Between 1/3 and 1/2 of individuals are considered introverted, a nebulous and often misunderstood label that can summon images of silent, antisocial misfits. In reality, the introverted temperament has a great deal of value in society- and can have particular value in the field of student affairs, where it can often be ignored as a viable way of being. Featuring the stories of nearly twenty higher education professionals and considerable research on introversion, THE I'S HAVE IT strives to demystify several elements of introversion, call attention to how it is masked in our daily dealings with one another, and how to best manage it in a variety of roles that one may encounter in the field of student affairs. This book is perfect for those who are navigating the field as introverts, those who understand themselves but want a way to explain their style to others, and even the extrovert seeking understanding on how to work with an introverted employee, coworker, or student.
Filled with stories from the author and colleagues in the field, this book focuses on a several professional "stages" that I's may find themselves in - conferences, graduate programs, the job search and employer/employee relationships are just a few. Quirky, charming and genuine, this book made my introvert feel right at home.
This is a terrific follow-up to Susan Cain's book on introversion and as an introverted (but skilled at faking extroversion) student affairs practitioner, an invaluable resource for my own professional growth and development. Amma's carefully researched book is filled with anecdotes and examples to which I could wholeheartedly relate. Overall, it's an excellent, thoughtful book and I can't wait for her next publication!
I appreciated this in-depth look at the world of student affairs through the eyes of an introvert and how both introverts and extroverts can better manage the delicate balance of personality differences between them. As an introvert myself, I found there to be a lot of truths in this book, and I think it's a great read for any student affairs professional - introvert or extrovert.
