Dave uncovers the conspiracy behind the plague. The lesson? Trust no one.

After months of fighting the endless hordes ravaging Tres Marias, Dave Pulaski and his wife, Holly, catch a break. Black Dragon Security suddenly shows up in full force to rescue them.

The paramilitary organization sets up a safe zone. They provide food and shelter for the bone-weary residents, as well as protection from zombies. But the nightmare is far from over. The virus is mutating, and the infected are getting smarter–and faster. Then, when a savvy reporter starts asking too many questions, she’s murdered.

Dave finally uncovers the truth behind the epidemic–a secret medical experiment. But the revelation will cost him, and the price just might be too much to bear.

Since the beginning, Dave has fought to protect the ones he loves. What if it’s not enough?

What? Another Zombie tale? Ah, but this one IS different! No brain eating, these zombies go for total body consumption, no over-the-top heroes standing alone against the hordes of the undead. What Steven Ramirez has given us is pure drama, real-life characters fighting for survival, winging it as they go along, not knowing what the right path is or who is telling the truth. Pure gut instinct, weighing the odds and hoping they make the right decisions as their small town is decimated by creatures from their worst nightmares and new hope arrives in the form of a paramilitary group with the power to change the tide.

Dave and Holly have faced down the enemy, they have faltered, they are damaged, especially Dave, who now must live with his past, his deeds and his betrayals. How can he make things up to Holly, clearly the free spirit of the two, clearly the one willing to grab on to the best chance to stay alive and fight for her future and that of mankind. What dark secrets are being kept from them? Are they simply a feeding ground for the creation of monsters who love the kill? There is a madman behind this scourge and his scientific tampering is out of control, mutating and becoming even more hellish.

Heroes will die, others will finally learn to live. The battle will rage on. Humanity is on the line.

Steven Ramirez has a created more than another zombie apocalypse, he has created a work with fine detail, high tension and populated it with true-to-life characters. His style is crisp, his plot well-thought out and the journey he takes us on is far too believable not to make one shiver.

REVIEW: DEAD IS ALL YOU GET by Steven Ramirez

I reviewed this novel at the author's request, and found it an amazingly literate and literary work of the Zombie Apocalypse ( a subject I generally avoid, because what is new there?) Well, Mr. Ramirez is what is new: his admirable "failed hero," a man who has killed, been unfaithful, despaired, and yet, redeems himself in the eyes of his wife, is a decent father to his "adopted" daughter, is a fast friend to several, and is a protector whenever he can. He is a philosopher and a soul-searcher; a man who has certainly seen some of the worst Death has on offer, and can still grieve, protect, and philosophize on the existence of the soul in the undead.

Zombies? Check. Drama? Check. Fast-paced thrill ride? Hell, yes!

Steven Ramirez has created a post-apocalyptic landscape full of zombies that has everything The Walking Dead is trying to be. The biggest thing? Realism.

Dave is a great tortured hero who must live with the bad things he's done in his life. While trying to create a new life with his new girl, including an adopted daughter of sorts, Dave beats himself up because he can't be the perfect guy.

But, during a zombie apocalypse happens, you don't perfect, you need kick-ass. And Ramirez gives us this in droves.

So, for this awesome Halloween season, if you are in the mood for zombies, check out this series. You won't regret it.

WHAT?!

Great book! This is by far one of the best, twisted and freaky zombie , not zombie series I have read and I've read quite a few. Such an amazing story line with fully developed characters who are very relatable.
Book one sucks you in and want to continue reading until you're finished with the series. Book 2 make you say WTF a few times! Situations the Black Dragon gang find themselves in is unreal! Like mouth dropping! Then characters you love get offed! Big bummer there! The big shocker? The fact that you're totally gutted! Like sadness! Weird for a zombie book, but believe me it totally works!
I hope that this helps anyone who read book 1 decide that this series is absolutely worth continuing. I know that I'm jumping right into the next book!

** Disclosure: The author provided me a complimentary copy of his book in exchange for a review. No other relationship is to be implied or inferred from reading this review. **

When last we left Dave Pulaski in Tell Me When I'm Dead https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... , he'd helped fight off the Red Militia, reconciled with his life, and was hip-deep in the mystery of what has turned many of the residents of Tres Marias, CA into "draggers" (aka zombies). The story looked like it could have a happy end in sight; no freaking bueno.

The first chapter tells you right away something is different. Dave's narrative reminds you of the guy who hangs out in the diner at 3 am full of rambling nonsense about black UN helicopters. Clearly between the end of Tell Me When I'm Dead and the end of this book, stuff got really, really real. Dave Pulaski has been changed; at one point near the end of the book, he even says, "I'm already dead."

Dave now picks up the story from where we left it. Dave and Holly, along with their new "daughter" Griffin come into Black Dragon's facility with Dave and Holly becoming employed by the security firm in order to have some way of getting to the bottom of what's happened to their town. Warnick is still there to provide guidance and wisdom along with wise acre Springer; the four of them spend a lot of the book in Bob Seger mode of working on a mystery without any clues.

As time goes by, it becomes apparent that this is not a zombie apocolypse, but an outbreak of a disease that breaks containment and the town functions as one large petri dish. The nature of this virus that has gotten out becomes more sinister as each layer is peeled back. Worse yet; it's mutating. Now people can be infected like draggers and not show any overt symptoms.

With things degenerating, Tres Marias brought in additional law enforcement help. However, they are a corrupt force serving a corrupt local government. At one point, I will have to admit to wishing for a deus ex machina of a tactical nuclear warhead to obliterate the town and put everyone out of their misery. Thankfully, Mr. Ramirez did not elect for such a cheap plot device. What happens is far worse; it is the hell of continuing on with life when it is as devastated as the town you used to call home.

The last three chapters is where the action and emotion get turned up to 11 and is not to be missed. Mr. Ramirez has done a great job of bringing this cauldron from slow simmer to rolling boil, much like the frog who is unaware of being boiled to death. You are worked up to think it's all going to be just fine, and then he yanks the rug right out from underneath you. What's left is a bitter Dave Pulaski searching for vengeance instead of answers. Dave Pulaski version 3.0 is now living with no brakes and nothing to lose, making him dangerous, not only to himself, but to those who stand between him and Walt Freeman.

It's fairly obvious we're going to round three with this story and if book 2 is any indication, the intensity is going to get kicked up a couple more levels.

BOTTOM LINE: You need to read book 2 for more excitement. This series is a keeper.

4 solid stars. An enormous improvement over book 1 and really one of the better z-genre books I've encountered.

The writing is tighter even though we're still just in Dave's head (books told solely in first person POV's have never been my favorite, in large part because I want to know more about how all the different players see each other). But the prose and tension is really racheted up significantly. Even the first 3 chapters - most of which was a kind of teasing flashback mode - had me hooked. There are all kinds of ways I could say this book improved, from the foreshadowing to the real emotional moments. But hey, bottom line is that I really enjoyed reading this book!

I think the best thing I liked about 'DIAYG' is that it would be able to hold itself together as a story WITHOUT the zombies. The intrique and suspense really keep you going and just when we think we're getting a break, boom, more scheisse hits the fan. Even though the actual cause of the 'troubles' isn't all that original, the execution is both sharp and fun to follow. Sadly, you'll see that some of the main characters are not moving on (no spoilers), but none of it is just gratuitous. It all fits together really well and naturally lets those that remain change accordingly.

From a sheer adrenaline perspective, the battles are also handled well and I appreciate not every battle being a variation of those before it. More impressively, some of the final 'crescendo moments' - either on the highway or in the 'new location' - will stick with me for a long time. Heck, even the religious bits are toned down to a more acceptable level over some of the thicker proselytizing in book 1 and who could object to visions of an angel appearing (vs. rotting Jim or his dead dog?).

And yes, because Ramirez includes the first three or so chapters of the next book as previews, I can already confirm that I'm excited to continue onwards - this time without ANY doubt - into the final book. The on-going ... mutation? hee hee... of these books looks like we're in for an interesting time!

Dead is all he got

This book picks up right where Tell Me When I’m Dead left us. The action is furious, almost nonstop. We lose some people I hated to see fall by the wayside. And Dave, where does his story go from here? We shall see...

Very incredibly intriguing but I was confused at times.

There would be sections that we were very technical to me. The writing/story was fun and I have had me laughing . looking forward to next book.

Wow. So much going on here. Dave and his family/friends are trying to save the civilians and stop the experimenting on people. Very fast paced. Likeable characters. Can't wait for book 3.

As good as the first book. Some logical questionmarks about how the characters react but overall a good zombie-story.

Tired of zombie stories? Try this . . .

Good, action filled tale, with a hero who is his own worst enemy. I’m hooked on the series, and you will be too.

Dave and the gang are back and they are pulling out all the stops. Dead Is All You Get is the second installment in The Dead Series and in my opinion the storytelling keeps getting better and better. This tale did open on what I thought of as a bit of an odd note with Dave in a café and if you find yourself a bit lost don't stop reading because I promise all will be revealed. The world building continues to be well executed with the characters vivid and believable in their portrayals. Dead Is All You Get offers up a hair-raising tale with tons of action, continued struggles for survival, eye-popping conspiracies, and let's never forget the appearance of the new king nutbunny who emerges and is so delightfully dastardly - not to mention just plain evil. I do admit to still having moments of wanting to smack Dave and tell him to man up or stop being such a hothead, but even with his own insecurities and faults he gets in there and does what needs to be done without completely losing his humanity. I will admit to missing a bit of the prior head-lopping, as Dave has switched up to a gun and this installment goes more for the head shots, but never fear the trusty ax is only a hidey-hole away. Interpersonal relationships are explored further and there are reconnections with old friends. I found myself giggling at times and shedding not just a few heartbroken tears and overall this was a great read for me. Even though there are significant resolutions and unveiling of conspiracies by the end of the book, there does remain an opening for future tales in this series and I am definitely curious where the next adventure might lead. I would recommend this book to fans of the genre and would suggest reading book one, Tell Me When I'm Dead, to get the benefit of the prior world build; although it is not a disaster if this is where you start, frankly I enjoyed this book even more and feel it is definitely worth the read. I received this book from the author with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book.

Dead Is All You Get by Steven Ramirez is a shoot first then shoot again horror thriller of the highest order. A brilliant mix of clipped, tough narrative so in vogue in Hollywood circa 1940s film noir with gung-ho action sequences that makes The Walking Dead tame by comparison. And the dialog is so spot on. Everything about this zombie novel screams READ ME!!! And I can guarantee not one reader will be disappointed.
This is book 2 and kicks off exactly where book 1 left off - our anti-hero Dave Pulaski, former drunk and philanderer, is now more like a hero having kicked the booze, made up with his wife Holly and has a surrogate daughter Griffin. But first things first get to safety. Leave the town behind with its Red Militia and Draggers - that's zombies by the way, and head for the hills of North California.
The group of survivors are rescued by Black Dragon a paramilitary unit mopping up and trying to figure what the hell is going on.
Dave needs to know WHY? After blood screening the Black Dragon and Dave's crew team up and go in search of the truth.
But the truth is bigger than anything they can handle, it's bigger than the President of The United States. It's freakin' BIG! Problem for Dave is this truth will get him killed and all he loves. Can he put it behind him and take care of his family? Read and bleed.
FIVE STARS for this awesome zombie horror thriller and oh so very highly recommended.

I read the first book in this series, "Tell Me When I'm Dead" and was enthralled with the author's storytelling ability and writing style. Virtually flawless, and the fact that I'm no fan of zombie books but couldn't put it down was a clear indicator that this is a special book and series. Book two was as good as book one. The author is a great writer, and though I recognized that in the first book, it became even more evident in the second. His dialogue and pacing is purely professional, engaging and sharp. Tight writing and not a wasted word in propelling the story forward.

In "Dead Is All You Get," the aftermath of the initial carnage in book one turns into a coming together of a smart, tough and dedicated group who is trying to navigate ever-changing dark political forces and the deadly-but-still-mutating non-dead, as they try to determine the reason for the experiment that decimated their lives, and who is behind it. More, they want to eradicate the forces that have brought this plague upon their home town, and they find themselves in perilous situations time and again. These are realistic heroes whose dangerous escapades leave your breathless and keep you turning the pages.

I am looking forward to reading book three, because the author has me fully invested in the characters, their causes, their actions, their futures-- and he has led me there as beautifully as any author possibly could! Beautiful writing, flawless editing, compelling story.

Dead Is All you get is the second book in this exciting Zombie series. I was given an ARC copy by the author for an honest review. I gladly accepted as I enjoyed the first book so very much.
When I began Dead Is All You Get I was immediately back to the invasion and battle with the Undead. David the main character is still fighting along side his wife Holly and honorary daughter Griffen. In this book the Black Dragon force has succeeded in making a safe area and a blood test has been developed to pinpoint those who have the virus that has caused the Zombie outbreak.
David and those he has fought with are now working with the Black Dragon force but David has a hidden agenda to find out how the outbreak started.
The story flows so easily that you are immersed and traveling with the group within the first few pages of the book. The characters are very believable and there is constant action. A must read for all Zombie Apocalypse fans.

** I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.**

To start off, I don't usually read zombie type books, but I read Book One of The Dead Series and truly liked it, so I figured I would read Book Two. I truly enjoyed the way Steven Ramirez wrote this story. The storyline picked up from where the first book left off, but also gave the back story, which I needed due to the time span since reading Book One. The action throughout was impressively written. The way the story unfolded was awesome. The characters were truly a great cast of personalities that were portrayed in a sense that made them feel real to me. This book is not your typical brain eating zombie story, which I don't have the patience to read anyways. This is a great add to your tbr list. Definitely recommended.

When you're fighting against the government, Black Dragon, and hordes of Draggers on a daily basis while living in a military state, how do you have a mundane life. That's what Holly, Dave, and Griffin are doing in the book Dead is All You Get by Steven Ramirez. I really loved this book it is a really not to out there account of what life might be like during a zombie apocalypse. It's gritty, raw, scary, with moments that touch your heart. I love how Dave, Holly, and their adopted daughter Griffin (who is one of my favorite characters) stay together no matter what odds are stacked against them. This was a fabulous read. Highly recommended.

I am usually one who does well with books that start out slow. Almost thought it was going to be a documentary. HELLO Out of the blue the book starts picking up and I can't put it down. The author brings you in to the story and with the plots and twists it makes for one heck of a read. I really enjoyed this book and would love to read the others. Gov't conspiracy, Zombies that are evolving, it goes on and on. I was really impressed with the plot and story and how everything ties in so well and takes you along for the ride. Awesome Job. A must read.
