I'm going to be semi-controversial and say that if, after pushing away the person you really like coldly twice and regretting it, you refuse to learn and do it a third time, you two probably should not be together until you grow a lot more SEPARATELY.

The one non-negotiable in romances for me (aside from the obvious: consent) is that I should want the characters to get together. This doesn't even mean they should be likable, just that they are interesting people and I can get behind their growth/struggle and see how they are good for each other and bring out good things in each other. In this case, I really don't so big meh for me.

I really enjoyed the story. I liked that we knew both main character’s backstories for how they became who they are and why they can act a certain way at times. They’re complicated characters and bring their emotional baggage into a relationship, I really appreciate when romances are not written through rose tinted glasses.

Denise and Maddox had very good chemistry. Maddox was such a sweetheart and hardworking, Denise was creative, talented and had huge growth outside of the storyline. I love seeing characters that have overcome difficult situations. I also liked that Denise was able to recognize that she came from privilege and that her jumpstart in life came from that, but that she has also worked to not just be a nepo baby. The inclusion of not necessarily having to go to college to be successful in life felt important too.

We all need friends like Bobbette, Oliver, Fiona, Trace and Solange. Once again, I’m a sucker for grandmas, they have my entire heart. Gram was adorable and a wonderful support system for Maddox.

Thank you to Robin Clairvaux for providing me with an eARC.

Through the clouds

Both main characters came from different backgrounds and troubles. They had got a glimpse at each other once in the past. Yet, when they got to know each other, they found what they hadn’t known they needed.

Denise Farrington is the only child of Farrington Parks owner Burt Farrington. She has been working for the company after her toxic marriage with Carl ended, leaving her with serious psychological problems, most of which she hid well. The company is intent on buying Middle Waters Resort, to extend their empire into the neighbouring state.
Maddox is manager and jack of all trades at Middle Waters Resort when Denise arrives to discuss the buyout with Oliver, the owner. However, meeting Maddox is like a slap to Denise, bringing back memories long buried of a time she was a completely different person. Maddox doesn’t recognise Denise however, until she is gently reminded.
This is a good romance, well written, with several very complicated backstories for both Denise and Maddox, and jointly. Because of her position in Farrington Parks, Denise isn’t sure if she wants to pursue a relationship with Maddox, and keeps going hot and cold, first to protect herself and the company, later to protect them. Maddox feels as though they aren’t good enough for Denise, and once Denise’s cousin Darby gets involved in the situation, and gets her claws into poor Maddox, that really knocks them back, Maddox being told by Darby that they are insignificant, the ‘help’.
Eventually Darby goes too far, because of her perceived view of Denise, and her competitiveness at work, and that’s when Denise’s friends all rally round to help.
I enjoyed reading this story. I really liked Denise and Maddox’s ‘getting to know you’ phases, which happened relatively slowly. But after Darby’s interference, everything changed, the story became very fast, and the ending came around faster than I expected. Shame - that was a bit of a let down.

Lovely story with lots of representation such as non-binary mc, anxiety and mental health…and more!

I loved Maddox! So sweet, their depth and character are warm and welcoming and they have so much strength and bravery and love.

Denise had a beautiful arc. She was very hot and cold and at times it was a bit annoying (in a good storytelling way!) and I enjoyed the conversations and changes and confidence throughout.

The story was well paced. The steam was a steaming and flowed well with the story and timeline. ;).

Thank you to author Robin Clairvaux for this ARC! I am very happy to leave my honest review.

In Moments Like This was a wonderfully entertaining and satisfying sapphic romance that I truly enjoyed reading. I found this to be a really rich and layered story with interesting and loveable characters. I found the cover to be lovely and it caught my eye with bright and fun cover art. I’ve never read anything that was set against the backdrop of an amusement park and found this aspect to be quite whimsical and fun.

We follow Denise, a strong and capable business woman who has spent much of her life working for her father. Her father owns a chain of amusement parks and she has grown to play a critical role in this business. She has a strong sense of loyalty even at the expense of her own happiness. In a very real sense, she feels trapped in the family business and can’t break free. I had a great deal of admiration and respect for Denise almost immediately. I too understand what it feels like to be forced into a box of familial loyalty at my own expense…it sucks. While working on the rehabilitation of an amusement park, one she hopes will be her final project, she meets Maddox and the once intensely guarded and emotionally repressed Denise begins to thaw. Swoon! Maddox is deeply rooted into their community and is a deep and remarkable person. They care for their aging grandmother and approach life with kindness and sincerity. They are wonderful in so many ways and I was quite taken with them. There is actually quite a bit of history between the two and so much happens between them. Old memories are stirred up along with old wounds that never really healed. Along with experiencing strong character growth, the two develop a truly beautiful connection. Their chemistry is off the charts! Despite their age gap and different personalities, their connection is so sweet. Their love story touched my heart and I was thrilled for their eventual happy ending.

The writing in this book was mature and engaging. Robin Clairvaux does an excellent job of capturing characters that are essentially trapped in life both by a sense of obligation as well as inner turmoil. She writes with clear passion and a sense of deep empathy that really resonated with me. Her writing is wonderfully descriptive and has lyrical qualities that I feel everyone will enjoy. The pacing in the story was in line with the healing that occurred with our main characters. The romance was a slow burn and it just worked so well. We go to revel in shared quiet moments, sweet and tender conversations over coffee and shared looks that hold so much promise. A beautiful love story, indeed!

I highly recommend this book for all fans of sapphic slow burn romances with an age gap and elements of second chance romance. This was a unique workplace romance that featured real emotional stakes and a character centric love story that I really enjoyed. This book captured my attention and kept me engaged until the end. These characters will remain nestled in your hearts and vivid in your memories for a long time to come. This was a powerful sapphic romance and one that you won’t regret reading!

Content Warnings: Attempted suicide (in the past), death of parents (in the past)

What I enjoyed most about this book was the nonbinary representation. I feel like we don’t get enough of that in our sapphic romances and it’s something I appreciated.

In Moments Like This is a contemporary sapphic romance with an age gap relationship between businesswoman Denise and hotel jack-of-all-trades Maddox. They meet (again) when Denise comes to Maddox’s hotel for a business deal. Her father’s theme park franchise wants to expand and the hotel Maddox works at is on the short list of potential locations.

Maddox is a wonderfully thoughtful and caring person. They go above and beyond at the hotel and are respected and well liked by everyone. They live onsite at the hotel and spend several days a week of their free time visiting their gran who has dementia. They are 26 years old but haven’t really thought about what kind of future they want.

Denise doesn’t enjoy working for her father’s company. She promised him she would work for him for two years if he would help her start a nonprofit business afterwards. Her two years are almost done and securing this location for her father’s business is supposed to be her last big business venture with his company. She is 37 years old but spent much of her earlier years married to a cheating man. She has struggled (and still seems to) with mental health.

I enjoyed this story but did struggle a bit with how wishy-washy Denise could seem at times. She would often doubt Maddox’s motives. Many times I wondered what Maddox saw in her. This book was a 3.5 star read for me but I’m rounding up to 4 stars for the nonbinary representation,

In Moments Like This is a somewhat heavier read, but in a very human way. The surface tropes are fun. Age gap, workplace tension, one night to something deeper, oh and yes there is spice too! But the heart of this book lives in grief, guilt, and the complicated layers we carry from our pasts. It’s a story that asks you to sit with the messiness instead of looking away, and I feel it is one many can relate to when read from this angle.

Maddox’s journey hit me hardest. Juggling work and family responsibilities, the feeling of not being good enough and the way they talk about feeling like “a warped puzzle piece trying to fit into the life” others wanted sat with me. Denise’s arc is different, but equally weighed down by family expectation and the version of herself she’s been holding together for years. Their connection isn’t fluffy or simple. It’s two people trying to breathe in the middle of everything they’ve never dealt with.

The representation in this book is handled with care. Queer, nonbinary, corporate workplace dynamics, complex families, and the exhaustion of trying to fit into someone else’s idea of your life. There are also several trigger warnings worth noting before you start: grief, loss, suicide mentions, dementia, homophobia, and light religious references. None of it feels sensationalised. It’s just… life, in all the painful and tender ways it shows up.

This is a niche story, and I don’t think every reader will relate to every piece of it, but there were moments that truly felt like a mirror for me. It’s messy and emotionally layered. If you’re drawn to sapphic romance that leans into the hard parts of being human and queer, and you don’t mind sitting with heavier themes, this one might stay with you too.

“But that was life, wasn’t it? Sometimes you just needed other people.”

I’ve been a fan of Robin Clairvaux for a few years now and have been eagerly awaiting their second novel. In Moments Like This did not disappoint! There are so many things to love here, from the vivid setting to the crackling tension between the MCs, Maddox and Denise. These two characters are multifaceted, relatable, and likeable, even when they’re clashing and making mistakes with each other. The supporting characters felt real to me too, and Clairvaux realistically depicts how family members, colleagues, and friends can influence people as much as a partner or romantic interest. Although this story is unmistakably a romance, it also feels like a love letter to friendship and community. It makes for a cozy and charming read, especially during the fall season, when the book is set. I’ve never been to the Ozarks of Arkansas, but this book transported me there, and the characters stole my heart along the way.

I enjoyed this book so much, a love story that takes its time to build the characters so by the end I was very much invested in their outcome. Well written, lots of emotion and just the right amount of spice.

Denise is an older executive whose family owns a company that develops amusement parks. She is struggling to find her footing years after a divorce, self doubts and depression.

Maddox is a self described “jack of all trades” who works at the resort that Denise is sent to buy and develop. They are navigating their own emotional development while caring for their beloved grandmother. Maddox will tug on your heartstrings. They are loyal and caring while continuing their path of self discovery. It’s easy to see why Denise is drawn to them.

Toss in a few misunderstandings, a deceitful coworker and a group of friends that hopefully will see their own stories written someday and you have yourself a winner. Just a great read.

With different views and ideas clashing, corporate vs family run, profit vs people, strategic plans vs strategic needs, standard gender identification vs actual gender defines (gay, bi, neutral, et cetera) this story draws you in and sets your emotions on edge. Not every one cares what you call yourself, you are still a person with feelings, identified or confused.
Denise has to come to terms with her past, her corporate upbringing and her future, with her potential new family and the combining of corporate with family/community needs and lifestyles.
This book brings true characters and real feelings to the surface with some pain and education.
I recommend this book as a great read and growing experience for the characters. The author has captured real life and brought it out within this book.

Denise Farrington finds herself having to fill in for her injured father at FunDaze, a yearly event his company holds. He also needs her there as a rep for the company, as they may be buying the resort they're using to host the event.

Maddox works at the resort and they find themselves dreading the sale, as they need their job to care for their Granny. Even stranger when Denise arrives she seems very weirded out by them.

(Denise remembers Maddox from a hotel they were both at, where she ODed. The only good news is Maddox doesn't seem to know her.)

Denise and Maddox clear the air, and Maddox steps up to help Denise run the conference. After a one night stand Denise realizes she's falling for them.

But buying the resort complicates the situation...

3.5 stars. Solidly good but didn't blow me away.

Finally accepting yourself!

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the main characters in this story from a first time author to me. Both Denise, an executive from the Farrington Amusement Park empire and Maddox, the jack of all trades, at the resort which Denise hoped to purchase, were multifaceted characters. I loved the way Robin slowly stripped them, layer by layer, for the reader to get a peek at all they had overcome in the past to get where there were today. It was emotional, loving, fragile and genuine. I really enjoyed Robin's writing style and look forward to many more books in the future!

Thank you for the arc. This book is full of complex layers, complex characters and complex emotions.
Denise is working for her dad but doesn’t enjoy her work. A previous marriage to a cheat has left her feeling vulnerable and unworthy. Her mental health is tackled well on the book and we get to understand her struggles and how she got to where she is.
Maddox on the other hand is a happy go lucky kind of person who cares for their grandmother who has Alzheimer’s and lives on site at the hotel they work at.
The MC’s had depth and back stories that explained who they are and the supporting characters added to the story. A love story that has plenty of thorns as well as the roses.

I really enjoyed this story and the relationship between Denise and Maddox. Both characters have things from the past to overcome. The inclusion of the inner monologue gives additional insight into every decision they ultimately make and I really appreciated knowing that little bit more. It's well written and I found it a very engaging read. The communication between Denise and Maddox was also a positive feature for me.

I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Fair warning I read as an ARC. That said, I loved this book. It captured my imagination right away and held me throughout. The characters are built with deep sensitivity, building their history carefully. The settings are perfect for the story. I have been to those places or similar enough to have the feelings. The family dynamics are very important in the story as in life, not contrived. For me the emotional side is very important, I found my self sobbing at points, laughing out loud or giggling. If a book can give all that, it must be good! Robin Clairvaux has delivered!

I recommend this book. Sweet love story with some anguish due to the characters feeling inadequate. Once they learned to trust and share their doubts they helped each other. Thanks for a winner.

What a world wind!

A romantic tale with main characters that the author has painted with deep emotions and rich histories. A second meeting between Maddox and Denise that could be destiny or chance. Will villains or low self esteem block Maddox’s and Denise’s chance at HEA?
