Maddox Kamado has it all as the star shooting guard for the San Francisco Dragons—fame, fortune, and screaming fans. But no amount of glory can replace the love he let slip away.
Annalise Monroe once dreamed of designing gowns that would grace runways. Instead, her sketches are collecting dust while she’s stuck working for the boss from hell, all while trying to forget the one who shattered her heart.
When fate brings them together again, it’s clear the years have changed them. But the fire between them remains—a smoldering ember just waiting to ignite.
Annalise swears she won’t fall for him again. Maddox swears he won’t lose her this time. But with every stolen glance, every brush of their hands, and every memory that refuses to fade, the pull between them only grows stronger.
There’s too much history. Too much longing. And now that they’re forced together, he’s willing to do everything in his power to win her back.

When she's not writing, you'll find her curled up on the couch cuddling with her dog while reading a good book, indulging in new foods, and traveling to new destinations to create memories with her husband and their two kids.
Game Changer by Cindy Ta was such a pleasant surprise and a really strong debut. I haven’t read many basketball romances, but this one absolutely hit the spot and made me want to pick up more in the genre.
Both the MMC and FMC were easy to love and even easier to root for. Their connection felt genuine, and I really enjoyed watching them find their way back to each other. The second-chance romance was done well, with enough history and emotion to make their reunion feel earned. I also loved the close-knit family dynamics and how supportive the MMC was, which added so much heart to the story.
The pacing kept me engaged, and there was a twist I genuinely didn’t see coming, which is always a win for me. While there were a few moments that felt slightly rushed or could have been explored a bit more deeply, it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment.
If you’re looking for a basketball romance with strong characters, family vibes, a supportive MMC, and a second-chance love story with a little surprise along the way, this one is definitely worth picking up.
ARC Review ✨ First I would like to say a big thank you to Cindy for letting me be apart of this ARC Team! Rate: 5/5⭐️ Spice: 2/5🌶️
What to expect when reading Game Changer; -Second Chance -Forced Proximity -Sports Romance -First Love -Flashbacks
This is book one of the Falling in Frisco series! You get to follow Annalise and Maddox! Annalise had a dream she’s let sit doormat while Maddox is living his dream. The last thing these thought would happen is crossing paths. Could this be their second chance? This is the first book I’ve read by Cindy and honestly I can’t wait to read more of her books. The story was so entertaining from beginning to end. There was funny moments, the flashbacks were perfect, and the spicy scenes were hot. Also, this plot twist blew my mind and was totally not expecting that at all but wow, completely here for that. I enjoyed their growth chemistry throughout this book. It was so perfect and the epilogue was the perfect close out. I could honestly read more about Annalise and Maddox because they really are the cutest 🙌

-Second Chance -Forced Proximity -Sports Romance -First Love
This is book one in the Falling in Frisco series. Their story was one of second chances at love, but it also involved them working through issues from their past. Their love is not perfect, and it has its share with challenges and difficulties. Maddox is a top player for the San Francisco Dragons, and Annalise is an aspiring fashion designer. The story was extremely interesting from start to finish. There were humorous moments, beautiful flashbacks, and spicy scenes. Throughout the book, I appreciated their growing chemistry. I am excited to see what happens next in this series!
Tropes: Second Chance Romance Workplace romance Forced proximity Mutual pining It's always been you He takes care of her Multicultural Dual POV
So this was an OK book for me. I had some issues with this but it mostly boiled down to writing style.
Things I liked: •The multicultural representation. Honestly this was the biggest reason I was drawn to this book and I really enjoyed the snippets of cultural representation from both MCs. •The side characters and family dynamics. Maddox had a pretty solid relationship with his teammates and every time they were together it was fun. •The spice. I'm not gonna sugar coat it but the spice was hot. More comments on it below but overall the scenes were good.
So now what didn't work for me. As a debut book it's not bad but definitely not great. I was left wanting something more substantial. The fast pace did not work to help me get to know these characters well enough to care about their journey. Dialogue and inner thoughts were staccato and jumpy. The flow felt unnatural and therefore fake. Also, even though I LOVE a good spicy book, the pace made a few scenes feel completely unnecessary. The spice was hot but this needed more pining and build up. I needed a slow down button to really get to know these characters and feel that connection. Because no matter how much they claimed they were soulmates it just wasn't clicking for me. It was borderline soap opera dramatics... and that kind of dynamic is cringe to me.
I know others will enjoy what I didn't... and that's cool. I was expecting something from this story and just didn't get it. I would recommend this to only a select few. I am curious to see how this author grows because I did like some things in this story...so I might pick up her next book.
Thank you to the author for giving me an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own and offered voluntarily.
I always wanted to read the Episode version, but never got around to it. However, it meant I was reading this story with fresh eyes.
Annalise was…difficult sometimes. Her stubbornness and insistence that Maddox cheated on her got annoying after a while, but I suppose it was a realistic reaction, and I understood why she reacted that way. And I know she was confused about Maddox, but it hurt to see her giving mixed signals in the first half. Still, I couldn’t hate her, not that I tried to really. She was relatable in some ways, particularly because I know what self-doubt is like. She had her moments, but I loved seeing her character develop.
I knew long before reading that I would adore Maddox. He was cocky without being obnoxious, and very determined. He had a possessive side when it came to Annalise, even though they’d broken up, but that played into how confident and driven he was to get her back. Finally, he encouraged her to not give up on her dreams. I couldn’t help but feel jealous of Annalise for having a guy like Maddox be down bad for her.
Regardless of where they were at in any given moment, the chemistry between Annalise and Maddox was most definitely there, and I rooted for them from start to finish. The writing contained no shortage of drama, humor, heartfelt moments, and emotional ones. I’m excited to see who gets a book next in this series. I’ve come to enjoy all the characters. Okay, almost all of them (minus Veronica and Lucas).
TW: mentions of infidelity, cancer, attempted murder, death of a loved one
Thank you to Cindy Ta to read the ARC of Game Changer! This book is set to release on January 13th, 2026.
Blurb: The story follows high school sweethearts, Maddox Kamado and Annalise Monroe. After a breakup that left them both heartbroken, fate has brought them back together. However, with all their history, is it enough to give them a shot again? Especially now that Maddox is the star shooting guard for the San Francisco Dragons.
Thoughts: Is it crazy that this book kind of reminded me of Ana Huang’s writing? This might be why I enjoyed it so much. Let’s get one thing straight though. Cindy Ta? She can write about a yearning man 🤏🏼🤏🏼🤏🏼 I ate Maddox Kamado’s character all the way up. Maddox was giving HEAVY Nathan Scott energy and I was HERE for it.
I wish I could say Annalise gave off Haley energy, but she gave off more Brooke energy, but that’s okay bc we LOVE Brooke Davis. As much as I wanted to yell at Annalise, I couldn’t be mad bc as a woman, I can understand where she’s coming from.
The plot of this book? Towards the middle, I was starting to question how there could still be 50% left to the book, but that twist???? I lowkey saw it coming, HOWEVER, I didn’t think anything would get THAT extreme.
Anyways, this book was a GREAT time. Smutty, funny, a little thrill and a little cringey (in a fun way). A page turner forsure.
What to expect: 🏀 Sports Romance 🪡Fashion Designer FMC x Basketball Player MMC 🏀 BIPOC rep 🪡 Workplace Romance 🏀 YEARNING 🪡 Open door spice 🏀 Second Chance 🪡 “It’s Always Been You” 🏀 Fun Banter 🪡 Forced Proximity
Game Changer is a second-chance love story about Annalise and Maddox, high school sweethearts torn apart by a tragic lie that kept them separated for four long years. Though distance and heartbreak forced them onto different paths, the love they once shared never truly faded, it simply buried itself deep within their hearts. Annalise abandoned her dreams of fashion in New York to return home and care for her family when her beloved Abuelo fell ill. Now working under a ruthless boss known as La Diabla, she’s placed her aspirations of becoming a fashion designer and launching her own clothing line on hold. That is, until fate brings her face-to-face with the one man her heart never learned to forget. Maddox fits the mold of the cocky, playboy athlete, but beneath the surface, he’s never stopped loving Annalise. When their paths cross again, he’s convinced its destiny and this time, he refuses to let her slip away without a fight. As old wounds resurface and long-buried truths come to light, Annalise and Maddox must confront the heartbreak of their pasts and decide if love is worth the risk of being broken again. Finding their way back to each other may be the ultimate game changer.
This book ended up being such a fun surprise for me. It took a while for it to fully pull me in but once it did, I was invested. The story flows easily and the strength of the plot kept me turning the pages.
One of my favorite parts of this book was Maddox's dynamic with his friends and family. His friend group felt incredibly tight knit and genuine, and getting to see that side of his life added so much to his character. Maddox truly came across as a reformed playboy. I kept expecting him to slip up, but reading from his POV showed just how kind, thoughtful, and committed he really was. His determination not to let go of Annalise paired with the full background of their relationship made it easy to connect with both of them.
Watching Annalise find herself and pursue her dreams was really satisfying and the themes of second chances and forgiveness were explored in a way that felt authentic. I especially loved the ending. It brought everything together and was such an entertaining finish.
What made this book stand out for me was how different it felt from my usual reads. The representation of the characters and cultures added a refreshing layer and the plot stayed engaging while keeping everything connected. I was also surprised to find out that this was originally an Episode story.
I also really enjoyed the playlist. It added to the reading experience and helped set the overall vibe of the story.
A second chance romance that adds spice to your life is one of the many ways to describe Game Changer.
Annalise and Maddox used to date in high school but they end up going their separate ways: Maddox to pursue the NBA and Annalise to pursue Fashion school. With any second chance romance, they have the meeting where they both are surprised to see one another (and at the hands of La Diabla-BOO!) The book had delicious tension and spice. Maddox is the epitome of possessive MMC who only has eyes for Annalise.
I truly enjoyed this debut release by Cindy. From the care she took to designing the header sections, to writing Maddox’s and Annalise’s emotions and insecurities that came across clearly to the reader. The friend group was immaculate (something I’m always a sucker for) and then of course the cutest little puppy ever, Tsuki!
I highly recommend this book if you want a sports romance that has beautiful familial relationships on both sides, a friend group that shines through, and romance that blossoms/grows as the book progresses.
Thank you so much Cindy for the ARC of your debut novel!
15% in and I physically cannot continue because the cringe is unbearable. I dropped this the moment she drunk-called him and he just casually took her home from the bar. The secondhand embarrassment was real.
And don’t even get me started on how she was instantly affected the moment she saw him—like girl, you’re barely holding onto your job, your boss doesn’t even remember your name, and you’re out here reacting like this? It was so cringey and unprofessional she realistically should’ve been fired on the spot, and the only reason she wasn’t is pure plot armor (thanks, Kamado lol).
Speaking of Kamado—him “fucking around” while it’s painfully obvious he still has feelings isn’t sexy or complex, it’s just messy and immature. I get the whole “distraction” angle, but if you’re still emotionally attached, sleeping around doesn’t make you deep—it makes you avoidant. I get the whole fuck boy vibes—trust me, I read a lot of those.
I have high expectations for this, but I’m sorry it’s instant DNF for me.
My man said nahh you know you want me. I know I want ya. And some side characters that I’m already in love with too. And one that I need to give a big hug to.
They both were vibe and loved that! Healing isn’t always smooth and is messy asf most of the time. There is no right or wrong way to grieve or to go through a breakup or heartbreak. It’s messy and I liked that it was messy at times. It wasn’t the same oh, they sleep around with someone and they get over it you know. Also being able to actually let go of that and talk things out with someone instead of continuously, shoving those feelings down.
Now he is cocky, but it’s not obnoxious or annoying. It’s just a very confident, but not loud in your face type of cocky. It’s a smooth. He knows exactly what you want before you even know it and he takes care of her even when she doesn’t think she needs it.
Game Changer; Falling In Frisco Series Book # 1 ) Maddox and Annalise - OMG !!! The way these two hooked me so completely , the the way their story pulled at all my heartstrings and had me laughing out loud , smiling like crazy even sobbing like a baby , yelling outta pure frustration and kept me cheering so freaking hard . Well I honestly do not think there really are any perfect words to express how in love with this story I fell!! I absolutely adored both Annalise and Maddox so so much . I loved the progression of their relationship, the fact that they had history together- that they used to date back in high school until circumstances tore them apart . This was just such a beautiful journey about love and heartbreak and second chances !! I was so there for it all and cannot recommend it highly enough
I can't get over how much I love Maddox and Annalise. Their story was one of second chance love, but one that builds on them working through the issues of their past. Their love isn't a perfect one, and comes with a variety of challenges and hardships. Maddox is a star champion of the San Francisco Dragons, and Annalise is an up and coming fashion designer.
He comes back into her life after a chance business opportunity brings them together again, and is determined to not lose her a second time. I was cheering them on, tearing up over their tough times, and celebrating their wins as they rediscovered what their love looks like. This isn't your average Sports Romance! Cindy does a beautiful job of bringing them back together, and sending us on a roller coaster of emotions to see how their love grows. This debut of a story is one for your bookshelf!
I did not think I would enjoy a sports romance story ! Maddox & Annalise relationship is like what any girl with a high school sweetheart would want. It was so romantic and steamy 🤭 to read.
I personally relate to Annalise because I’m also into fashion and have my own brand/business. So her inner thoughts about herself and being unsure was so relatable. Maddox sounds smoking hot and is such a lover boy!
I love the involvement of the side characters and how everyone was written. I personally would love some spin offs from some of the side characters.
I felt this book wasn’t TOO sports heavy but it had the type of drama that a famous person would in counter but with a slight twist ! I truly enjoyed this book and so happy I got to read it !
ARC review - thank you to Cindy for the advanced copy!
This was actually such an interesting sports romance as it wasn't as traditional as other ones I read, featuring different tropes that I never expected to work together, yet they meshed together just fine. It was extremely diverse for one, with just such a well-represented cast of characters from all backgrounds, and honestly, it was just neat to see the representation! It was spicy, as expected, with a few open-door moments, but it was also honestly full of yearning and sweetness (a great mix, if any). Plus, there are some plot twists that I really thought made the story a lot more entertaining. Overall, a solid read and such a fun debut!
I absolutely adored this book! Annaliese and Maddox were the absolute cutest couple. I loved that they encouraged each other and pushed forward together to accomplish their goals and dreams. Annaliese at times was a bit difficult at times to get through due to believing that Maddox had cheated on her but even then I loved watching her give Maddox hell lol.
Speaking of Maddox, I absolutely loved him. He was a man down bad and I ate it up!! I loved his perseverance and persistence when it came to Annaliese. He truly loved her and the yearning was top tier!! I'm really excited to see how the rest of the series goes but this was a great debut book!!
I read this book as an ARC. I really loved the story of Maddox and Annalise. Their trials made them who they are. Maddox is a NBA superstar, Annalise wants to follow her dreams of being a fashion designer. But she’s working for a mean boss at a fashion company. Four years ago, someone came between the couple ending their high school love. They meet again at Annalise’s work. Will the truth come out to what really happened? Will the one person trying to come between them succeed? Read Game Changer to see if they get their happily ever after. There is some spice. Check your trigger warnings, it’s not a dark romance. But it does hit on some topics that may be close to you.
I freaking loved this book! Game Changer follows the story of Maddox + Annalise. Game Changer is layered with culture, character arc & depth of character. Not to mention I love a second chance romance!
Maddox is down bad for Annalise after he sees her after their breakup. Annalise is working for the company that Maddox is collab'ing with.. & one thing leads to another..
For this being the first book in the Falling in Frisco series I can only imagine who is going to be next in Cindy Ta's universe.
Thank you so much to the author for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
I wasn’t sure how I would feel going into this book, as Basketball is not one of my favorites for Sports tropes, but it hit in all the right places. You have a strong, independent female and an MMC who would do anything for his girl. Although history split them apart, it couldn’t keep them apart. I also enjoyed the little turn of suspense for the last little bit of the storyline – it was a little predictable on the “who-done-it” but not the “HOW-done-it”. Great job, Cindy Ta, and I look forward to reading more from you. I received a review copy for free, and I am leaving this review honestly and voluntarily.
First, thank you to NetGalley and Cindy for the opportunity to preview this work. Secondly, this was such a solid read for a debut novel. I enjoyed both MCs and kudos for the multicultural representation. This is the first of the Falling in Frisco series. Maddox and Annalise are old loves reunited once again. Annalise vows to never give him her heart again and Maddox vows to never let her go again. Now this is how you do a second chance romance - enough history to make their reconnect seem authentic. These 2 were easy to love and root for. This story was paced well for the most part and the spice was done in a way it didn’t feel rushed or unnecessary to the story. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
What a great way to start off 2026! This is for everyone who loves nostalgic vibes like One Tree Hill- with spice! I absolutely devoured this book!
🏀 Maddox and Annalise are reunited with an awkward encounter after breaking up four years ago. Can they move past their previous dating experience to work other professionally? Why is Annalise his “Game Changer”. This book had everything you can want in a sports romance, drama, betrayals, flashbacks to uncover what happened, family drama and maybe reconciliation?? Read to find out if Maddox and Annalise can find their path back together! 🫶🏻
❤️Second Chance Romance ❤️He Falls First and Harder
This was such a cute love story, High School sweethearts with a 4 year break up.
The flashback scenes really helped build up both sides of their stories. I was crying and screaming, I loved how Annalise made him work for her trust again, yet Maddox was just doing everything anyway. He loved with his whole heart.
I really enjoyed Maddox being absolutely OBSESSED with Annalise throughout this book.
The little plot twist I did not see coming had me gasping. I thought I knew what would happen and boy was I WRONG.
Game changer is a second chance romance following Annalise and Maddox. Maddox is an MBA player who is starting his own fashion line and runs into his ex Annalise, who is an assistant at a fashion company. The fight their attraction for one another but eventually give in to the pull and rekindle what was once lost.
This was a warming and easy read with a bit of spice, a MMC that will stop at nothing to win her back with just a spot of drama. I enjoyed the character growth with seen in FMC character but at times her knee jerk reactions were a bit frustrating. The HEA was perfect.
Maddox was just the biggest green flag cinnamon roll who only ever loved Annalise. Annalise was a character I rooted for the whole time but she definitely was stubborn, which is relatable. They truly loved each other and what they went through would have been so scary. Definitely would read books about some of the other supporting characters too! Rooting for Santiago and Serena!!
Love love love! I love a second chance romance and unfortunately this one includes a miscommunication troupe. The way these two love each other and support each others’ ambitions fully is inspiring. I also loooove a found family group of friends, so I’m looking forward to the other stories connected to this one!
This book was so cute. I love how they were high school sweethearts and a clothing design collaboration brought them back together. Loved Mazi attitude towards Maddox from a best friends side of things love how she will forever have Annalise’s back no matter what. I’m glad she finally found out the truth. Loved how this ended.
