This book is amazing! It’s also the perfect end to the trilogy. Although Johns kept me waiting until the end to get all the HEAs I was hoping for…and then some. You don’t have to read all the books in the series to enjoy this book but I think you will love and appreciate it so much more if you do.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the author via the publisher.

Through the Valley by Patricia Johns – An Enjoyable, Interesting, and Satisfying Story with Likeable Characters

I enjoy Amish fiction as was excited at the opportunity to read Patricia Johns’ newest novel Through the Valley, the third book in The Amish of Shepherd’s Hill series.

Through the Valley is a story about two Amish women who are not like traditional Amish women. Miri Schrock would rather be out in the field and tending to the cows and the farm rather than be inside cooking, cleaning, and sewing. She doesn’t have farm of her own, but is hopeful she will in the future. For now, she will settle for boarding her three cows at the Yoder farm.

Tabitha Schrock, years ago during her rumspringa, had left the Amish community to become a veterinarian. She ended up marrying an Englisher, Michael. Sadly, their marriage ended in divorce. Tabitha never really felt at home with Englishers so she decided to return to her Amish people. It would take time for her to earn respect and trust from the people in her community. The one barrier she couldn’t break down was being a divorced woman. Despite her longtime friendship with Jonas and a growing love between them, she knew she would never be allowed to remarry as long as her former husband was still alive. She needed to move on with her life and she encouraged Jonas to move on, get married and have a family.

In recent months, Miri has been helping Tom Yoder whose heath continued to decline. She’s the one who has been tending to Tom’s daily needs as his grandsons, Moses and Benuel, are outside taking care of the farm. As his time draws near, while working Miri still continues to chat with Tom and keep him updated on his cows. When Miri lets Tom know that Tabith has arrived to check on some sick cows she is met with silence. Tom Yoder has passed away.

While Tom’s family knew that he was sick, his sudden passing was a surprise. But that surprise would pale in comparison to reading of Tom’s will. The farm had been in the Yoder family for many generations. His grandsons anticipated that one or both of them would inherit the farm. They already had plans on what they would like to do with the property.

Those plans came to a halt upon hearing the reading of Tom’s will. That jolt would be the cause of much rumor and speculation and threatened to divide families and their community. Both Miri and Tabitha’s lives would be shaken up by recent developments in their lives. Would they see the hand of God guiding them through the valley of the shadow of death? Giving them much needed wisdom, guidance, and direction that they needed?

What I love about Patricia Johns’ novels are how the characters are developed and grow through their interactions with one another and the circumstances that going on in their lives. Both Miri and Tabitha wanted to do the right thing in what seemed like impossible situations. I loved the support they had from family and friends, even when challenged to make hard decisions. I appreciate that faith was an important part of the characters’ lives. Patricia does a great job in weaving multiple storylines and characters together. I like how the characters are carried over from early novels in the series. I really enjoyed reading Through the Valley by Patricia Johns.

I would like to thank Patricia Johns and Bethany House Publisher for the opportunity to read Through the Valley by Patricia Johns. I was under no obligation to give a favorable review.

This is a must read for fans of Patricia Johns and her series, The Amish of Shepherd's Hill. This third book in the series has characters that are relatable and a story that is equally relatable. The mix of emotions hits the heart and leaves a lasting impression of finding strength to go on when life gives you twists and turns and unexpected answers to prayers in ways you didn't actually pray for.

Things become complicated in Miri Schrock's Amish community when she is left a farm after caring for old man Tom Yoder. Rumors and innuendos begin to take a toll on the community as to why and how it came to be that she inherited the farm as opposed to one of his grandsons. Moses Yoder had big plans for the land but being blindsided by his grandfather's will thing there is nothing he can do but accept what the will has dictated. As the community put pressure on the bishop and considers splitting up Miri has much to consider. Keep the farm or give it back to the Yoder family.

Tabitha and Jonas have been friends since childhood, but Tabitha leaves the community and marries an English man. Once she discovers he has been cheating on her she divorces him and comes back into the community as their veterinarian knowing that as long as her ex-husband Michael is alive, she could never remarry in the Amish faith. Jonas knows he can't marry Tabitha and finds himself being matched up with another woman by a matchmaker. He finds himself longing for a family and feels the match may be the only answer for a married life.
A lawyer reaches out to Tabitha and lets her know her ex-husband died tragically and his new wife wants to speak with her. Tabitha meets with her and the two discover the unkindness in Michael and how he manipulated those around him. Once Tabitha realizes that with Michael being deceased this makes it possible for her to remarry in the Amish faith, she walks a fine line since Jonas is practically engaged to the matchmaker's choice. Jonas and Tabitha have decisions to make but will they make the one that will lead them to a lifetime of happiness together? Will Miri and Moses find a way to right a situation that brings them both happiness?

I loved this book. It was tender and loving and a wonderful example of how God gives us strength to move forward even when we don't think we can. One of my favorite lines from the book was something Tabitha said to Miri, "She said that sometimes to stay on the narrow path, we have to walk single file."

Faith runs strong throughout the book, and I would gladly give this book ten stars.

Miri is a girl who loves cows and the farming life. Which is unfortunate since her Amish family and community is very Traditional and expect girls to marry young and be homemakers rather than getting involved in the 'outdoor' work. A view which means Miri isn't keen on the idea of being married off since she's much happier outside. All her hopes and dreams look as though they've come true when she very unexpectedly inherits the farm of Old Tom Yoder, for whom she's been caring for months. But Tom's son and grandsons are equally shocked. And angry. And her community and family are also unimpressed by this turn of events. Moses, Tom's grandson, is asked by the Bishop to continue helping on the farm while Miri finds her feet, but he finds himself caught between his angry family and his fledgling attraction to Miri. Miri, however, does not want to be wooed just so the Yoder family can reclaim the farm, push her away from the cows and countryside she loves and shut her into the kitchen.
I enjoyed reading this but I confess that my 'English' (in fact, my ENGLISH English!) viewpoint did make me exceptionally irritated at times! I found Miri's family frustratingly annoying in their reluctance to stand behind Miri in any real way and I was shocked by the realisation of WHY, much later in the book. I felt a bit short-changed by the way Miri's story panned out, although it was very well told, and I liked both Miri and Moses in terms of their characters individual struggles and progression throughout.
At the same time, we're following Tabitha and Jonas, who seem to be playing a dangerous game in terms of their emotions and desires. Tabitha has a broken relationship behind her, but divorce is not recognised in the Amish community to which she has returned. To the members of her community, she is still bound by her marriage vows to the man who betrayed and left her. Furthermore, Jonas is engaged to another...
A well told, easy to read story, which gives lots of opportunity to consider choices, reactions, faith, legacy and how life's path has many bends.

NOTE: I read a pre-publication version supplied by the publisher. No review was required. All comments and opinions above are entirely my own.

The Amish of Shepherd's Hill
My favorite quote is
The dear old man with his passion for his herd, sage advice , and patience for Miri's unique way of seeing the world was gone. Most older folks expected Miri to conform to the Amish ways-to find a husband and devote herself to her home and handcrafts. But not Tom.
I recommend this book.

Through the Valley had me experiencing all the highs and lows right there with Miri and Tabitha. I had to be careful not to bend the cover from the angst I was experiencing.

If you have read the two books (Green Pastures and Still Waters) previously you will remember Tabitha is the local veterinarian who was Amish, went English, and back to Amish when she divorced her English husband. Due to Amish belief she can’t remarry until her ex dies but that doesn’t stop her from developing a friendship with Jonas. It’s all fine and dandy until they both realize they want more. There is a scene in the last part between these two that rivals any other swoony love scene (rated G) in the melting of hearts.

Miri has always been the tomboy and her love for farming is not a normal experience in the Amish world. Women are to work inside the home and do womanly things. Miri can’t cook nor sew and neither does she want to do those things. She wants to be outside working the cattle from sunup to sundown. She is gifted a farm but this gift has torn the community apart. Half of the community thinks she bamboozled an elderly man in his last days. Unfortunately the family of the older man is also torn. All but Moses thinks Miri swindled his grandpa. As Miri and Moses work the farm together feelings develop. Will the farm get in the way of God’s plan for these two?

This book can be read as a standalone but you will get more out of the series reading it in order.

I received a complimentary copy from the author with no requirement to write a positive review. The above review is in my own words.

This is the third book in the series of The Amish of Shepherd's Hill.

Author Patricia Johns brings stories that captivate the readers with characters that we get attached to. She brings the Amish community to us readers with their traditions of Family and their Faith. With a dash of secrets that make any reader of Amish stories get glued to each page as we turn them to read more.

This story is of Miri and Moses. A inheritance of a farm. But it brings conflict and hurt pain when Moses Old Order grandfather passes. But with that he has left everything to Miri.

When the news hits the grapevine, the town is confused and start thinking that Miri forced Moses grandfather to leave her everything, since she was taking care of him.

But little did they both know that sometimes the answers to things come from situations that don't make sense. And in the midst of working together, God's plan starts to come together. And will Moses and Miri find the solution for the inheritance? Will the feelings they are feeling be for the best?

And she also adds a little cute reference to a family member that knits little frogs just like the author does. It was cute to read this in the story line.

Also, Tabitha and Jonas story comes to a conclusion with the most sweetest love storyline. Reminds me of the scene in "It's a Wonderful Life" at the stairs when they are talking to their friend.

You won't want to miss this whole series. Each story is amazing, but all of them together is just wonderful.

I was given an ARC from the author publisher. All stated here are my own. I was not required a positive comment

“Sometimes to stay on the narrow path, we have to walk single file.”
An Amish young lady who inherits a farm – now there is a unique story for you! Just when I think I have read all that Amish fiction can offer, there comes along a book like this, a whole trilogy actually, that offers something fresh and unexpected.
Blending familiar characters with new, the progression is well thought out and easily changes from one plot line to the other. I had a hard time putting it down and finished in just a few days. It might be predictable where Miri and Moses end up, but the journey is exciting and worth taking. God provides a way for them where there seems to be no possible way, and that is equally true for Tabitha. I have enjoyed her growth through the series, and now she finally receives the fulfillment of her hopes and dreams, following a few bumps along the way. If you follow the author on social media, there are also a few fun references to her knitted frogs that are absolutely delightful.
I will miss these characters. They have become real to me, and I am sorry to see the end. If you enjoy Amish fiction with strong Christian messages of relying on God and submitting to his will, even when it is hard, I highly recommend a visit to Shepherd’s Hill. Patricia Johns has secured her place as a top author in this genre, and here is where her talent truly shines.

Through the valley by Patricia Johns

Although I have read many of Patricia Johns books, this one is really special. If I had to pick a favorite, I’d probably say this one is it, but I usually feel that way about whatever book I’m reading of hers at the time. Through the Valley is the third book in Patricia Johns, The Amish of Shepard’s Hill series

The setting for the story is Shepherd Hill, a peaceful Amish settlement. where friends and neighbors support and help one another. Boy did Old Tom Yoder create a stir when he left his farm to his caregiver, Miri bypassing his grandsons and other family members.

I really enjoyed getting to know Miri, Moses, Jonas, & Tabitha in a personal way. They become very realistic as you read through this storyline. You are made aware that every decision in life is important and can affect not only you, but others also. None of these characters skated through life without turmoil.

I cannot believe all the emotions that come out as you read this story. You will be happy, sad, and thoroughly drawn into the story with every emotion imaginable.

This is definitely a five star book and I highly recommend any lover of Amish fiction to read this one. Although you could read this book as a standalone, I highly suggest you read the two preceding books in this series.

Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to give a positive review.

Do yourself a favor and backtrack a bit before reading this book. You can certainly read it as a standalone, but if you read the other books first, you'll be even more excited for this one! I know I was!

When Miri inherits the estate of a late friend, it seems like an answer to her prayers. But the pushback from his family, and even the Amish community, has her walking on eggshells around everyone... her own family included. She finds solace and peace in Moses, something she never expected... but is he truly there to support her, or is he trying to find another way to get the farm?

Tabitha is still finding her way in the community. She desires to be content with her life as it is, a life that won't allow her to remarry. But the desire of her heart, or should I say the man of her heart, is never too far from her thoughts. Will God make a way for Tabitha to find her happily ever after, or will she settle for a life unmarried?

I loved this! I wanted to slow down and savor it, but I was so immersed in the story that I finished it all in one day! I can't say too much about this story because I don't want to give away any spoilers, but my romance readers... you are in for a treat! Get ready for some swoony, sweet moments, along with some unexpected highs and lows for these characters.

I loved this series. LOVED IT! I am so ready to find out what's next for Patricia.

I gave this 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.

The end of Patricia Johns trilogy held up well.
Miri Schrock, yes, she's a cousin of Tabitha, Amanda, and Rose, helped Old Tom, her neighbor and good friend. Miri loves cattle and he has a herd. He was teaching her everything about them, since she was young, now as his health is failing, he has her help him in his house with some cooking and cleaning.
Moses, his grandson, has helped his grandfather and was told he or his brother would inherit the farm. When Old Tom dies and his will is read, everyone is in utter shock over it. Miri inherits the whole farm, house, and cattle included. How could he have been of sound mind when he rewrote the will to exclude his own grandsons for a neighbor, sure Moses grew up hanging out with Miri, but the farm has been in the family for 6 generations. They are now at odds over the farm.
At the same time. Another shocking death occurs, that rocks the community. Everyone is stunned. What will they do?
To find out who is very shocking death is, and what happens to the community because of both of these deaths grab a copy. And just be prepared to stay up all night because this book is hard to put down. Patricia will have you all over the place trying to piece it together and it isn't even a mystery story. You just try to figure out the who, what, where, when, why, and how the events happen and the characters reactions. Well at least when you are as invested in these characters as I have been throughout this series.

Through the Valley by Patricia Johns is book 3 in The Amish of Shepherds Hill Series and I really loved this story as well as the whole series, although I’m sad to see this series come to an end as the storyline as well as the characters have become some of my favorites.
In this story we see that sometimes the dreams we have are so crystal clear to us but they are anything but to those we love the most. When an amazing gift comes to Miri she just knows this is the dream that will pave the road to her future and she will have everything she has ever wanted or will she? Moses has his own dreams and when those dreams turn on a dime he is left wondering why and how he can ever survive this latest blow, can these two young people see the light through the valley or will they be lost within the shadows.
We also get to see how after years of walking a path Tabitha thought she wanted she is now finding her true path was always within her community with the traditions handed down for generation, however can she have the family she desires and hold onto the one thing she holds dear?
This book has it all, community, friends, family and faith, most of all it will show you that although the road through the valley is bumpy at times it will prove to be just the road we are meant to travel holding true to our faith. These opinions are my own and I really hope you pick not only this book up but the whole series. Happy Reading

Patricia Johns wowed me with the conclusion to The Amish of Shepherd’s Hill series. This is Miri and Moses tale but it was marvelous to catch up with earlier characters in this series especially Tabitha, the Amish vet in Shepherd Hill.

Miri is not your typical Amish young lady. She enjoyed working with cattle and on the farm more than doing domestic skills. She was shocked with her inheritance from Old Tom Yoder; however it caused a lot of stress with the family members reaction and what the community threaten to do. Moses was commissioned by the bishop to assistant Miri after his grandfather’s death, but Miri was leery of his true motive.

This is a roller coaster read not only for Miri and Moses, but also Tabitha and Jonas along with residents in the community. However, they discovered that when walking through the valley God is there with forgiveness, renewed faith, new beginnings and everything working out according to God’s direction and will.

I received an advance copy of this book from Bethany House as a member of the launch team. I was not expected to write a positive review, but have expressed my own thoughts.

I’m sad to see this series end. The characters and happenings will stay with me and what truly the verses in Psalms 23 can bring into lives when their trust is in God.

I'm sad to see this series come to an end. Miri loves everything about farm life, well, except for doing anything in the house. She was blessed to receive a farm left to her by a neighbor who had promised it to his grandsons. Of course, the Amish community does not like it one bit and it leaves Miri and her family standing alone. Moses is one of the grandsons and grew up with Miri. The bishop asks him to help Miri settle in on the farm. In doing so he learns that her heart is pure and she loves the farm as much as his grandfather did. Unfortunately, the community does not believe it. In the end, Miri decides to give into the community but Moses has other ideas that are born out of love for her.

Miri's cousin Tabitha who returned to the Amish as an animal vet and after getting divorced makes her totally untouchable to any Amish man. Her best friend Jonas and her have very strong feelings for each other but unless her ex-husband passes away they are not allowed to act on their feelings. We have followed Tabitha and Jonas thru all 3 books and their story brings disappointment to those that have read the 1st 2 books.

Can Miri and Tabitha ever find the true happiness that they seek, doing what their hearts want them to do for their livelihood?

I was given an ARC from the author and this is my honest review of a great book!

Through the Valley is the third book in The Amish of Shepherd's Hill series by Patgricia Johns. This wonderfully written series follows the characters through the books, so it is best to read them in order. The author does a nice job of filling in background information, so this is also a nice standalone story. This story focuses on Miri and Moses. Miri cares for an elderly man and following his death receives his farm. Mose and his brother had helped their grandfather on the farm and had been told the farm would be theirs. One of the church leaders instructs Moses to help Miri for a month to get the feel of running the farm.

This story is so good! I especially enjoyed reading of how well Miri and Moses work together, especially with the sick cows. This story is realistic in how Moses's family feels about the situation and how the member of the community responds to it. I enjoyed the mystery behind why the man left the farm to Miri. I also enjoyed the parts of the story of Tabitha and Jonas as they work through their feelings following the death of her husband. This is a wonderful story of faith, friendship, family and doing what is best for all.

THROUGH THE VALLEY by Patricia Johns is a beautiful and heartfelt conclusion to The Amish of Shepherd's Hill series - a series that has truly become near and dear to my heart. Each book has given us more of the town and its people and this final chapter ties everything together in the most touching way.

Miri and Moses's story was sweet and endearing. Their journey of faith, family and love unfolded in the most unlikely of circumstances, reminding us of the quiet strength found in forgiveness and trust. The inheritance twist added just the right amount of tension, making their growing bond even more special.

And then there's Tabitha and Jonas, seeing them finally get their long awaited happily ever after absolutely made my heart soar. From the very first book, their story captured my attention and this ending was everything I hoped for and more.

This book and the whole series, reminded me why I love Amish fiction so much. Warm, emotional, and full of heart. A wonderful finale to a truly special series. I’m giving THROUGH THE VALLEY the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy!

I was sad to see this book end. It definitely went out with a bang!
Oh my the author really outdid herself on this one.
Lots happening in this story that I couldn't turn the pages fast enough!
I was angry at the community for what went on. It wasn't fair or right!! My heart went out to Miri. I found myself rooting for her and for Moses who was also caught in the middle.
This book will make you laugh, crying and want to scream at them along the way. I kept shaking my head at some people too. Ugh.
Forgiveness is the main theme. Forgiveness, forgiveness, forgiveness is what the Bishop said. Harder to do that sometimes isn't it?
By the time this story ending I was crying tears of happiness and that's all I'll say.
This story will leave you feeling full and satisfied!
5 stars for a job well done!!! I love loved this sweet and wonderful love story
I highly recommend it!

Some stories just meet you at the right time, and Through the Valley by Patricia Johns was one of those for me.

This was such a heartfelt story about faith, love, loss, and those seasons of life when you’re just trying to find your way through. I loved the reminder that even in the hardest valleys, God is still there. Sometimes we don’t understand why we’re walking through certain things, but there can still be growth, healing, and hope along the way.

With this book, you get two beautiful stories in one: the romance between Miri and Moses and the romance between Tabitha and Jonas. Both are incredibly sweet and genuinely touched my heart. These characters felt real, the emotions felt genuine, and there were definitely moments that made me stop and think. It’s the kind of story that stays with you a little after you finish it.

Even though this is part of a series, the book works perfectly well as a standalone. You can easily jump in and enjoy the story without having read the previous books.

If you enjoy Christian fiction with faith, heart, and a good dose of emotion, I definitely recommend adding this one to your TBR. 🤍

I have been looking forward to this book, and it sure did not disappoint.
I loved being back with Tabitha, the Amish vet, and Jonas, but this relationship can go nowhere, because of her divorce. As this book starts Jonas has gone looking for a bride, no!
There is a big theme of forgiveness here, both for Tabitha and the Yoder's, but can they?
This is also Mimi's and Moses story, with Mimi wanting to be out doing men's work, and not being a typical Amish woman, and yes, Mimi and Tabitha are related!
This story has so many twists and turns, and just when you think questions are answered, no, and we are in for big surprises.
I loved the epilogue, only thing wrong was I hate for this series to end!

I was literally holding my breathe while I was reading this!!! If I could give this book more than five stars I would.
This is the final book in The Amish of Shepherd Hill series. There are really two storylines. The first is about Miri. She inherits a farm when Old Tom, the man she helps, passes away. But that means Old Tom’s family gets nothing.
Tabitha Schrock, the local veterinarian is back. I don’t want give away too much, but Tabitha was divorced in the English world, so she can never remarry while her husband is alive.
I was SO invested in this story and author Patricia Johns had me guessing until the end. You definitely need to read these books in order. But trust me- you will love the whole series!

Miri doesn't fit in as the typical Amish woman. Moses just wants to farm his grandfather’s farm. Which Miri inherited. Did she scheme to get it? Or is she innocent?

Tabitha doesn’t fit in either as a divorced Amish veterinarian. Until she’s not divorced and is widowed. Sort of. Jonas has moved on as she told him to. What a mix up.

I really liked the various storylines. I appreciated the closure we received with Tabitha and Jonas. But did they receive their happily ever after? And Miri and Moses. The surprise inheritance brought a nice tension, although I did hurt for both of them. Can love prevail at all?

An honest look at how we can get wound up in material things, this story kept me reading late into the night. I highly recommend it!

How can I best describe this book? Heartwarming? Inspiring? Yes, to both, but most of all, Through the Valley is captivating! I absolutely loved the return to Shepherd's Hill, a reunion with the Schrock sisters, and the realistic emotions in this series' conclusion.

I've enjoyed all three books in the Amish of Shepherd's Hill series, but I can't say enough good things about Through the Valley! Satisfying romance, Amish values, and a powerful reminder to trust in God's Plan made this a must-read for me. Well done, Patricia Johns!

I received a copy from the author and Bethany House. There was no obligation for a positive review.

I truly enjoyed this beautifully written book by Patricia Johns. I loved getting to know Miri, Moses, Jonas, & Tabitha. I loved that this third and final book in this series gets Tabitha finding her happy ending. This story centers around those 4 characters, but you get a lot of interaction with previous characters in the other two books. You can still read the story without reading the previous books, but I think you’ll want to read them if you haven’t. I had all the feels. I cried. I laughed. I got angry. It takes you through all the emotions, but the epilogue will leave your heart happy.

This is a really good read with so many wonderful characters. This is book number three and brings this series to an end. I'm sad to see it go but the author ties up any loose ends in a beautiful way. When a families inheritance goes to an outsider, it causes a split in the community. But as time goes on, God turns it around and turns it into something good. This story is about faith, family, love, forgiveness and second chances. I enjoyed this series so much. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed are my own. #throughthevalley #BHPFiction

This is the third book in The Shepherd's Hill Series. It was so good! I found myself not wanting to put it down, because I was always wanting to know what happened next. This one was my favorite even though the other two books in the series were really good as well. I highly recommend reading it, you won't regret it!!!

Perfect story ending

Oh how I have enjoyed this series of books. The Amish life is unique and can have challenges.
The characters in this series face many of them.
You can't help but keep turning pages to see how God will work things out for them.
Loved the aunt who knits frogs.....lol thanks

Being the third book in this series was a wonderfully well written story that brought all the books to a wonderful close. The characters and storyline are outstanding while enjoying the faith based and family oriented. What could be any better. Thank you Patricia Johns for another great book!!!!
