Gelatin shots are back! Jena Derman and Jack Schramm of Solid Wiggles in Brooklyn, New York, have reimagined the nostalgic Jell-O shot. The title doesn’t refer to the Australian children’s music group but to the solid gelatin cubes known variously as Jigglers, Jell-O shots or cocktail jellies, depending on whether there’s alcohol present. The cookbook authors, Jena Derman and Jack Schramm, met while working at the eclectic Momofuku Milk Bar and in 2020 formed a company, the eponymous Solid Wiggles, to sell these Jigglers that are like nothing you’ve seen: pretty and encasing lovely 3-D patterns.
For most readers, Solid Wiggles will be coffee-table book. You’re not going to replicate Annie Leibovitz’s photos, Edward Hopper’s paintings or Henry Moore’s sculptures, are you? But aren’t they beautiful to peruse? The same goes with Solid Wiggles; making these requires syringes, X-Acto knives, silver gelatin (whatever that is) and blowtorches. (I couldn’t make this up!) But the results are precious gems sporting tiny cherries, plaids, flowers, squiggles and even glitter. Some are homages to Jackson Pollack, while others channel Robert Rauschenberg or Wassily Kandinsky. Skip the directions and just enjoy the art, as I did!
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press in exchange for an honest review.
As someone who loves Jello-O and grew up with them as the "special" dessert or salad molds at holiday dinners, I had to read this book. It is beautifully photographed and the instructions are very straightforward. The authors are very creative and created a delicious recipes that I definitely want to make for the next girls' weekend trip.
As another reviewer stated, unless you have a well stocked bar, some of these recipes will be cost prohibitive to try just for fun. Same for a few of the tools that are used. I appreciate the third section with the detailed instructions on how to make the more elaborate designs. At first I thought that might be helpful before the second section, but then again, it might intimidate people from trying to make those recipes.
Definitely recommend for individuals who consider themselves skilled bartenders and/or experimental bakers. Lots of great ideas to play with here.
I love a kitchen project, bonus points if it requires art supplies and syringes.
This book delivers on technique, detailed ingredient lists and pictures, and entertaining copy.
It is thorough and thoughtfully arranged. I appreciate the scaling of recipes for different pan sizes, highly specific guidance, and acknowledgment that some of these recipes are involved and expensive and need to be executed perfectly. It’s a very self-aware cookbook.
I have enthusiastically pre-ordered the hard copy of this book.
Thank you Net Galley for an advanced copy of this book.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Ten Speed Press for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The photography in this recipe book is beautiful, and I wish there were more of it!
Having seen the duo's creations on social media over the past year, I was super excited to hear they were coming out with their own book. I got addicted to making my own craft jello shots over the winter holidays, and I was hoping to find new combos that would help me further secure my spot as "Party Fairy". This book did not disappoint. I definitely have some new cocktail ideas, and more importantly, the proper ratios to once again get my family and friends delightfully tipsy. Now...I don't know if I will ever be making the more involved two-plus-day jellies, but I do like that they are included. I would have loved a little section that had presentation ideas and food pairings.
