-lovers tension is done really well, with morally grey characters that you don’t fully trust but can’t stop being drawn to.
The world-building is immersive, the romance is intense and explicit, and by the end it definitely left me wanting to know what happens next. If you like dark fantasy romance with strong tension and high stakes, this one really delivers.
Omg I loved this book! I really enjoyed the badassness of Queen Skylar, I do love a strong FMC, especially when met with growth in her character
This book is filled with betrayal, heartache, anger and defiance, the Queen can't trust anyone and has to show the realms one side of herself to show strength
Prince Demir her greatest enemy also turns out to be her soul bonded, isn't what he seems
Skylar will do whatever it takes to break the bond and oh does she go on a journey, with dark magic and everyone seemingly against her she will sacrifice all to save her people and what will be the remains of everything?
A dedication that says it all: "For the broken but never shattered".
This was a spectacular read, from the moment you turn the first page you are dragged into Queen Skylar's world and war. The ups and downs, the betrayal, the never ending heartache and tragedy she continues to endure. Despite it all she is fierce and strong!
Prince Demir...smug, arrogant and ever so cocky with his smirk! But what's not to love...
I was lost in their world, thier journey and growth! Those last couple of chapters, well my oh my...what a whirl wind of emotion and holding onto my seat, that was!
So thankful to have received this as an ARC 4.5 ⭐️ 🌶️ I’d recommend this book for anyone after a standalone fantasy book with good world building, easy to understand magic/power systems and looking for a book where the FMC is the strong/morally grey main character. Check your triggers.
Jumping in with a long standing feud between the King Sebastian of Morgad and Maureia. Newly ascended Queen Skylar finds herself trying to end a war and avenge those who died at the hands of the King. We learn that Skylar suffers from “The Panic” and starts to reflect on her past and what’s made her the person she is today. Skylar is the definition of “Fuck around and find out”. We watch as she navigates the blurred lines of friendships, loyal council members and betrayal. She’s ready to sacrifice everything so her people can survive the war. Throw in Demir, the Kings son and Skylar really is thrown for a loop, realising that what she perceived to be true, was just her looking through grief and hate filled eyes. Cue slight enemies to lovers because she does in deed stab him, multiple times 😏
I really wish this was longer and more of Skylars past and emotions could have really be explored more. This book had me in all the feels. For a large part of the book Skylar really felt like the villain. She was actually kinda terrifying 😅 I kept waiting to hear about the terrible things the King actually did other than what usually happens on a battlefield which yeah okay be mad but Skylar really seemed to have so much hatred placed on him instead of her own family? Apart from her sister; they didn’t sound like they actually were worth avenging 🤷🏼♀️ I also didn’t like how she treated Viv and Sienna, and she was giving Tyrant vibes for a bit and I’m glad someone questioned the difference between her and the king she claims is so bad. What an emotional rollercoaster from Visarous because well read it and I was hoping for some kind of bitch slap for Lejla but maybe we’ll get another book where she’s put in her place 🤞🏻 I’d also like to point out one of my favourite things is how Skylar uses her magic in her day to day life, like yes super cool she can shapeshift, BUT the fact she uses it to do her hair and make up and change clothing just made me love the realistic use of this magic because tbh I’d be using it like that aswell 👌🏻
My gripe with this novel is that it should have been longer. There were so many aspects I would have loved to know more about but the story was moving along too quickly Leila’s mind is truely an inspiration. Loved this one.
We have a bloodthirsty FMC, plenty of spice, forbidden love and incredible world building that feels unique and makes you want to know more about these people and the place they call home.
I am so looking forward to what comes next from this author and will be stalking her on all the socials so I dont miss out!
LOVED!!! Never before have I read a book where you see the badass FMC battle with her self mentally and I LOVED how this was portrayed and executed! the Queen who would do anything for her people! *CHEFS KISS* The slow burn enemies to lovers and fated mates is also always a winner. Would highly recommend this read!!!
