An overworked salaryman and a mischievous cashier with a dual personality form an unexpected bond in this sweet-and-sour comedy!
Sasaki's rivalry with Kawakami over Tayama stirs up an unexpected realization as well as doubt for the overworked office drone. As he tries to get to know both Tayama and Yamada better, his suspicions grow... Meanwhile, a problem customer unsettles Yamada. Sasaki then reels in shock to hear Yamada is missing. He's forced to face his past and decide whether to step in during the store employees' crisis.
i'm on the fence. like, on one hand, conceptually, a 45 year old man with a crush on a 24 year old cashier is bad. but is that even what this guy has going on ??? i can't be sure. okay, no, he probably does. even with that, though, the power dynamic of their relationship is enjoyably reversed, what with sasaki being pathetic. like, you never feel like it's as creepy as most might assume, because mostly it's yamada's initiation. and yeah, i enjoy a pathetic man. sasaki is like, diabolically pathetic. i feel bad how much i enjoy it. the problem, though, i think, is that yamada is kind of full of shit? there's no woman (i know) who would behave like this. it almost reads like a man's fantasy, but it's surprisingly not as annoying as most things with that problem are. maybe. most of the time. sometimes. i might have rose colored glasses on because the creator shares my admiration for the intimacy and aesthetics of smoking, which is an immediate +5000, i'm afraid? i don’t even necessarily enjoy the romance between the two, i just like the working class vibe of everything. plus, sasaki is old. and that’s comforting, because there isn’t a lot of manga that allows you to feel okay about being old. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand yeah okay yes okay yeah? yes. i like it. but don't ask me to explain it. i don't like feeling like i need to defend myself.
This story does love to move at its own pace and I would argue that there is a tighter version of this that is much closer to excellence. Still, manga does love a storyline that goes for ages, so there’s not much point complaining.
Plus, I think this volume is overall quite good as a rule. I also firmly believe that the central conceit of the story, that Sasaki has been so oblivious to Tayama and Yamada being the same person, is ridiculous. Therefore it was nice to see that mostly hit the fan.
In contorting its narrative into knots over this, it becomes a lot more clear that this isn’t just Sasaki leaning on Yamada for emotional support via a friendly ear. Yamada’s got her own issues and neither of them is very good at asking for assistance.
These are two people who don’t want to bother others with their problems, but they’ve consequently done it so much that they not only wound up withdrawn, but also avoidant to a certain extent.
Thus the two of them want to end the charade, but neither of them is quite able to muster up the strength. I’ve always been a sucker for broken people who find one another and become something better, so this worked reasonably well for me.
It doesn’t hurt that it’s very funny at the start, as last volume’s high drama slowly resolves, but not before a great joke about bounty hunting. It’s one of my favourite gags in the series.
I like the way that Yamada sticks to that deception, even when she’s being incredibly open about everything else. While the pretence may not be believable, the justification totally is. The way she describes her relationship with Sasaki is also very cute, yet also quite guarded, which feels about right for her.
Generally my problems with the story and this volume boil down to the narrative contrivances. It’s one thing to keep this secret rolling, but another when these little drama bombs keep going off. It never quite gels with what the story is best at for me. It reminds me a little of Call of the Night in that respect.
Yet the story makes the point that accepting kindness is okay and we don’t always have to be alone, which isn’t the worst message (I’m okay with stories that have ‘okay’ messaging). That part I like, but it does convey that message rather bluntly at times.
Even the flashbacks make sense here, since these are two people who are held back by past mistakes that they’re only now beginning to move on from. I wouldn’t call them necessary, but they certainly flesh things out.
It’s good. I sometimes think these volumes are a bit long and could do with a chapter less, since they often cover very similar ground repeatedly, but I’ve come to terms with what this series offers and I don’t dislike it.
3.5 stars - rounded up because I generally think it’s very well done, but I still don’t love the aforementioned contrivances and dramatics that it sometimes employs. Still a worthwhile read.
This was a good volume. I liked seeing the main characters become closer and share more of themselves with each other. I really can't wait for the next volume.
Este tomo lo ha tenido todo! Por fin una tónica mas seria y mas verdades ocultas desveladas. Me encanta como va avanzando su relación! Estaremos pendientes cuando llegue por fin la revelacion oficial🫣
I feel like this is one of the best volumes yet! I like how Sasaki is already catching up to Yamada's lie, and I loved getting more backstory for these two.

I love how Sasaki is generally awkward but more sure he is in his love for Tayama, the calmer he gets in their interactions, while Tayama is the right opposite, she loves messing with him but the more she falls for him, the more erratic she gets. I think it nicely shows their age without it being weird or creepy, because Sasaki deep down knows that he's moving from "pick-up pill" appreciation to the dangerous deep feelings waters and aware of the age gap as he is, he gets more serious. Yamada on the other hand was first testing him if he was a creep, then appreciating his class, and finally detesting(?) his reserved politeness creating a sense of agitation in her character we're not used to as readers but is very much in tune of her being only 25 yo in my opinion. There was a slight tonal change to this volume for a bit more serious overall and I think it nicely fits the fact we're comfortable with the characters in their routine and they are comfortable with each other enough to leave the surface territory of nice smoking breaks with jokes and teasing. Will I miss it? Yes. But it makes sense to make way for some character deep dive as far along in the relationship as they are.

This volume continues the slow burn romance, but we've passed the point where there characters have truly connected and realize their feelings. This part of a manga rom-com can become drawn out and frustrating, with both characters just nearly about to confess their feelings but holding back, usually for a joke. This manga avoids this, though not perfectly. Jinushi is still spinning out both Sasaki and Yamada's pasts and how they are growing through them, reflecting on them (sometimes alone, sometimes with one another), and how they live their own lives. This keeps the story interesting instead of just pulling on the heart strings. Yamada saying what she did to "dream Sasaki" was a little contrived, but it's one of the mainstays of manga, so I just chalk it up to being in-genre.
On one hand, this is suspenseful in a way that is tonally inconsistent with the rest of the series and threw me off a little. On the other, it's resolved in a way that teaches us more about the main and side characters alike, ties itself to previous chapters which remain emotionally compelling, and moves the overarching plot forward majorly. So like a strong 3?
Yeah just as delightful as prior volumes, with some surprising punch. As always, can’t wait for more, but this volume was satisfying in and of itself, so the wait won’t be too painful.
Less shenanagins this time but that just meant it ratcheted up the emotional tenor. There were a few moments that really hit me.
This is so charming and wholesome! Sasaki and Yamada/Tayama was so adorable! It made me think about being an adult having a job and finding comfort and peace with an understanding person. This definitely showed an excellent age gap relationship between two adults.
Came here for the romance between two people sharing a smoking spot stayed for the story between strangers helping each other overcome their past and accept the people they were and allow themselves to move forward and accept the love and community around them.
This one is very sweet, but the tropes are heavy here and entirely unnecessary. We already like Sasaki, we don't need this stupid pseudo-drama to try to make him a hero.
